THE REDGUM GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
Innovation Opportunity Diversity Success
ISSUE 2 TERM 1 6 April 2016
Annual School Conference – Teaching Reading and Writing in All Subjects On Saturday 5th March the school held its annual conference for all teaching staff. The focus of this professional learning day was the explicit teaching of literacy in all key learning areas. Led by Ms Rani Levett, Literacy Leader and Head Teacher English, teachers analysed NAPLAN data, identified the literacy requirements within their course syllabuses and immersed themselves in strategies to support and improve student reading and writing skills. Feedback from all conference delegates was extremely positive with teachers inspired to continue to develop student tasks to build confident and proficient readers and writers in all classrooms. Year 12 Half Yearly Exams When this newsletter is published Year 12 will have started their Half Yearly Exams and I am aware many have been working extremely hard in order to be thoroughly prepared for this important assessment time. This is a difficult time for both students and parents/carers and it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle to maximise results and manage the stress of exams. Parents can encourage students to eat balanced meals, drink plenty of water, get 8 hours sleep and exercise moderately in order to boost concentration whilst both studying and in the exam room. Students need to have a study timetable to ensure they are spending adequate time on each course. They need to summarise their notes for each course under the Syllabus dot points if appropriate; access the BOSTES website to review past papers and make sure they practice their writing under exam conditions in order to be thoroughly prepared. When in doubt students must seek out their best and most reliable resource – their teachers! Year 12 are wished all the very best for these exams and are reminded to make sure they take careful note of the feedback teachers give them after the exams have been graded and marked to ensure they fully understand how they can improve upon their responses in the future. Even the student who is placed first can improve and continually strive for excellence. Farewell Ms Jodie Wilson, Science Faculty, is moving to Queensland and therefore will no longer be teaching at Glenwood High School. Ms Wilson has been a temporary teacher in the Science faculty for the past four years and has worked tirelessly to inspire students in the fields of Science and Biology. She has also, been the school coordinator of the Premier’s Volunteering Awards for the past two years and has been an inspiration to the amazing student volunteers.

Mr Bruce Rennie, Technical Support Officer, is retiring and moving to the coast. For the past four years Mr Rennie has ensured student DER devices were working at all times and has been instrumental in the establishment of the BYOD program.
Both Ms Wilson and Mr Rennie will be a great loss to Glenwood and they are wished all the very best for a wonderful future. NAB Work Inspiration Under the guidance of the amazing Ms Simone Fevre, Careers Adviser, twenty Year 10 students participated in the NAB Work Inspiration mentoring program at North Sydney for three days in March. Students were mentored in the areas of goalsetting, communication and networking skills. All students thoroughly enjoyed their three days finding the insight and advice from so many successful young professionals inspirational. Glenwood High School was the only comprehensive public school to be invited to participate in the program.
The facilitator of the program commented on the manners and appreciation displayed by the Glenwood students with all of them making a concerted effort at the end of the first day to seek him out and thank him for the opportunity to learn so much from successful industrial professionals. Glenwood is very proud of the many ways in which our students continue to show respect for others, recognising that this is the Glenwood way for all school community members. NAPLAN – Year 7 & 9 As many of you are aware the nationwide NAPLAN assessment will take place on 10th, 11th and 12th May, 2016. We shall be spending time preparing Year 7 & 9 for this assessment. Currently Year 9 are completing work during Connect honing their literacy skills. The written component will be either a persuasive text or a narrative. At present teachers are focusing on ensuring students understand the structure of an exposition and narrative text and have the opportunity to practise writing such a text. Parents/carers are asked to please reinforce the importance of mastering this skill as successful writing will support student learning far beyond school.
Congratulations Throughout March we have had much cause for celebration as Glenwood students continue to shine in many fields. Our congratulations goes to:
The Glenwood High School Diversity Team led by Mr Rob Leaver who organised a most amazing Harmony Day. The end of Term 1 has arrived so quickly and it has been a productive term for all members of our
Glenwood High School learning community. All students are actively engaged in assessments
tasks, class test, exams and extra curricula opportunities. Staff are actively engaged in
programming, assessment and reporting and professional development. We have a focused and
creative learning community evident across the whole school, which is reflected in the passion and
dedication all students and staff go about their tasks. It is also, a joy to see students and staff
building positive relationships as they progress along the learning continuum together. We would
like to thank all staff, students and parents for their continued efforts and enthusiasm towards all
aspects of the teaching and learning process during Term 1.
Uniform:
Glenwood High School is very proud of our student body and parent support regarding uniform. Students wear their uniform with pride. This standard is one that we wish to uphold in 2016. As we approach the cooler months please ensure students have the correct jumper or jacket. These are available in all sizes from the uniform shop. The jacket can be purchased for $82.00 and the jumper for $75.00. We have also considered the request from all students to wear a blazer and this will be permitted. This is not mandatory but if students would like to wear a blazer they are also available for purchase from the uniform shop for $131.00. Please be aware that students wearing incorrect jumpers or jackets will be asked to remove them.
Junior students have also requested to be permitted to wear ties. This request has been granted.
This is not mandatory but for those students who wish to wear a tie can purchase them from the
uniform shop; boys tie for $20.00 and girls bow tie for $15.00.
The new girl’s stripped pants have arrived and are available at the uniform shop for purchase at a
cost of $60.00. No other pants will be permitted. During the cooler months in terms 2 and 3 girls are
given the option to wear either the skirt or the pants but they must be the new uniform pants only.
We thank everyone in our school community for their continued support with the school uniform.
Our school uniform policy can be accessed at:
http://www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/rules-policies/uniform-policy
Communication:
Our school smartphone mobile app is available on both Apple and Android networks for you to
download. The app gives parents the opportunity to instantly access newsletters, send in
absenteeism notes, access bell times and the calendar for up and coming events and much more.
New features to this communication are being added throughout the year. To download the GHS
app go to either the Apple App store or Android Google Play Market and search for our school
name. If you have difficulties downloading the app there is a helpline to assist:
www.activeschoolapps.com.au/support.
Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
We have recently added a new tab on the school website so parents can access excursion notes.
This should assist students not missing out on these valuable learning experiences due to misplaced
notes. All current excursion notes can be accessed at:
http://www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/excursion-permission-notes
Please remember that all excursion notes with correct payment must be returned to the
administration office by the due date. No late payments can be accepted and change cannot be
given. In many cases eftpos is available for payment.
As you would be aware Glenwood High School has established a SENTRAL parent portal. This portal allows parents to access their child’s timetable, check their attendance and keep up to date with relevant daily notices. You are provided with a unique access key so all information regarding your child remains private. If you are experiencing difficulties, are a non-custodial parent or are new to the school, please contact the school office who will forward your request to the SENTRAL Team. Logging into the portal is as simple as following the hyperlink from the school’s website: http://www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au Click the ‘Student Portal Parent Portal’ tab to access SENTRAL options. Glenwood High School values communication with parents in this is another tool that parents can
access.
Homework and Schoolwork:
One of our positive behaviour for Learning expectations is ‘ready for learning’ and this applies to the
completion of assessment tasks, classwork and homework. It also applies to class participation and
being organised and prepared. Hard work is the key to success and students should maximise their
learning by managing their revision time at home. Students are required to complete their classwork,
homework and assessment tasks in order to meet course and stage requirements. In particular,
students in year 10, 11 and Year 12 need to ensure that their school work is complete to make sure
they receive a credential from the NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational standards at
the end of each year.
Assessment:
As we are well into the commencement of the school year, assignments, assessment tasks and
exams are in full swing. It is imperative that all students and parents are aware of assessment
policies and schedules. Stage 5 (Years 9 & 10) and Stage 6 (Years 11 & 12) have been distributed
to all students. You can also download a copy from the website:
http://www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/years/year-11/assessment-booklet
Please note you will need to select the student’s current year level to access the correct booklet for
their stage and year of study.
The assessment policies explain expectations and requirements regarding all assessments and
exams. It also outlines the process if a task or exam is not completed and how to appeal. Students
and parents are urged to take the time to read the policies and schedules carefully, in order to avoid
confusion and ensure they have the latest information.
Recently this year our Assessment Team have conducted an ‘Assessment Forum’. Parents,
students and staff have been involved in a process to review and evaluate assessment procedures
for our stage 4 students. We would like to thank everyone who has participated in collecting data
through interviews and surveys.
Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
From this feedback Glenwood High School is currently developing an assessment schedule for year 7
& 8. This should assist parents and students in planning and managing assessments and assignments
in order to meet deadlines and complete tasks.
Connect:
It is very important for students to be on time for school. Connect is more then roll call, it is structured
learning time. Programs have been designed to meet each year group needs that enhance their skills,
learning opportunities and social development. During connect students are taught study skills, PBL
expectations (Positive Behaviour for Learning), Naplan preparation, and participate in welfare
programs such as anti-bullying.
The School Diary: There are still some school diaries available at Student Reception. The diary is one of the most valuable items of equipment. It is a means of managing homework, assignments and other requirements. It is essential that students use their diaries to record important dates as this enables them to develop organisational skills. The diary contains important information regarding school policies and procedures, daily organisation, staff contacts and our core values. The diary also contains thinking tools and study strategies to assist students in achieving their best. These will be utilised during connect lessons so it is important that your child brings their diary every day. We would also encourage you to use it as a means of communication with the teachers as teachers do check diaries.
Attendance:
Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children. All children enrolled in school are required to attend school each day it is open for tuition.
“If a student misses as little as 8 days in a school term, by the end of primary school they’ll
have missed over a year of school.”
The above information is from the Department of Education and Community parent pamphlet “Compulsory School Attendance”. This pamphlet answers questions as outlined below: What are my legal responsibilities?
The importance of arriving on time What if my child has to be away from school? My child won’t go to school. What should I do? What might happen if my child continues to have unacceptable absences? What age can my child leave school?
This document in its entirety is available from: http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/media/downloads/schoolsweb/studentsupport/programs/attendance/attend_parents.pdf Further information regarding student attendance is also available at: http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/studentsupport/programs/attendance.php http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/leavingschool/index.php

Positive Behaviour for Learning:
Glenwood High School is a Positive behaviour for Learning (PBL) school. As a PBL school, we choose
to focus on rewarding positive behaviour in order to create an effective learning environment. At
Glenwood High School, we use the following core values to guide all aspects of our teaching and
learning:
Respect for self, others and property
Responsibility for actions
Ready for learning
These core values provide a strong basis for positive interactions between staff and students. Students
are encouraged to give their reward cards to their teachers to ensure they are being recognised for
their efforts. Students are rewarded for following our core values:
Each week 1 student from each year group is rewarded with a $5.00 canteen voucher for
completing their PBL card and submitting it to their year adviser.
To conclude the term I student from each year group is rewarded with a $30.00 I-tune
voucher.
PBL reward cards are an integral part of our reward system. The more PBL cards students
complete the high the reward which ranges from bronze through to platinum and then the
ultimate reward of the medal of excellence.
Reward cards contribute to house points. The winning house each year is rewarded with the
house cup and a special activity.
Chewing Gum:
Parents and students are reminded that chewing gum is a banned item and has been banned ever
since the school was opened. Chewing gum leaves black marks on the concrete and is very difficult
and costly to clean. It also becomes a hygiene issue therefore it is important that everyone keeps the
school looking clean and fresh by not chewing and spitting out gum at school. Glenwood High School
has a zero tolerance approach to chewing gum. It is an important part of our PBL expectations that
students respect themselves and others.
As we conclude term 1 2016 we would like to wish everyone in our learning community a happy and
safe holiday break. We will leave you with another quote from A.A. Milne
“You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
Till next time,
Belinda Young, Deputy Principal – Year 9 – 12
Tina Hosen, Deputy Principal Acting – Year 8 – 11

What does St Patrick’s Day have to do with reading? Well… you could read a green book! Which
many students did!
1483 books were borrowed and read in the month of February by students at Glenwood High. 89
students read more than 5 books in February. The highest number of books borrowed and read by a
student in the month was 30!
This is a good time to remind all students that the PRC site is now open. Students should be
completing their reading entries online. There is a NSW Premier’s Award for all successfully
completed challenges. Here is a link to the website https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Peer Mediation
Peer mediation is one of the conflict resolution strategies available to schools as part of peer
support programs. In peer mediation, one or two trained students lead other students through a
structured process to resolve a dispute.
It seeks to empower students by teaching them the skills they need to resolve conflicts. This
improves relationships and allows for the possibility that conflict can be productive and positive.
The self-empowering aspect of mediation - students participating in decision-making about issues
central to their lives - makes it an important tool for fostering self-regulation, self-esteem and self-
discipline.
It also contributes to the development of students who are self-governing and self-regulating
members of the school and broader community.
Peer Mediation is a very important part of the Positive Behaviour for Learning Processes at
Glenwood High School.
The selection of students who are trained as Peer Mediators is through Expressions of Interest and
teacher endorsements. A full day of training focusses on being fair, listening, empathy, caring,
patience, respect, commitment and dependability.
Thank you to Ms Kafetzis who trained our latest group of Peer mediators on Thursday.
We also thank Zeynep Canli, Jessica Ewens, Jessica Smart, Patrick Gleeson, Mackenzie
Ranson, Madisyn Cole, Stephanie Villamonte, Tijana Suric, Lucy Connell, Priya Kumar,
Alana Dowling, Lucie Coventon and Vaalia Reddy for undertaking the training and giving up
their time in joining others to make school a safe and happy place for their juniors.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) at Glenwood High School
UPDATE
Dear Parents/Carers
Firstly, a massive congratulations needs to go to 7O for being the first class at Glenwood High School to be BYOD ready. Every student in the class has a device of their own choosing, fully commissioned and connected to the DET’s wireless network. They can now look forward to a richer and more engaging learning environment in the years ahead.
Their teachers can now develop ICT rich lessons that take advantage of this new learning opportunity, knowing that every student has a working device with a comprehensive set of common software.
Well done 7O, you are all fabulous!
A special mention also needs to go to Mrs Donna Salt for her hard work and dedication with her class to bring this to fruition.
Secondly, a new Software Download Guide will be available soon that should take all the guess work of downloading and installing software from the NSW Students WebStore. It will be emailed out to the school community and all Glenwood High School students in the coming weeks.
Last but not least, a special thanks needs to go to Mrs Noelene Callaghan for her tireless and amazing work with BYOD since returning to Glenwood High School. The evidence of all she has accomplished in such a short time can be seen all around the school and on the new BYOD@GHS website she has designed to assist students, teacher and parents with the move over to BYOD. Links to the website can be found on the GHS website and in the GHS Parent Portal.
We have included a link below, if you would like to see the great work she done so far. More is on the way!

International Women’s Day, on the 8th March 2016 inspired three senior Glenwood
students, Alicia Currey, Lucy Connell and Tijana Suric of Year 11. The luncheon, held at
Model Farms High School provided an insight on many difficult challenges faced by women all
around the world. Women of different ages presented empowering speeches used to
strengthen and build women’s culture, worth and values. This positive experience has
encouraged these three women to support the cause by sharing their views to the Glenwood
High School community. Alicia, Lucy and Tijana are currently working towards the common
goal of enabling women of all differences to stand up against misogyny and discrimination; to
stand up for equal citizenship and make a difference in the world.

The school wishes to inform all parents/carers the exact cash is
required when paying for excursions and accounts. In the past, the
giving and collection of change for such payments has caused
undue stress and confusion for both staff and students. The school
is most happy to accept payment by cheque or credit card for all
expenses.
Eftpos Facility Due to the financial cost of the use of the Eftpos
facility the policy of a $10.00 minimum charge will remain.
