NEWS briefs

Christchurch man Scott Double has become the second person in the Canterbury region to be convicted and fined for carrying out sanitary plumbing work without authorisation within the last two weeks.

Plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying are regulated industries in New Zealand and it is illegal to do this work unless authorised by the board.

Mr Double was one of a number of people who have been uncovered working illegally in the Canterbury region during an authorisation audit of approximately 80 building construction sites.

The board’s Chairman, Peter Jackson said the reason the provision of these services is restricted is because of the serious adverse effects that substandard sanitary plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying can have on public health and safety.

Unauthorised workThe Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board is warning Selwyn home owners to make sure the tradesmen working on plumbing, gasfitting or drainlaying projects are qualified to do so.

All plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers should carry an authorisation card.

“We’re very conscious of the substantial number of tradespeople in Canterbury who have been working hard to get the region back on its feet, and recognise their frustration in the few who are undermining their efforts.

“Those who cheat the system and put public health and safety at risk will be caught.”

Mr Jackson advises Selwyn residents to see an authorisation card before any work commences.

“This way they can be assured the work is being done lawfully and by a competent tradesperson.”

The work is being funded from $530,000 in extra funding provided by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to recognise the extra pressure on Selwyn roads from increased traffic as a result of economic and population growth.

Selwyn District Council’s assets manager Murray Washington said contractors are currently working to remove high grass shoulders along roads to allow water to drain away without ponding on the road surface.

"When the foundations of our roads become wet their strength is reduced and they become more prone to

Road improvementsWork is now underway to improve surface drainage on up to 350km of local roads in Selwyn.

developing potholes or edge damage, particularly on heavy vehicle routes.

"A way to improve the performance and resilience of Selwyn's typically flat roads and roadsides is to improve how the road surface drains, especially as our roads are having to deal with more traffic.”

Mr Washington said shoulder removal is a normal part of the council's road maintenance programme and is normally done prior to resealing work or when gravel is replaced on unsealed roads.

“The extra NZTA funding has allowed additional shoulder removal to be done at other sites.”

A group of diehard local young riders and a visitor from Ruapehu were first on the quad chair, picking up ‘First on the Lift’ T-shirts as they did so.

Christchurch brothers 15-year-old Simon Yornston and Ben Yornston (18) were joined by friend Henry Penny (19), also from Christchurch, and Andy Herron from Ruapehu to take the honours.

All four stayed the night up at the ski area to bag the best seats in the house and it wasn’t the first time for the brothers, who have made the annual trek many times.

They were joined by around 500 keen skiers most of whom were all were treated to a glass of bubbly to celebrate opening day as they got on the lift.

Snow conditions were good with 15 to 25cm of snow on trails and the beginners’ area also operating. Five features on a mini-terrain park set up near the base building were also a big hit on day one.

Canterbury ski season opens up at Mt HuttThe Canterbury ski season got underway over the weekend with the opening up of the Mt Hutt ski area.

First on the chair for the first run of the season at Mt Hutt were, from left, Simon Yornston, Henry Penny, Ben Yornston and Andy Herron.

Ski area manager James Mackenzie was delighted to be open after weather setbacks earlier in the week.

"There were just miles of smiles up here,” he said.

“We’re very happy with how opening day has run and with the conditions, especially considering winds caused us to close on Friday.”

The station’s two pumps were demolished when a car ran into them in what owner Stuart Jones described as a ‘senseless act of vandalism’.

For 35 years the Jones family has run the station with Mr Jones’ son Hamish and daughter Vanessa Moore currently working there alongside him.

“This is a great community to live in and it certainly has been the worst thing to happen to us since we have been here,” Mr Jones said.

“The damage it has caused our business has been even worse than the September earthquake in 2010 because after that, even though there was damage in the store, we were still able to pump fuel.”

Mr Jones estimates business has been down by around two thirds since

The temporary replacement pump installed this week will dispense diesel and 91 octane fuel.

The Kirwee Challenge’s store, which acts as a local dairy and postal outlet, is still open and the mechanics workshop, which is run by Hamish, is fully operational.

Meanwhile, an 18-year-old Hornby man will appear in the Christchurch District Court on July 3.

He will face up to charges of reckless use of a motor vehicle and driving with excess breath alcohol in relation to the incident.

Kirwee Challenge store manager Vanessa Moore looks on as a temporary replacement pump is installed.

Last week in The Record we asked readers for their feedback on whether Selwyn needs community boards following a Selwyn District Council representation review committee recommendation the boards be scrapped. We received the following feedback.

Dear Editor,

I’m slightly horrified to read that the Council is trying to do away with our Community Boards.

In a district so geographically varied as Selwyn it’s ridiculous to think the Council can have a handle on everything without each area having a specific voice.

What are matters of concern to a small community are sometimes mere annoyances to a greater Council, and we need our local Community Boards to highlight these areas and give a local perspective.

Community Boards can also handle matters that don’t need to take up Council time so are valuable in that way too.

If they are looking to cut costs, if they are anything like other Councils they will have a raft of expensive freelance Consultants employed, maybe they could look at reviewing them instead?

Let’s hope we can knock this crazy idea on the head.

Sue Carline-Wright, Kirwee

Dear Editor,

As I am a Darfield resident, and a long-time resident of the Malvern area, I think it most important that a Community Board is retained for the district.

As Rolleston grows bigger and bigger, the smaller outlying areas will increasingly be overlooked. Malvern is a distinct community, also growing rapidly, which needs a distinct voice, to express concerns about its welfare and growth.

I strongly urge that the two Community Boards are kept as important instruments of local democracy.

Janet Lilly, Darfield

In this column I would like to tell you about some of the things that were announced in the Budget recently which I think are important for Selwyn.

Often in the post-Budget media coverage, there is a focus on just a couple of announcements and other items do not get so much coverage.

One of the announcements that I was really pleased about as the local MP for Selwyn was that up to $100 million has been set aside for Lincoln University to rebuild its earthquake-damaged science facilities, as part of the Lincoln Hub development.

This funding has come from the Future Investment Fund, which is the name given to the proceeds from the Government’s share offer programme. This programme has enabled the Government to fund $939 million of new capital investment.

Another aspect of the Budget that will benefit our region is a

What’s in the Budget for Selwyn?

20% increase in tertiary funding for agriculture and a 7.5% increase for science. This announcement recognises the vital role of agriculture and science in our national economy and will assist in attracting students to study at Lincoln University.

For our rural community, which is still enduring the effects of the very dry summer, the need for more water storage projects is a pressing concern.

The Budget included $25 million in operating funding for five years from 2016/17 to kick-start irrigation projects through the Irrigation Acceleration Fund (IAF). This funding will help to complete the investigation and development of new regional irrigation proposals.

Providing a reliable water supply for farmers and growers has the potential to boost growth and create more jobs in regions such as Selwyn, with a significant rural population.

The nine kilometre cycleway will run along Lowes Road, Lincoln Rolleston Road and Boundary Road. From there, cyclists will be able to connect up to the existing Rail Trail path which runs north from Lincoln to Christchurch through Prebbleton, and south to Little River.

Selwyn Distr ict Counci l ’s transportation asset manager Andrew Mazey said the construction process has been good so far.

"The section from Lincoln through to Springs Road has now been sealed. Between Springs and Shands Road the track is in the process of being excavated, boxed and filled, with around half of this work now complete.

“At Rolleston the urban section of cycleway along Lowes Road and between Lincoln Rolleston Road and Goulds Road is progressing with the installation of kerb and channel prior to the pathway being installed alongside it."

The off-road track will form part of a wider mainly off road cycling network connecting the main townships together in eastern Selwyn.

New cycleway taking shapeSelwyn residents will soon have a new cycleway to enjoy as construction has started on a new Rolleston to Lincoln cycleway.

“This includes a planned Rolleston to Templeton connection, the recently opened Springston-Lincoln cycleway and proposed future plans to upgrade Gerald Street through Lincoln to include separate cycling facilities,” Mr Mazey said.

Other cycleways are also planned between Leeston and Doyleston and Glentunnel and Coalgate.

The development of the $1 million cycleway is being jointly funded with $700,000 being provided by the New Zealand Transport Agency of which $300,000 came from the Government's Urban Cycleway Fund and the remainder by the Selwyn District Council.

Mr Mazey said this funding assistance has enabled council to bring forward the project by eight years from when it was originally planned to undertaken.

“The cycleway will add to a growing number of tracks being developed in Selwyn as part of Council's Walking and Cycling Strategy, including the Little River Rail Trail established by the Christchurch-Little River Rail Trail Trust

which currently has an 11 kilometre long link between Hornby, Prebbleton and Lincoln.

“When fully completed, the 44 kilometre long Little River Rail trail will run from Hornby to Little River on

The Rolleston to Lincoln cycleway is expected to be completed in time to be ready to use in the spring time.

The art auction and dinner, known as Art and Soul, will be held on Friday, June 26 at the Glentunnel Community Centre.

Organiser Dee Innes said the event will offer a great evening of fun, appreciation of art, delicious food and good company.

“We have some amazing artists supporting this event which allows us to offer high quality art for the auction.”

These artists include Amelia Dunbar, Simon Edwards, Mike Glover, Anna Guild, Georgia Hendrie, Min Kim, Caroline Morten, Katrina Mitchell, Lorraine

The Carter Group is developing a new $500 million industrial and logistics park on 122 hectares of prime industrial-zoned land in Rolleston adjacent to the Izone industrial park.

Stage 1 of the South Island Industrial Port, or IPort, kicked off with the sale of 27 hectares to Lyttelton Port of Christchurch (LPC) last year to develop an inland port. The Carter Group is now moving to fully develop the remaining 95ha.

“A huge advantage for companies locating at IPort will be the shared boundary with LPC’s inland port,” Tim Carter said.

“Due to the establishment of LPC’s inland port, as well as the Port of Tauranga’s inland port at Izone, Rolleston will become a significant regional hub for businesses involved in exporting, importing, logistics, industrial and agriculture.

“We cannot see large importers or exporters establishing anywhere other than Rolleston in the next five years.

“Being strategically positioned at the intersection of Canterbury’s major freight arteries, the South Island main trunk railway line, the Midland rail line and State Highway 1, is important.

“These arteries provide easy access to Lyttelton Port and Christchurch Airport which are the major freight links into and out of the region,” Mr Carter said.

LPC chair Trevor Burt said the

company’s new inland port at Rolleston will deliver major benefits for businesses and the entire region.

“It is part of our long term vision to meet future freight demands and gear up for growth,” Mr Burt said.

“With a substantial increase forecast in imports and exports, our Rolleston facility will ensure South Island businesses can access the most effective supply chain solution.

“The purpose-built facility will be able to receive and deliver import and export

containers, provide container storage and repairs, and transfer containers between trucks and trains. It will reduce the need for trucks on roads, avoiding traffic congestion and delays.

“With direct rail connection to the west, south and Lyttelton Port, the operation will support connectivity and significantly contribute to Canterbury’s growing economy.”

Tim Carter said the construction of the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2, to begin in early 2016, will be

It’s snow time The 2015 ski and boarding season got underway over the weekend with the Mt Hutt ski area being the first of the Canterbury fields to open.

Mt Hutt ski areaA vast mountain with 472

hectares of diverse terrain, Mt Hutt offers a challenging and exciting snow experience.

Mt Hutt’s lift and trail system, recently redeveloped, has made it a candidate for possibly one of the best lift and terrain mixes in the South Island.

Mt. Hutt has also seen the addition of more snowmaking, base building development and a new mini terrain park for beginners and novices.

Mt Hutt offers all levels of skier and rider an awesome winter experience. Trails, off-piste, terrain parks and halfpipe are accessed by a six seater express chairlift, an express quad chair, a triple chair and a 140m long surface conveyor lift. Each winter, there is the opportunity to watch the many of the world’s best ski racers who come downunder for training.

Mt Hutt is a 90-minute drive from Christchurch and 35-minutes from Methven.

With a mix of commercial and club fields, plus world-class heli-skiing, Canterbury offers skiers and boarders a wide variety of winter options.

Mt Hutt is regarded as having some of the most varied terrain in the South Island and attracts skiers and boarders from not just all over New Zealand but also from across the globe.

The Porters ski area, which is the

closest field to Christchurch, will this season debut its new quad chairlift, part of a $7 million upgrade of the field’s facilities.

As well as the commercial fields Canterbury offers a variety of club fields, principally along the Craigieburn Range, which cater for the beginner to expert skier or boarder and for those who enjoy a laid back atmosphere.

Porters ski areaWith a top elevation of 2000 metres,

Porters is endowed with regular natural snow from both southerly and westerly weather patterns providing some of the best snow conditions for skiers and boarders.

It is the closest ski area to Christchurch, just 89km from the airport and around a one hour drive

from Christchurch. The road to the field off SH73 has a good surface and is easy driving at most times of the year.

The field’s new $4.5 million quad chairlift can carry up to 2000 people an hour and the field’s base facilities have also received an upgrade for the 2015 season.

Mt Olympus Mt Olympus, run by the Windwhistle

Winter Sports Club is set deep in the Ryton Valley, 45km from Windwhistle. Its back-country setting gives it a real rugged feel. The ski area is a wide open south facing bowl which captures some of the best southerly powder in Canterbury.

Situated half way up the mountain, the recently renovated Top Hut Lodge and beginner’s slope is reached via an access tow. The beginner’s area is safe and close to the shelter of the lodge. The rest of the mountain is suitable for intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders.

Canterbury ski fields offer some of the country’s best terrain for boarders.

The Mt Hutt ski area has some of the most varied terrain of all Canterbury ski fields.

Broken RiverBroken River is regarded as one of

New Zealand’s premier boutique club fields. Maintained by club members, it provides an inviting and friendly atmosphere mixed with some amazing soft-snow conditions.

The terrain is suitable for everyone with a dedicated learner’s area in front of Palmers lodge.

Broken River is a destination for adventurous snowboarders with

powder-filled bowls, natural drop-offs and lips to keep them challenged all day. It also offers some of the most highly rated backcountry skiing available in the Canterbury region. More experienced skiers should take advantage of the rolling terrain in the bowls of Broken River and Allan’s Basin for some incredible off-piste, patrolled backcountry skiing.

Mt Cheesman Mt Cheeseman is the second ski

area along the Craigieburn Range and boasts a sunny northeast basin with open rolling terrain. With great beginner and intermediate slopes, Mt Cheeseman is perfect for learners and families.

Two T bars give easy access to well-groomed gentle terrain with the

learners tow located right beside the main lodge. Mt Cockayne offers great off-piste conditions and the face holds snow well.

If you are keen on a taste of backcountry, it is little effort to drop into Tarn Basin to get some fresh lines.

Craigieburn Valley Craigieburn has achieved cult

status among some of the country’s hottest skiers.

Three high capacity rope tows service a vertical rise of 500 metres. Terrain at Craigieburn Valley is varied and challenging with the infamous 600m vertical descent of Middle Basin accessible by a short traverse from the tow.

Craigieburn is situated only 1½

hours (110km) from Christchurch on Highway 73. The 6km road up to the ski field is accessible to all motor vehicles except camper vans. It is essential all vehicles carry chains though these are generally only required by two wheel drives.

On the field up to 65 people can be accommodated in the lodge which features 6-person bunkrooms and private double rooms.

The Craigieburn Valley ski area provides a challenge for the experienced skier and boarder.

Temple BasinTemple Basin Ski Area is 4km west

of Arthur's Pass in the middle of one of New Zealand's most spectacular national parks. To reach the field there is a 40 to 60 minute walk (a free goods lift is provided).

Temple Basin is a club field with onfield accommodation in two lodges with terrain which covers everything from beginners to daredevil stuff.

Brilliant upper slopes, ski touring, snowboarding and the sunny aspect means Temple Basin can have great snow when other South Island ski areas are barely covered.

Temple Basin is one of the top snowboard areas in New Zealand and was voted the country’s top snowboard area by a NZ Snowboard Association/NZ Skiing Times survey.

Young farmers in the makingu by Kent Caddick

Two Selwyn teenagers are aiming for the top as they head to Taupo for the national final of the AgriKids farming competition early next month.

Thirteen-year-olds Mya Reid and Libby Millar, along with team mate James Hamilton from Omihi in North Canterbury, secured their place in the final after finishing in the top three at the Tasman regional finals in Kirwee in March, which, like the final, is part of the Young Farmer of the Year competition.

For Mya, who like Libby is a boarder at St Margaret’s College in Christchurch, this is her third year competing in the AgriKids contest, while for Libby it is her first time.

“As we are both 13 it is the last year we can compete in AgriKids because it is for ages 8 to 13 and we are hoping our age and experience will help us,” Mya said.

Both girls have been involved in local farming competitions with Mya following on a family tradition of being involved in the Courtney A&P Show and Libby, from Southbridge, in the Ellesmere A&P Show.

Southbridge’s Libby Millar, left, and Mya Reid from Aylesbury are intending to make the most of their last opportunity in the national final of the AgriKids farming competition.

Mya has often helped her parents and other family members in the running of the Courtney A&P Show which is held near their Aylesbury property.

“I helped Mum organise the young farmer’s competitions and she encouraged me into entering the AgriKids competition,” Mya said.

Libby said she has been involved with the Ellesmere Show since she was in Year 5.

“It was Mya who got me involved in AgriKids though when she was asking around for someone to join her in a team for this year’s competition.”

The girls have named their team ‘Two Ewes and a Ram’ and say one of the keys to be successful in the competition is to have a sound general knowledge of farming.

“The three of us have similar but slightly different farming backgrounds which helps our overall general knowledge,” Mya said.

As well as general knowledge the team will have their farming skills tested in a variety of modules in the final which also includes sections on animal

awareness, environment and day to day jobs on the farm.

Both girls enjoy the challenge of animal identification but admit the gate building at the regional final was a challenge for them.

The pair is studying hard for the Taupo final where they would like to finish at least in the top ten and have also been fundraising hard to get the money to go to the final.

“We’ve been selling lollies and chocolates at school and we have been able to get some local sponsorship which has been great,” Libby said.

Both girls, who would like to develop careers in farming, are keen to compete at the next level of competition which is called TeenAg and is a precursor to the Young Farmer competition itself.

The changing landscape of the central Canterbury plains as old trees and long-established shelter belts disappear to accommodate new irrigation technology, and what can be done to restore shelter and some balance to the environment in conjunction with the advance of

irrigation, will be the subjects of a field day planned by the Central Canterbury Farm Forestry Association.

The field day to be held on Saturday, June 20 will start at 10.30am at the Clarkson brothers’ property on Greendale Road. Bring lunch and a folding chair.

The Department of Conservation has commissioned Dr Roberts and a group of her colleagues to write a report which raises awareness of the role ecosystems play in our happiness.

The report highlights the fact that nature provides us with the air we breathe and the water we drink, as well as offering countless opportunities for recreation and leisure.

However, our belief that material wealth and possessions will make us happy is putting our ecosystems at risk, and this could have an adverse effect on our comfort in the long term, the report indicates.

“The more we consume, the more damage we do to the environment, but we assume that if we have more material things, we’ll be happier,” Dr Roberts says.

New research explores nature of wellbeingThe natural environment is essential to our wellbeing, yet its role in this regard is often underappreciated, says Lincoln University researcher Dr Lin Roberts.

“An enormous amount of expenditure goes into creating advertising that encourages us to consume, but studies show our most satisfying experiences don’t tend to require commercial goods or services.”

Dr Roberts says we get our best happiness return from things like close relationships, helping others, savouring small pleasures, setting our own goals and experiencing time in nature.

“And the good news is, these ways of seeking happiness have much less impact on the ecosystems that our long-term wellbeing depends on,” she says.

The report, entitled The nature of wellbeing – how nature’s ecosystem services contribute to the wellbeing of New Zealand and New Zealanders, also aims to promote the message that the environment’s contribution to our

wellbeing should play a greater role in public decision-making.

On a global scale, governments and researchers have been exploring how best to measure the wellbeing of a nation in an effort to address the issue.

“We have traditionally relied on GDP to measure progress, but the limitations of this are being increasingly recognised,” Dr Roberts says.

“For example, some situations that are detrimental to our wellbeing – such as car crashes and natural disasters – increase GDP, so it is a mistake to think that a rise in GDP will always mean we are better off.”

In fact, studies show that the more we focus on money, the less happy we are, she says.

“Obviously, we need enough money to meet our basic needs, but once we get

Dr Lin Roberts

beyond a certain point of wealth, more money brings little additional happiness.

“This could be due to wealth being relative, in the sense that the more money you have, the more you feel you need to buy.”

Dr Roberts says we also compare ourselves to others, and it is our relative standing rather than absolute levels of income that matters to most people.

“We adapt quickly to situations too, so having a lot of money becomes ‘the new normal’ after a while and doesn’t necessarily contribute to our happiness in a lasting way.

“However, if we can get better at identifying and choosing ways to meet our needs that bring us more happiness, while at the same time causing less damage to the natural systems we depend on, we’ll be happier.

Unfortunately hormonal imbalance is not uncommon and can leave women feeling distressed and totally out of control in mind and body.

The two main hormones - oestrogen and progesterone - fluctuate during the menstrual cycle and increase during pregnancy.

Oestrogen is responsible for proliferation of cells to get the uterus ready for implantation. Progesterone is the hormonal precursor of many other steroid hormones so as well as having an important role in menstruation and reproduction it is also involved in a number of other metabolic processes. In addition progesterone also has a mood-elevating effect and also keeps levels of androgens (responsible for masculinisation) in check.

Several things can contribute to hormonal imbalances such as recycling oestrogen which has been used by the body instead of being detoxified by the liver.

Because female hormones compete

for the same precursor molecule as the stress hormone cortisol, the body often produces cortisol preferentially. Some women only become aware of an imbalance when they wish to conceive.

Excess oestrogen activity (relative to progesterone) can cause inflammation and growth and proliferation of uterine tissue can result in disorders such as fibroids and endometriosis.

Deficient progesterone activity can create mood disturbances and pre-menstrual symptoms that may result in tearfulness, anger, sadness, irritability or in more severe cases anxiety and depression. Physical symptoms include breast pain and fluid retention and can also be involved in fertility and recurrent miscarriage.

Deficient oestrogen activity typically occurs in mid-life, resulting in mood fluctuations or other commonly known menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, sweating, and skin thinning and wrinkling.

Results from blood tests can

often be conflicting as some tissues sequester hormones.

For example oestrogen levels in the breast tissue can be 50-100 times greater than normal while blood results fall in the normal range.

Naturopaths and medical herbalists will treat the underlying cause such as stress or impaired liver function and

may suggest diet and lifestyle changes to support hormone health.

Herbalists can prescribe herbs that subtlety modulate hormone levels when phytochemicals within the plant bind to hormone receptors. You don’t need to put up with any of these unpleasant symptoms. Act now to avoid further distress.

Kale, cabbage, cauliflower, cavolo nero, broccoli, broccolini and Brussel sprouts reach peak flavour when chilly weather causes their sugar content to rise.

All are descended from one plant species. The original brassica, Brassica oleracea (‘wild cabbage’) still grows wild on the limey cliffs of Europe, adapted to its harsh environment with thick fleshy leaves that store water and nutrients.

Chinese cabbages, mustard and kale are quick to grow as microgreens or slightly larger, as a ‘cut and-come-again’ crop. Snip the young leaves for a stir-fry or add them in the last few minutes to a slow cooked casserole.

Mustard is hot like wasabi and best in small doses, but the young leaves add a delicious tang to salads. Giant Red Mustard is often grown for its striking colour and form.

Kale and cavolo nero are the most similar to wild cabbage with a non-heading growth habit and heavily

Growing your greens for winter healthu Article supplied by www.gogardening.co.nz

Brassicas are among winter’s most powerful health foods, especially when you grow your own.

textured leaves. These excellent dark green vegetables are increasingly valued for their pungent flavour and highly nutritious leaves.

Globe cabbages, cauliflowers and Brussel sprouts take longer to reach maturity.

To grow them well you need deeply dug, well-drained soil with compost and lime added. Ideally they’re planted in autumn, early enough to be well established before the coldest weather slows their growth.

Young seedlings need protection from frost. Cloches and tunnel crop covers come in very handy at this time of year.

Broccoli is one green most children will eat and the superior flavour of home grown broccoli can be astounding.

Sprouting broccoli is a useful thing to have in the garden.

Plants carry on producing side shoots long after the central head has been picked. Regular picking encourages more to grow.

Reasons to grow and eat brassicas

• Brassicas eaten straight from the garden are the most nutritious, because the longer they hang around on shop shelves (or in the fridge), the more nutrients are lost.

• They’re packed with essential nutrients, including vitamins C (burns fat and purifies blood), K (strengthens the immune system), and B (for energy and healthy metabolism).

• They help prevent cancer and heart attacks.

• They assist with weight loss when included in a healthy diet.

• They promote healthy skin, eyes and muscle tone.

• They contain omega 3, essential fatty acids.

• Anthocyanin – the colour in red cabbage, is a powerful antioxidant believed to be helpful in preventing Alzheimer’s disease.
