The wind, one brilliant day, called . . .

The window of my office has a spectacular view. I over-look the parish garden, with St. John’s bell tower standing sentry on the garden’s far side. Half of the view is filled by a mature sugar maple, the largest I’ve ever encountered. This time of year the maple’s leaves are brilliant hues of red, orange, and gold. With each gust of wind leaves re-lease their grip on the tree, giving themselves freely to the breeze and covering the garden in an autumn blan-ket. The wind gusts often, and each time I hear the leaves flurry, the wind strikes me as a visitor. Today it reminds me of Antonio Machado’s poem:

The wind, one brilliant day, calledto my soul with an aroma of jasmine.

“In return for the aroma of jasmine,I’d like all the aroma of your roses.”

“I have no roses; all the flowersin my garden are dead.”

“Well then, I’ll take the withered petalsand the yellow leaves and the waters of the fountain.”

The wind left. And I wept. And I said to myself:“What have you done with the garden

that was entrusted to you?”

As we continue through this season of stewardship, our Sunday Gospel readings are variations on Machado’s theme. God graces us with a brilliant and multi-hued world, full of blessing. And we are continually visited by the Ruach—Spirit, Wind—of God who brings with her gifts but also expectations. When God’s Spirit approach-es and asks for the best of us, what will we give: the jewels that adorn the sugar maple, or petals withered? As we each discern our commitment to St. John’s of time, talent & treasure, may we ponder this question in our hearts.

Grace and peace,

The Reverend Barkley ThompsonRector

Stewardship Statements

by Jen Brothers

Ten years ago, before moving back to Roa-noke, I participated in a mission trip with St. George’s Episcopal Church, Nashville. About 25 youths and adults went to Hon-duras where we built a play set and held a Vacation Bible School for the children and teens living at Our Little Roses, a home for orphaned and rescued girls. The community of St. George’s had been traveling to this home for many years, and parishioners had become like extended family to the girls. We lavished love and small gifts on them and every day was a party filled with outings and fun. Hondu-ras is a country that views its children as a national treasure, so foreign adoption is not allowed-at least that is what we were told. Whether or not this information was true, it made leaving the country and the girls a bit easier. Halfway through our stay, I found myself watching several girls take turns roller skating around the inside of the walled compound. There was only one pair of skates in the home, and these skates belonged to one of the girls. I couldn’t believe it. One pair of roller skates in a home shared by forty girls? What struck me most was the ease with which this girl shared her skates. They were not com-munal skates, everyone acknowledged the skates belonged to her, but somehow this nine year-old knew it was more fun to share the experience than to hoard it-like the boy in John’s gospel who offered his five small barley loaves and two fish to feed the five thousand plus crowd. The

girls patiently awaited their turn, and the owner of the skates glowed with pleasure as she watched her friends take turns skating away on one of her precious few personal belongings. In the blink of an eye a tangi-ble image of the kingdom unfolded before me. In their poverty these girls were rich with community and love and simple, pure joy, and no one was more pleased with the experience than the giver herself. I was touched to the core with the knowledge that this is why God calls us to share with one another. Inxplicably, when we share the gifts in our lives we don’t have less but somehow more. Even when what we have to offer is as small as a pair of skates, God multiplies the gift and it works its way through our hearts like yeast expanding dough into fluffy bread. As I silently gave thanks to God for the vis-ible expression of God’s kingdom before me, I became uneasy. What I knew but the girls did not was that another well-mean-ing church group had set out to buy each girl in the home her very own bike. Just outside the walls of the home, a truck filled with shiny bikes awaited entrance. My re-sponse to this generous gift was conflicted. While I wanted the girls to experience the exhilarating rush of mounting their very own metal steeds and flying into the wind, I worried that their sharing community would begin to unravel as a new level of proprietorship would inevitably follow. If every girl had her own bike, there would no longer be a need to share. Would the unintended consequences of this generous gift disrupt the harmony and joy I saw lived out in the lives of these girls who valued each other more than their possessions? The question was and still is a difficult one for me to answer. I don’t know what happened after the girls got their bikes. I left Honduras shortly after they received their gifts, my hands and heart filled with memories of holy moments and haunting questions. What do I hold on to-what do I own-that limits my ability to live into the goodness of God’s kingdom?

Dr. Dan Matthews' topic "Scarcity Midst Abundance" so aptly described the blood supply nationwide. Thanks, however, to the wonderful donors who came to the Drive in October. 40 units were collected which will save and pro-tect so many lives. You and the team of volunteers are all saints in my book! -Carole Lougheed

Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. The kind of story that used to be the mate-rial of ballads (according to Publisher’s Weekly), this novel involves a journey, murder, a Christ-figure, and strange signs all around. “Everything is signifi-cant, everything has weight, and com-prehension is fleeting.” This national bestseller is sure to evoke great conver-sation.
