From the Secretary
As we move quickly into the first third of the year, much
is being done to continue with the maintenance of the
Club premises.
The classes for young children in music and language
have begun Fridays in the Sports Hall. The Club is to
host a major fundraising event in June on behalf of the
Heart Foundation through one of our Club members.
Some new bands have been booked for the coming
months so I hope our Saturday night regulars are hap-
py to hear some new dance material.
The Committee is still seeking help in the area of bar
staff. Anyone knowing of someone who could fulfil this role, please contact my-
self or Marlene Porzig. Friday nights and Sunday evenings are the times when
we need new bar staff.
As the AGM is only a few months off, I invite members to contribute any items
for discussion through the office. There are always ongoing developments and
we welcome ideas and suggestions of how to improve and further the use of
our facilities.
I would also like to remind Club members we are a non-profit licensed Social
Club and must abide by the laws governing drinking and gaming. Any breach of
the strict rules laid out by the Department of Liquor and Gaming could have se-
rious consequences for our License.
In the meantime we are researching information on projects such as a new
fence on the north side of the premises, a drink vending machine for those
times where only a few members are present, new curtains for the Edelweiss
Hall, continuing upgrades on all electrical needs, and a host of other smaller
issues.
I am receiving very positive feedback for our new chef Rudi. His new additions
to the menu are most welcome.
Robert Schulz

MOTOWN DISCO
Motown in Myaree
We've started 2015 with three excellent nights of Motown and Soul in the Edel-
weiss Hall with the next one being Friday 10th April. Several club members at-
tended our Saturday event back in February and the feedback has been excel-
lent.
We have a regular turnout for our Soul nights with everyone saying how much
they enjoy the music and the venue. In fact, praise for the facilities provided by
the club is always positive.
Much of the music we play was popular in the 1960's and has stayed popular in
the years since it was first released, which is quite an achievement these days.
For those of you who haven't yet been along and given us a try, come and see
for yourselves and you'll probably feel your toes tapping to these fantastic, time-
less sounds, that have kept people dancing for many, many years.

Is there a wiring problem??
We have had some six weeks of non-acvity over the Christmas and New Years
break. Our regular meengs have resumed, as usual, on Fridays.
Li(le has been done so far as we promised to run trains on the RDC Open Day. As
some major ‘surgery’ has to be undertaken, it would mean that the layout would be
most una(racve with gaping holes and some trains not being able to run.
As said before this year will be one of consolidaon. The new town will have trams,
vegetaon, people and streetlights. The fairground will have the models working more
perfectly, the harbour side will look businesslike and finally, it is hoped the loco sheds
will be turned into a museum with engines making use of the working turntable.
We look forward to your connuing interest and support.

Heimat Choir
O ur Pianist Anneka DeRooij is continuing to assist us with accompanying
and directing the Choir. We are so very fortunate to have her. Anneka is
studying for her Masters Degree and will leave us at the end of April.
We then can continue with Dorothea Slawomirski, who will take on the role of
Conductor and Pianist. Dorothea was part of our choir many years ago and we
are grateful for her assistance. So the Heimat Choir can continue its love of
German Folk songs in Harmony.
On the 9th May we will be having our Sing-a-Long and will be singing new
songs. We know you will enjoy the performance so please join us. Despite dwin-
dling members, we still enjoy singing for you.
We welcome a new member to the choir—Rachel Brace. Rachel has been ac-
tive in the “Voices of Flinders” and has joined our Alto’s. We wish Rachel a hap-
py singing time with us.
On Sunday the 29th March we celebrate our 40th Anniversary in the Club with a
buffet dinner. It will be an evening of reminiscing and fun, looking back at the
beginning until today. Some of our Foundation Members are still in the choir,
which is quite an achievement.
Our Choir AGM is on Tuesday 21st April at 7:30pm so I would like to see all
choir members at this meeting. Marlene Porzig, Group Leader
T he Theatre Group is hosting this year’s Easter

WA Mandolin Orchestra
T he year’s rehearsals have commenced at a leisurely pace during the first
month in preparation for the formerly mentioned concert to be played in
Mukinbudiin. the work will intensify as the end of the March draws near and the
wheat belt bound players dust off their Akubras and Blundstone Boots.
Some Russian music has also had it’s varied tempos tried out for our May
Theme Night on Saturday 16th May at the Club. Our guest on this occasion will
be the accordionist Eddie Staszak.
We managed to fit in our monthly dinner, a catered supper and the unfortunately
essential AGM.
To the Orchestra players the mandolin is a significant part of their life, but other
Rhein-Donau club members probably find it relatively obscure. Some notes on
the mandolin’s origins and history might be informative.
The origin probably starts with the Arabian Oud, a bowl back, short necked, fret-
less instrument introduced to Europe through the Moors occupation of the Iberi-
an peninsular in the 8th century. The Oud, in combination with instruments
brought home as part of the booty during the Crusades morphed into the Lute
which was played all over Europe for many centuries.
The distinctive round back of the Lute gave rise to the name Mandola from the
Italian ‘Mandorla’ meaning almond. In the late 1500’s an early version of the
Mandola, such as the instrument our musical director (Robert Schulz) plays,
gave the name to and was the first incarnation of the modern mandolin. The
Mandola like the Lute went through many variations of numbers of strings and
tunings. Eventually smaller versions tuned approximately an octave higher
called a Mandolino (small Mandola) became the melody instrument of choice in
the mid 1700’s.
In the next issue we will continue wandering through the cobwebs of Mando-
land.

LaLeLu Perth is a multilingual music and dance school in Perth offering singing,
music and movement classes in various languages (including German) for
children age 0 to 7 years old.
We have run our German classes since our school was founded in September
2013. Our classes provide an excellent opportunity for children to have con-
tact with German language. We sing songs, play music games, learn the basic
steps to different dances from around the world and learn to play different
Orff instruments. But above all we want our students to have a lot of fun and
additionally learn German language.
Children discover rhythm, dynamics and tempo of a wide range of music gen-
res from around the world. In addition we teach our little students some sim-
ple steps and dance movements as visual interpretations of the songs they
listen to. Creative exercises and small craft projects are also part of the pro-
gram. In older groups children start learning the tonic sol-fa, music notes and
start playing at glockenspiel and recorder.
At LaLeLu Perth we also focus on classical music and composers from differ-
ent eras and countries as well as getting to know orchestral instruments.
Leading through the classical to the modern orchestral music we demonstrate
to the children how the music has developed over time. On the other hand we
cover traditional themes from different cultures as part of our program.
Beginning from End of January 2015 LaLeLu Perth will also offer classes at
Rhein-Donau Club. The classes will be in the following languages: German,
English and Spanish. For more information or to enrol, please visit
www.LaLeLu-Perth.com. Contact person: Magda 0414 738 914. Like us on
