History.The Little Restaurant That Could!WELCOME! 2018 marks the 67th Anniversary Year in business for the Red Cottage Restaurant -- and the 37th year under Rosenbach family ownership!

Located in the heart of the South Dennis Historic District, the Red Cottage sits on the site of the 1828 Capt. Wilbur Harden Homestead, later the Capt. Obed Nickerson, Jr. Homestead, which was “flaked” (an old Cape Cod term meaning dismantled piece by piece) and moved to Pocasset, Mass. in 1926. Today’s “Red Cottage” actually started out as a one-room “camp” built in 1936 by Walter J. Weeman. In 1949, the “camp” was expanded, the seasonal restaurant opened in the garage in 1951 and - for a time there was a boat-building shop in the dining room where guests dine today!

Originally established in 1951 by Kenneth Pareseau as a seasonal-only restaurant serving strictly-fresh fish in the converted garage of the Pareseau’s house, it was sold in 1953 to the Mathieu family, who expanded it to a variety/grocery store. From 1956 until 1962, it was owned-and-operated by the beloved Ottile “Tilly” Brix, who added fabulously popular “penny candy” to the mix. Subsequently, it was owned by the Powers, Madeiros, Gordon and Peabody families.

In 1981, the restaurant was purchased by Maureen & Chuck Rosenbach. The boundless energy, enthusiasm and devotion of son Dan Rosenbach - who grew up in the business and later graduated from Johnson & Wales University - quickly resulted in moving the grocery business out and expanding the restaurant to its present size, providing a homey place for friends and family to meet and enjoy thehomemade goodness of the restaurant’s signature breakfast and lunch offerings using only the freshest ingredients.

Under Chef Dan’s stewardship in 2009, the restaurant underwent a top-to-bottom “period” restoration, boasting a return to its 1950’s roots and splendor in the dining room, installation of a vintage South Dennis picture collection on the walls, and all-new of “state-of-the-art” restaurant equipment throughout. In 2013, dinner service was introduced from 5-8PM, and billed as “Red Cottage At Night” during July and August, which has proven to be a popular hit with locals and visitors alike.

Over the years, we have been honored to be voted #1 Best Breakfast Restaurant and #1 Best Lunch Restaurant in Readers Choice Awards, Awards of Excellence from Trip Advisor and Yelp! and rated in Fodor’s and many other competitions. As always, we appreciate your loyal and unwavering support year in, year out, for 67 years! Thank you!
