SCAM ALERT By Shirley Clay, Resident Counselor

How to report an attempted scam – Residents often come to me with a telephone number in hand, knowing the number relates to a scam call. Many are exasperated because the call is occurring several times a day, or at odd hours throughout the evening.

My first direction is to inform the resident not to pick up the phone when the scam number appears on the caller id or if it’s a number they don’t recognize. Scammers usually get tired and move on to

Page 5: The Roadrunner - Blue Skies of Texas · In support of the costume contest, we’ll be holding a few bake sales and chance drawings on the following Friday’s: Oct 11, Oct 18, and

5 Deadline: Wednesday, Oct 23 @ Noon [email protected]

make another call when they don’t get a person to answer, since obviously, there is no one to scam.

Some cell phones have mechanisms to block specific numbers, or apps that can be downloaded for that purpose. (Check with your cell phone carrier or your phone’s app store)

The Federal Trade Commission has an online website to report scam attempts. The complaint information is compiled and forwarded to law enforcement agencies for assistance in pursuing scammers. The information is also compiled to advise the public on circulating scams. The website is: https://www.ftc.gov/ then click on “File a Consumer Complaint.” On the next screen, on the left side of the screen, select “Robocalls, Unwanted Telemarketing, Text, or SPAM” to enter a complaint.

If you don’t use a computer and want to file a scam complaint, you can call 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).

THE NIX CLINIC By Wendy Carpenter, Chief Health Services Officer

The Nix Clinic has officially notified Blue Skies of Texas of their intent to terminate their contract and operations effective Friday, Oct 25. As many are aware, The Nix Hospital was placed on the market, for sale, earlier this year. Blue Skies has been active in pursuing alternative primary care providers for onsite clinic services to replace The Nix Clinic since the announcement of the sale. If you are affected by the clinic closure, please contact your BST Wellness team to discuss options available; ensuring you have a plan to avoid interruption in your health care. Several providers are available to take over primary care with clinic operations currently in place at Blue Skies East and West. Recruiting physicians to provide clinic services onsite is not an easy task. For the potential provider, it must be in alignment with their business plan. For some, it must be approved by their managing partners and/or business office leadership. Please be assured, BST continues to engage with a variety of possible providers, to include hospital systems and specialists, in our attempts to secure valuable onsite services for your convenience.

MAINTENANCE

STAFF

CATERED LIVING By Mercedes Cruz, Catered Living Manager

Tips For Cleaning Golf Cart Windshields - Looking to clean

your windshield on your golf cart? Excellent! Remember though, since golf cart windshields are predominately made of acrylic, you cannot use regular Windex to clean these windshields. If you decide to use Windex or another ammonia based window cleaner, then it will likely

damage your golf cart windshield. Acrylic glass windshields can easily be scratched from the use of harsh cleaners and scrubbers. Once damage has been done to a golf cart windshield, it is hard to undo the scratches and cloudy haze left from damaging cleaners and scrubbers. If you have any other additional golf cart maintenance or cleaning questions, contact us at 210-568-3285. The Catered Living office is located within the Maintenance office (Lower Level, Tower3). We would love to hear from you!

BOB’S BLOG By B b

Bob just returned from another mini vacation. We went to Williams, Arizona to take the double steam engine from Williams to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately, Bob had to stay in the “pokey” while we took the train ride. This year Bob was excited because his “sister” came along for the trip. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for Bob’s 10th Annual Birthday Bash on Friday, Oct 4, starting at 10am in the Main Lobby. Stop by and help Bob celebrate his 10th birthday with a complementary piece of birthday cake!!

CELEBRATION OF 229 YEARS OF HONORED SERVICE

By Jeanne McNamara, Flotilla Commander/BSTW Resident

Each year on Aug 4, the U.S. Coast Guard celebrates its birthday. This year she was 229 years young! At Blue Skies, Flotilla 7-4, USCG Auxiliary carries on their many missions and traditions by holding an annual Coast Guard (CG) Birthday picnic. Members of the flotilla and their families met on Aug 3, at the Gazebo located on the property of BSTW for fun and fellowship. In addition, local “Coasties” from our Blue Skies Community, Mrs. Kathy Bader (wife of CAPT Ernie Bader, USCG

Academy, ’57 [deceased]) and CAPT Pasquale ‘Pat’ Benigno were able to be with us along with special guest, Rear Admiral James Rendon and his wife, Felicitas (Feli). Flotilla 7-4 would now like to welcome VADM Kent Williams and his wife Geraldine – new residents of Blue Skies to our local CG family.

scrappy Blue Gills. Come take advantage of one of Blue Skies most enjoyable attractions. The BSTW Fishing Club will be happy to provide fishing tackle, instructions and a guide to anyone new to fishing. The club will also assist anyone with special needs or physical limitations. We are also available to assist residents of The Vista or Liberty House. Our Club house is co-located with the Model Hobby Shop, and we are always looking for new club members. A fishing license is not required. “Catch and release” is recommended, using barbless hooks. Species size limits are posted at the lakes. Or just come out, and watch us feed the fish. You can volunteer to help feed if you are looking for a fun activity! Note, upcoming event! Fishing is a great activity for your grandkids, and we are planning a special fishing tournament with prizes for them in November (anyone fishing under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult). Stay tuned for more details. For more information or to help feed the fish, contact Layne Perelli or Russ McCarthy (see Resident Roster). Tight lines!

VOTING IN TEXAS MADE EASY By Ellen Alkire

There are three ways to vote in Texas - early voting, vote by mail and voting on Election Day. There are two ways to vote early in Texas - in person at one of the many early voting sites in and around Bexar County, or by mail. Either option will eliminate waiting in line on Election Day. In Person: Early voting usually runs two weeks before Election Day. Registered voters may vote early at any convenient polling location within Bexar County. You do not need to state a reason to vote early. The nearest early voting site to the Village is Johnston Library, 6307 Sun Valley Drive. By Mail: Voting by mail is available to elderly voters and voters with physical disabilities. Applications for a ballot by mail must be submitted to: Bexar County Elections Department, 1103 S. Frio #100, San Antonio, TX 78207 no earlier than two months before Election Day and no later than 11 days before. Call 210-335-0362 to obtain an application. Voting on Election Day at the Village takes place in CC1&2 from 7am to 7pm. Be sure to bring your photo ID.

DRAC ELECTIONS IN SEPTEMBER By Bill Ball, DRAC Secretary

Starting in 2020, the Dining Room Advisory Council (DRAC) will have eighteen representatives - two from each of the nine major population areas (no at-large positions anymore). DRAC members stand for election every year, so all positions are open, but some residents have served so long they are not eligible in 2020. The following DRAC representatives have reached their term limits, and we thank them for their many years of service:

Tom Reedy Kathy Bader Buzz Trustin Joan Leydon Mike Slominski Bill Wilkins Gina Skucas Marilyn Goff Ritchie Seymour

We need residents to bring their energy and ideas on Dining Services to DRAC to continue the progress we have made this year; so we are asking for volunteers to become candidates for representing the residents in their area. This month we will begin putting out flyers to publicize the need for new residents to join DRAC, with elections to take place in September/October. Please submit a Notice of Intent To Stand For Election. These forms will be available at the front desk starting in September. Residents for each area must submit their forms to the front desk collection box by Oct 1, to become a candidate.

“NIGHT TURNED INTO DAY EVENT” By Bill Overacker

Sunday, Sep1, marked the 160th anniversary of the Carrington Event when the Earth was enveloped by an aurora borealis illuminating the night skies. This was the strongest geomagnetic storm known to have hit Earth since the 14th century. Richard Carrington, a British astronomer, viewed a huge sun spot complex from which a gigantic solar flare erupted interacting with the Earth’s magnetosphere and havoc ensued! Telegraph wire experienced increased voltage

delivering shocks to its operators and igniting fires. The energy of this event is estimated at 10 billion atomic bombs! Since 1859, 19 minor geometric storms have been recorded. A solar event of this magnitude today would cause widespread electrical disruptions, black-outs and severe damage to the electric grid. Fortunately, our Space Weather Satellites monitor geometric storms and provide alerts to minimize damage. Sun spots have a marked effect on radio communication as it affects radio propagation conditions significantly. This is another interesting aspect of being an amateur radio operator. All are invited to the next BST Amateur Radio Club meeting on Thursday, Oct 17, at 11:30am in Room CC1. Please contact Joel Lichtenstein for more information. 73—(Best regards in Ham language).

GARDEN CLUB NEWS By Jim Conner

The Blue Skies West Garden Club has been busy this summer; first Gary Alkire volunteered to arrange for a much needed concrete pad to be poured under our pergola. He jumped on the task and had it completed before we had turned around. It looks great and will keep that area much neater. Next, Charlie Michel offered to set up a delivery of crushed limestone rock to be banked along the edges of the new pad to provide easy access and control weeds. He set up a delivery and sent out a call for fellow gardeners to help shovel the rock into place. Cheerful volunteers were there on Sep 19 when the rock arrived and within an hour they had moved the pile into place and raked it smooth.

On Friday, Oct 25, at 10 am, David Rodriguez, Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Service, will give a presentation in the BSTW Roadrunner Lounge to continue his very popular presentation of last year on gardening and container plants. This presentation is open to anyone interested.

There are still some garden plots available for any Blue Skies residents wishing to try their hand at working the soil; contact Jim Conner for details (see Resident Roster).

NATIONAL MAH JONGG LEAGUE By Gayl Ganskow

Unraveling the mystery of the tiles comes with patience and practice. We use the National Mah Jongg League method of play which is also known as the American version. After learning to interpret the Card of Hands, the game develops. What in the world is the Charleston? Bams, Craks and Dots are the main building tiles, but we also have Winds, Flowers, Dragons, and Jokers that play major roles. Come and enjoy! We play three times a week, no sign up, just show up. Playing Sessions: Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm in CC3, All B&A days - 2nd Wednesday of each month, Card Room 112 (Card Room is located across from the Thrift Shop, first floor) Fridays in CC3 from 1-3:30pm, and Saturdays in CC2 from 1-3:30pm.

BOCCE By David Capito

The Bocce court has been refurbished, and is now ready for the fun to start. If you are already a player and need a competitor, or are new to the game and need

instructions, give me a call (see Resident Roster). I have a roster of names that I can send you, or I will play with or show you the simple rules of the game. If you would like to be on the roster, give me a call. The bocce balls, rules of the game and scoreboard are in the building which is supposed to be open from 6am-10pm (court is lighted). If the room is locked, call the front desk for assistance. When the weather cools to a comfortable temperature, we will try to set up a playing schedule. Bocce is a very simple game played in many countries, especially Europe, so try it and you will be amazed at the fun and relaxation it provides. It definitely lowers my blood pressure!!!

WRIGHT PAT MAH JONGG By Martha Wesson

This has been another interesting month for the Wright Pat group in CC3 on Tuesday afternoons. Carolyn and Mary both won with Heavenly Gates, which is not an easy hand, but they were outdone by Frieda who came up with Dragon Snooze, an extremely specific combination of tiles. This is the first time any of us has won with Dragon Snooze in the last five years! On different days, two players had “almost” Hands from Heaven. A true Hand from Heaven requires a win on the very first tile discarded - which seldom happens. Frieda won on the second discard and Katherine on the third, which was cause for great excitement (we are all easily amused and have a great time together). Annie won Hand of the Day, #44, one day, and then Frieda won with #58 on another. Everyone is welcome to play, so stop by and see what it’s all about! See you at 1pm!

BST WEST BILLIARD ASSOCIATION NEWS By Mike Slominski

9-Ball, Tuesday, Sep 3: No scores 8-Ball, Saturday, Sep 7: Big day, six players. T-Man and Fingers won their first two games sending Ding Dong, Big John, Wild Bill and Big Dog to the lower level, and facing each other in game seven with Fingers going into the final. Meanwhile in the lower level, Big John defeated Wild Bill, Ding Dong forfeited his game to Big Dog and Big John moved into game nine by defeating Big Dog. T-Man resurfaced to face Big John in game nine and eventually faced Fingers again. Although T-Man won the first game, Fingers fought on and won the finals. Way to hang in there Fingers.

9-Ball, Tuesday, Sep 10: Barely four showed up. Ding Dong went on a rampage winning three games straight - to be today’s big winner. Ski, Wild Bill and T-Man were only sad spectators to the juggernaut. Well done, Dig Dong.

8-Ball, Saturday, Set 14: No scores again

9-Ball, Tuesday, Sep 17: Same four keep showing up. T-Man and Big John took out Wild Bill and Dig Dong in the first two games. That set them up in game three with T-Man coming out on top. Wild Bill and Dig Dong faced off in game four with Ding Dong advancing to game five against Big John. Big John survived Ding Dong, but couldn’t do the same to T-Man, who won the first game of the final to be Tuesday’s big winner. Well done, T-Man.
