The CoParents Survey

CoParents undertook our own research to establish more about the relationship between sperm donors and parents to be.

A survey was created to gather and analyse results and was uploaded online between July –August 2014.

Let’s take a look at the key findings…

Respondents – Key Findings

• 53.7% of respondents were female, compared to 42.5% males, and 3.8% who preferred not to disclose their gender

• The most popular age of respondents to complete the survey were aged 42 or over (60.2%), with those aged 18-21 being the least popular (0.75%)

• 71.43% of respondents were based in England, 15% from Scotland, 6.7% from Wales and 1.5% from Canada

Females - Receiving Sperm (Part 1)

• Half of the females who have been a recipient of sperm donation have used a donor before

• The full sample of females would be comfortable using a donor again in the future

• When choosing a donor, the main characteristics recipients look for included:

Females - Receiving Sperm (Part 2)

• ¾ of women found a donor through a sperm bank, compared to a ¼ who found one via an online connection service

• ½ of the respondents said they would like the donor to be involved in the child’s upbringing

• ¾ commented that they would like to know the donor as a person

Females - Receiving Sperm (Key Findings)

Overall, females are comfortable with the process of sperm donation.Health is the top priority for recipients when choosing a suitable donor.

Traditional sperm banks are the preferred choice for women -however, they might not be aware of online connection services.

Half of recipients are keen for the donor to be involved in the child’s upbringing.

Females - Never Received Sperm (Part 1)

• 93.05% of females between the ages 22-42+ have never received a sperm donation

• Reasons for the above included:

• 70.14% of this sample feel there is no stigma attached to receiving a donation

• In contrast, 17.91% believe that there is a stigma attached

Females - Never Received Sperm (Part 2)

• 41.79% of this sample think that the donor shouldn’t have an involvement with the child’s upbringing

• 76.11% believe that recipients should request support from the donor

• 50.75% would prefer not to meet their donor if they needed sperm in the future

Females - Never Received Sperm (Key Findings)

93.05% of females aged 22-42+ have never received a sperm donation.

Only 17.91% of this sample believes that there is a stigma attached to sperm donation.

Most of this sample would not want to meet their donor if they required sperm in the future.

Males Donating Sperm (Part 1)

• The largest group to donate sperm were those aged 42+ (57.14%)

• The majority of those aged 22-42+ who have donated have done so more than once previously

• 14.29% have donated on 4-6 occasions

• 71.43% would be willing to donate again

Males Donating Sperm (Part 2)

• Half of males feel that there is no stigma attached to donating

• The majority of males would not expect to meet the recipient before donating

• The majority also stated that they shouldn’t be expected to support the mum or child

Males Donating Sperm (Key Findings)

None of the sample stated that there was a stigma attached to donating sperm.

Males who donate are willing to help others start a family.

The largest group to donate sperm were those aged 42+ (57.14%).71.43% of this sample would be willing to donate again.

A large majority feel that they shouldn’t be expected to support the mum-to-be or child.

Males Never Donated Sperm (Part 1)

• The largest group not to donate previously were also those aged 42+ (72.92%)

• Reasons for not donating included:

- 85.7% never felt the need to- 6.10% don’t agree with it

• Half of this sample would be prepared to donate if samples were low in their local area

Males Never Donated Sperm (Part 2)

• If they ever did donate, three quarters believe that they shouldn’t be involved in the child’s life

• The majority of males in this category do not have negative perceptions towards those who contribute to sperm donation

Males Never Donated Sperm (Key Findings)

The largest group to never have donated before were those aged 42+ (72.92%).

Half of those who have never donated would do so if samples were low in their local area.

Those who have never donated before feel more strongly about not being a part of the child’s life.
