• 1763 George Grenville – Prime Minister of Britain– Goal – Lower Britain’s debt– Take action against smuggling in the colonies
• (When the colonists smuggle goods to avoid taxes, Britain loses money)
• 1767 Parliament authorized the writs of assistance – Legal documents that allowed custom officers to enter any
location and search for smuggled goods.
