The Harsh Reality – Education to EmploymentAccording to a survey done by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) in 2018, 7 million Kenyans were unemployed with 1.4 million out of this figure desperately looking for jobs. The KNBS survey indicated that, in 2016, there were about 25 million Kenyans in the working-age bracket of between 15 and 64 years. Out of these, 78 per cent were economically active.

The survey further indicated that 3.7 million of the employed persons in the working age population were underemployed, meaning they were available to work for more hours but were not given the opportunity.

In view of this struggle, the Advancement and Internationalization Directorate at RU organized a one hour workshop on How to Prepare for Internships as well as Work Etiquette conducted by Deepesh Jha, A copywriter by craft. Deepesh has over 21 years’ experience as a creative in advertising. He has also worked with great Schools of Communication including Ogilvy, McCann, JWT, Lowe, Publicis and Y&R.

In these agencies he has built brands, both in India and Africa, with his work being recognised both nationally and internationally in creative award shows and in the effectiveness of advertising. He is an avid reader and browser with a keen interest in technology. This keeps him savvy in new media.

The workshop was an eye opener for most students in attendance and was a good opportunity to coach students on being ready for the Job Market.

Transformative Learning – Modern Day Teaching PedagogyRU is keen on constantly redesigning her teaching techniques and learning experience. Hello hello hello good people!

Happy new month …2019 has all of us on our toes can’t believe it’s already halfway in. Anyway lovelies…here is your dose of #javvnation. The other day a friend of mine asked me why I always get these crazy javv experiences …and it’s been on my mind since. Though I did give this corny response” I don’t look for stories they look for me!”

As I try to figure this out … Today morning I was on my AM commute route and I just couldn’t get a nduber anywhere. The rain on the other hand has zero chills yaaaani it was just bad. So now I was left with one option …. Taking a TUKTUK

Like every bad decision, I took it out of desperation. All this just trying to be on time #new year new me manenos. A yellow katuktuk stopped and I got in as the 5th passenger. Now if you have never been in one …the hustle is real in them. It’s basically a scooter type of cabbie with a car like structure. Okaaaaay that’s making it sound classy. It’s a scooter with a bench at the back.

Where was I… Aaah yes! I got in and as is the trend around here the driver rushed off. With no shame!! The level of pimping this particular one had undergone though was on its own level. First help me understand the essence of neon bulbs in this thing. And the speakers ah ah feedback is the only sound they give. At least his playlist was liit.

We had been on the road for like five minutes when suddenly there was a loud thud! Then I realized that we were on the ground. In unison, we all burst into laughter. What cracked this up even more was how like 3 bystanders came and just lifted the Tuktuk back into its right position, why was all of this funny, this thing had been tipped over by a bottle!

Then it was like a really tiny accident. I’m just here wondering how I’ll explain the grazes on my hand as coming from such a petty accident. Oh I mean a little slip. An ooops moment.

Carpe Diem!

RU Sports Desk The second semester of 2019 has been one of great achievements for all our sports teams. It began with a visit to the coastal town of Mombasa where the basket ballers travelled to honor their fixtures in the Kenya Basketball Federation Classic League. Both men and women took part in the two day event. Day 1 saw RU Bucks face Coastal Kings while the Scarlets played against KPA Youth. The Scarlets won their game while Bucks were held back by the more experienced Coastal Kings. Day 2 saw Bucks come out guns blazing to send off Baobab in what was a revenge mission after the first day’s loss. The team travelled together on SGR and stayed at the White Rhino Hotel for the two days of the event.

The icing on the cake however is the commendably good run that both teams have maintained since the start of the season. Scarlets seat top of the ladies league having won 12 out of the 14 matches played, while Bucks come second in a tie of 3 teams with 14 wins out of the 18 games played so far. The second leg which just kicked off promises to be even more exciting with the both teams expected to travel to Nakuru, Kisumu, Kakamega, Eldoret and Kisii for the away games.

RU Scarlets also made history this year by taking the St. Pauls University Open Tournament ladies basketball trophy In their first appearance ever at the event.

In Football, RUFC Mens team finished the FKF County League in fifth position out of the 20 teams that participated. The boys put up a spirited fight throughout the season that kicked of last year in December. The team has received invitation from Football Kenya Federation to join the Regional League for being one the most consistent teams.

In the backyard of things, RUFC Womens team has come off age to prove that ladies are not walkovers. In the recently concluded St. Pauls University Open Tournament, RUFC Ladies trounced older universities and colleges to come out winner of the womens football tournament. Coach Owen Makhoha attributed the win to the teams selflessness and good team chemistry developed in the last few months. With the good progress the girls are making, this will be a team to watch should they qualify to join the Kenya Universities Sports Association League, likely to kick off in September.
