Designed by award winning architect PTW, Vance itself maintains much of the charm and glamour of the paceway, more familiarly known as ‘the trots’. In the 1950s and 1960s it was the social hub of the inner west of Sydney and thousands upon thousands of excited spectators would line the stands every Friday night to watch the races take place.

If you were lucky enough to attend a race meeting at Harold Park, chances are you would have arrived by a tram that terminated at the Rozelle Tramsheds. Now representing yet another way Mirvac has retained firm ties with the past, this historical building will be given a brand new lease on life with a meticulous restoration.

Following the transformation, the Tramsheds will be reinstated as the centrepiece of the community. A food lovers paradise, the vision inspired by the glorious food halls of Europe, encompassing a spectacular array of speciality meats and deli goods, artesian cheeses and fresh farmer’s produce.

Gwyn Olsen has a zest for life. Listening to her inspirational story over

an antipasto plate and glass of her award winning Semillon while her

doting schnauzer Spencer bounces at our feet, it is easy to understand why.


So what’s the secret of her success?

“Getting constant exposure to a wide range of wines is a big factor and helps me to innovate. I’m lucky enough to judge at six wine shows throughout Australia, including National Wine Shows in Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane as well as eating out in Sydney restaurants whenever I can. I love Rockpool for its incredible wine list,” Gwyn says.

After completing her Oenology at Roseworthy University in Adelaide, Gwyn has worked all over the world. From Villa Maria in Auckland where she cut her teeth to Languedoc, St Emillion and Burgundy in France where she worked three vintages, Gwyn’s experiences have inspired her to try different winemaking styles.

“I love to push the boundaries and try new things when it comes to winemaking. Recently I experimented with blending several varieties off a unique vineyard block to create the 2014 ‘The Briar’ blend, which has been really popular. Employing simple wine techniques meant the wine expressed the unique traits of the vineyard,” she added.

According to Gwyn therein lies the key to her success and the reason behind the booming sales. “These days people are looking for wines with a strong sense of place. They like to know where the grapes have been grown, how they’ve been tended and harvested. I’ve worked hard to make our wines unique to Briar Ridge,” she said.

“I love to push the boundaries and try new

things when it comes to winemaking.”

Appointed as Chief Winemaker and General Manager at Briar Ridge Winery in 2014, Gwyn was tasked with restoring this iconic brand to its former glory as one

of the Hunter Valley’s finest boutique wineries. She has wasted no time in infusing her own signature style throughout the range – to the delight of wine lovers across the region.

Winner of the prestigious Gourmet Traveller WINE’s Young Winemaker Medal in September 2014 and more recently named Rising Star of the Year at the Hunter Valley Legends Awards 2015, Gwyn is fast becoming as famous as her wines. In addition, three trophies for her 2014 Briar Ridge “Dairy Hill” Single Vineyard Semillon, and another for the 2013 Briar Ridge “Dairy Hill” Single Vineyard Shiraz, have cemented her place as a rising star of the Australian wine industry.

So for someone who has achieved so much in a relatively short amount of time, what does the future hold?

“I’ve got exciting plans for Briar Ridge. As well as continuing to create new and different wines, we hope to play a big role in making wines more accessible. Fine wines are often limited to formal occasions or judged to be the domain of connoisseurs. It’s time to strip away the pomp and grandeur. People should know it’s fine to enjoy wine in a relaxed environment. Even with pizza, on the sofa in your trackies one evening mid-week, if that’s your taste!” she said.

Gwyn’s commitment to making fine wine more accessible and her love of takeaway have inspired one of Briar Ridge’s more unusual events this season.

BudFest at Briar is a unique concept that matches fine wines with takeaway dinners. Guests can enjoy Semillon with fish and chips, Shiraz with cheeseburgers, the HRB with sausage rolls, and the Verdelho with spring rolls and Pad Thai. Such was the success of the inaugural event last year its become an annual fixture.

Jacinta Woods and Sonia Warner, the sought-after designers from Designers in the City, have just what you need to get your cosy on – in sublime style – this winter.

This season there’s a strong move towards more organic shapes, with bold primary colours paired back with dusty mid-tone shades, Jacinta and Sonia explain.

“Everything is about relaxed, casual elegance. Soft and tactile is the approach. To spice things up, elaborate marble and natural stones with highlights of brass and copper are still very present. While furniture designs are more dramatic in their execution, there is a looser and more feminine softness to rugs, throws, cushions and lighting,” says Jacinta.

RUG UP IN

STYLEAs the winter chill sets in across much of the

country, its time to retreat to the warmth and comfort of our homes. With just a few stylish

touches you can make sure your pad is winter ready and stay up to date with the latest

seasonal trends at the same time.


This season’s must have design items The Designers in the City team say interior trends are increasingly pairing natural materials with deep toned soft furnishings, accentuating both with a splash of brass in lighting or accessories.

“There’s a dominant trend towards natural, solid timbers that have a simple and honest design aesthetic. To achieve the look right now head out to the shops or talk to your favourite interior designer,” says Sonia.

The key to creating cosy spaces is lighting that’s warm and inviting. One lighting designer to keep an eye on is Volker Haug from Melbourne, which has released a unique range of lights that glow with a minimalist aesthetic.

Simple touchesEveryone loves to rug up in winter and introducing a handful of fabulous rugs and throws is an effortless way of updating your interior style. Many of the major local rug brands are spearheading trends, giving an abundance of choice and designs.

Says Sonia: “There is a huge movement towards hand-knotted rugs, which provide texture and soft lustre through mixed materials woven into them. Hand knotted rugs have an irregular pattern and natural imperfections are a feature, at the same time providing a spectacular art installation on your floor.”

“For extra cosiness, pair your chosen rug with dusty mid-tone cushions and throws. Skip patterns and reach for the bolder tones to offset your subtle and luxurious rug.”

There is clearly something about Baldivis. Just 35 minutes from Perth down the Kwinana Freeway, the suburb has for many years been a well-kept

secret among West Australians in the know. But since being named the fastest growing suburb in Australia, more people are hearing about its sought-after status – testament to the increasing popularity of Perth and its surrounds among savvy homebuyers.

Plus there’s excellent surfing and kiteboarding to be had. If you fancy getting up close and personal with the local wildlife, Rockingham is famous for the dolphins and penguins that regularly visit local inlets.

But Baldivis and its surrounds don’t just boast a fabulous aquatic lifestyle. Head inland for just a few kilometres and there’s an array of natural attractions.

One of the best is the Serpentine Falls and national park. These striking waterfalls are an ideal option if you’re looking for an effortless day trip or picturesque picnic spot. And winter’s the perfect time to do one of the popular local bushwalks. The area is popular for its wildflower displays, with peak season from now until September, when the hills will be a glorious riot of colour.

There are lots of distinguished wineries in the area if you’re looking for a leisurely weekend activity. The Baldivis Karnup wine trail is a perennial favourite with locals and visitors alike. With harvest well behind them, now’s the time of year when the wine makers are able to tell you all about this year’s vintage, and give you the inside running on which wines are their very best.

But when Monday rolls around, Baldivis is only a short commute back to Perth. So it’s a great option for people who value a quick trip to the office. There are also many good local schools in the area – public and private – with more scheduled to open soon. There is an abundance of reliable public transport, as well as a bike track to Perth, if free-wheeling is your preference.

There’s no doubt we’ll be hearing a lot more about this exciting region. Its close proximity to the Perth CBD, plus ultimate downtime options, means it’s likely Baldivis and its surrounds won’t remain a local secret for much longer.

Picking a winner was an extremely tough decision – and the judges were thrilled by all the great shots that were posted with the hashtag #iloveharcrest.

As the entries show, it’s a community where food is a passion, given all the great photos sent in featuring breakfast, lunch and dinner. Photos of kids having a fun time in the neighbourhood also feature prominently in the images – if you’re growing up in Harcrest, it’s more than likely you’re having a wonderful childhood.

We eventually settled on Cathie Peries’ photo of all the residents enjoying a film at the outdoor cinema as the winning image. The Peries have lived at Harcrest since August 2013. Cathie and her sports physiotherapist husband Sriyan even brought their first child, baby Jude, back home there in January after he was born.

Cathie explains what they love about Harcrest is the parks, community garden and cafes. “But most of all we love the friendships we’ve developed within our neighbourhood.”

Over the last 18 months the Peries have put a lot of work into designing, furnishing and decorating their beautiful house and garden. The $2,000 Freedom Furniture gift voucher they won as their prize has come in very handy.

“While we had already bought the big ticket items for our master bedroom like our bed and dresser, we have now been able to finish the room and style the reading nook I’d always wanted,” says Cathie.

The Peries received help with styling from The Block’s Josh and Jenna as part of their prize. “By having them come to our house, they could see our personal style and help us shop for items, which added a professional touch to the look we were going for,” Cathie says.

“They were able to show us how to add depth and colour to a room to make it our own personal space without becoming cluttered. They gave us great tips on how to bring colours and textures together in the one room with the use of cushions, artwork and rugs,” she adds.

The Peries received an added bonus because they were able to use their Freedom voucher while its sale was on. “We were able to buy a couple of armchairs, a side table, cushions, throw rugs, vases and candles.”

The result is a stylish, modern and elegant feel in the Peries’ home. Says Cathie: “Starting with the original build, we have designed our house in a very classic and understated style. Each of the bedrooms has been given a little more personality and for our master bedroom we’ve gone with a slightly nautical look.”

The effect is quite stunning, thanks in no small part to the finishing touches and the attention to detail they were able to achieve with their prize.

The Pillars Project in Brisbane offered a chance to extend a creative partnership with community artists and contribute positively to the local

streetscape, providing Mirvac the chance to support the thriving art

and cultural scene in the City.

A striking, permanent reminder of the historic G20 meeting of world leaders in Brisbane in 2014 is The Pillars Project. The project is

an outdoor art gallery curated on the huge pylons that support Brisbane’s railway line. Eight local artists were invited to contribute a work and their colourful creations are true masterpieces.

Fittingly, the home of The Pillars Project is South Brisbane, the cultural centre of the city and home to the Queensland Art Gallery and museums. The area is in the midst of a $4 billion urban renewal project. Mirvac is a proud sponsor of The Pillars Project and is committed to helping raise the profile of talented young Australian artists.

More important than its location, however, is the message The Pillars Project sends about the importance of public art. It’s the first large-scale street art project for Brisbane and a platform for young artists to begin a dialogue with the public about their work and their messages.

One of the artists is Fintan Magee, whose oeuvre appears across 10 countries. His contribution follows a theme in his present body of work that depicts the Queensland floods – both the positives and negatives from this disaster. Commenting on the project, Fintan says: “it’s important for emerging artists who don’t show in galleries and it’s good for the city.”

Another of the project’s artists, Simon Degroot, whose work reimagines architectural shapes, believes it adds to the many changes Brisbane has experienced over the past few years. While artist Mik Shida says it’s an important space for local artists to show their works.

With Mirvac’s Art House development immersed in the city’s innovative heart, there were a number of obvious synergies with The Pillars Project. The team assisted by contributing expertise to help raise awareness of Pillars through marketing, PR, branding, website creation and promotions.

Julian Venning, Mirvac Design Director explains that The Pillars Project isn’t the only way in which Mirvac is celebrating art at Art House.

“Located at the heart of the city’s art precinct within walking distance of the Queensland Museum and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, the design of the residential tower responds to this highly creative context. Its woven sculptural façade wraps around the building and an artistic interpretation of ‘the fluidity

of movement’ from architects RotheLowman is depicted in the white vertical and horizontal interwoven bands of the podium and tower,” he said.

The Art House foyer will also become an artistic feature, showcasing work by leading public artist Rowena Martinich, who is known for her use of vibrant colour and light. Her incredible multi-media installation was selected after a competitive process through which some of Australia’s most highly respected artists

were invited to submit proposals.

“Rowena’s vision is to break up the long, narrow foyer area with light and colour. Even before residents and visitors enter the building they are invited to engage with it through her judicious and intriguing use of colour across the entrance. Inside, a series of brightly coloured floor-to-ceiling fins draw the eye towards the end of the corridor, assisted by an over-sized mirror that augments the space,” he added.

With a signature style that has made her one of the world’s most recognised and revered illustrators, Megan Hess tells us how she set the stratosphere alight with a touch of old world glamour.

The name Megan Hess is synonymous with luxe, luxe and more luxe. Most recently, she has been the brains behind the interior

furnishings for the uber-chic East Penthouse at Mirvac’s Array building in Melbourne. You may not know her name, but you will almost certainly know her work.

Megan’s art has graced the windows of one of the world’s most famous jewellery companies, Tiffany & Co. Clients such as Balenciaga, Chanel, Fendi and Hermes, to name but a few, all clamour for her now iconic fashion illustrations.

Her breakthrough came when the phone rang very late one night, almost a decade ago. The caller asked her if she’d be interested in illustrating the next book cover for a “New York Times best-selling author’s new book.” The author turned out to be Candace Bushnell, who wrote the column that was the inspiration for the television series Sex and the City.

Megan went on to illustrate 20 more book covers, when Bushnell’s previous works were re-released globally to coincide with the launch of One Fifth Avenue, the first book she illustrated. “When I finished I went to New York and my illustrations were on billboards in Times Square and all over the taxis. Within one week Chanel,

Dior and Vanity Fair had approached me to work for them and I have been able to build my career from there.”

Beginning her life as a graphic designer, Megan always had her sights set on a career as a fashion illustrator. She went from graphic design into full-time illustration “taking every job I could get.” On the day she received that midnight call from New York, she had been working on an illustration of a pizza for a difficult client. At breaking point, she was considering her future when the call came.

“It was a turning point that had a snowball effect. I never thought I would be working for the biggest names in fashion and it all came from one big project.”

The caller asked her if she’d be interested in illustrating the next book cover for a “New York Times best-selling

“We wanted to make our home beautiful and luxurious, but

also tough enough so the kids can be kids. It’s very airy and we’ve built spaces that suit us

Home body

In her private space, Megan’s style is slightly different. The mother of two young children (her daughter is nine and her son is five), she has created her home in the roof of a church in Port Melbourne, gutting the cavernous space to build an elegant four-bedroom, three bathroom retreat.

The predominant colour palette is black and white, which always looks fresh, but can also withstand the rough and tumble of two children.

“We wanted to make our home beautiful and luxurious, but also tough enough so the kids can be kids. It’s very airy and we’ve built spaces that suit us as a family,” she says.


Classic glamourMegan’s work for the Array building is the first time she has designed every single element of an apartments decor, from the furniture to the art to the wallpaper and the rugs. She has used a mixture of her own drawings and arresting black and white photography as the home’s art, with stunning effect.

“It was a big project and lots of the furniture has been custom made, for example the Fendi couches,” she explains.

Megan’s signature style is infused throughout the space. Her vision comes from the style icons of the past. For instance, film maker Alfred Hitchcock was the inspiration for one of the rooms. His muse was Grace Kelly, who appeared in many of his films. It’s easy to imagine Kelly slinking around the room. “My aim is to inject an element of old-world glamour in a modern way,” Megan says.

From her illustrations, to her work on the East Penthouse, to her own home, Megan is the epitome of style.

Megan’s signature style is infused throughout the space.

Her vision comes from the style icons of the past.

Renowned dietitian Dr Joanna McMillan is a passionate advocate for maintaining a healthy lifestyle all year round, and especially during the colder

months when our immunity can be lower and we are especially susceptible to illness.

Jo inherited from her mum a lifelong fascination with and commitment to leading a healthful life.

“She was a fantastic cook and I’ve always loved getting into the kitchen too. Then as I got older, I became increasingly interested in the health effects of what we eat,” explains Jo.

Initially training as a fitness instructor, she then went back to university to study nutrition and dietetics. She followed this with a PhD when she moved to Australia in 1999 and worked further in nutrition science research.

“In the last 10 years I have built my business around helping people to understand the science around healthy living, clearing up the mixed messages in the media and inspiring people to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” she explains.

“Eating and living well is not just about weight control, it affects how much energy you have for work and play, your mental health, mood and performance at work,” she says.

Dr Jo’s top tips

The first step to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is putting aside time to eat properly and exercise, Jo explains.

“It comes down to priorities. While there will of course be days that you really can’t find the time to exercise, if we’re honest there are also many times when we could have made it happen if we had used our time management skills effectively.”

She suggests getting out your diary on a Sunday and scheduling in your exercise sessions. “Even if it’s just a half hour walk, put it in your diary and treat it like any other meeting. If you have to reschedule it then do, but don’t just delete it.”

Then have a plan, even if it’s just a rough one, of what your meals will be in the upcoming week. Stock your kitchen with healthy whole foods to make it as easy as possible to eat well.

“We need to eat differently in winter. But rather than resorting to heavy, rich food, make soups, casseroles, roasts and curries, sticking to whole food, plant-rich principles,” says Jo.

“I use my Dr Joanna Plate to teach people how to create a healthy meal. The strength of this model is its flexibility. It works just as well for a summer salad as it does for a winter roast dinner,” she adds. The Dr Joanna Plate is a method of ensuring the right balance between plant-based foods, proteins, smart carbs and good fats in every meal.

Finally, Jo recommends really thinking about how and when you eat. “Snacking tends to be a disaster as you end up eating too much of the wrong things, keeping the body in a state of being fed all day. Instead give your body a break between meals and rely on stored energy. If you’re truly hungry and have more than two hours until mealtime then choose something simple like a handful of nuts or a yoghurt with a piece of fruit”

CHICKEN QUINOA & KALE SOUP

Serves 4, Cooking time 30 mins

Ingredients1 onion, finely chopped1 clove garlic, finely chopped2 stalks of celery, finely chopped2 carrots, finely diced½ bunch kale (or other robust greens such as silver beet or savoy cabbage)

1 cup (320g) leftover cooked chicken meat, shredded½ cup quinoa, uncooked1 tb extra virgin olive oil1L chicken stock (homemade or good quality bought), cracked black pepper & sea salt to taste

Method Heat the oil in a large saucepan and sauté the onion, garlic and celery for a few minutes until soft. Add the carrot and sauté for a couple of minutes more. Add the stock and quinoa to the pan and simmer for about 15 minutes until the quinoa is cooked. Add the kale and shredded chicken. Season to taste. Simmer until the kale is wilted and serve immediately (otherwise the kale will lose its gorgeous bright green colour).


PINEAPPLE ZUCCHINI BREAD

Serves 12, Cooking time 1 hr 45 mins

Ingredients1 small zucchini, grated1/2 pineapple, skin & core removed & chopped finely1/4 cup raisins3 eggs1/4 cup milk2 cups self-raising stoneground wholegrain flour1/2 cup brown sugar1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp nutmeg

MethodPreheat the oven to 180°C. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, oil and milk together. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and combine, being careful not to over mix. Add the pineapple, zucchini and raisins, stir gently to combine. Pour the mixture into a greased and lined (5 cup capacity) loaf tin.

Bake in the oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. Set aside for 10 minutes in pan before turning out onto a wire rack to cool. Serve with remaining pineapple.

Ingredients1 cup skim milk (or full cream if you prefer)

1 tsp pure cocoa powder

1 stick cinnamon

1 star anise, grating of nutmeg

MethodCombine the milk, cocoa powder and spices in a small pan. Place over moderate heat and whisk the cocoa powder into the milk as it heats. Allow the flavours to mingle for a few minutes and serve in a warm mug. I like to leave the spices floating, but if you prefer you can remove these prior to drinking.

HOT SPICED COCOA


Ingredients1 bunch broccolini

1 free range egg

400g snapper fillets, skin removed

2 large kumera (600g), scrubbed with skin left on

2 slices sourdough grainy bread, made into breadcrumbs in the food processor

1/2 tb extra virgin olive oil

1/2 cup shredded coconut

MethodPreheat the oven to 180°C. Cut the kumera into chip shapes, lay on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Drizzle or spray with extra virgin olive oil. Sprinkle with a little sea salt. Bake in oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Cut the fish into finger shapes. Whisk the egg with a fork in a bowl. In a separate bowl mix the coconut with the breadcrumbs and fresh black pepper.

Dip the fish in the egg and then coat with the coconut mixture. Lay on a baking tray lining with parchment paper. Add to the oven half way through cooking the kumera chips - the fish will only take around 15 minutes. They should look slightly browned. Do not overcook or the fish will dry out.

Steam or microwave the broccolini for 2 minutes, so that it is still slightly crunchy and a bright green. Mix the kumera chips with broccolini spears and pile onto plates (or paper as we have done) and top with the fish fingers.

Learn what you loveTrain your eye by visiting exhibitions so you know what is out there. Each gallery has a different aesthetic and a unique group of artists, so you need to keep your eyes open to get to know what you love. Once you have honed in on that special work, learning as much as you can about the art you buy and the artist who made the work, will extend your appreciation of the pieces you take home.

Andy started collecting art 25 years ago. Over that time, she’s learnt everything there is to know about buying and selling art. So for those

who are more than a little confused when it comes to selecting key pieces for your home, here are her top tips on collecting art:

Do your homeworkThere is a wealth of resources available to educate yourself as to what is out there. Talk to gallery staff for advice, they want you to love what you buy and will help you find the right piece. Go to lectures and artist in conversation events at public institutions, commercial galleries and artist-run spaces. You’ll meet the artists and talk to them about the work and you will also meet like-minded collectors. Sign up for email alerts from galleries, browse art publications and blogs, follow galleries, artists and art commentators on social media and attend art fairs for a ‘snapshot’ of the gallery scene.

Mix it up Art is not decoration; it should be an extension of who you are. So don’t worry about matching to your cushions or your rug, if you love the work it will work in your home. Don’t be shy of placing contemporary art in period homes, just as historic art works in the slick contemporary institution galleries, so too will reversing the mix. I recently installed an amazing geometric light-based sculpture by Jason Sims in a Victorian home and it looks incredible.

Define your collectionDefining your collecting parameters can be really helpful when starting to build an art collection. As you train your eye you will find you are drawn to certain themes and media. You might find that you engage with art that makes a social or political statement. Or you might find you’re more comfortable collecting pieces by artists who work in small editions, such as photographers and video artists.

4 Trust your instincts and buy what you love This is the most important part of building a collection. Art should take you to another place. If you collect works you love to live with, all the other ‘rules’ can go out the window.

Andy Dinan knows art. The founder of Melbourne’s MARS Gallery, she has dedicated her working life to exhibiting, promoting and building the

profile of mid-career and emerging contemporary Australian artists.

Andy founded the gallery in 2004 with the idea that art should be accessible and non-elitist. From its new home in Windsor, Victoria, MARS now has a custom black-box gallery for video art, a light-box room for the display of sound sculpture and light art, as well as a drawing room to exhibit works on paper.

Andy’s picks for emerging artists to keep an eye out for.

Tricky WalshTricky is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is concerned with the integration of mysticism with scientific reasoning. Her work, which is architectural in nature, and broadly spatial in practice, uses the construction of concepts and devices, which allow for the development of both physical and philosophical systems of discovery and invention.

Jo BertiniJo is currently undertaking a ten-year project as Expedition Artist with ‘Australian Desert Expeditions’, travelling with a string of pack camels and group of esteemed experts from a range of national institutions and across various academic and scientific disciplines, on ecological, archeological and indigenous research into the most remote and inaccessible regions of Australian deserts.

Demian GibbinsDemian is a Melbourne based visual artist. His unique geo-impressionist style and his interpretation of landscapes generates a vast sense of space, drawing the viewer’s eye to a distant horizon.

The sum of the scale of horizon and canvas combine to deliver a sudden, forceful impact. The physical immensity of the landscape is emphasised by a vibrant but controlled palette.

There are lots of easy ways to cut down your energy consumption and still ensure your

home remains toasty warm this winter.

“If you have a ceiling fan, there’s a little button you can press on it to put it in reverse. These fans are mostly designed to cool, but changing their direction so they turn clockwise helps push hot air downwards and keep rooms nice and warm. It’s a really cheap way of re-distributing warm air,” he explains.

Proper management of heaters is another important way of staving off the cold. Jon says a common mistake people make is to choose the cheapest heater possible. But this can be a false economy as inexpensive heaters are often inefficient energy users, which leads to energy bills skyrocketing. Instead, invest in the most energy efficient heater you can afford.

Another tip is to select a heater with multiple settings. By choosing a low watt setting – say 400 watts as opposed to 24000 watts – you’ll be able to dramatically reduce the likelihood of bill shock.

And if you’re using an older reverse cycle air conditioner as a source of heat this winter, you might want to consider buying a new, more energy-efficient unit. Jon says newer models are up to 40 per cent more efficient than older models, leading to big savings on your energy bills.

“Make sure you have the hot air vent angled downwards to heat up rooms faster and help overcome the tendency for hot air to rise,” says Jon.

“Also try to use the sun’s energy as much as you can to heat your home. So if it has a northerly aspect, open the curtains so north-facing rooms warm up naturally. Another great piece of advice is to use a heat mat to put your feet on rather than a heater that will warm the whole room. This will keep you cosy and at the same time help manage your energy costs,” he adds.

Aside from choosing the right heater, there are lots of other ways to ensure your bills don’t leave you out in the cold. It might be simple common sense, but one tried and true technique is to only heat the rooms you’re using, rather than the whole property.

“Also ensure your thermostat on the heater is set to between 18 and 20 degrees. Every degree you set it above 20 degrees adds 10 per cent to your energy bill. So if you have your thermostat set to 26 degrees you’re potentially adding 60 per cent to your winter heating costs,” Jon says.

Once you have your heating right, it’s important to make sure that as much warm air as possible stays in your home, rather than escapes through cracks. One way to find draughts is to wet your hand and run it around places like windowsills, skirting boards and down lights. By sealing any gaps you find you’ll be able to trap more hot air in and keep cool air out.

A final tip, says Jon, is to switch from halogen to LED lights in your ceiling. This is because insulation can be placed closer to LED lights than halogen lights, to help stop heat escaping upwards.
