Few can doubt the enormous impact of a 7+ magnitude earthquake on health and regionalinfrastructure.

In the past six months, there have been 13 earthquakes around the world of at least 7.0 or more on theRichter scale. Earthquakes above 5 are up 125% compared to their average frequency over the lasthundred years.

Earthquakes above 7 can cause serious damage over larger areas and may several hundred milesacross. The earthquake in theMaule Regionof Chile in February, 2010, was equivalent to a the energyyield of a 238 TNT megaton explosion.

Statistics compiled by CRED show there were 22 earthquake disasters in 2009, compared with anannual average of 30 between 2000 and 2008.

The number of earthquakes greater than magnitude 4.0 in Southern California and Baja California hasincreased significantly in 2010. There have been 70 such quakes so far this year, the most of any yearin the last decade. And it's only April. There were 30 in 2009 and 29 in 2008.

Seismologists said they are studying the uptick but cannot fully explain it. Major earthquakes tend tooccur in cycles, and experts have said the region in recent years has been in a quiet cycle when itcomes to sizable temblors.

The data used in the analysis below were collected from theUSGS (United States Geological Survey)as of June 30, 2010 and going back to to the year 1900. The number ofearthquakes were averagedsince 1900 in each magnitude range (5.0 to 5.9, 6.0 - 6.9, 7.0 to 7.9, and 8.0 to 9.9), and also averaged

on the same data over the last 10 years.The data was then compared with current earthquake statistics so far in 2010.

Earthquakes of magnitude 5 - 5.9 have increased by 27 percent (127% of normal)compared with same range of earthquakes over the last 10 years.

Earthquakes of magnitude 5 - 5.9 have increased by 49 percent (149% of normal)compared with same range of earthquakes since the year 1900.

Earthquakes of magnitude 6 - 6.9 have increased by 26 percent (126% of normal)compared with same range of earthquakes over the last 10 years.

Earthquakes of magnitude 6 - 6.9 have increased by 36 percent (136% of normal)compared with same range of earthquakes since the year 1900.

Earthquakes of magnitude 7 - 7.9 have increased by 39 percent (139% of normal)compared with same range of earthquakes over the last 10 years.

Earthquakes of magnitude 7 - 7.9 have increased by 22 percent (122% of normal)compared with same range of earthquakes since the year 1900.

Earthquakes of magnitude 8 - 9.9 have equaled the average of 1 (100% normal)compared with same range of earthquakes over the last 10 years.

The biggest problem, according to geophysicists is that the tectonic plate shifts have increased thenumber of serious earthquakes in the past one-year an enormous amount and the rate is exponentiallyincreasing.

Scientists are blaming the Polar reversal and these will continue till2012.Very rarelythe Sun and the Earth simultaneously reverses polarity. That is exactly what is happeningnow. When this happens catastrophes happen in the earth. If history is a guide of anything, theseearthquakes and volcanoes will continue to increase till 2012.
