Transcript of The relationship between health, fitness and exercise and how they impact on performance
In order to be healthy you need to be physically fit, socially and mentally well adjusted.
If the social and mental components are lacking you could still be fit but not classed as healthy.
Fitness = physical component – body functioning
Mental = concentration, thinking things through
Social = interaction, co-operation
To improve performance people have to train even if they are healthy.

What do the following images display?
What sport needs good Flexibility?
What sport needs good Muscular Strength?
What sport is good for Muscular Endurance?
What sport is Cardiovascular Endurance good for?
Give an example of sports which would need different body compositions
Cardiovascular Fitness“A strong, healthy heart and lungs.
Cardiovascular fitness is achieved through exercises which require cardiovascular
endurance (such as aerobics, and circuit training with weights)”
Muscular Endurance“It is the ability of a single muscle or muscle
group to work for a period of time without tiring”
Improving muscular enduranceWe can improve this aspect of our fitness
by training with light weights (40 – 60% of our 1 repetition maximum). We need to do these exercises at speed with a high number of repetitions (20 –30).
Muscular Strength“It is the amount of force a single muscle or muscle group can exert against a resistance”
Improving muscular strengthWe can improve this aspect of our fitness
by training with heavy weights (80 – 100% of our 1 repetition maximum). We need to do these exercises slowly with a low number of repetitions, working through the full range of movement (6 – 12).
Flexibility“Range of movement in a joint or group of
joints. Referring to the ability of a bone joint or muscle to stretch”
Good flexibility refers to an advanced degree of limberness in the joints and muscles.
Flexibility can be improved with regular stretching exercises.
Body composition“The ratio of body fat to lean body mass (muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones, skin,
and organs)”
As a group - link the 5 health related components to specific sports
I want two sports for each component
