“The Resurgence of Occupational Hygiene: Growing the Profession and Creating a Safer Global Workforce”.   As our economies continue to grow and manufacturing opportunities expand to all regions of the world, the need for skilled occupational/industrial hygiene practitioners has never been greater. Traditional manufacturing and service functions continue to be relocated from countries that have progressively improved worker health and safety by implementing health and safety regulations and deploying skilled professionals to countries that do not have strong health and safety regulations or skilled safety and health professional who can advise companies, workers and governments on how best to assess worker health and safety risk and properly protect the new workforce.   In order to sustain our global economy and the workforce that drive it, it is imperative that the global professional occupational hygiene community grow the number of qualified professionals and improve the quality of the practice of occupational hygiene in all parts of the world. For this growth to be realized we must encourage and recognize occupational hygiene education/training and intermediate level certification to develop occupational hygienist.   This presentation will discuss the need for professional occupational hygienist in developed and developing countries alike, professional societies that tend to drive the quality of the professional practice and the growth opportunities for occupational hygienist in other parts of the world, specifically countries with developing economies.

• 2.3 million people die each year as a result of work-related accidents and diseases

• 337 million suffer non-fatal workplace accidents. • 160 million new cases of occupational illnesses are

reported each year. • Compensation, health care, rehabilitation, …

equivalent to 4 % of world GDP annually for work injuries alone.

• In some developing countries, the cost can be as high as 10 % of GDP.

Resurgence of Occupational Hygiene:

“ is the science and art devoted to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of those environmental factors or stressors, arising in or from the workplace, which may cause sickness, impaired health and well-being, or significant discomfort and inefficiency among workers or among the citizens of the community.”

Classic definition of Occupational/Industrial Hygiene

• Conducts exposure and hazard assessments

• Selects controls, including PPE

• Provides communication, training and education

Presentation Notes
Core Competencies for the Practice of Industrial/Occupational Hygiene May 10, 2009 Background The Academy of Industrial Hygiene at the request of AIHA formed a working group to draft and define the core competencies underlying the practice of occupational hygiene. This was as a result of the discussions at previous IOHA, BOHS, and AIOH meetings where professionals from multinational companies have expressed the need to develop occupational hygiene programs in the developing world to control occupational health risks. The working group was comprised of representatives from AIHA, ACGIH, ABIH, and the Academy and included: Dan Anna Patricia Brogan, David Hicks Theodore Hogan Nicole Greeson Dan Lacey Perry Logan Marie Martin Gayla McCluskey Torey Nalbone Shamini Samuel Robert Wheaton Our hope is the global occupational hygiene profession can reach agreement on the appropriate set of underlying competencies so that, as the profession expands throughout the world, it will be based on a firm and consistent foundation. Please address questions to Gayla McCluskey at [email protected] and 610- 688-7110. Analytical Chemistry: laboratory analytical procedures and methods. Basic Science: apply scientific concepts general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology, physics, mathematics, and statistics. Biohazards: biological agents such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, molds, allergens, toxins, recombinant products, bloodborne pathogens, and infectious diseases . Biostatistics and Epidemiology: principles and techniques used in epidemiology - the distribution of occupationally induced diseases and physiological conditions and factors . Community Exposure: ambient air and water quality, air and water sampling, atmospheric dispersion of pollutants, health and environmental effects of air pollution. Engineering Controls/Ventilation: local exhaust ventilation, dilution ventilation, isolation, and engineering principles to control chemical, biological, and physical exposures. Ergonomics: Identify, evaluate and recommend controls to mitigate ergonomically stressful jobs. Health Risk Analysis and Hazard Communication: health risk analysis:, exposure assessment strategy. Management: acquire, allocate, and control resources to accomplish anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of workplace hazards . Noise and Hearing Loss Prevention: principles of the physics of noise and vibration Non-Engineering Controls: personal protective equipment - selection, use, care, and limitations of the equipment -use of worker rotation as an administrative control. Ionizing Radiation: physical characteristics and health and biological effects - alpha, beta, gamma, neutron and x-radiation . Nonionizing Radiation: physical characteristics, potential hazards, and health effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields, static electric and magnetic fields, lasers, radio frequencies, microwaves, ultraviolet, visible, infrared radiation and illumination.
