Mumps OutbreakThe northwest Arkansas Mumps outbreak continues to grow, with 492 individuals involved in the outbreak as of Tuesday. Cases have been seen in the Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville, and Huntsville school districts. The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is urging residents in these areas to make sure they and their loved ones are up-to-date on their Mumps, Measles, Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Anyone who plans on visiting or passing through these areas should make sure they are up to date on their vaccinations prior to visiting. OMC offers MMR vaccine, as well as titers to verify immunity if previously vaccinated or vaccination status is unknown, free of charge for employees through Employee Health.

The current CDC recommendations for MMR vaccination are as follows:• For children younger than 6 years of age, one dose of MMR vaccine at age 12-15 months, followed by a second dose of

MMR vaccine at age 4-6 years.• For children age 7 through 18 years not previously vaccinated, one dose of MMR vaccine or MMRV (Mumps, Measles,

Rubella, and Varicella) vaccine, followed by a second dose of either MMR vaccine or MMRV vaccine at least 4 weeks after the first dose.

• In outbreak situations, a third dose of the MMR vaccine may be safely recommended in certain settings where trans-mission has occurred, such as schools.

• For adults born in 1957 or later and not previously vaccinated, one dose of MMR vaccine.• A second dose of MMR vaccine is recommended for adults born in 1957 or later, who are students in a post-second-

ary educational institution, work in a health care facility, or plan to travel internationally. The second dose should be administered a minimum of 28 days after the first dose.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Urgent Need for Blood DonorsOMC and American Red Cross Blood Drive October 27Ozarks Medical Center’s (OMC) and the American Red Cross will host a blood drive Thursday, October 27, from noon until 6 p.m., at the Willard Hunter Classroom in the OMC Park-way Center.

The American Red Cross has issued a critical appeal for blood and platelet donors across the country. With the nation’s blood supply facing significantly low inventory levels, the blood community encourages individuals throughout the U.S. to schedule an appointment to donate today.

“Right now, Red Cross blood products are being distributed to hos-pitals as quickly as donations come in,” said Miriam A. Markowitz, CEO of AABB. “Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is indispensable and required in the treatment of millions of patients, including individuals with cancer and other life-threat-ening diseases, patients undergoing organ transplants and trauma victims.”

If you haven’t donated blood before you will need a blood donor card or driver’s license -- or two other forms of identification -- at check-in. You need to be 17 years of age (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

RapidPass is available to donors and allows them to complete their pre-reading and donation questions online from the comfort and privacy of their home or office; reducing the time they spend at the blood drive by up to 15 minutes. Visit redcrossblood.org/Rapid-Pass, read the information, answer the questions, and print the pass or email it to themselves to show when they check in at the blood drive. RapidPass must be completed the same day as the donation. Donors are still encouraged to schedule an appointment online.

“We are encouraging everyone to give. The entire process will only take about an hour. It is amazing that with just a short time out of your day, you can help save a life,” said Joan Hanff, OMC Lab Services Director.

Consider making a difference by donating blood at the next blood drive. Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. About 44,000 pints of blood are needed in the U.S. every day. Almost everyone will know someone in their lifetime who has the need for blood. Only 38% of the population is eligible to donate, but only about 8% of those who are eligible actually donate.

For more information, visit redcrossblood.org, or call the OMC Public Relations Department at 417-257-6735.

Grizzly Volleyball Pink Out GameThe Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly Volleyball team will host their Pink Out Game on Tuesday, October 25. Game time is 6:30 p.m. We will be manning the gates from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. We need a few volunteers to hand out mammogram information at the gates. To volunteer, contact Melissa Smith at extension 6737 or email [email protected].
