Who are we?
Sustainability Stewards at NC State
❖ Founded in 2012❖ Student organization designed to enable students to educate
peers and catalyze change to improve sustainability on campus.
❖ ~40 students from many majors and all years

Stewards Project Groups❖ Projects are decided through a democratic process each
semester❖ Education is a shared goal for all project teams❖ Groups for the 2016-2017 year include:
➢ Energy ➢ Compost➢ Waste Reduction & Recycling ➢ Outreach and Education

Why solar energy?
❖ Our Campus Footprint❖ Sustainability Strategic Plan
➢ Reduce energy use by 30% by 2015
➢ Implement green standards and practices forinformation technology and computing.
➢ Carbon neutral by 2050❖ Solar initiative can help reach these
goals.

Small Scale Solar at NC State❖ Conduct preliminary research and gather student support❖ Tie in university partners (faculty, staff, and administration)❖ Submit grant proposals to the NC State Sustainability Fund ❖ Successful funding for two projects:
- Central Campus Solar Umbrellas ($30,000)- Witherspoon Bus Stop ($11,000)
![Page 8: The Rise of Renewables: Implementing Small-Scale Solar ......Student involvement in campus sustainability initiatives Collaboration between campus partners (students, faculty, staff,](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022052015/602deebcd16a283048015e17/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Central Campus Solar Umbrellas❖ Currently, 12 umbrellas across campus
❖ Solar panels power ion battery hubs with 162 watts each
❖ Combined effort of NC State Stewards, University Architects, and University Housing
❖ Cost: ~$1,600-$2,600
Post-installation surveys demonstrate highly favorable student opinion of the project
![Page 9: The Rise of Renewables: Implementing Small-Scale Solar ......Student involvement in campus sustainability initiatives Collaboration between campus partners (students, faculty, staff,](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022052015/602deebcd16a283048015e17/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Witherspoon Bus Stop❖ Expand on success experienced with solar umbrellas
❖ Pre-project survey provided overwhelmingly
positive student responses
❖ Promote alternative transportation and
renewable energy on campus
❖ Panels power USB outlets to charge phones and tablets
❖ Combined effort of NC State Stewards, University Architects, Transportation, Facilities, and Tolar Manufacturing
❖ Installation will be finished by the end of March of this year.

Solar Spring Break
❖ Partnering with Grid Alternatives to host NC State’s first Solar Spring Break
❖ Where: Town between San Francisco, CA and San Diego, CA
❖ Learning experience focused on renewable energy in low income communities➢ Installation of solar photovoltaics with licensed solar panel installer
➢ Nonprofit management
➢ Community outreach
❖ UNC, Duke, and NC State are all sending teams this year
