President’s CornerIt is hard to believe that this
message is my last as your presi-
dent. Although it was accidental
at the outset, and quite a learning
curve for me, I hope that I have
served the club and all of you
well.
What started as a gift mem-
bership from my husband has turned into unexpectedly
interesting and busy years making new friends and
finding new causes. I am pleased that over the past
two years not only has membership grown, but involve-
ment by members has grown as well. I am confident
that this will continue to be the case – with the help of
every one of us.
I am proud of our activities, which include club-
house restoration, donations of children’s books, Arbor
Day, Sea Farers’ Christmas shoe boxes, the Ice Cream
Social, the Red Hot Hibiscus Gala at Pier 66, the
Women in Distress Race Walk, Heifer International,
and the Calder scholarship events.
All of these successes were the result of dedi-
cated, positive, and cheerful efforts by fellow mem-
bers all of whom you know. If you don’t know them, get
involved and try something new – if you are like me, you
will be really pleased at what happens when you take
the leap and spend some time on our club’s events and
work.
As we elect a new president, I
hope that everyone continues in
the spirit of harmony, hard work
and fun as we support the causes
of the club in the community and
with each other. I know I will!
T hank you for the honor and
privilege of serving as your presi-
dent. Yours in Federation,
Alice

Art Show Program on Brass Rubbing
Bev Hoppe, who lived in Eng-
land for 5 years, shared her
knowledge about the art of
brass rubbing and talked
about each of the rubbings
she did while living there. She
brought 2 miniature brasses
and Jean Deering (right) did
a rubbing of her own of Lady
Margaret Peyton.
Thanks to Genia Duncan Ellis
and the Nominating Committee
for their work in filling the
slate. Be sure to come to the
April meeting to vote for offi-
cers and for the Woman of the Year! Have a look at the
nominees on page 3.
May’s meeting will be the Installation Luncheon at the Bimini
Boatyard. We will also present the Club scholarship to a de-
serving young lady and honor the FLWC Woman of the Year.
The FFWC Spring Convention will be held in Orlando from
April 17 - 19. Planning to attend are Alice Sakhnovsky,
Gretchen Thompson and I. For anyone who’d like to know
more about Federation and why we do reporting, the state
meetings are very informative. The next one will be in Sep-
tember. Let me know if you’d be interested in attending. You
can learn more by going to http://gfwcflorida.org and read-
ing about it. Also, don’t forget to visit the GFWC site at
http://gfwc.org. You are a member of an international or-
ganization which offers numerous leadership opportunities!
Jeri Pryor shared an “Ivy” tidbit with
us at the meeting: Ivy left the Meth-
odist church because the minister
stated that “a woman’s place is in the
home.” She did a study of church phi-
losophies and decided to become a 7th
Day Adventist! Ivy’s birthday was
March 24, one day before Mae Sil-
ver’s on March 25. To recognize Ivy
along with her own 75th birthday ,
Mae brought a birthday cake to the February meeting!
Valerie Taylor was really thrilled when she
received a stack of artistic “thank-you”
notes from the elementary students who
received the books donated at the Tea.
She’s still hoping to give more books, so if
you see some good ones, remember the kids!
Here’s something about which I feel we
should all be aware: Scamming - both internet and actual -
has become more rampant in recent months. Just tonight, I
received one of those e-mailed Nigeria-type scam letters,
ostensibly from an acquaintance who said he was in the UK
and had misplaced his wallet. The note asked for funds to be
sent by Western Union to an address in the UK. I Googled
“scams using personal address books” and found the exact
type of thing! It’s really bad when scammers can steal your
own e-mail address! So be alert! With the economy the way
it is, there are a lot of people trying to get our money!
And that’s the last byte for this year! Bev

Newsy Notes from HelenBy Helen Von Salzen
I learned this song from the Conservation
Department of the Woman's Club of Ra-
leigh in North Carolina. It is sung to the
tune of “My Favorite Things” from The
Sound of Music. I divide my time between homes in NC
and in Florida.
Although some of the trees are not known here in
South Florida and the snow image is foreign to us, this
is a great song to commemorate Arbor Day or Earth
Day (April 22) and other horticultural festivities and
great for those in the landscape and tree business.
Enjoy! Helen

LOVE THOSE TREES
Chestnuts, Magnolias and Flowering Dogwood,
Bright flaming Maples and tall Pines that smell good;
Oak leaves in springtime and acorns in Fall,
Here named a few trees, but surely not all.
Cypress and Hickory, and Pecan and Gingko,
Hemlock and Holly all covered with soft snow,
Blooms of pink Cherry that sway in the breeze,
These are a few of our favorite trees.
Trees are a wonder, a gift from above.
We must conserve them
and plant more with love.
They offer shelter for birds on the wing,
Warm nests for fledglings,
no wonder they sing.
When the leaves fall, and the winds blow,
We are filled with awe.
We humbly give thanks for the beauty we see.
Now please don't destroy our trees.
