It is a joy and pure pleasure to have such students as part of the Glenwood High School community. Special thanks to Mrs Powell, Mr Lewers and Ms Levett for nurturing these wonderful students and their particular projects. Year 12’s Final Weeks This term has been an extremely busy time for Year 12, and their teachers, and no doubt a stressful time for parents. They have completed the HSC Trial examinations and the subjects – English Extension 2; History Extension; Fashion Design; Industrial Technology – Graphics, Metal and Timber; Engineering Studies; Design and Technology; Visual Arts; Dance; Drama; and Music - have been busily finishing major projects and performances for examination by itinerant HSC markers. The quality of these projects and performances has been outstanding and I applaud the students and teachers for their unrelenting focus on excellence. Once the Trials, projects and performances are complete many students make the mistake of thinking their work at school is done. However, the last few weeks are vital to their ultimate success. Although some courses may have completed delivery of the content it is imperative students are at school every day to use this time to prepare themselves thoroughly for the external exams in October. Now is the time to carefully reflect on what they need to do to improve upon the Trial results by asking teachers and getting detailed feedback on exam performance as well as using class time to practise exam technique until it becomes second nature. ‘Fame’ The Musical To that end, all Year 12 students are expected to be in attendance every day until the graduation ceremony scheduled for Friday 23rd September, 2011, at 9.30am. For those of you lucky enough to be in the audience I am sure you will agree it was an outstanding success. A number of VIP invited guests came along on the Friday evening and they were suitably impressed with the quality of the singing, dancing and acting. The students and teachers involved have set a very high standard for future musical productions and in one short year have generated a tradition of enthusiasm and strong student participation in such events. Deputy Director General and Regional Director Visit Glenwood High School

On Friday 2nd September, 2011 we had the honour of a visit from Mr Greg Prior, Deputy Director General, Department of Education and Communities and Mr David Phipps, Regional Director, Western Sydney Region. Year 12’s Final Weeks

This term has been an extremely busy time for Year 12, and their teachers, and no doubt a stressful time for parents. Now is the time to carefully reflect on what they need to do to improve upon the Trial results by asking teachers and getting detailed feedback on exam performance as well as using class time to practise exam technique until it becomes second nature.

‘Fame’ The Musical

To that end, all Year 12 students are expected to be in attendance every day until the graduation ceremony scheduled for Friday 23rd September, 2011, at 9.30am.

Glenwood High School’s very first musical was held on Wednesday 24th August, 2011, Thursday 25th August, 2011 and Friday 26th August, 2011 at 7.30 pm in the School Auditorium. For those of you lucky enough to be in the audience I am sure you will agree it was an outstanding success. Year 12:

Year 12 have sat for their Trial HSC Examinations and are approaching the final step in their schooling – the HSC. Some students undergoing patterns of learning that contain subjects with practical components have already completed parts of their HSC examination. HSC examiners of practical subjects have been present in the school over the past few weeks to mark Dance, Drama, Music, Textiles, Timber Metal, Design Technology and Visual Arts major works. Some very impressive works were submitted and outstanding pieces performed. Well done to all of those students. However remember it is not all over yet. Leading up to the end of term and the HSC, students should be accessing the Board of Studies Web site for valuable resources and past papers to assist in studying. They should be consolidating their notes revising and sustaining a study regime. REMEBER...... IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO IMPROVE RESULTS!!

Year 11 Preliminary:

Year 11 are doing their final exams for the Preliminary HSC course. At this stage all students should have their assessments completed and be studying regularly. Failure to complete the Preliminary HSC Course could mean they will not be able to proceed to the HSC course. The majority of Year 11 are focussed and working to their full potential. Year 11 students who are having difficulties to manage the rigours of senior school studies are encouraged to access the Learning Centre for additional support. All students should utilise the wealth of knowledge and support offered by their teachers. Staff are more than willing to provide extra support and assistance at recess or lunch. Ms Perry the Careers adviser is also available to assist students with mapping a career path and for advice in this area.

Year 10:

Year 10 Yearly examinations are fast approaching. All students should be planning their revision and thinking seriously about their goals for these exams in order to maximize results. In the last news letter we gave “Tips for preparing for exams”. Students can access this newsletter on the school web site. Now is the time that all outstanding work needs to be completed and submitted. Failure to do this could result in students not receiving a School Certificate and hence not being able to move into the Year 11 Preliminary course in 2012. If students are unsure of what work they have outstanding, they need to talk to their classroom teacher, Year Adviser or the DP, to seek assistance in sourcing this information.

Glenwood High librarian still loves reading to little ones

GLENWOOD High School librarian Radha Achar has fond memories of reading to her daughters when they were young — and still loves reading to children.

Although opportunities to read to little ones are limited in a high school library, when Mrs Achar gets the chance to share her favourite book with children, she grabs it.

GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL HAS BEEN

IN THE MEDIA AGAIN !!!

A Ruby, A Rug and a Prince Named Doug by Kaye Umansky is Mrs Achar's favourite story to read aloud.

"I like the idea of reading aloud to kids," she said. "It doesn't require any special skills or equipment.

"It's the perfect thing to do, sitting together or cuddled up in bed and I can't believe people don't do it more often.

"There's still magic in reading aloud and my girls still remember the books I read to them with great fondness.

"In my job I don't get to read to children, but I talk about books a great deal and will read a few sentences from a favourite book and often the kids will then want to borrow it from the library."

"I think reading aloud cultivates the imagination, unlike television, which does it all for you."

A Ruby, A Rug and Prince Named Doug is out of print at the moment, but Mrs Achar said most public libraries should have it and other Kaye Umansky books.

Student stomps on bullying 20 Aug 11 by Lawrence Machado

Glenwood High School student Thilini Wellapulli. A CYBER bullying forum is the start of a campaign by Thilini Wellapulli to stamp out the offensive behaviour.

The year 11 student Glenwood High student has organised a forum for Monday to bring together staff, parents and her colleagues to speak about cyber bullying and its many facets.

“All schools have some level of bullying and this forum will hopefully make people aware of it,” Thilini, 16, of Kings Park, said.

“There have been a few incidents in the news and this is a good time to talk about it and do something positive.”

Thilini got the idea after participating in the Max Potential Program with Castle Hill RSL and Future Achievement Australia.

She teamed up with community coach Robbie Duncan, of Castle Hill RSL, to work through eight personal coaching lessons on being the best possible person for herself and the community.

Participants are required to produce and develop a community service program to help and focus on caring for others.

Castle Hill RSL president and Chairman Warren Glenny praised the youngster for her initiative.

“It is very satisfying to see Thilini organise a forum through the Max Potential Program, on such an important issue in our society today,” he said.

As Term 3 draws to a close Glenwood High is preparing to farewell our current school prefects. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with this group of young adults who very quickly formed a cohesive team. They have done an exceptional job in representing the school at many school functions, being proactive in designing programs to combat bullying and being a mature, articulate voice for the student body. The program they developed to combat bullying at Glenwood has received media coverage in a number of local papers and a special message of congratulation from our local member of parliament Michelle Rowland. It will be sad to see the current prefects leave but I am confident that they will all be successful in their future studies and careers.

In preparation for next year, Year 11 students were asked to nominate themselves for the position of 2012 school prefects. 32 students were selected to form a leadership training group that met on a daily basis during Connect time. These students were mentored by Mr Fadaghi and worked through a leadership program called “Today’s Teens, Tomorrows Leaders”. During week 5 these students presented election speeches to Year 10 and 11 to introduce themselves and justify why they would be the best choices as our new school leaders.

In a new initiative this year we worked with the Australian Electoral Commission to carry out the election process. We were lucky to have the services of three electoral commission staff, who trained our SRC reps from Years 7-9 and a number of current Year 12 students to act as polling officials. It was a great learning experience for all students to experience a real life election. Due to the official nature of polling the voting was taken very seriously by all and we received only 5 informal votes out of 492.

It is with great pleasure that I announce the successful elected prefects for 2012, Alice Ao, Monisha Bhogal, Jack Campbell, Kim Chua, Madeline Clark, Tayla Collett, Sara Ho, Ashan Jayakody, Sahibajot Kaur, Brent Lee, Thomas McBride, Sandra Muleya, Yesheel Naicker, Philip Nguyen, Carlee Rawlings and Thilini Wellappuli. Captains and Vice captains will be announced later in the year.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We have signed up for an innovative recycling programme called Foneraiser which turns old mobile phones into funds for our school.

Foneraiser develops the pupils’ enterprise skills as well as teaching them about recycling and the importance of protecting the environment. The programme also allows us to raise funds – the more mobile phones we collect, the more money we will make.

Mobile handsets contain toxic substances which, if they are dumped in landfill, can leak into the surrounding soil and pollute the earth. When they are sent to Foneraiser, they will be recycled and refurbished for developing countries, which will play a major part in peoples’ lives.

You can support our Foneraiser initiative by donating your old mobile phones. We have a collection box for these items at Glenwood High School. So if you have an old mobiles gathering dust in a drawer please consider donating them – simply place them into the satchel provided and return via your child or drop the satchel into the Foneraiser Box in the front office at Glenwood High School. The funds we raise will be used for enabling students to partake in a Global Volunteering Project.

What To Include With Your Mobile Phone • Only your mobile phones and battery is needed. Please make sure you/family are the legal

owners. • Please erase your personal data from your mobile. See www.foneraiser.com.au • Please make sure your SIM card is removed. Getting your family, friends and workplace colleagues, involved in the programme can generate even more funds for the school.

Our collection drives starts 29 Aug 11 and ends 16 Sep 11 please return satchel by 19 Sep 11.

I look forward to receiving your support for this fantastic fundraising initiative!

Yours sincerely,

Lisa Karbon Erla McMaster

Australia's national sail training ship Young Endeavour is now accepting applications for youth to join eleven day voyages departing between January and June 2012. Young Australians aged 16 to 23 can apply for the ballot at www.youngendeavour.gov.au until 30 September 2011. No sailing experience is required.

A voyage in Young Endeavour is an amazing experience, and a unique opportunity for youth to develop teamwork and leadership skills through a world recognised organisation. The current ballot includes voyages along the eastern coast of Australia, which will be crewed by youth from around the country. During each voyage youth crew learn the skills to successfully sail a square rigged ship. They climb the 30 metre mast, set and furl sails, and maintain a 24 hour watch on the bridge. They also learn to navigate, take the helm, keep lookout and help the chef in the ship’s galley. Once they have learned these skills, each youth crew will take command of Young Endeavour for 24 hours, and on their last day at sea will host a local group of youth with special needs, sharing their new found knowledge and experiences. 18 year old Hannah Richards of Blackburn, Victoria completed a voyage from Hobart to Sydney in February, and says it was one of the best things she has ever done. "Young Endeavour pushes you outside your comfort zone. It challenges your expectations and teaches you about your own strengths," says Hannah. "I met new friends from all around Australia and now constantly recommend a voyage in Young Endeavour." 17 year old Errol Zanos travelled all the way from Wagait Beach in the Northern Territory to join the youth crew and sail Young Endeavour into Sydney in July. He applied after hearing about a mate's amazing adventure, and says, "I will always remember climbing aloft at night and furling the sails. As well as learning how to sail a tall ship, my time aboard Young Endeavour has improved my teamwork skills and my self esteem." Since 1988 the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme, in partnership with the Royal Australian Navy, has provided challenging training voyages for over 11,000 young Australians in the tall ship Young Endeavour. The specially designed program delivered aboard the ship increases the youth crew’s self awareness, develops teamwork and leadership skills, and fosters a strong sense of community spirit. For more information please visit www.youngendeavour.gov.au, or contact our office to obtain posters for your school. You are welcome to include this information in your school newsletter or website.

Encourage your students to apply for the voyage of a lifetime in Young Endeavour.

Regards,

Young Endeavour Youth Scheme 1800 020 444 [email protected]

ATTENTION

If you have moved out of the Glenwood High School local enrolment area you need to attach a letter to the Principal outlining the reason for your move. The letter must also explain why you wish your child to remain at the school as a non local enrolment, instead of moving your child/children to their local High School.
