Book is bleak, therefore outlook on the beach is also bleak

The father also knows that there is no hope, so why celebrate

The boy has never experienced that type of enjoyment before.

A force of nature such as a hurricane, or perhaps the shockwave from a volcanic eruption.

Gun signifies their lifeline.

Double Meaning– To the boy could be the actual darkness– To the man could be the Bloodcults
