Michael said, “The cardiac rehab girls are very kind and caring and I love that they have a balanced approach while making me feel welcomed and comfortable with the facilities here. When my world was, quite frankly, turned upside down, the therapists made a big difference in my sense of well-being.”

Michael expressed how important it is to maintain a healthy diet, as well as remaining physically active. “I always swam laps for my cardio exercise, but I’m excited to do more biking.”

Michael feels physically and mentally well and has confidence in a full recovery, thanks to the Richland Hospital Cardiac Rehab Team.

Staying Active…

Keeping your family healthy at Spring Green Medical Center, A Division of The Richland Hospital, Inc.;

Dr. Thomas Richardson, Dr. Cristine Cornelius and Stephen Wolk, PA-C

here are many benefits to being

physically active as a family. Exercise

is an important part of a healthy

lifestyle. Positive connections as a

family also lead to an improved sense

of wellbeing. Combining these two

factors has benefits for all involved.

Getting kids moving from a young

age, and connecting that to family

togetherness and fun, can establish

positive lifelong habits for physical

activity. When you regularly

participate in enjoyable active family

time, family members will be more

likely to choose a physical activity

when deciding on an activity.

as a Family

Keeping your family healthy at Muscoda Health Center, A Division of The Richland Hospital, Inc.;

Dr. Andrew Wright, Dr. Robin Butrick, Katie Puls, APNP and Karen Sinnett, APNP

In addition to the exercise benefit, it

also provides meaningful bonding

time, opportunity for conversation,

and a chance to encourage team

building and problem solving.

Outdoor activities can foster a greater

appreciation of and respect for nature,

sports can provide an outlet for a

competitive spirit, and any activity can

provide a sense of accomplishment in

doing something healthy for yourself

and family. Other families might even

be encouraged to try these or similar

activities when they see the benefit

and enjoyment your family gets in

being active together.

So get out there, have fun, be active and be healthy.

Knowing the Facts Can Change Your Life Sepsis is your body’s response to infection which may result in organ failure if left untreated.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are approximately 1 million cases of sepsis per year killing more than 258,000 Americans per year.

Sepsis is most commonly found amongst older adults or those individuals with weakened immune systems. It can come from any source of infection but most commonly results from pneumonia, kidney infections, and/or abdominal infections. Sepsis left untreated leads to septic shock which is associated with high mortality rates.

LSVT® BIG, an exercise treatment program offered at the Richland Hospital, is for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) based on the principle that the brain learns and changes (neuroplasticity). It has been formulated from an ex-isting program to help with speech for people with PD called the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT). Research on LSVT use over the last 15 years demonstrates improvements in speech intelligibility and voice loud-ness. LSVT BIG works on the same principle, using a single therapy focus – BIGNESS of movement.

Movement in Parkinson’s diseasePeople with PD have trouble moving normally. Their movements are usual-ly slower and smaller.

How does LSVT BIG work? The aim of the intensive LSVT BIG training is improve people’s ability to make bigger movements. These movements can then be generalized for different activities and situations. Initial results of research show that LSVT BIG training leads to:• faster walking with bigger steps• better balance• increased trunk rotation• improved quality of life

Knowing the Facts Can Change Your Life Here at The Richland Hospital, we are committed to providing excellent care to our patients. In January 2017, a committee was formed for the purpose of equipping staff and healthcare providers with the tools/education necessary for early detection and effective treatment for our patients with sepsis which has resulted in a low mortality rate of 0.02% (national average 15-30%).

The good news is that with early detection and prompt medical treatment including antibiotics, sepsis is treatable! Be aware of the signs and symptoms. If you have had an infection and show signs of sepsis, contact your doctor immediately.

SEPSIS (early stage) • Temperature > 101 F • Respirations >20 • Heart Rate >90 • Confirmed Infection

SEVERE SEPSIS (result of sepsis left untreated, organ failure)

• Confusion • Decreased urination • Extreme weakness • Abnormal heart rate • Difficulty breathing • Unconsciousness

SEPTIC SHOCK (severe stage, associated with high death rate 15-30%)

• Signs of severe sepsis above • Sudden drops in blood

pressure not improved with treatment

There are 3 progressive stages of sepsis each with its own signs and symptoms.

How is LSVT different from usual physiotherapy for PD?Traditional physiotherapy for Parkin-son’s generally aims to improve flexibil-ity, strength or balance to help actions like getting up from a chair, turning over in bed, or walking. This traditional approach breaks down each action but requires patients to remember mul-tiple instructions for each movement goal. In LSVT, patients simply focus on one goal, to think BIG!

How does it work?LSVT BIG is delivered by a specially trained occupational therapist over 16 therapy sessions (four sessions a

week for four weeks). Participants are encouraged to perform a variety of BIG movements with BIG effort in a series of specifically designed exercises. The focus on one therapy goal (BIGNESS) makes it is easier for patients to participate in this intensive program.

Taste of the Hills - June 23

The Foundation’s 4th annual Taste of the Hills event is slated from 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 23rd at Krouskop Park. This is a must see, must come event for everyone. The primary reasons for the event are to say thank you to all our donors during the previous year, and to highlight great local healthcare through the Richland Hos-pital. We want to see the whole community attend. Delicious foods from local vendors will be sold throughout the day along with

vineyard and brewery selections. This year Leahys Luck, an

Irish folk music band from Milwaukee, will be performing. Mark your calendars!

The annual First Choice Connection fund-raising event is being held at 6:30pm on Thursday, October 11 at the Phoenix Center in Richland Center. This event has packed the room ever since we started in 2006. Guests are invited by table captains or by calling the Foundation. Every year we use this event to highlight pa-tient stories as well as new Richland Hospital services and technologies. We also show-case a new video project at this event every year. This year’s video story about a local resident coming to terms with his diabetes will capture your hearts. Please call us if you would like to be a table captain this year!

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

The Richland Hospital Foundation has several plans well under way to make our 2018 journey a successful one. We hope you will participate by joining us during one of our events or supporting our mission with a generous gift.

During the first quarter of this year we will be saying goodbye to a few board members and introducing you to a few new ones. The Foundation prides itself on enlisting community members who enjoy engaging with others and who have a deep appreciation for the continued support of the Richland Hospital. We are grateful for those who come forward with their time and efforts to serve as board members. Stay tuned for an upcoming announcement by President Paul Murphey for the 2018 roster of board members and officers.

We hope you will consider a gift to the Richland Hospital Foundation this year. We are 100% dependent on your generosity to support the mission of the Richland Hospital. Be sure to read the “Ultimate Gift” story in this publication. We will continue to seek out those who not only support us annually, but are making a commitment to include us in their estate plans. We are extremely grateful for these extraordinary gifts.

The Ultimate Gift is a reoccurring feature celebrating gifts planned for or received by the Richland Hospital Foundation through estate planning.

The beauty of making an “ultimate gift” to the Richland Hospital Foundation, is that there are no rules as to how such a gift is made. Most often we think of the gift being made through a will and distributed after the donor passes away….one donor, one gift. Not so with Rev. Frank and Jean Mohr.

Frank and Jean began their legacy of giving to the Richland Hospital over 20 years ago. In 1995 the Mohr’s made the largest gift the Foundation had received to date of $52,000. The new Frank F. Mohr Therapy Center naming gift was made in memory of Frank’s father, Frank F. Mohr, who had received care at the hospital during the 1950’s. Referring to the care his family had received over the years, Rev. Mohr was quoted as saying, “This gift in memory of my father is my family’s way of saying thank you.”

Since that time, Frank and Jean have made significant annual gifts each year boosting the service of the Mohr Therapy Center, as well as supporting needed equipment for other departments. In 1999, the Mohr’s made an additional generous matching gift of $150,000 to add a 4th floor space to the west pod of the hospital. The fourth floor had not received funding during the 1998 renovation project to match the four floors on the east pod. One day while observing the lopsided view, from the parking lot, Frank asked what it would take to make it symmetrical with the east side pod. The “Matchmaker” campaign was born and matched, creating the now beautiful front view of the hospital.

Sadly, Jean Mohr passed away in the summer of 2016. During 2017, Frank decided to make yet another ultimate gift; this time in memory of his wife. The space dedicated to our Senior Life Solutions program will now bear the names of Rev. Frank and Jean Mohr. Their exceptional generosity and devotion to the wellbeing of the Richland Hospital and the patients we serve is unprecedented. We are extremely grateful that they have journeyed with us in our mission for so many years.

The Ultimate Gift

Rev. Frank & Jean MohrRev. Frank Mohr currently resides in Naples,

Florida and is the father of three children and several grandchildren.
