Sponsorship Helps Children with DyslexiaNine local area children are now reading better and keep-ing up with schoolmates, thanks to a substantial spon-sorship from the Bob Braun Sponsor a Child Fund.

The kids are affected by dyslexia, a common, but manageable, neurological condition that makes reading difficult.

The scholarship enables them to attend the special dyslexia-tutoring program at the Carl and Edyth Lind-ner 32° Masonic Leaning Centers for Children in Cincinnati and Norwood.

One-to-one instruction by certified instructors and volunteer tutors helps students over-come the challenges of dyslexia through the year-long program offered by the Masonic Children’s Learning Center. While the Masonic program is provided free of charge to the students, the actual cost of instruction exceeds $5,000 per pupil.

This sponsorship allows nine students to receive instruction that will assist them in performing to their full potential. The funding was generated by the Teddy Bear 5K Walk/Run. Last year’s event was held in September. In 2009, 195 participants regis-tered for the Walk/Run with proceeds going to the Bob Braun Sponsor a Child Fund. Rob Braun, Local 12 News anchor and son of the late Cincinnati entertainer and show host Bob Braun, accepted the $45,000 on behalf of the fund from Arun Lai, co-chair-man of the Board of Governors of the Learning Centers. The nine student-scholarship winners were on hand for the presentation of the check.

“This is a special privilege to accept this contribution to the Bob Braun Sponsor a Child Fund,” Braun says. “My father’s lifelong support of children’s causes is some-thing my family is extremely proud of. The ability to use these funds to help nine stu-dents overcome the challenges of dyslexia is a lasting legacy. Reading well will open a world of opportunity to these kids.”

Rob Braun, Local 12 WKRC-TV news anchor, accepts a check from Arun Lai, co-chair of the 32° Masonic Leaning Centers for Children. The nine student scholarship winners were present as the check was awarded.

Anyone who has children in college is directly confronted with the cost of education. The Valley of Cincinnati is pleased to lessen that burden by offering scholarships to deserving young people who will begin college in the 2010 aca- demic year. Three different types of scholarships are offered with similar, but not exactly the same, requirements.

An applicant for a Valley scholar-ship must be either the child or grand-child of a member of the Valley of Cincinnati or an active member of the Order of DeMolay, the Order of Job’s Daughters, or the Order of Rainbow for Girls. Additional requirements for the scholarships are listed to the right.

The Supreme Council of the An-cient Accepted Scottish Rite for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction spon-sors scholarships throughout its Val-leys. The Abbott Scholarships began with a portion of the legacy of the late Leon M. Abbott, 33°, Sovereign Grand Commander from 1921-1932. The ap-plication and process are the same as the Valley’s scholarships. Applicants are considered for either an Abbott or a Valley scholarship, the details of which are described below in the block entitled Scottish Rite Scholarships.

The Kathleen Castle Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to pro-vide scholarships for daughters and granddaughters of Eastern Star mem-bers, either living or in good standing

at the time of the death. Additional re-quirements for the scholarships are listed to the right. Applications must be in the hands of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Cincinnati, no later than April 1, 2010.

To obtain an application for either scholarship, simply have the student log on to the Valley Website at www.32 masons.com and then click on the Scot-tish Rite Charities link found on the left side of the screen. If Internet access is not available, you may call the Scottish Rite office at 513-421-3579 or 800-561-3579 to receive a copy of the application by mail.

The Valley of Cincinnati Founda-tion, in addition to providing funding for the scholarship program also awards grants in support of the charitable aims of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, including the Carl & Edyth Lindner 32° Masonic Learning Centers for Children. All donations to the foundation are tax deductible in accordance with I.R.S. requirements. For further information on charitable giving to the foundation, please contact the Scottish Rite office.

Students who seek financial as-sistance for college should remember that many Masonic bodies have funds set aside to assist children of members and Masonic youth. The Grand Lodge of Ohio, Order of DeMolay, and Job’s Daughters are among the many Masonic organizations to contact for scholarships.

IN MEMORIAM

BRIDGES PROGRAM • FEBRUARY 6, 2010 • CINCINNATI MASONIC CENTERRecord amounts of snow blanketed Cincinnati during the month of February and, as luck would have it, a major winter storm clobbered the city the weekend of the Bridges Program. Still, hundreds of Scottish Rite Masons and more than 40 eager can-didates braved the inclemencies of the weather to be a part of the Bridges Program, a truly inspirational and historic moment in the Valley of Cincinnati.

The roads proved dangerous and, ultimately, impassable for the buses carrying degree teams and equipment from Dayton, Columbus, and Indianapolis. However, each of those Valleys was represented at the event. We were also proud to welcome Ill. Bro. John Wm. McNaughton, 33°, Sovereign Grand Com-

mander of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction; Ill. Bro. Jim S. Deyo, 33°, Grand Lieutenant Commander of the Northern Ma- sonic Jurisdiction; Ill. Bro. Neil M. Smalley, 33°, Deputy for Ohio; Ill. Bro. Robert O. Ralston, 33°, Past Sovereign Grand Commander of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction; and other special guests.

Our very own Gibulum Lodge of Perfection portrayed the 4°, Master Traveler, and gave the candidates a sampling of the many additional degrees to come in the Scottish Rite journey. The Valley of Covington then exemplified the Southern Juris-diction’s 30°, Knight of Kadosh, and treated everyone to a very unique degree filled with important lessons. Brethren then en-

BRIDGES PROGRAM • FEBRUARY 6, 2010 • CINCINNATI MASONIC CENTERjoyed lunch catered by Skyline Chili. It is safe to say the serv-ings of 3-Way chili were of epic proportion, the likes of which won’t be matched any time soon.

The day ended after lunch, and even though participants witnessed just two of the five degrees scheduled for the event, the Bridges Program created a new level of fellowship and gen-erated a great deal of excitement for our Spring Reunion, sched-uled for April 10, which will feature the DeMolay Degree—yet another first for the Scottish Rite.

“The fantastic success of the Bridges program was a result of the collective efforts of the members who toiled to make the day great,” says Wor. Bro. Todd McIntosh, general chair-

man of the event. “The enjoyment of having introduced 42 new members to the excitement that is the Valley of Cincinnati is as great as the thrill of the several Valleys of the Northern and Southern Jurisdictions coming together for moving degrees and the fun of super-giant helpings of chili! While we missed many who were snowbound by a storm that crippled most of Ohio and Kentucky, more than 350 of the 850 Brothers who reserved seats brought new life to our Grand Lady of Freemasonry and witnessed the moving ritual that is so very valuable to our grow-ing membership.”
