BUSINESS AS USUAL ATNorth Glasgow Housing Association is changing its trading name to “ng homes”. The Association provides 5,400 homes for rent and also provides a factoring service for a further 1,400 home owners. These are the two main strands of our business. There are also two main strands to our new trading name. The “ng” represents North Glasgow: the communities that the association has served since 1976. By adding the word “homes” the association is letting everyone: tenants, owners and stakeholders know that its core business is, and always will be “homes”. Whether you rent a home from the association or whether you own your home and we provide a property management service – our core business is homes. The last 12 months have
been an exciting time for the association as we have seen some major changes, most notably the addition of 3,000 properties from GHA and 70 extra staff which saw the association more than double in size. There’s also been the new local office within Ned Donaldson House for ScotCash which is proving a great success with over £3,000 saved by local people on loan interest payments. The social enterprise setup by the association: ng2 is also really making a huge environmental impact across the North Glasgow communities with local people finding employment with the company. So although North Glasgow HA is changing its trading name to ng homes our core business aims and our vision remain, to: •provide affordable high quality homes and services.
•develop projects and partnerships to regenerate local communities•create a new North Glasgow – a great place to live, learn, work, visit and invest in.If you are a customer of North Glasgow HA you don’t have to do anything as a result of this change. We just wanted to let you know because you will start seeing the new ng homes logo around the community soon and on any correspondence from the Association.Remember, although we are changing our trading name to “ng homes” the high quality of customer service and support we have been renowned for over the past 36 years will not change. We know North Glasgow HA is a trusted name within the community, we’re proud of our heritage and values and
over the years we’ve really got to know our tenants, owners and the wider North Glasgow community. We will continue to deliver services to provide all of our customers with complete confidence, reassurance, peace of mind and satisfaction. We’ll be working hard to build awareness of our new trading name at a range of focus groups and community events over the summer. In time, we hope that you will see positive benefits as a result of our name change as we strive to provide even higher quality homes and services in the future. If you require any further information or have any queries regarding our new trading name, please do not hesitate to contact us via any of the methods outlined below to speak to a member of our team.

STRATHCLYDE Police are at present running “Operation Neptune” which is a month long campaign of action, more robust than ever and aimed at making our streets safer. Chief Inspector Tom Dickson, who is the area commander for the Maryhill and Kelvin sub-division has hailed the operation as a great success to date and he told the Re-Gen this week, “ The commitment of our officers and partner agencies during Operation Neptune have produced some terrific results for our communi-ties.” The additional focus of “Neptune” leads on from the success of operation “Mosaic” that targeted known offend-ers within the community and reduced the levels of violence and disorder in the area. “Nep-tune” is a diverse operation covering issues such as youth disorder, road safety, drugs and or-ganised crime. Over 50 focused policing operations have been carried out to date with nearly 3000 people being stopped and searched. Almost 500 of these being positive. 278 people have been reported for various offences in the sub-division since the start of the operation. This includes 51 drugs offences includ-
ing , 5 charges of housebreaking, 2 arrests under the firearms act, 8 vehicles seized and 115 Anti-social behaviour conditional offer notices issued for street drinking, urinating and disorder offences. Last weekend 4000 valium tablets were seized from an address in Maryhill, with one
person arrested for drug dealing. Another “Neptune” operation resulted in thearrest of a male un-der the immigration act who was in possession of a largequantity of counterfeit cigarettes. Chief Inspector Dickson added “ We have been listening to the resi-dents in our communities and the
operations we have carried out have been directly linked to their concerns. Our job is to help people feel secure and safe in these com-munities and robustly target those involved in disorder and violent crime. That is our priority” “Operation Neptune” continues until the end of April.

ASDA Superstore in Summerston launched their new Community Life project last week by inviting local MSP Patricia Ferguson along to cut the ribbon. Entitled “Chosen By You - Given By Us” the project involves customers choos-ing the charity or good cause that they deem worthy of receiving a monthly prize of £200-00 which can make a tremen-dous difference to the re-cipients. Events Co-ordinator June Douglas welcomed kids from local schools including, Caldercuilt Primary, St Blanes Primary, Parkview Primary, John Paul Academy, Bellcraig
Parents and Toddlers and the Bellcraig pre school children as well as Community Police officer Peter Clancy and Fire Officer Scott McFarlane, to the launch and she told the Re-Gen about this great
initiative. June said, “As customers go through the chek-outs they receive a token which they can deposit into one of three tubs at our community display. At the end of the month the tokens are tallied up and the win-ning cause will be invited along to receive a prize of £200-00 to go towards their funds. The initiative has already received rave revues from the local community as customers get involved and local groups will certainly benefit from Asda’s generos-ity. This is another example of Asda working in partner-ship with the local commu-nity for the benefit of all.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “
Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly
person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary
steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.
AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS
The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,
can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.
McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

AN attractive new piece of artwork has appeared at the entrance to the garden beside Ruchill Community Centre in Bilsland Drive. On Wednesday 28th March about 40 people gathered for the unveiling of ‘Roots of Ruchill’, a wrought iron sign decorated with sculpted metal leaves. This marks another phase in the de-velopment of the community garden. The ‘Grafters’ group from Sum-merston Daycentre designed the artwork and went to the Iron Horse studio in Balfron to help forge the leaves. Dane Redmond from Ruchill Primary School suggested the name, ‘Roots of Ruchill’, which is now the name for the garden and the commu-nity activity that grows from it. P4/5 from Ruchill Primary School and the Grafters group took
part in the unveiling. Following on from this, Ian Hart from the Barnardo’s Scottish Commit-tee presented certificates to the key participants and the children planted potatoes in the garden. The artwork would not have been possible without creative input from sculptor Elspeth Bennie and support from the
Children’s Inclusion Partnership (CHIP), Ruchill Community Coun-cil, Maryhill Housing Association and North United Communi-ties. Funding came from North Glasgow Arts Regeneration Network (NGARN) and Maryhill Housing Association. The sculp-ture is now part of NGARN’s Arts Trail.

Sizzling Suzie’s Spring Selection
Hi everyone.. Thank goodness Easter is over. A huge sigh of relief could be heard over Glasgow on Monday as all the weans were back at school. I don’t know about you but I feel all summery. Must be the longer nights. I was chatting to an Australian friend the other day and it reminded me of a really great day spent sitting in their garden being waited on hand and foot…heehee. It also reminded me of the great dishes she had made. So try out this wee taste of Australia it really is good.
Chilli Avocado PrawnsPeeled king prawns1 carrot peeled and cut into very thin matchsticks1 red onion sliced wafer thinly1 clove of garlic crushed1 tsp of crushed ginger1 or 2 fresh chillies chopped into tiny dice…discard the seeds2tbsp sweet chilli sauce1tsp oil
Fry off the onion carrot ginger and garlic in the oil for 3-4 min. Add the chilli sauce and prawns and stir quickly until prawns are cooked through. Halve the avocado s and remove skin and stone. Slice and serve with the warm prawns poured over.
Salt and Pepper Steaks1 Large steak per personSaltPepperOil for brushing
Brush a little oil over one side of the steak and season really well. Fry seasoned side down in a searing hot pan for 3-4 min. Whilst the first side is cooking brush the other with oil and again season really well. When steak is almost cooked to your liking remove from the pan onto a warm plate and cover with foil. Allow at least 4 min before slicing along the grain before serving.
Sliced creamy potatoes
Boiled potatoes 1 small tub of single cream2 tbsp of parmesan cheese
Slice the potatoes thickly in the bottom of an oven proof dish. Stir the cheese into the cream and pour over the potatoes and season well. Bake uncovered in a hot oven 190c for about 20 min until bub-bling and golden brown.
Honey Mustard salad

Combine all the ingredients into an old glass screw top jar and shake really well. Our over the salad.

Pour a little rum into a flat dish and arrange the Madeleine cakes in one layer. Pour over a little more rum and set aside in the fridge Before serving sprinkle with brown sugar and serve with vanilla ice cream.

FREE EASTER FOOTBALL FESTIVAL IS A WINNER IN NORTH GLASGOWANOTHER FREE football festival took place in North Glasgow during the Easter Holidays thanks to ng homes and Falkirk in the Community.OVER 100 youngsters aged 5-14 were delighted to receive expert coaching in technique and ball mastery as well as taking part in challenges, group and small sided games.
The free coaching took place across three camps in North Glasgow at Springburn Academy, Ashfield FC’s Saracen Park and the red ash pitch at Red Road Recreation Centre.
Kyle Higgins from Balornock attended the Springburn Academy camp. He said: “The coaches give you water bottles and other stuff, I’ve been to every one that’s been on and they are great, I can’t wait until the next one”.
Kyle’s mum Isobel said: “This is a brilliant thing that ng homes and Falkirk in the Community do for the kids during the school holidays. Kids get bored easily when they are off school so it’s good of the housing and Falkirk to put this on. Kyle absolutely loves it”
Kyle has now been singled out as a player with potential by the Falkirk coaching staff. Tom Elliot of Falkirk in the Community said: “We enjoy coming to North Glasgow and coaching the youngsters, the coaches all look forward to it and there’s quite a lot of talented youngsters in the area. Kyle is one who
caught our eye and we’ve asked him to come through to Falkirk to develop his skills.
All the players got a certificate, a drinks bottle and other goodies at the end of the event.
Margaret Layden of ng homes who supported the soccer schools went along to see the youngsters and present them with their certificates on the final
day of the week- long event. She said: “It was really pleasing to see the boys and girls of North Glasgow enjoying the free football festival and I was delighted to present them with their certificates. At North Glasgow we want to encourage local people, of all ages to get involved in sporting activities so I say a big well done to everyone that took part”.
Margaret and Jane want to work with you!TWO new staff members joined the Regeneration team of ng homes recently.
Regeneration Co-ordinator Margaret Layden will be working across
North Glasgow with local groups, schools, churches and others to develop a number of services within the community. One of the areas Margaret is working
on is environmental and volunteering programmes and she will be setting up a number of community workshops for local people to get involved in planning and taking part.
Jane Lamont, Link Up Co-ordinator, will work closely with people in the Possilpark area to develop community connections. She will be organising ‘open evenings’ for community members, activists and workers to share ideas and develop small projects.
If you want to find out more about community development work in your area then contact Margaret or Jane at either office who will be happy to meet with you.
Activate students head to Glasgow UniversityOVER the past 10 weeks local volunteers have been studying a community development course with Glasgow University within ng homes’ new training academy in Vulcan Street.
This interesting and thought provoking course has been thoroughly enjoyable to all who have taken part and they were keen to look at further study opportunities within Glasgow University.
The entire group visited the University Campus where they were involved in the community development class and some are now thinking about enrolling for study within the BA Community Development course. The group will soon be awarded their graduation certificates at a special ceremony at Glasgow University
Another Activate course
will be starting in the North Glasgow area soon and information sessions are being arranged at Vulcan Street on Tuesday 30th April between 1 - 3 p.m. - and 5 - 7 p.m. If you are interested in finding out more then come along and meet the lecturers and former students. If you want information on Activate please contact Margaret Layden on 0141 560 6000.

INTRODUCTION TO THE LOCAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2012
AS we approach the 3rd of May there still seems a bit of apathy regarding the local elections which will determine just which councillors will run our city for the next few years. How often do we hear people saying “It doesn’t really matter who is in office – They are all the same” well, believe it or not, many of the prospective candidates are standing because they have a passion for this wonderful city of ours and want the chance to make a difference. Many standing councillors have worked hard for Glasgow and many have basically been found out to be failures as far as the local community is concerned. Some use the local elections as a stepping stone to greater things and some are just happy to be councillors dealing with issues that affect both you and me. Speaking to the first time candidates the impression we get is one of hope for the future of our city and it is down to
you just who to elect to see if their thoughts and hopes come to fruition. Just in case all of you who are standing as candidates do not realise the undertaking you are about to embark on here is a reminder.
What is Required in Becoming a LOCAL Councillor?Becoming a councillor is a rewarding form of public service that puts people in a position where they can make a difference to the quality of other people’s daily lives. However, being an effective councillor requires hard work. Every day, councillors have to balance the needs and interests of their residents, voters, political parties and the council. All these groups will make legitimate demands on the councillor’s time on top of their personal responsibilities to family, workplace and friends. It is therefore important that councillors understand their role so they can
perform responsibly and effectively for the council and maintain the quality of their personal lives. The councillor’s role takes in: representing the ward, decision-making, policy and strategy, review and development, overview and scrutiny, regulatory duties and community leadership and engagement.
Representing the wardThe primary role of a councillor is to represent their ward and the people who live in it. Labour’s action plan for our part of Glasgow:
INTRODUCTION TO THE LOCAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2012
Local Elections 2012 – Your Vote Certainly Counts
covered by their council. They will be involved in decision-making through: full council, regulatory committees such as planning control or licensing, local voluntary organisation management, sitting on boards and as school governors, membership of partnership boards, being employers of staff on appointments, panels and disciplinary or grievance appeals.
Policy and strategyCouncillors influence and determine the development and review
of the council’s policy and strategy. They contribute to this through their: role in overview and scrutiny, involvement in advisory groups and partnerships, interaction with executive members, role as a representative on local community groups, role on area forums and committees, case work and membership of a political group.
Overview and scrutinyCouncillors have always been required to scrutinise the council
and the overview and scrutiny function is a natural extension of representation. The process has recently become more clearly defined and distinct and the role of councillors now includes: providing a check on the activities of the executive through call-in powers, monitoring and reviewing policy formulation and implementation, policy development, quality review, scrutiny of external bodies and agencies.Regulatory dutiesLocal authorities are not just service providers,
they also act as regulators. This involves councillors in quasi-judicial roles on special committees appointed directly by the council, such as planning and licensing committees. Most councils arrange special training for councillors undertaking these quasi-judicial responsibilities.
In these roles, councillors are required to act independently and are not subject to the party group whip.
Community leadership and engagement Community leadership is at the heart of modern
local government and councils are taking on new responsibilities for working in partnership with other organisations, including the voluntary and community sector, to improve services and the quality of life of citizens.

WHO is Rory Andrew? Rory joined North Glasgow College on the NQ Fashion Course in August 2008 and completed the HND Fashion course in June 2011.
During his time at the college he always worked hard and achieved success in every element of his course work and as a result of all his efforts he has secured a position with YSL in Paris. Read on to find out how Rory achieved his success….
In the last year of the HND programme he beat off competitors, as a late entrant in October 2010, from all over the UK to secure a place in the UK Skills Fashion Team – mainly university graduates. Six weeks later Rory and his team partner competed in the Euro Skills Fashion competition in Lisbon and won a Silver medal. He was then selected to represent the UK in the Skills Olympics, officially titled World Skills, Fashion event in London 2011. Rory achieved a Medal of Excellence for his performance in the UK Team. During the training for the Fashion Skills events Rory was supported by the college, an official training manager and Debenhams Design Headquarters in London.
Rory was the first person to represent the UK in Fashion Technology at the contest, and it opened up a wealth of opportunities for him. The first was working with Debenhams in London as part of his training for the event. Rory said, “It’s was scary being the first person to represent the UK
in Fashion Technology. It was a lot of pressure, not just for me but for Victoria (my World Skills training manager) and Debenhams, too.” Rory’s image was in a poster campaign to promote the live window display and was under a huge amount of pressure, visible to all as he designed and created in the window of Debenhams on Oxford Street.
During this period of his journey he was accessed by individuals from fashion royalty such as Ben de Lisi and Andrew Ramroop, OBE Bespoke Tailor, owner of Maurice Sedwell in Saville Row.
Rory lost no time in showing off his talents - and Scottish roots - wearing a colourful tartan suit, which he created, for a royal reception held for the team at Buckingham Palace. “I was a bit naughty really as we got told to wear a dark suit, but I thought I don’t want to do that!” Rory laughs. “If your skill is carpentry you can’t really take something you’ve made with you, but I can. I spoke to John Hayes while I was there and he said he liked it.”
Anne Wood, North Glasgow College’s head of fashion, put Rory forward for the competition. She believes his growing success will inspire others. “I’m quite sure this will give other young people in Scotland a boost and make them want to do equally well. The industry needs young role models who are doing well in an industry setting. I really do think he can go places.”
After completing his HND Fashion course at N.G.C. Rory gained employment as a pattern cutter with the Debenhams Design Team in London. 6 months later, after a “chance” meeting with the Creative
Director of Yves St. Laurent in a London vintage shop his career took him to new heights. Rory resembled a young Yves St. Laurent, and after much discussion about his success in the various skills competitions, his college studies and work with Debenhams he was asked to go to Paris for an interview. After a successful interview he was asked to join the newly formed Design Team at the YSL Paris headquarters. He is currently based in Paris working with the Creative Director and 3 others on the exclusive YSL menswear and womenswear ranges for next season – all of which are a closely guarded secret.
Rory keeps in regular contact with the tutors at North Glasgow College updating them on the skills being learned and giving staff and students an insight in to the Paris Couture
House world of fashion. He loves working at YSL and the Parisian lifestyle. He still cannot believe his own success and the journey he has had in such a short time. At this time last year he was preparing his own collection for the North Glasgow College Fashion Show – this year he is working on collections for the YSL designer shows. From NGC Springburn to YSL Paris – what a magical success story!

Hepatitis C in the SpotlightTHE North Glasgow Community Drama group have produced a very successful play that tackles the stigma and social ignorance surrounding Hepatitis C. The drama group was set up in partnership with addiction services across the North of the city and North Glasgow College. The College provided a drama tutor, Lysia Abercrombie and access to the college drama studios to produce the play, C-you, C-me, Hep C. The group is made up of individuals from communities and services in the North of the city with the main objective of using performance to highlight the issues surrounding the Hepatitis-C virus and addictions. The play was used as an educational and awareness raising tool to help reduce the stigma and social ignorance surrounding Hepatitis C in a new and novel way. The play allowed the group to provide accurate health information to front line services. North Glasgow College integrated core subjects throughout the project and group members involved in the play worked towards achieving SQA units. This included performance skills, backstage and technical skills as well as creating promotional and marketing material. The success of the project has been phenomenal, not only has it achieve acclaim from the local community, giving them an insight into many of the issues faced by individuals. It has provided the group with a powerful experience, as it gives an insight into many of the issues faced by individuals and their families in relation to Hepatitis C. For the group it was a way to share their experiences through drama and comedy, enabling them to deal with a ‘taboo’ subject in a sensitive and constructive manner.
The group performed to a full house at Partick Burgh Halls as part of GRAND week where the response was awe-inspiring. Through the sharing of real life stories - the performance had the audience laughing and crying. The play revolves around a local support group where members shared their experiences with a new member. A pregnant woman, who contracted the virus through an infected blood transfusion, a war veteran through tattooing using unsterile needles, and an ex intravenous drug user who shared his ‘needles’ with other drug users. The aims of the project were to build confidence and self esteem within the group and to enable the individuals to realise their potential through the use of words, poetry and song. Another aim was to support the group through their recovery giving them a real sense of achievement and belonging. The project has been delivered in partnership with Health, Education, Social Work departments, and Voluntary services. This has allowed the group to demonstrate the importance of service providers and service users working together to challenge the stigma of Hep C. The play has been so successful that the group have been invited to perform at the Scottish Parliament and to meet with the MSPs to raise awareness of the issues and barriers surrounding Hep C. The group are enthused by the success of the play and the way it has been received by the community and health groups and as a result they have started work on their next production. They have been nominated for some local awards for their excellent achievements.

Bob Doris, SNP MSP for Glasgow, is calling on local organisations in North Glasgow to make use of a new volunteer develop-ment grant. Now in its 30th year the Voluntary Action Fund (VAF) has announced the launch of its new Vol-unteering Development Grant of up to £10,000 for charities that wish to improve and develop their capacity to involve volunteers.Funded by the Scot-tish Government, the new grant is targeted at registered charities working within Scotland, who either do not cur-rently involve volunteers, or would like to further develop the opportunities for those that do.Further information about the grants and how to ap-ply can be found at www.vaf.org.uk or by contact-ing VAF directly. Mr Doris welcomed
the announcement and expressed his hope that local charities seize the opportunity, saying “Volunteers provide a vital resource across Scotland. Quite simply, no council or government could do without those that give up their time to help others. The organisa-tion of opportunities and activities for young peo-ple as well as assistance for our older citizens are just two examples where volunteers do essential jobs that we rely upon every day. “It is only right that our volunteers are supported and this is what the Volunteering develop-ment grant is all about. So whether a local group regularly uses volunteers or is considering using volunteers for the first time, I would encourage them to find out what the Volunteer Action Fund can do for them.”
Glasgow MSP Urges North Glasgow Charities to Bid for £10,000 Volunteer Fund
WHERE WILL YOU BE ON THURSDAY 3 MAY?WITH local council elec-tions taking place 3 May, Glasgow City Council is urging voters in the city to make sure they are ready to have their say. “Now’s the time to make sure you have rep-resentation in the council election,” said George Black, the council’s Chief Executive and Returning Officer for the election. “Make sure you are reg-istered to vote, especially if you have changed your name or moved house this year. If you are not regis-tered to vote by 18 April you will not be eligible to vote on 3 May and if you want to vote by post or proxy, rather than by go-ing to the polling station, then this is the time to sort that out too. “Residents can print off the relevant form from www.glasgow.gov.uk/elections, or call 0141 287 4444. It just takes a few minutes, but you need to act now. We don’t want
anyone to miss their chance to have a say in how Glasgow is run.” Many residents also take advantage of the numer-ous holidays in April and May and may not be at home to cast their vote. However, they can ensure their voice is still heard by applying to vote by post or by proxy. The deadline for applying for a postal vote is 18 April and the latest date to apply for a proxy vote is 25 April. Andy O’Neill, Head of the Scotland Office at the Electoral Commission, the independent elections watchdog said: “Even if you will be away on holi-day, or think you might be caught up in work you can make sure you have your say by applying to vote by post or proxy.” Forms are available from the council’s website www.glasgow.gov.uk/elections or the Elec-toral commission’s website www.aboutmyvote.co.uk

Spotlight on North GlasgowMANY people in the Glasgow North area seem to bring down the place they live in but when you really look at what’s on offer there is very little to moan about compared with other places.
Take Springburn for example, here we find a large retail outlet which includes Tesco, Lidl and Costco plus a garage almost on the door-step.
There is also a terrific College
complex and a Leisure Centre at Petershill Park plus a local Shopping Centre and even a Swimming Baths facility.
There are also fantastic housing improvements thanks to NG

Homes (formerly North Glasgow Housing Association) and a large Medical Centre.
Not only that there are many other businesses in the area which serve the local residents such as Sohal’s Indian Takeaway in Balornock Road, and of course the two Ferguson’s Pharmacies (one in Petershill Road and the other in Wallacewell Road ).
Ruchill Furniture Initiative is well known in the area going towards Maryhill and here many locals have been grateful to the place as not only is there lots to choose from the prices are excellent too.
A little further to the north we find Muldoons Garage and MOT Centre in Kirkintilloch and just next to here there are business units for sale or rent if anyone is interested in starting up in the area.
The Re-Gen hears people decrying the old place now and again, (it’s an old Glasgow Trait), but given the choice the majority of us would still live here.
Of course there are a few bad apples in the district but on the whole the vast majority of residents are real genuine people who would rather do you a favour than do you a bad turn.
Springburn is steeped in history and those who made it that way have left generations to continue the good work.
Let’s all be proud of our Roots and begin again to promote our area.

“IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”
FOLLOWING the aftermath of th
e
Football Match
between Celtic and
Rangers last S
unday there were
over 300 arrests with accid
ent and
emergency units filled to capacity
and
as usual when it a
ll calms down what is
being done about it.
The police
have been briefed and
de-briefed this week with high level
meetings being held in the run up to the
next encounter but given that their h
ands
are tied as to
what they can basica
lly
do it is up to US the general public t
o
get a grip of the situ
ation and put it on
the line that w
e will not to
lerate this
anti-social behaviour any longer.
The
problem has been with us for around
110 years and during that tim
e 2 World
Wars have been fought w
ith comrades of
opposite religions la
ying down their lives
for their co
untry. V
ictoria Crosse
s have
been awarded to heroes of both religions
yet when it c
omes down to a football
match which at the end of th
e day results
in three points being awarded to the
winning team (NOTHING MORE –
NOTHING
LESS) th
ere is mayhem and serious in
jury
meted out for ju
st being “O
NE OF TH
EM”.
Football ri
valry between teams is
normally healthy and the crazy thing is
that when, ta
ke for instance, St
. Johnstone
play Kilmarnock, th
ere are players from
different re
ligions in oppositio
n, there is
no need for 1000 police officers o
n duty in
fact the majority
of these type of games
police themselves.
Why then is i
t that w
hen the “Old Fir
m”
meet there is t
he need to have a high
alert and tension in the air fr
om early
morning till midnight and beyond? O
ne
thing is for su
re ...It Has N
othing To
Do With Football!! So what happens
now? Well fo
r a start w
e all could act
responsibly, but th
is is easier sa
id than
done. Drink is a
major factor and with
the kick-off la
st week being 12.30 many
supporters began drinking early in the
morning, whether th
ey had it in the
house from the Saturday night, o
r were
served in the MANY public houses th
at
open their back doors t
hinking they are
doing their customers a
favour. Number
One Problem..... ALCO
HOL. The majority
of supporters w
ho rush down four of five
pints, a couple of sp
irits or a bottle
of
Buckfast, in
such a short space of tim
e
then go on a supporters bus w
ith a couple
of cans or bottle
s (yes w
e know that drink
is not su
pposed to be allowed on buses,
but we all know a blind eye is t
urned),
then get caught up in the atmosphere
of the songs etc...
, is a certain recipe for
trouble. What happens th
en is that th
ey
enter the game and being surrounded
by police and ste
wards they seem to
be able to keep a lid on their e
motions
albeit some will e
ither be warned or even
arrested for minor offences.
It’s on the
road home when the drink has begun to
kick in and the hatred that they have for
each other spills
over. Now the people
we are speaking about here are NOT the
usual perceived “Thugs”,
these are
people who are run of the mill n
eighbours
and have “Friends” o
f opposite religions,
who in any other circumstances w
ould
normally do everything they could to help
anyone in need. The problem is t
hough,
that in the run up to an “O
ld Firm” game,
all the hype that has been spouted by
some of the tabloid newspapers
in an
effort to sell th
e paper basica
lly fuels
the bigotry and hatred. Just t
he slant
put on stories ca
n stir up feelings of
bigotry or perceived bigotry and even
photos which in the normal ru
n of the
week would be accepted as part o
f the
story, all o
f a sudden are construed as
being too much of one side or th
e other.
BIGOTRY, no matter w
hat shape it t
akes
is unacce
ptable and to put a spin on a
phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can
be part of it.
In a newspaper th
is is easy
to do...Take for example both teams of th
e
“Old Firm” w
in 1-0 they week before they
both meet.
Headlines proclaim Celtic
Cruise To
Victory,
Rangers Scrape Win, (
or vice
versa), such headlines are perceived as
favouring one team or the other and in
some cases as bigotry, which to normal
people sounds crazy but w
hich paper
would you take, obviously the one that
hypes up your team and seems to
bring
down the other. FOOTBALL S
ONGS and
CHANTS, many of th
ese are hilarious and
show the fun side of fo
otball but w
hen
it comes to
the “Old Fir
m” fun goes out
the window. Most o
f the songs su
ng at
“Old Firm” m
atches are now aimed at
inciting the oppositio
n by bringing the
“Irish Tro
ubles” into them and make no
mistake BOTH SIDES ARE A
S BAD AS ONE
ANOTHER. Of co
urse no one will agree
on this as each sid
e proclaims it is p
art of
their herita
ge to sing such songs.
The answer to
that is that it
is part
of EVERYONE in
the area’s herita
ge to
walk along a street on the day of a
football match and not be subjected to
the violence, bigotry or abuse that is
happening now after “Old Fir
m” games.
Families, Housewives, P
ensioners etc,
have the right to
enjoy a day of rest
without all the hassle
that accompanies
an “Old Fir
m” match.
We could rave on
and on about the negatives th
at happen
when the “Old Fir
m” meet and the cost
to every one of us for th
e policing, fo
r the
ambulances and medics needed, fo
r the
upset of our daily lives and much, much,
more, suffice to say that....
If you spotted
someone trapped in a car cr
ash or a house
fire, would you sto
p to think...”I wonder if
that person is a diffe
rent religion to me?”
before trying to save them.
If you’ve got
to think of the answer , t
hen not only do
you have major problems....”WE A
LL DO.”

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week
admitted to illegally lending money
from his home in Glenturret Street
and at other addresses in the city at
Glasgow Sheriff Court.
Colin Morrison (46) provided several
illegal cash loans to a vulnerable
couple who were forced to move home
to escape his clutches after being
charged interest which amounted to
over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and
his partner Angela Clements (who
suffers from the muscle wasting disease
Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash
from Morrison and struggled to pay the
high interest levied on the loan. Often
the couple were left to scrimp on around
£15-00 a week as the pressure became
too much to pay off the loan, forcing
them to get deeper into the mire by
borrowing from other illegal lenders
just to pay off Morrison. Two other
women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina
Close also fell under the grasp of the
Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed
money unaware that they would be
paying back extortionate rates of
interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff
Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted
the charge as the Crown accepted a plea
of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin
and a Breach of the Peace charge.
Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also
charged with lending money illegally
but her not guilty plea was accepted by
the Crown.
Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the
court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements
borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00
from Morrison and it was estimated they
had paid back around £1500 a year for
six years.
It was stated that the couple would
borrow from other lenders just to meet
the repayments on Morrison’s loans.
Eventually it became too much for the
couple and they were forced to flee their
home to escape from the money lenders
in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells
borrowed cash from Morrison around
Christmas time in 2007 and continued to
do so for the next three years.
Widow, Georgina Close (50) also
borrowed sums but always repaid them
the following week at an Interest Rate
of 30%.
When the matter was reported to
the police a warrant was issued to
search the Morrison home in the quiet,
leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and
officers found £7,230 stashed in his
wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated
that Colin Morrison had not
been employed or in receipt of
benefits during the period in
question. Sheriff Martin Jones
told the accused, “Those who
prey on the poor, weak and
vulnerable in this way will be
severely treated by the courts.”
He also stated that Morrison
had pled guilty to a very
serious charge. Sentence was
deferred until later this month
for background reports and
Morrison was released on bail. He also
faces proceedings under the proceeds of
crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”
PRIOR to being returned un-opposed
as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined
newly elected Shettleston MSP John
Mason and East End Councillors, Alison
Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and
service users at the closure threatened
Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day
care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for
the Commonwealth Games car park and
athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been
fought every step of the way by the East
Carers group, service users, families and
friends. The closure of the Accord centre
leaves the east end with just one day care
facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the
first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the
Community Health and Care Partnership
which explained that the service offered
at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands
in contrasts to the Councils current view
which is the close the Accord and not
replace the service. This is part of a wider
Council policy called Personalisation which
has seen a round of large cuts to people’s
personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson
on Social Care said of the meeting; “It
was great that the First Minister could join
carers and service users from the East End
at the Accord Centre and to give them his
support in their fight against Glasgow City
Council’s proposals to close the centre and
cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the
Commonwealth Games, the closure of
the Accord leaves just one day centre for
people with learning disabilities, and even
this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt
Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution
which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next
week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who
continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s
disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel
able to accept our invitation to meet today
when he was already in Glasgow to discuss
the Accord Centre, but the offer remains
open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this
issue as political football when they appear
to have no real understanding of what
needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least
concerned about anyone scoring political
points but what we are concerned about
is that a vulnerable group of people who
deserve much better are being passed from
pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even
long term). What we don’t want is for a group who
are dependent on stability to be messed
about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will
start going after those who don’t seem too
bothered as to where the Accord service
users are housed as long as they can say,
“We did our bit for the Party” We are
watching the outcome with interest so
please get it sorted as soon as possible.
VOLUNTEER’S WEEK THE GLASGOW EAST 5K FUN RUN & BIG DAY OOT IS BACK!
Cllr David McDonald, New MSP John Mason and First
Minister Alex Salmond pictured at the Accord Centre.
Excellent work was carried out by pw’s Shanahan and Armstrong on the 08/04/12 when they attended at Eriskey House Stobhill Hospital. On arrival they were informed that one of the patients had a polythene bag with blue tablets in his possession.
Pw’s recovered an extremely large
amount of Diazepam tablets within this bag in the male’s possession. He was cautioned and interviewed and made full admissions to selling drugs to another patient. He was charged section 5(3) MDA 71. In addition to this another patient was found to be in possession of a quantity of diazepam tablets and was charged sec 5(2) MDA 71.

Government support for police Officers assaulted
Samurai Sword Thug JailedGood work by Maryhill Response Police Officers assisted by fellow community Policing Team officers in the Maryhill area of Glasgow. Constables Muirhead and Anderson were instructed to attend a call where a male householder was hiding in the toilet of his home from 2 of his “friends” who were within, drunk and refusing to leave. The officers attended and were met by a hostile male shouting a swearing in
the background. Eventually the householder
came to the door closely pursued by another male who was waving a samurai sword above their heads. The officers promptly grabbed the householder and closed the door on the sword wielding male who was still ranting and raving within. Officers promptly summoned assistance from colleagues and the ARVs.
After a short period the decision was made to
enter the address where the accused was compliant with the officers and was apprehended. The other male who was within the address became abusive and had to be restrained due to him repeatedly trying to assault the officers. He was also apprehended.
The 2 males were detained in custody to appear at GSC. The officers recovered a number of swords and knives from the address. Great team work!
Plans to make criminals who assault police officers in the line of duty pay for their crimes have been unveiled by Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill.
The Scottish Government will also consult shortly on proposals for a victims’ surcharge, to create a fund to help the victims of crime.
Assault on police officers is an offence and is currently punishable by fines, imprisonment, a Community Payback Order or a compensation order. Between
1 Jan 2010 and 28 Feb 2012 there were 4,890 convictions on charges of assaulting a police officer.
Under the new plans, another option would be a ‘restitution order’ which would see criminals pay cash to good causes.
The police scheme could see the proceeds of restitution orders donated to charities to help injured officers back to work such as the Police Benevolent Fund and the Castlebrae treatment centre in Auchterarder. This would
see officers assaulted at work receive the very best care, to allow them to quickly return to duty.
The orders would not replace the existing arrangements for compensation direct to victims.
Ministers aim to bring forward legislation to create restitution orders and a victims’ surcharge in the forthcoming Victims and Witnesses Bill which will also contain a package or measures to support victims more generally.

ANYONE who answers the telephone in their place of work or even in the confines of their own home must surely be sick to the back teeth with the opening line of a particular call. “This is an important message about being mis-sold insurance/protection by banks.....”. Almost half the day is now being taken up with these random
telephone calls which instead of attracting your attention, just makes your blood boil. If anyone out there doesn’t realise now that there is a method of recompense available (and has been for the past year at least), then they don’t deserve any money back. To be interrupted by the constant spiel about how
you can claim money back becomes a bit of a bore now and there is no way you can get these random calls barred. Even shouting down the phone makes no difference because it is a tape and although you feel a bit daft it at least releases your feelings. So do us all a favour PPI people, PLEASE PACK IT IN!!!
PPI = (Please Pack it In)
Last Friday’s day of action in Royston produced some excellent results including, 5 arrested in connection with alleged drugs offences. A 44 yr old man arrested for alleged possession of a number of offensive weapons and alleged theft, and 84 vehicles
stopped and searched and 17 offences detected - these ranged from no seatbelt and bald tyres to no insurance, no licence and scrap metal dealing without a licence. Two vehicles were taken off the road as a result. Friday the 13th was certainly unlucky for some.

It is less than two weeks away from the local authority elections and in spite of the fact that local councils deliver the services we use on a daily basis the elections rarely get the attention they deserve from the media. Since 1999 the council elections were held together with the Scottish Parliament elections. This time it’s different and I hope this will result in more publicity for important local issues and a higher turnout of voters on May 3rd.
In Glasgow, Scottish Labour wants to continue to provide employment opportunities, creating 1,000 new jobs
a year for young people, graduates and the over 50s. To help address the housing shortage we will build 3,500 new homes for rent and help first-time buyers. We will ensure every area has an enforcement officer to tackle litter and dog fouling and campaign to regulate buses properly, something the SNP opposes.
Last year the Tory-led government cut the winter fuel payment to older people but Labour in Glasgow gave £100 to every pensioner over the age of 80 to help them with their bills – and if re-elected we will continue this each
year.Labour has already invested £550
million to rebuild or refurbish more than 100 schools and nurseries in Glasgow, and will make sure every local primary school is rebuilt or refurbished. And because we know how important affordable childcare is Labour will provide up to 5 months of additional childcare for all 3 year olds. This will be worth up to £1,500 for families and will be available from this year – not in 2014 as the SNP proposes.
From my work locally, meeting constituents, attending community
councils and local groups and organisations I know that these are the issues that matter in the communities of Maryhill & Springburn.
And as someone who believes in fairness and equality for all and who came in to politics to promote those ideals, I hope that you would vote for Scottish Labour on May 3rd. But whether you vote for Labour or for another party I would urge you to use your vote. People fought and struggled and campaigned to make sure we had the vote – please use it.
I meet frequently with a number of community groups across Glasgow.
Recently I went to both Springburn Park and Kelvindale bowling clubs. These clubs are much more than sporting venues as they provide a thriving social scene for patrons.
I recently visited the North Area Transport Association (NATA), a community transport organisation who provide affordable transport for a number of local groups.
Scottish Government Transport Minister Keith Brown joined me at their new premises to discuss future funding opportunities. Glasgow Labour recently
axed funding to NATA from the City Council and whilst it will make NATA’s job much harder they assured me they will continue to provide these vital services. Visiting these organisations reminds me that politics is all about priorities.
Over the next couple of weeks in the run-up to the council election on 3rd May we will all be giving some thought to Glasgow’s future and the public services our people need. The SNP team in Glasgow has been listening to Glaswegians – some 20,000 people surveyed so far! We have responded with a manifesto we think people will want to vote for. Glasgow needs more than kind
words. We need serious action from the City Chambers.
The SNP will maintain roads better and keep our streets cleaner through tough action on dog fouling and fly-tippers. Our council tax – frozen since the SNP came to power in Holyrood in 2007 – will remain frozen until at least 2016.
Our City Council will become far more open and accountable with a Petitions Committee to give citizens a direct say in decision-making.
We will guarantee at least 600 hours per year of flexible free nursery education for every 3 and 4 year old.
There will be a school building refurbishment programme and a new drive to raise attainment in schools. We will
guarantee every 16-24-year-old a place in education or training.
And an SNP Council will appoint a Carer’s Champion to recognise the needs of carers in the policy process and to better support carers’ organisations.
Public finances are tight and a Tory Government is making life hard for thousands of the poorest and most vulnerable people in Glasgow. But a City Council with a positive approach can work with the numerous charities and groups - like the North Area Transport Association I met the other day - who keep things ticking over and make life so much better for many of our people. Glasgow is a terrific city and a caring city. Let’s keep it that way. Let’s breathe new life into the City Chambers on 3rd May.
During the Easter Parliamentary recess, I spent time meeting local groups who are battling the effects of austerity cuts at home, but I was also fortunate enough to visit Africa for the first time, and the world’s newest country, South Sudan. I led a group of British parliamentarians on this trip where we learned about the UN programmes on agriculture, impressed upon the South Sudanese Government the need to act to improve maternal health and rates of child education, as well as peace with its neighbours in the central African region. It is one of the poorest states in the world, with huge political, economic and security problems, but among the mothers I met, growing food so they can send their families to school, a sense of optimism which is characteristic of our common humanity.
The focus at Westminster currently is on George Osborne’s Budget and the Finance Bill which
seeks to enact its proposals on changes to tax rates and allowances. Consumer confidence in Scotland has slumped to levels last seen in the depths of the 2008-9 recession, and retail sales fell in February. It’s a story being told in the empty shop fronts in Dennistoun, Springburn and elsewhere, and the lack of spare cash people have to spend, leading to a shrinking of demand in the local economy.
Osborne’s ideological choice to choke off demand through aggressive fiscal tightening has instead led to a downgrading of forecast growth to a paltry 0.8% for this year, a third downgrade of 2013’s growth forecast to only 2% from an initial 2.9% in June 2010, and a slump in forecast tax receipts for the last year of 2.7% as unemployment rockets above 2.6million.
Keynes once argued: take care of unemployment, and the deficit
takes care of itself. The stance of this Tory-led government is that the unemployed can take care of themselves, even as the wealthiest 3% receive more than a little helping hand from the state through Osborne’s largesse.
Osborne’s policy fails Scotland’s economy in four major respects. Firstly, the Budget makes zero impact on aggregate demand, and by skewing wealth and opportunity further in the hands of the top 10% rather than the bottom 40%, throws an estimated additional 10,000 people in Scotland onto the dole. As Keynes rightly concluded in the 1930s, making the poor poorer - Osborne’s position - is ludicrous economics, as well as destructive of social cohesion. In a depressed economy, with real wages predicted to fall by 7% in the next few years, and disposable incomes by 4% year-on-year – the biggest sustained drop since the 1970s – people are eroding their savings month on month to make ends meet.
Secondly, there is no plan to tackle youth unemployment. Labour’s Jobs Guarantee for the
long-term young unemployed, funded out of fair taxation of bank bonuses, would immediately help more than 4,000 young Scots into jobs, and help boost the building of 2,500 affordable homes for rent to make a start on dealing with what Shelter has called Scotland’s social housing crisis, worsened by the Tory Bedroom Tax.
Our Employers’ National Insurance Contributions holiday for small business would help create more than the pitiful 1,400 Scottish jobs under the Tories’ poor excuse of a scheme. Our temporary cut in VAT would bolster consumer confidence and get people spending again. And in Scotland, given the extent of the crisis of opportunity for young people, it was a dereliction of duty for the SNP Scottish government to make college cuts in the order of 20%, forcing more than half of colleges to scrap courses, and closing doors to talented young people in need.
Thirdly, there is no plan to reform the provision of finance to businesses starved of capital by a still-weakened financial system. A forecast gap of £190bn in required
capital for businesses will hardly be addressed by the National Loan Guarantee Scheme, which may lever in at most £20bn in existing, not new, finance.
Fourthly, there is no plan for social housing, construction or for boosting infrastructure investment. In Scotland, construction output has fallen in four consecutive quarters. The SNP made a poor situation worse by cutting capital spending too quickly in the last two years.
There are alternatives to the austerity policies which are manifestly failing in the eurozone and here at home.
A plan for new jobs and growth is the most credible way to reduce the deficit over the medium term, and repair lost tax revenues, not the destruction of demand and economic output being left to waste by the Chancellor. This is a crisis of demand made in No. 11 Downing Street and Bute House, for which governments in London and Edinburgh must assume their respective share of responsibility. It will need boldness, optimism, and new thinking from the Scottish and British Left to end it.

Giving young people the chance to work should be the main concern of every politician during these difficult times. We cannot afford to put the next generation on a jobless scrapheap. That is why I was delighted to see a “Glasgow Guarantee” announced as part of Glasgow Labour’s manifesto for the council elections on the 3rd of May.
This policy means that every 16 – 24 year old in Glasgow will be entitled to an apprenticeship, employment or training. Having this policy shows the ambition and vision that Glasgow needs to help create opportunities for our young people. Tackling youth unemployment will help the entire Glasgow economy and stop the waste of talent that unemployment causes.
Having a job is not just about earning money. The skills learnt and self esteem that come from having a job help make our communities stronger and more prosperous. That is why I am so supportive of this course of action.
Compare this action plan to the SNP’s. They have already said that winning in Glasgow would be “a stepping stone to
independence” and have not announced a single idea on how to tackle youth unemployment.
The Labour Party believes that giving young people the chance to fulfil their potential should be the number one priority at these elections.
If you would like to speak to me about this or any other issue then please do not hesitate in getting in contact with me.

Magazine SwapInstead of throwing previously-read
magazines away, I drop them off in the laundry room of my apartment building. I have noticed some people reading the magazines while waiting for their laundry to wash or to dry. Also, some people pick up the magazines they are interested in and take them away with them. The magazines get at least one more reading and, hopefully, get passed on to other readers.
Tech-free for a DayDon’t check your emails more
than once a day. Only turn on your computer when you need to. Plan your computer use ahead of time so that you can save your self time and not be a slave to technology. This will also save energy too of course. Re-use Everyday ItemsDon’t throw out anything without
asking yourself if it can be reused. I got this mentality from backpacking, where you have very few resources to work with. Lots of food packaging like plastic bags, if opened carefully, can be reused for something else.
Seek out no-waste packaging I look for products with recyclable packaging. I avoid tetrapak, styrofoam and unnecessary bags. I don’t buy products in clamshell packing unless I absolutely have to. Making those choices means less waste, and fewer garbage bags too. It’s a ripple effect.
Cut and ReuseCut old shirts and use them as wash
cloths in the kitchen and bathroom, etc.
At the Car WashInstead of using a hose, which
wastes a lot of water when washing the car, I just use two buckets of water. One bucket with car wash soap solution, and one bucket with clean water for rinsing.
Get Crafty!“I recycle my birthday cards by
using them as bookmarks or for scrapbooking.
No Dryer NeededBefore taking the clothes out of
washing machine, I run the last spin cycle one or two more times to wring out all possible water. It seems to me the electricity used to spin the washing machine drum would be far less than what would be needed to heat and evaporate water in the dryer. Get washing out on the green as much as possible .

Playbusters were delighted to announce that they have been awarded £449,662 for their environmental projects in the same week that they hosted the Grow Green awards. The funding comes from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund and covers their Grow Green with Glasgow’s East End programme for the next three years. The project will continue the exciting work of the last two years, addressing issues of climate change across
the East End of Glasgow with leadership from young people and volunteers. Through local food growing, energy saving, recycling and re-use, they are establishing a change in culture towards climate change and creating a sustainable future for the community. The news came the day before Playbusters hosted the Grow Green Awards at the Winter Gardens in Glasgow Green. The big winner on the night was Glasgow Bike Station who picked up the overall Grow Green Award as well as the sustainable transport award for promoting cycling across the city. The sustainable school award went to Eastbank Primary School who have grown their own food, reinstated a pond and were the first school in Glasgow to achieve a fourth green flag. The waste reduction and reuse award went to the volunteer team at Simply Swap who said “I think it’s absolutely terrific that we won the Grow Green Award. I never thought I’d be involved with something like this and it’s just great to see how Simply Swap has progressed from day one to where it is now and we can hopefully build on this further”. Two awards went to the North East of the city with North Glasgow Community Food Initiative picking up the sustainable food award and North Glasgow Housing Association collecting the sustainable business award.
Jeremy Laycock, Senior Climate Challenge Officer at Playbusters said:“Continued support from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund
shows that the work we are doing fits well with their ongoing aims in terms of tackling climate change in the years ahead. “The continued funding recognises the success we have had in engaging the community in our work and in particular, with involving volunteers in all stages of our project. It allows us to build on the last two year’s work which has included running cycling clubs, helping people to reduce their energy bills and learn about growing their own food. We have also set up a number of community gardens, including Crownpoint Community Garden, where we have worked with a wide range of partners to deliver a beautiful garden that will be a real resource for the community. “We are determined to change people’s attitudes and we believe that we have been doing just that, particularly with our fashion swap shop – Simply Swap – which has been hugely successful at changing the way that people view ‘waste’ and helping to take away the stigma attached to second hand items.“We will take advantage of the Junior Climate Challenge Fund to expand the Grow Green programme’s youth activities; including ‘low carbon lifestyle’ training for young people, regular cycling clubs and further developing our successful toy swaps. “The Grow Green Awards are crucial in our programme and we are very much looking forward to celebrating the achievements of all our nominees. Playbusters are keen to get as many people as possible involved in the project so give them a call on 0141 551 0071 to find out more.

BOTH Glasgow Teams deserve an enormous amount of credit for their performances this Season with Petershill challenging for the Title and the `field consolidating in their first Season in the Top League.
Sunny Conditions & a chilly wind welcomed both teams to the New Petershill Park with a 250 plus Crowd already taking their place in this new Stadium. Ashfield suffered a couple of injury blows to their line up before Kick-Off with Andy Brand & Jim Smith out through injury & 13 Goal Chris Hall unavailable for selection and it was the home side that took the game to Ashfield straight from the Kick-Off.
The `field were a bit frustrated with the Referee`s early decisions and to add to their woes, Petershill opened the scoring in the 12th Minute.
A foul was conceded on the left hand side of the box and a wicked Free-Kick was met by the Petershill Captain Ryan Jordan who bulleted a header high past Anton Nugent
in the `field goal to put Petershill 1-0 up. Petershill 1 Ashfield 0. The home side were looking lively at this stage and Ashfield had to dig deep to contain the `hill however as the half wore on Ashfield came in more & more into the Match. On the half hour mark the `field almost pulled level.
Shaun Fraser was brought down 25 yards out and Mark Thomson`s Free-Kick crashed off the underside of the bar and was eventually cleared to safety. There were some committed challenges towards the end of the half however Referee Don Robertson kept a lid on things.
As the half was brought to an end the Crowd knew that it was going to be a very interesting Second Half indeed.
HALF TIME:- PETERSHILL 1 ASHFIELD 0
It was the `field`s turn to start the half in good form and from the Kick-Off made their intentions known as they put the `hill on the back foot. Despite having the bulk of the play, the `field were

restricted to long shots as the `hill back four were in a mean mood.
As the the `field poured forward it was Petershill that almost increased their lead on the break. when a low shot went narrowly past Nugent`s post.
Ashfield had a couple of chances
from Free-Kick`s which were taken by Mark Thomson, the first going narrowly over and the second was saved by McNeil.
Paul Maxwell was next to test McNeil with a downward header before Shaun Fraser drove low and hard which McNeil put past the post. With 20 Minutes to & Ashfield squandered a big chance to equalise after a lovely sweeping move.
Shaun Fraser broke free on the right hand side of the box and his deftly delivered cross was met by Paul Maxwell, however the big Ashfield striker missed the post by inches from inside the 6 yard box.
`Maxi` did not let this affect him and with the time running out for the `field he picked up the ball just inside the box and after weaving past a couple of defenders
was brought down with Referee Robertson having no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Mark Thomson stepped up and drilled in his 21st Goal of the Season sending McNeil the wrong way to the delight of the Ashfield support. Petershill 1 Ashfield 1. Ashfield had their tails up and went for the winner however the `hill defence stood resolute as the Referee brought proceedings to an end. Petershill will now be hoping that Ashfield take something from their two games coming up with Irvine Meadow starting with next week`s clash at Saracen Park (21/4/12).
Teams:- Petershill - McNeil, Barr, Palmer, McCabe, Jordan (Capt), Maxwell, Finnigan, Dickson, McGladrigan, Murch & Burke. Subs - McLaughlin, Girvan, McArdle, Woods, Moore & Black (gk).

Man of the Match:- A very good Second Half performance from the `field with special mentions to the whole back four, Paul Maxwell & Shaun Fraser however as in recent Matches, Mark Thomson produced a Captain`s display, firstly being denied by the underside of the bar before despatching a late penalty for his 21st Goal of the Season.

Joe Heading for Malawi(With a Little help from his Friends)JOSEPH Brannan, Active Schools Coordinator at Springburn Academy has been selected to participate in the first group of Malawi Leaders of Learning who will travel to Malawi in June of this year. The purpose is to support a range of learning and teaching developments within Malawi schools through the Malawi Leaders of Learning programme. To participate in this programme Joe has to raise a minimum of £3000.Over the last couple of months Joe has been organising events to try and raise the required sum and on Thursday 10th May a football match has been organised at Ashfield Stadium. Former football players; Andy McLaren, Charlie Miller and Jose Quintongo along with Paul Weir and Willie Limond both former World Boxing Champions as well as
active schools coordinators colleagues, local school teachers, community workers and some local people will take to the field to provide an entertaining match with a 6.30pm kick off. Joe commented that the match will provide an opportunity for local people to view some entertaining football and see some of sports former ambassadors take to the field. As well as the football match local senior pupils from Springburn Academy and All Saints will participate in a half time quickest goal from the half way line competition. Admission is £2 for children £3 adults and this will contribute to Joe’s fund raising. When over in Malawi Joe will be working in primary schools where school roles are extremely high and children attend school encouraged by
the thought of receiving a free bowl of porridge each day. Classes can be as high as one hundred and fifty pupils per class and children are taught in many instances in class rooms without desks and books or outside in the school grounds. Joe who reformed Partick Amateur Boxing Club based at John Paul Academy in Summerston several years ago expects to find living conditions tough during his five week stay in Malawi but is looking forward to the challenge of working in schools with such high school roles and very limited resources. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so be contacting Joe at Springburn Academy and hopefully there will be a big turn out on 10th May to support this worthwhile cause.
