The Roanoke Skier & Adventurer The Monthly Newsletter for the Roanoke Ski & Adventure Club Newsletter May, 2020 1 President’s Message Usually April showers bring May flowers This April has done that and more! This year is different in that many of the beautiful spring botanical gardens that we love to view, smell and relax in…. are closed! From Central Park, New York to the Keukenhof Gardens, Netherlands, the Covid-19 express has done them all in. However, rather than overload you with repeating the many procedures recommended to ensure the non-spreading of this deadly virus, I thought it more meaningful to reflect on the changes that we are witnessing as it’s result. Most recently I have personally conducted a virtual Board meeting utilizing “Zoom”. Now you must know that it wasn’t easy, but I got through it and even helped out a few having trouble logging on. Believe me when I say I’m no expert. I was than able to follow-up with a “HangOut” virtual happy hour with several RSAC members. Not the same as in real life, but fun. My point being that even during difficult times like these, new skills can be taught and learned. Additionally, I, and probably you as well, have experienced numerous encounters which have elevated hope for the human condition. The creative ways that people are using the digital arena to bring smiles to our copious number of shut-ins. The togetherness experienced thru the many phone calls from relatives, neighbors and acquaintances. Yes, we seem to becoming more sensitive to the spirit of these folks. Trust in a supreme presence that can bring us back from the brink… seems alive. I believe it was Benjamin Franklin who said: "We must all hang together or most assuredly we will hang alone.” If there is strength in numbers than 330 million should be good for something. May flowers

This April has done that and more! IKON PASS UPDATE Our tour agencies have been diligently working on our 2021 ski trips. However, these are most challenging times for the travel industry as we all know. Completed, signed contracts for next year's destinations are incredibly complicated. The ski industry is very committed to having a successful season next year and we hope to have destinations mapped out as soon as possible. Please note, we will not be offering trips without very lenient cancellation policies. We are all aware of the uncertainty moving forward, but we also know if the 2021 ski season is up and running as the industry is planning, we need to be proactive in securing lodging and air seats.

Rest assured, the contracts we are working on with the resorts and airlines, will have very lenient refund polices, if not totally refundable. Also, though the exact destinations are not yet confirmed, we will have trips to only Western IKON Destinations. If you plan to take two trips with the club and or ski at Snowshoe, buying the IKON Pass for the 20-21 season will be a big money saver! Additionally, if you buy through the club, you will receive a $50 credit towards a RSAC ski trip.

Please note the deadline for the Ikon Pass has been pushed back and the price for renewal has been reduced! Also, the IKON Pass now has ADVENTURE ASSURANCE and you can defer your 20/21 pass to the 21/22 season for any reason. There is no charge for Assurance.

We are now able to offer IKON purchases on-line. Please visit the link below to purchase on-line. Make sure you record you are with the RSAC.

https://www.winterskiandsport.com/shop

You need to scroll down the page to the IKON Base Pass (it shows $199 because you can make payments). Renewal for the Base Pass is now only $599!!!

If you want to upgrade to the Jackson Hole/Snowmass ticket, you also need to click that box to add to cart.

If you want extra ski days with no blackout dates, purchase the IKON Full Pass (it shows $199 because you can make payments).

Your IKON Pass needs to be ordered by May 27th to receive the great price of $599 Base Pass renewal or $799 Full Pass renewal. If you are a first time buyer, you still get the $50 credit towards a RSAC Ski Trip.

We expect the pass will increase by at least $100 after this deadline.

Just as soon as we have contracts for 2021 we will pass along the destinations. We are all anxious about plans for next year, but the flexibility to defer your IKON purchase to the following year, 2022 season, with no penalty is huge piece of mind.

Please do not hesitate to email or call Marla Kemsey, if you have questions. These are complicated times.

TRIPS

UPDATE ON TRIPS

As we continue self-distancing and with the continuing threat of COVID 19 our remaining trips may be in an uncertain state. While the balance of trips for 2020 are still planned, we don’t know what will happen with the virus over the next several months. And it makes planning for 2021 trips problematic. As reported in the last newsletter all of the ski trips were successfully completed with the exception of Big Sky which turned into a one-day ski adventure. Fortunately, we have been able to secure refunds for part of the Big Sky trip that eased some of the pain. With respect to the 4 remaining Adventure trips, the two Portugal trips have been rescheduled for end of October through early November timeframes. We expect the New Zealand/Australia trip to go as planned in November. As the Swiss train trip will begin earlier than these trips (September) we are working with our agent to position ourselves so we are not penalized if we are unable to go as planned. We are continuously monitoring the situation with our agents. As we look toward 2021 trips we are moving ahead cautiously and what we offer for next year will be impacted greatly on how this year turns out. What we know is that any trips offered will have built in protections that will include full refunds or the option to rebook at a future date. Many resorts and airlines are offering “no risk” terms and conditions that are favorable to the traveler. So stay tuned. We will keep you informed of developments as they occur. Bill Fleshman Trip Director
