So you overslept on Saturday and realize your planned park-ing spot is filled with someone else’s truck and grill. Have no fear! As long as you’re in Athens on Game-day, you can have a blast and make fast friends with other bulldog fans. Here’s a few places that have cold drinks and plenty of big-screen televisions.

UGA faithful earnoff-field honors

University of Georgia fans are recognized as tailgating roy-alty across the country — and now we’ve been officially named by Southern Living magazine as one of the top 15 tailgating centers in the country.

Some of the bulldogs’ rivals also are on the list, including Louisiana State University and the University of Alabama.

You can vote for UGA to win the 2013 tailgating crown by voting at southernliving.com till Sept. 30 — but win, lose or draw, we know bulldogs have the most fun on and off the field.

Rules for the tailgating road

Gameday is a blast and the University of Georgia adminis-tration and staff want to make sure everyone’s Saturdays are positive. Here are a few of the regulations that will be in play for the 2013 season.

No tailgating setups before 7 a.m. on Saturday

You can park cars in legal spaces before 7 a.m., but you’ve got to delay setting up gear and making noise till that morning hour.

No unauthorized use of UGA resources (power and cable hookups)

Fans who want to watch television or use other entertainment devices that require electricity are allowed to do so as long as they provide their own power and video source.

Where to find the restroomUGA places portable toilets

around the campus on Gamedays. In addition, permanent restrooms are available at multiple buildings on campus – Tate Center, Student Learning Center and Joe Frank Har-ris Commons.

No corporate or professional tailgates without permission

Large corporate and professional tailgates violate both state and local laws and they take up large amounts of space, pushing others farther away from the stadium and taking up prime tailgating spaces for regular fans. For that reason, those who wish to organize corporate and professional tailgates should contact Georgia IMG Sports Marketing for information concerning designated corporate areas.

Other regulationsSecurity: No tailgate can have

private security.Bartenders: All tailgates must be

self-serve.Commercial advertisements:

Tailgates can not promote alcohol or tobacco products on campus.

Physical barriers: Fences, gating,

and other physical barriers limiting access are prohibited.

Limited access or admission: This includes items such as wristbands, hand stamps and other methods that limit access to public property within a tailgate.

Transactions for service: Sale of services or admission is prohibited.

Product give-aways: There can be no product give-aways for promo-tional purposes.

DJ: There can be no DJ services on campus.

Pro tips for sure fall fun

By Mitch BlomertA fan’s first Saturday in

Athens can be overwhelm-ing. With thousands of Georgia fans flocking to Athens to cheer on the Uni-versity’s most prized team, visitors who don’t know the ropes on Gameday may find themselves lost among the sea of red and black attire.

“It’s crowded, but it’s a fun time,” said Brent Ball, a history major from Free Home who has attended over 20 games while at-tending the University. “Just make sure you know what you’re doing.”

Like any school with a big-ticket football team, Gameday festivities begin outside the stadium, often

hours before kickoff. That gives fans plenty of activities to do – and plenty of things not to do – before heading into Sanford Stadium alongside the 92,000-plus visitors.

With so many people celebrating a common a cause, it’s easy for fans to miss out on the elements of the Gameday that make it so lively – and also easy to go over the edge.

To make the experience worth-while, here are a few tips for attend-ing a Georgia football game:

Show up early: Watching the Bulldogs in action isn’t about pulling up to a parking spot an hour before kickoff and heading straight to the stadium.

Fans often arrive hours before the game begins to set up tailgates, look around downtown Athens or cheer on the team as it walks into the sta-dium, known as the “Dawg Walk.”

“It’s usually not chaotic if you come early,” said Jim Dwyer, direc-tor of the University bookstore. “If you come right after the Dawg Walk

and right before the game starts, that’s when it’s going to be the most chaotic.”

The University bookstore is located just outside the Sanford Stadium and serves as the primary team gear store. As a result, the crowd around the Tate Plaza area tends to be the worst as the kickoff time approaches.

“The bookstore has been recog-nized as one of the Gameday ritu-als and experience that people go through,” Dwyer said. “Coming in early is going to give you the best opportunity to browse and not feel like you’re being pushed through the store.”

Go easy on the alcohol: Georgia is known as a party school for a reason.

Alcohol is commonly consumed before games, during tailgates and pregame get-togethers. Over-consumption, paired with humid weather that dominates the majority of the season, can leave fans feel-ing dehydrated once they are in the stadium.

28 game

Page 29: The Red and Black Tailgate Guide 2013

“Make sure you don’t drink a lot before the game,” Ball said. “That way you can enjoy the game and not have to be worrying about passing out or anything.”

No tickets? No problem: Some-times the best deals on tickets are right outside the stadium on Gameday. While students have their

tickets pre-loaded on the identifica-tion card, the general public can find better deals from sellers on campus and in downtown Athens.

“I don’t think it’s that impor-tant to get the tickets beforehand, because there’s a lot of scalpers,” Ball said. “You can get pretty good prices. You see them everywhere.”

A winning team of sports traditions

By Justin Hubbard The University of Georgia

has been in existence since 1785, and there are countless traditions that have emerged over those many years. They are what give the school color, character and what we are

expected to pass down to the younger generations of Bull-dogs to follow.

Here are just a few of the many famous symbols and time honored traditions Georgia’s campus will offer students.

The Chapel Bell The Chapel Bell, on North

Campus, is a long-standing tradition at Georgia. Origi-nally, its ring dismissed classes throughout the day, but now, the bell is a Bulldog football mainstay.

In the 1890s, freshmen were required to help ring the bell constantly until midnight after every home victory. If Georgia triumphed over a hated rival, the bell would ring all night long.

The practice of ringing the Chapel Bell after football victories still is in place — although it is no longer a re-quirement of freshmen — and students can ring it any time they want to.

Glory, Glory (Battle Hymn) Just before the start of home football games, a trumpet solo by a member

of the Redcoat Band begins from the southwest upper deck section of the stadium.

Once the solo is complete, famed Georgia announcer Larry Munson nar-rates a highlight package that includes footage of Georgia greats, such as Herschel Walker, Lindsay Scott and David Greene.

While the video footage rolls, the Redcoat Band plays the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

This is an awe-inspiring experience if you grew up listening to the late Munson announce Georgia football games on the radio, and is a spectacle that is near and dear to the hearts of all those in the Bulldog nation.

A good dog Georgia is home

to one of the best known and recogniz-able mascots in col-lege athletics — Uga.

The University first introduced the live bulldog mas-cot with “Uga I” in 1956. Since then, eight more English bulldogs have filled the role.

Russ is the reign-ing Uga and has earned his place in history as the Uni-versity’s first spot-ted mascot.

When not patrol-ling the sidelines or lounging with the players, Russ lives with his owners in Savannah, Ga.

Preventtrash-gating

Tens of thousands of fans swarm to Athens on football week-ends to have a great time, but having a good time can mean a lot of trash. Take steps to bring less to your tailgate, pitch your trash into a bag or can and make sure to put recyclables in the correct bin. Here are a few trash records noted by the University of Georgia:

34 tons of garbage dumped in the landfill after a home game

72 tons of garbage hauled to the landfill after an SEC night game

200 people clean up campus after a home game

34 Post game

Page 35: The Red and Black Tailgate Guide 2013

To help cut down on the waste try these tips:

• Get rid of extra packaging. Junk extra cardboard and plastic packag-ing at home, and instead use a reus-able container, like a cooler, to keep everything together.

• Dump the disposables. Use cups, plates and utensils you can wash and reuse. Employ reusable shopping bags to move games, toys and other gear.

• Bring trash bags to your tailgat-ing site to collect waste. Crews of UGA employees will conduct a clean sweep through campus on Sunday, and bagging the trash helps restore the University to normal for Monday morning.

• Recycle plastic and glass bottles, as well as aluminum cans. Head to-ward the recycling bin first, instead of the trash can.
