It plays a key role in counseling and guiding the students for their triumphant career placement. On 03.08.2015 & 06.08.2015 Indian Instute of Banking was invited to conduct Skill Development Programme-II on soſt skills, effecve communicaon techniques and problem solving skills. Bridge Course In order to build confidenal language bridge for the freshers, the department of English organized a Bridge Course for all the first year UG students for one week at the beginning of the course. This inducon programme bridges the gap between school and college educaon. This brief course helps the students to improve their experse in the English language. It facilitates the students to acclimaze themselves with the new environs. A course book tled A Step Ahead: Reinforcing English for Under Graduates is designed by the members of the department in such a way that it gives confidence to students to communicate effecvely in English. It contains exercises, word games, figures of speech, common errors in the usage of English, translaon, English for general applicaon like English and its usage in everyday life. The book is updated and necessary changes are incorporated on the basis of students’ feedback and the needs of the day. The students, especially from the vernacular medium benefit in being able to beer understand the lectures which are in English. The leading objecve of this book is to make the students use the English language in a praccal way and to edify essenal values of life. This book presents grammacal facts as simple as possible and guides the students to incorporate them systemacally, and to do away with puzzling hitches as far as possible.

International Yoga Day

The Associate NCC Officer Dr. (Sub Lieutenant) V. Robin Perinba Smith was deputed by the Unit [3 (TN) Naval Unit NCC] as officer-in-charge for coordinating International Yoga Day to enter into Guinness Book of Records on 21st June 2015 . The NCC Cadets from all the Schools and Colleges of Kanyakumari district participated in the World Yoga Day conducted for 35 minutes at Ponjesly College of Engineering, Nagercoil.

Forty students from B.Sc. Computer Science & BCA were sent for an Off Campus Interview at TCS Chennai on 19.08.2015.

On 03.08.2015 & 06.08.2015 Indian Institute of Banking was invited to conduct Skill Development Programme-II on soft skills, effective communication techniques and problem solving skills.

A campus drive was organized by TVS Training & Services, ICICI Banks, HDFC Bank and Birla Sun Life on 01.09.2015. 78 members from the district participated and 8 members got selected.

From the Principal’s Desk…Having in mind the dynamics which the world is progressing with, Scott Christian College (Autonomous) is also renovating itself. The teaching and research laboratories are constantly amplified and improved. Students’ placement has receptively improved during the present season, but we are dogged to achieve better. A conducive environment and eco consciousness is the need of the day. I urge upon my dear students and colleagues to apply mind so that a green, clean and benign environment is guaranteed for the upcoming generation. Emeritus Professors

Youth Red Cross, Scott Christian College Unit), Dr. B. Christudhas Williams, (YRC Joint District Organizer), Dr. Joseph Robin, Mr. Smith, Adv. M. Ahmed Khan, Chairman, Dr. K.C. Mohan, Secretary, Indian Red Cross Kanyakumari District Branch inaugurated the rally.

l A programme on health awareness was organized on 16th September 2015. Mr. Kingston, Endamologist, Department of Public Health, Nagercoil, insisted on the importance of health and hygiene.

l Youth awakening day was celebrated on 15th October 2015. Mr. D. Arun Gladwin gave a special talk for the young minds

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council advocated the establishment of Internal Quality assurance Cell (IQAC) in all the accredited institutions as a post accreditation quality sustenance activity. The primary aim of the IQAC is to develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic action and to improve the academic and administrative performance of the institution. For the continuance and the effective function of IQAC, Dr. A. Moses Ezhil Raj was appointed as co-ordinator of IQAC from May 2015.

For optimization and integration of modern methods of teaching, learning and evaluation, three smart boards have been added in addition to the existing teaching aids. In order to widen the usage of the modern teaching aids, a demonstration on “Usage of smart board” was given to all faculty members on 11th June 2015. Dr. C. James, Associate Professor of Physics and Assistant Controller of Examination gave the hands on training for the efficient usage of smart boards.

Outstanding Achievements of our Students

We believe that the faculty-student interaction fosters intellectual growth among our students. We are proud of our students’ many accomplishments. IQAC applauds all the students who have brought laurels to the college.

l The department of Youth Red Cross and NSS Units jointly organized a Blood Donation Camp on 01-10-2015 at Scott Christian College. Dr. Mary Jesy Roach IRCS KKDB Chairman presided the meeting. The Chief Guest address was delivered by the District Collector Thiru. Sajjansingh R. Chavan. Dr. M. Edwin Gnanadhas, Principal, Dr. K.C. Mohan and Dr. Sastha felicitated the meeting. Dr. B. Christudhas Williams, YRC Joint District Organizer, delivered the vote of thanks. Around 80 volunteers participated in the camp and 21 blood donors donated blood to the Thuckalai Government Medical Hospital.

l The Youth Red Cross unit, the NSS Units of Scott Christian College (Autonomous) and the Nagercoil Municipality jointly organized a Plastic Awareness Rally on 07-10-2015 from Scott Christian College to the Collectorate. Mr. Simon Raj, Vice-Chairman Nagercoil Municipality flagged off the rally. Dr. M. Edwin Gnanadhas, Principal, Scott Christian College, Dr. V. Ranjan, NSS Programme Officer Dr. V. Robin Perinba Smith, Naval Nodal Officer, Dr. B. Christudhas Williams, The Primary Health Centre Staffs, Municipal Councilors, YRC Joint District Organizer, and more than 300 NSS and YRC Volunteers participated in the rally.

National Service Scheme (NSS) [7 Units]

l The activities of all the seven units for the academic year 2015-2016 began with the inaugural function held on 20th June. Dr. T.M. Padmanabhan, Associate Professor of Commerce, S.T. Hindu College, Nagercoil delivered the inaugural address.

l A drug awareness rally was held on 28th August 2015. The rally started from Scott Christian College and reached SLB Higher Secondary School, Nagercoil.

Sports Achievements

IQAC feels proud of our students’ excellent sporting achievements at all levels. Congratulations to all the students who brought fame to the college by winning the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Overall Championship Runners-up Title for the third time.

International Level Sports

International Chess Master, P. Shyaam Nikhil of M.Phil Economics has won the Fourth place in International Chess Tournament held at Kolalampur, Malaysia in September 2015.

National Level

C.S. Nigesh of II BBM won the gold medal in boat pulling (Position: third man) at the All India Nausainik Camp, Karwar held from 16th to 27th October 2015.

District level Sports

l N. Prasanth, II B.Com. won the gold medal in Yoga and the silver medal in boat pulling at the Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC – II) held from 04 to 14th June 2015 at Scott Christian College (Autonomous), Nagercoil. He also won the gold medal in boat pulling (Position: Bowman) at the Nausainik Inter Unit Competition held from 1st to 10th September 2015 at the NCC Group Head Quarters Puduchery.

l The Kabaddi team won the First Place in the Vavubali tournament held at Kuzhithurai in August 2015.

l The Table Tennis team won the First Place in the Chief Minister’s Trophy Table Tennis Tournament held at Nagercoil in September 2015.

Activities of NCC

TSC-TRG-1 CAMP

TSC-TRG-1 CAMP was held at Yadava College, Madurai from 5th June 2015 to 14th June 2015. Two students participated in it.

CATC-CAMP

The Combined Annual Training Camp was held at Ponjesly College, Nagercoil from 13th June 2015 to 22nd June 2015. Twenty seven cadets took part in it.

CATC CUM TSC TRG-2

The Combined Annual Training Camp CUM Tal Sainik Camp Boys & Girls [CATC CUM TSC (B) & (G) TRG- TRG-2] was held at Kalasalingam University, Krishnan Kovil from 21st June 2015 to 3rd July 2015. Two students attended the camp.

CATC-CUM-IUC-RDC

CATC CUM IUC FOR RDC was held at Ponjesly College of Engineering from 27th July 2015 to 05th August 2015. Seventeen cadets took part in it.

NCC-DTE-TRG-1-TSC

The Directorate training 1 Tal Sainik Camp was held at St. John’s College Hostel, Palayamkottai from 5th August 2015 to 14th August 2015. Two cadets attended the camp.

DTE-TRG-2-TSC

Two cadets attended the Directorate training 2 TAL SAINIK CAMP held at Annammal College of Education, Thoothkudi from 16th August 2015 to 25th August 2015.

TRG-1-GP-RDC

The group training 1 REPUBLIC DAY CAMP was held at the Police Training Center, Thoothukudi from 26th August 2015 to 4th September 2015. Two cadets attended the camp.

TSC-LAUNCH CAMP-1

B. Barunsha took part in the launch -1&2 TAL SAINIK CAMP held at Yadava College, Madurai from 7th September 2015 to 16th September 2015 and 18th September 2015 to 29th September 2015 respectively.

Youth Welfare Department

l The youth welfare committee aims at providing opportunities to students where they can discover their hidden talents and it does provide a platform for them to develop these talents. A talent show was conducted from 31st July to 8th August with fifty different competitions. These were interdepartmental and students from all departments participated in it. The department of English won the overall trophy.

l Fabric painting classes were conducted in collaboration with Fevicol and around 35 students were trained to do different paint works in clothes.

l Scott Fest 2016 was conducted in the college. Nine colleges participated and the overall trophy was won by Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthandam.

Rotaract Club

l The activities of the club began formally with the installation of Rtr. N. Sam Golden of II B.A. English as the President on 6th August, 2015 by Rtn. Sylvester. Rtn. PP. A. Bari administered the oath. Mrs. Cecilia Jeyaraj (Retd. Headmistress), was the Chief guest. Rtn. PHF. Jacintha Dharma, offered her felicitations.

l The club visited Shanthi Nilayam, the school for the mentally retarded, at Paruthivilai on 14th October, 2015. The inmates were entertained by the rotaractors for about an hour and they in turn entertained the rotaractors. Sweets were distributed to the inmates. A sum of Rs. 5000/- was gifted to the school.

l The hospital expenses of a former student who visits CMC, Vellore at regular intervals for treatment of a chronic disease is being met by the club by raising funds through well-wishers. The amount thus raised comes to Rs. 15,000/-.

Scott Revival Team

Scott Revival Team started its journey in Jesus as a small prayer cell. On 1st October 2015 the first meeting was conducted. Rev. J. Prakash Nayagam presided over the meeting. Dr. P. Charles, Vice Principal felicitated the gathering. Dr. Suganth Ryleson Daniel gave the Lord’s message. About 500 students attended the meeting.

Vibrant Departments

All the departments linger vivacious providing abundant options for higher education by organizing various seminars, conferences, workshops and guest lectures. Efforts are on to endeavour advance in the world of academia so that the college can carve a memorable alcove in different arenas.

National Seminars/Conferences

A National conference on Innovations in Chemical Sciences and Technology was jointly organized by the Department of Chemistry & Research Centre, Scott Christian College and GIAP Journals, Mumbai in association with Association of Chemistry Teachers, Mumbai on 21st August 2015. The head of the department of Chemistry Dr. Rashi welcomed the gathering. The Principal Dr. M. Edwin Gnanadas delivered the Presidential address. Dr.Nagarajan Deputy Manager, ISRO, Mahendrgiri gave the inaugural address. Dr.G.Ramkrishna delivered the key note address. Dr.AnshuDandia, Vice-President of Indian Chemical Society, Dr T.K Tandon, Allahabad University were the invited speakers. Dr. Malar Retna and Dr. Priy Brat Dwivedi, were the Conveners. About sixty papers were presented by various researchers from Kerala, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

l The department of Computer Science organized a one day national level technical symposium COM TRACK 2K15 on 9th October 2015.Dr. N.Shaji, Professor of Information Technology, N.I. University gave a talk on ‘Security in Cyberspace’. Dr. Seldev Christopher Senior Professor and PG coordinator, Department of CSE, St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering delivered the valedictory address. Nearly 250 students from various colleges of Tamil Nadu and Kerala were benefited.

l The fourth Prof. A. James Endowment Lecture jointly organized by the Department of Physics & Research Centre and Scott Alumni Association (SAA) was conducted on 7th August 2015 with nearly 100 participants. Dr. M. of Enggineering and Technology, Kumarapuram, Thoppur inaugurated the function and Dr. E. James R. Daniel, Formerly Principal, Scott Christian College (Autonomous) & Secretary, SAA introduced the Endowment Lecture. The lecture was given by Dr. R. Ganapathi Raman, Assistant Director (Research), Noorul Islam University, Kumarakovil, under the topics “Characterization of NLO Crystals” and “Recent Advances in Physics”.

l E. James R. Daniel Endowment Sixth Inter-Collegiate Seminar jointly organized by the Department of Physics & Research Centre and Scott Alumni Association (SAA) held on 21st August 2015 was inaugurated by Adv. M. Joseph Raj, Correspondent-Secretary, Scott Christian College (Autonomous). The keynote address and the lecture under the topic “Emerging Technologies: A Global Scenario” was given by Er. Ambrose Rajendram, Master Technologist, Hewlett Packard R&D, Bengaluru. A Science fair was conducted by the IInd PG students accompanied by Dr. C. James, Asso. Prof., Department of Physics & Research, Scott Christian College (Autonomous) and Ms. S. Sharmila Juliet, Asst. Prof., Department of Physics & Research, Scott Christian College (Autonomous) in the Govt. High School, Parvathipuram. They stimulated the science mind of the school students by conducting games, quiz and demonstrations.

l E. James R. Daniel Endowment Seventh Inter-Collegiate Seminar & JRD Physics Quiz 2014-2015, jointly organized by the Department of Physics & Research Centre and Scott Alumni Association (SAA) was held on 29th September 2015. Mr. S. Balasundar, Senior Scientific Officer, Radiological Safety Division, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam a the lecture under the topic “Nuclear Energy; Need Safety and Applications”. In the Inter-Collegiate JRD Physics Quiz contest-2014-2015, the 1st PG students of the Department of Physics & Research, Scott Christian College (Autonomous) won the first prize and the IInd PG students of Department of Physics & Research, Scott Christian College (Autonomous) won the second prize.

l The Fifth K. Ganapathia Pillai Endowment: One Day Seminar jointly organized by the Scott Alumni

Association (SAA) and the Department of Zoology and Research Centre was held on 05.10.2015 in the SAA Seminar Hall. Er. M. P. Pillai, Formerly Deputy General Manager of ISRO introduced the Endowment. Dr. M. Edwin Gnanadhas, Principal of Scott Christian College gave the Presidential Address. The Managing Partner of Sree Ganapathy Motors and Sponsor of the Endowment, Mr.G. Viswanathan felicitated the gathering. Dr.A.P.Lipon, Formerly Principal Scientist, CMFRI gave the Keynote Address and Endowment Lecture on the theme ‘Fish diseases and management.’ Students from III UG Zoology, I and II PG Zoology,Pre-Doctoral and Doctoral research Scholars participated and benefited from the Lecture. The afternoon session of Paper reading was chaired by Dr. R. D. Stevens Jones, Associate Professor of Zoology. Two papers were presented, one by Dr. S. Kiruba, Formerly Research Scholar of the Department of Zoology on ‘The Ecological and Economic importance of Hexapodan pollinators’. The second paper was on ‘The effect of space on the feeding efficiency of Dragonfly Nymphs’ by Dr. R. AvilaVarshini, Project Fellow, Department of Zoology. Students from III UG Zoology, I and II PG Zoology,Pre-Doctoral and Doctoral research Scholars participated and benefited from the Lecture.

l The Sixth Prof. J. M. Arthur Endowment Lecture was held on 6th October 2015. The Endowment lecture was given by Dr. John Prince, Associate Professor, V.O. Chithambaram College, Thoothukkudi, under the theme “Earth Observation Satellites and Applications”.

l A Seminar on Personality Development was organised by the department of English on 14-07-2016 for the UG students. Er. Arun Gladwin served as the resource person.

l A Workshop on Thesis Writing and Research Methodology was organised by the department of English on20-08-2015. Dr. Premalatha Dinakarlal, HoD Holy Cross College, Nagercoil and Dr. Jeya Sunderaj, St. John’s College Tirunelveli delivered a talk on how to write a good thesis. The PG and M.Phil students were benefitted.

l A special programme on motivation and counseling for UG and PG students was organized on

24-06-2015 in the Zoology department library and PG lab respectively. Fr. Britto, Head Master of St. Michael Higher Secondary School, Kallidaikurichi gave an inspiring talk on Personality and Positive Approach to the UG students. Fr. Amalan, Superior and Correspondent, St. Josephs Higher Secondary School, Keelamudimain, Tuticorin counseled the PG students on “The importance of Life and Leading Life Positively”.

l A talk on medicinal Plants and their importance was delivered by Dr. Richard Kennedy, Agriculture Officer Horticulture Department, Pechipari on 06-07-2015. The UG Chemistry students were benefited by it.

l On 27-07-2015, the 139th birthday of Kavimani was celebrated by the department of Tamil in the centenary auditorium. Mr. Manivanan IPS was the resource person of the day and he delivered a special lecture. In the afternoon session Mr.Sahul Hameed gave a special talk.

l A one day seminar on Personality Development was conducted on 04-08-2015 by Dr. N. Pradesh Kumar, Department of School of Management, N.I.University. Prof. S. Gnana Sophia organized the seminar.

l A talk on Physiological Processes of our Body and the Toxicity of Chemicals in the Food Which We Intake was delivered by Dr Sathick (Acupuncture) on 06-08-2016. The PG Chemistry students were benefited by it.

l A one day workshop on Biostatistics in Biology Research was held on 19-08-2016. Dr. Anand Jeya Kumar Austin, Assistant professor, Department of Marine Biology, Faculty of Marine Sciences, King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia served as the Resource person. Pre- Doctoral and Doctoral Research Scholars of the Department of Zoology and Botany participated in the workshop.

l In view of Wild Life Week (Oct 2nd – 8th) celebrations, the Department of Zoology organized several competitions (Essay writing, Verse writing, Poster making and Animal craft) for the UG and PG students of all departments of the college to create awareness among students about the importance of wild life and forests. Mr. J. Sudhahar Ambrose Rtd. IFS gave a talk on ‘Man – Wildlife Conflict’.

l A one day Seminar on “Motivational cum subjective seminar of CSIR NET: MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES” was organized by the Department of Mathematics on 07-10-2015. Dr. S. Saranya, Director, SS Academy for CSIR Mathematics was the resource person.

Resource Persons

l Dr. C. James, Asso. Professor of Physics and Asst. Controller of Physics, gave an invited talk on “Question Paper Setting” at Fatima Mata National College (Autonomous), Kollam, Kerala on 30th September 2015.

l Dr. R. Leena, Asst. Professor of Zoology gave a talk on “Biology and Technology for Mitigation of Environmental Pollution” organized by the PG Department of Zoology, Vivekananda College, Agasteeswaram.

Academics

The academic work of the odd semester for the year 2015-2016 began with the reopening of II and III year Undergraduate and II year Postgraduate classes on 18.06.2015. The first year Undergraduate classes commenced on 20.06.2015. The fresh batch of first year Postgraduate classes started on 17.07.2015. The current pre-doctoral candidates started their academic course on 20.07.2015.

From the Editorial Desk…Greetings and a warm welcome to our 9th issue

In this academic year we have set out half the voyage and it is time to reflect on what we have attained. This issue is presenting a glimpse of the college on many fronts like academic, alumni, student council activities, placement drives, extracurricular and co-curricular activities in a nutshell.
