"Is there anyone sick among you? He should ask for the presbyters of the church. They, in turn, are to pray over him anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord." (James11-35:J.4-J.5) Parish- ioners who are seriously ill or antici- pating hospitalization for a serious illness are re- quested to call the parish office if they wish to receive the sacrament. Some hospitals provide full time priests/chaplains. Patients are regularly visited and offered the sacrament of the anoint- ing of the sick, as well as daily Communion. This, however, presumes inpatient admission. Those patients who are interested in receiving this sacrament, but are scheduled for outpatient or same day surgery, should call the parish of- fice to ensure anointing before going to the hos- pital. I neglected to ask for your prayers last weekend as I am attending a re- treat this week. I am taking time to catch up with journaling, praying, and reading. I have a few encyclicals by Pope Francis and the book Triumph Through Failure; A Theology of the Cross. It feels as of lately, I am learning how to fail a lot, but I don’t seem to see much triumph in the mix. I do imagine that my idea of tri- umph is not necessarily the same as God’s vision of triumph. Jesus had to die a horrible death before experi- encing his great triumph. I pray that the author will guide me to new wis- dom and understanding. Even though I failed to ask, I do feel the presence of your prayers and love on the retreat. I pray that you all have a wonderful and safe Mardi Gras. For those who are traveling, our prayers go with you. May this Ash Wednesday grace us with the beginning of a blessed lent. Love, Fr.

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

REFLECTIONS ON TODAY’S READINGS

What an appropriate Gospel as we head into Lent!

Jesus gives a lesson on mercy and love, anchor-

ing it in the words we hear in the first reading.

“Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against

any of your people,” God told Moses (Leviticus

19:18). Jesus extends this instruction from “your

people” to anyone. Don’t retaliate. It just starts a

cycle of animosity and violence. Choose mercy.

Give mercy to the one who hurts you, or steals

from you, or takes advantage of you. Then recon-

ciliation is possible. God also told Moses to “love

your neighbor as yourself,” though the word

“neighbor” was understood to mean “fellow citi-

zen” (19:18). For Jesus, “neighbor” meant any-

one, even enemies. If God’s warm sun shines and

cool rain fall on good and bad alike, what gives us

the right to discriminate? Jesus calls us to show

mercy and love to all, even to those who we don’t

like. Especially to those we don’t like. It is easy to

show love and mercy to those who are kind; the

challenge is to give it to those who are mean. As

we prepare for the penitential season of Lent, let

us pray for more generous hearts, allowing us to

shower our love and mercy upon even our adver-

saries. With whom do you need to reconcile?

How can you keep from retaliating in the future?

Ash Wednesday; a day of fasting. “It’s the thought that counts,” we say to someone who has remembered an occasion with some-thing heartfelt and considerate rather than showy and expensive. Truly, a gift from the heart is worth more than one from a pricey boutique. Joel, Paul and Matthew would agree. In Joel’s time, Israel’s harvests were decimated by locusts and drought. Starving and dying, many believed God had stopped caring for them. Joel’s impassioned words encouraged them to turn back to God, be-ginning with an internal change in attitude: “Return to the Lord with your whole heart” (Joel 2:12). In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disci-ples that the righteous deeds they are called to do –fasting, praying and giving alms—should be done in secret, not ostentatiously. Actions done with humility and sincerity, not in an effort to im-press others, are truly worthy of praise. As we begin this holy season of Lent, we set aside those things that have led us away from the Lord, so we may return to him with humble and contrite hearts. This Lent, what do we give a God who has everything? It is simple. We give our hearts, recommitted to the Lord, motivated to carry out Jesus’ mission to bring justice and mer-cy to the world without drawing attention to our-selves. In this way, Saint Paul would say, we be-come “ambassadors for Christ” *2Cor.5:20) How can you become an ambassador of Christ?
