What’s Happening Around Town?

BFC Announces 2015 Volunteer of the Year

Charlottesville-based nonprofit Building Goodness Foundation (BGF) honored their Volunteer of the Year at the 2015 BGF Volunteer Celebration on Friday. The winner of the 2015 Skip Wootten Volunteer of the Year Award is local builder Robin Joslin.

Robin has been a dedicated BGF vol-unteer since 2011. He is a BGF Interna-tional Trip Leader and has volunteered on multiple international projects in Haiti and Nicaragua. As a plumbing and electric professional, Robin has helped with nearly every electrical sys-tem BGF has installed since 2011, pro-viding power to half a dozen buildings in developing communities. He also served as the Volunteer Project Manag-er for the Siuna Hospital in Nicaragua, and traveled to Nicaragua on four trips to provide water and electric to the hospital.

In the last year, Robin has dedicat-ed over 125 volunteer hours to BGF projects, including traveling to Haiti to install the electrical system at Ma-ranatha Secondary School. He vol-unteered locally through Building Goodness in April and has dedicat-ed numerous weekends and his own crews to building the new BGF office in Charlottesville. In addition to volun-teering on BGF job sites, Robin faith-fully supports BGF as an event sponsor for the Battle of the Bands.

Solar Energy Enterprise Named to Exclusive List of America’s Fastest Growing Companies

Charlottesville-based Sigora Solar was ranked 376 on the 34th annual Inc. 500 list as one of America’s fastest grow-ing companies, which was released in Inc. magazine’s September 2015 issue. This ranking, which places Sigora Solar as 8th among companies in the energy sector, also named the company as “The Cleanest” of those businesses that work in the field. As an Inc. 500 honoree, Sig-ora Solar shares a pedigree with compa-nies such as Patagonia, Microsoft, Go-Pro, Clif Bar, and Oracle.

“Our mission at Sigora is to provide the world with access to clean, reliable energy at a fair price,” says Andy Bin-dea, CEO. “And our strategy for ac-complishing this is to exceed customer expectations, invest in our employees, and reduce carbon emissions. While making the prestigious Inc. 500 list is an incredible honor, what’s especial-ly gratifying to those of us at Sigora is that our strategy is working. We’re making progress in our effort to get people to take responsibility for the energy they consume.”

Sigora was founded in 2011 with $4,000 and a staff of three people working out of the back of a Honda

Civic. Three years later, the staff has grown to 36 people, and revenue has increased from $237,000 to $3.2M in 2014. This growth reflects Bindea’s belief that a company can make money providing customers with solar energy while having a positive impact on the environment.

“We consider ourselves social en-trepreneurs, and that means our mis-sion extends beyond our local markets. That’s why,” Bindea says, “we launched Sigora Haiti in March 2015 and opened an office in Port-au-Prince. We have a ten-year plan to bring affordable, re-newable energy to 2.5 million people who lack reliable electricity. We’re starting with a 50-year power sup-ply agreement with the commune of Mole-Saint Nicholas to install prepaid meters. For the cost of one candle, our grid can supply 10 hours of energy.”

The Haiti project is costing Sigo-ra $2M, and the company still needs to raise $1.3M from investors. As the company continues to pursue its vision for Haiti, it will continue to increase business in its existing markets. Sigora plans to double its revenue to $7M for this fiscal year and open three more of-fices in Virginia. The company recently opened an office in Washington, D.C.

“I care about the people I serve, the people I work with, and the environ-ment that’s home to us all,” Bindea says. “Moving forward, the secret to our growth will stay the same: keep sales volume up and profit margins thin . . . and continue to make the world a better place to live.”

Tom Tom Announces Entertainment Lineup for Fall Block Party

Tom Tom’s annual Fall Block Party returns to Charlottesville this Septem-ber 25 and 26 with nearly one hundred art, craft, food, and drink vendors, set against a musical backdrop of indie rock, reggae, psychedelic funk, and elec-tronic jam. The event celebrates the lo-cal founders in Tom Tom’s “Founding Cville” program, assembles the creative and entrepreneurial organizations in the region, and excites Charlottesville for the Spring Founders Festival.

FRIDAY NIGHT BLOCK PARTYIX Art Park, 5-11 p.m. September 25th

Tom Tom’s signature Fall Block Party, which drew over 6,000 attend-ees in 2014, comes to the IX Art Park for a weekend of celebration just a few blocks from the heart of Downtown. This free, outdoor bash will feature folk rock, psychedelic funk, and elec-tronic jam as a part of the Levitt AMP Charlottesville Music Series, as well as dance performances, a craft beer gar-den with exclusive New Belgium drafts, and children’s activities. During the party, PsiKick will host a Tech Mixer with 30+ local technology firms, Hack-Cville will host entrepreneurial college students from around Virginia as a part of a Startup Trip, and the nine re-cipients of this year’s Founding CVille class will be honored.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON BLOCK PARTYIX Art Park, 12-7 p.m. September 26th

This day long event will feature the largest fleaVILLE ever, children’s activi-ties, food trucks, a beer garden serving exclusive New Belgium brews, a pub-lic mural painting, and six of the best bands Virginia has to offer. With music ranging from folk, to indie rock, to reg-gae, there is something for everyone.

Tom Tom Founders Festival is a 501c3 nonprofit that hosts nearly one hundred free events every year in Charlottesville, VA. Its mission is to catalyze the formation of new creative, civic, and entrepreneurial ventures. In Spring 2015, Tom Tom had attendance of over 26,000 and showcased 381 com-munity organizations. n

FEATU

RE

Classical music is Han-del’s Hallelujah Cho-rus and Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, you-can’t-quite-remember-‘em-but-you-know-you’ve-heard-em masterworks

that epitomize Western culture. Clas-sical music is Brooklyn Rider’s new, hippest-thing-going, Third World-in-fluenced compositions. Classical mu-sic is played in grand auditoriums for well-dressed audiences sitting quiet and still. Classical music is played for craft brew sipping Millennials and Gen X’ers in little basement clubs. Classical music is the stuff never played on elec-tric guitar – or so it used to be.

Classical music – a living tradition vast in its repertoire, varied in its ori-gins, instrumentation, settings and moods – is what Raphael Bell and Timothy Summers played together at Charlottesville High School, and what they return to play each fall with a host of globetrotting friends. Bell and Summers will be back in town Tues-day, September 8th through Sunday

September 20th for the 16th annual Charlottesville Chamber Music Fes-tival – six ticketed concerts and one free noontime performance. We are so lucky.

The Festival is but one reason so many homebuyers are attracted to Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. Ac-cording to a study by Americans for the Arts, artists and craftspeople, musi-cians and dancers, chefs and other cre-

ative folks in our midst generate $114.4 million in annual economic activity in the Charlottesville area, and $9.2 mil-lion in local and state government rev-enues. They also make this an exciting place to live.

“It’s easy for me to promote Charlottesville,” says REALTOR® John Updike, a music fan and a 30-year resi-dent. “I think we’ve maintained a good quality of life.” Besides UVA, culture

and the arts,e and great restaurants, Updike cites the city’s central location for its attractiveness to many homebuy-ers. “We’re three hours from the beach, two hours from D.C., 20 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway. D.C. residents tend to come down here because they get tired of the traffic up there.”

Cellist Bell and violinist Summers grew up here, studied at New York City’s prestigious Julliard School, and today enjoy busy and varied careers. Bell is principal cellist of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic in Belgium and co-Artistic Director of La Loingtaine, an arts center on the Loing River on the edge of the forest of Fontainebleau southeast of Paris. Summers is second violinist of the Orpheus String Quartet and a member of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, two celebrated ensembles which tour widely.

The Festival they began presenting in 2000 features a wide spectrum of chamber music – compositions written for relatively small ensembles – from old favorites with traditional instru-mentation to freshly composed exper-imental works for any instrument un-der the sun.

“Tim and Rafe always gather real-ly top-notch musicians and choose interesting music to play,” says vio-linist, orchestral leader and music educator Sharon Roffman. “They are great at finding compelling and acces-sible works that are perhaps a bit off the beaten path, not necessarily often played. So I always find my visits to Charlottesville incredibly rewarding in that I learn new music, I’m lucky to play with inspiring colleagues, and I feel nourished by the surrounding environment!”

“Tim Summers and Rafe Bell are both the kind of musicians I like,” says Matthew Hunt, one of Britain’s lead-ing clarinetists. “Neither of them ac-cept the expected or routine; both have a fresh and vital outlook on music, and through their programming, music making and the artists they invite, they ensure that the concerts are always pre-sented in full Technicolor.”

The 2015 Festival opens on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Paramount Theater, the 1931 mov-ie palace with a Greek Revival-influ-enced façade and a grand neo-classical interior, with a free 7:00 p.m. talk on the origins of chamber music and an 8:00 p.m. concert by Festival favorites Brooklyn Rider. Festival manager Joc-elyn Kelley calls Brooklyn Rider “the rock stars of chamber music.” Nation-al Public Radio credits the quartet with “recreating the 300-year-old form of string quartet as a vital and creative

21st-century ensemble.” Like Kronos Quartet before them, Brooklyn Rider has widened the audience for classical music, appealing to young listeners by focusing on contemporary music and cross-disciplinary collaborations.

This year the group will perform selections from The Brooklyn Rider Almanac, thirteen specially commis-sioned new works from such rock and jazz luminaries as Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, former Talking Heads front man David Byrne, and The Bad Plus pianist Ethan Iverson. Because exciting new music has roots in excit-ing old music, the group will close the concert with one of Franz Schubert’s late masterworks, the haunting String Quartet No. 13 in A minor, D.804, “Ro-samunde.”

The concert on Thursday, Septem-ber 10 at 8:00 p.m. at the Paramount will be devoted to 19th century clas-sics, beginning with Ludwig van Bee-thoven’s Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70, No. 1, “Ghost,” scored for piano, violin and cello. The work’s nickname alludes to its hushed, eerie second movement, perhaps inspired by Shake-speare’s Macbeth, on which Beethoven considered basing an opera. Frédéric Chopin’s Prelude, Op. 45, his Barca-rolle, Op. 60, and his Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp minor, Op. 39 will follow. The popular barcarolle form was inspired by the songs of Venetian gondoliers, and characterized by a rhythm evoking a gondolier’s stroke. Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25, No. 1, inspired by Hungarian “gypsy” folk music, rounds out the program.

The Festival’s annual free lunchtime concert appeals to the aficionado and the merely curious alike. This year’s one-hour performance takes place at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, September 11 at The Paramount with short, engaging works by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Fritz Kreisler, Gershwin/Heifetz and others. No tickets are required.

The Festival continues on Sunday, September 13 at 3:00 p.m. at the Uni-versity of Virginia’s stately Old Cabell Hall, designed for the south end of the Lawn in 1898 by Stanford White. Wolf-gang Amadeus Mozart’s Oboe Quartet in F major, K.370 (with violin, viola and cello) was written for a Munich virtuo-so playing on a newly improved instru-ment. British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage studied with Gunther Schull-er, known for his synthesis of classical music and jazz, and has been further in-fluenced by Miles Davis and other jazz greats. Turnage’s Cantilena, for oboe and string quartet, dates to 2001. Vien-nese composer Anton Bruckner is best known for his sprawling and complex

symphonies. But his String Quintet in F Major, WAB 112, composed for two vio-lins, two violas and cello, has been called “one of the most idiosyncratic but deep-est chamber works since Beethoven.”

The Festival moves back to the Paramount on Thursday, Septem-ber 17 at 8:00 p.m. with a program of unusually scored work from Russia, Hungary, Germany and Argentina, beginning with Hungarian composer Béla Bartók’s Duos for Two Violas. It continues with a composition entitled Mariel, by the Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov for marimba and cel-lo. Golijov’s first exposure to classical music was through his pianist mother, but at age ten he heard the great late 20th century tango composer Astor Piazzolla. “I could see not only life be-ing distilled into music, but also how Bach and Bartók could be transmuted into something that was vital to Ar-gentina at that moment, and into my life at that moment,” Golijov has said. He composed Mariel in 1999 in mem-ory of a friend: “I attempted to cap-ture that short instant before grief in which one learns of the sudden death of a friend who was full of life: a single moment frozen forever in one’s memo-ry, and which reverberates through the piece, among the waves and echoes of the Brazilian music that Mariel loved.”

Clarinetist Hunt calls the German composer Paul Hindemith’s Little Musical Flower Garden and Leipzigish Assortment for clarinet and bass “a touching and funny piece. Hindemith wrote it for himself and his wife to play, and aside from the occasional title, gives no indication of speed or dynamic, leaving such decisions to the performers. It’s rather like private cir-cus music.”

The Argentinian-born Alejandro Viñao, now a British citizen, begins Tumblers for violin, marimba and com-puter with a brief, simple rhythmic phrase, then develops it “through rhyth-mic processes that are more character-istic of the African, Latin American or Oriental traditions than of the serious music of Europe.” Like acrobatic tum-blers, the players “unfold the shifting rhythms in the vertigo of a pulse which changes with every step.” The program will close with Sergei Prokofiev’s Quin-tet in G minor, Op. 39 for a more famil-iar grouping of instruments: oboe, clar-inet, violin, viola and bass.

Music Fresh Squeezed is the Festi-val’s annual evening of contemporary music in a casual setting. Among the pieces to be featured at the year’s event on Friday, September 18 at 8:30 p.m. at the Southern Cafe and Music Hall is Charlottesville jazz trumpeter John D’earth’s ‘Natural Bridge,’ for piano trio, double bass and electric guitar. Natural Bridge is D’earth’s attempt to combine the languages and proce-dures of contemporary chamber mu-sic and “what is inadequately referred to as ‘jazz,’ he writes. “These worlds have not often co-mingled but in the

minds of those who love both worlds it seems, and sounds like, a natural combination.” The doors open for Music Fresh Squeezed at 6:30 p.m. Music begins at 8:30.

This year’s final concert takes place in Old Cabell Hall on Sunday, Septem-ber 20 at 3:00 p.m. Maurice Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello will open the program. Selections from D’earth’s Natural Bridge will be heard as well. Finnish composer Kalle Kalima’s Kata Heian Nidan was written for string or-chestra and first performed in 2013. The Festival will debut Kalima’s new arrangement of the piece, for an octet consisting of two violins, two cellos, pi-ano, electric guitar, clarinet and double bass. “Kata” is a Japanese word “describ-ing detailed choreographic patterns of movements practiced either solo or in pairs,” Kalima explains. “In Shotokan Karate, which comes from Okinawa in Japan, Kata is often described as a set sequence of karate movements orga-nized into a pre-arranged fight against imaginary opponents. The third Kata in Shotokan karate is called ‘Heian Ni-dan,’ Heian meaning peace in Japanese. This Kata with its 26 movements has been the inspiration for my composi-tion. The composition is my critical stand against the recent violence close by my home in Berlin, Alexanderplatz, where innocent bystanders where beat-en to death by youth gangs.”

Hunt calls Olivier Messaien’s Quar-tet for the End of Time, for clarinet, violin, cello and piano, “an astonishing work that dares to dream of the high-est beauty, all the more extraordinary for the fact it was written by a prisoner of war during World War II. This is less a concert piece, more a total immer-sion experience where Messaien plays with the theme of time; its measure, speed and effect. His start point is a passage from the book of revelation, the appearance of the fearsome angel who announces the end of time.”

Besides presenting an annual con-cert season, Summers and Bell’s Virgin-ia Chamber Music Foundation fosters a greater appreciation and understand-ing of classical music, providing free concert tickets to select schools, class-es, and community groups, and offer-ing free interactive musical outreach programs at schools and educational centers in the city and surrounding counties. The Festival also donates free tickets to ParadeRest, a local organiza-tion that thanks and welcomes home veterans and their families by provid-ing tickets to cultural and sporting events. Central Virginia loves the arts – Bell and Summers are two big reasons why. n

Buying a home is perhaps the single biggest purchase most Americans will ever make. In fact, it is essential that you learn all that you can about the purchasing process, and that begins with knowing your credit score and the op-tions that are available to you as a new or existing home-

owner. If you believe that your major hurdle to homeownership is the lack of a good credit score and a substantial down payment, then you should take the necessary steps to get your credit under control and purchase the home that you deserve.

Borrowers Perception of Credit Scores

In the second annual report How America Views Homeownership, conduct-ed by Wells Fargo and Ipsos Public, consumers’ perception of what they can and can’t afford is completely off base when it comes to their credit score. The report reveals that two-thirds of those surveyed believe that they need a credit score over 780, which is con-sidered excellent, in order to qualify for a mortgage loan. Although a score of 780 and above is impressive, there are multiple credit score models and investor guidelines that a professional lender knows can help a potential buy-er qualify for a home mortgage. Matt Hodges, Charlottesville Sales Manager and Loan Officer at Presidential Mort-gage Group, doesn’t necessarily view scores as good or bad, but rather con-sequences to the borrower. For exam-ple, if a potential borrower has a credit score that is below 680 and they are applying for a $200,000 conventional Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae loan that requires a score of 740 or above, they can expect to pay $5,000 more or 2.5 percent of the loan value. Although a potential buyer still qualifies, they will pay significantly more, he adds.

If you know that your credit score has some blemishes and your goal is to become a homeowner, Carl Heimlich, Branch Manager at American Equi-ty Mortgage, suggests that you work

directly with a professional lender. Although you can obtain a free annu-al report from places like freecred-itreport.com or annualcreditreport.com, having a lender pull the report from the three trade agencies: Experi-an, Equifax and Trans Union, is con-servatively scored and provides a more detailed representation of your credit history, according to Heimlich. In ad-dition, Heimlich also warns against having multiple people or lenders pull your credit report, because it shows as an inquiry and could have a negative impact depending on the circumstanc-es. Furthermore, Hodges says that al-

though the free credit report will give the borrower a general idea of whether anything is inaccurate in their report, it isn’t necessarily a mortgage model. “That free credit report is only one of 40 plus models that are out there,” he says. “So, if someone is looking to purchase a home, having a mortgage professional pull a credit report is the best represen-tative scoring for a future loan.”

Practical Things to Do to Clean Up Your Credit

According to Heimlich, there are some basic steps to achieving a better credit score. First, pay your bills on time. For example, if you are a renter

or homeowner, your cred-it report should reflect a 12-month history of consis-tent payments with no late

fees. Second, don’t open or close any new accounts as doing so could sig-nificantly impact your score. Third, keep balances on your revolving cred-it such as credit cards. However, you don’t want to carry a balance of more than 30 to 50 percent of whatever the high credit limit is. For example, if you have a credit card limit of $1,000, you would want to pay down your balance to about $300 or $400. And, lastly, you want to actually use credit. It is a good idea to have at least three credit lines such as a car loan and a couple of cred-it cards, adds Heimlich. In addition, if there are any judgments or collections on your report, they may have to be paid off.

How Long Does It Take to See Improvement

The timeline to improving your credit differs for each individual and depends on the circumstances. In some cases it could take 35 to 90 days, or even up to 12 months depending on how complicated the process is. According to Hodges, creditors generally report to the three bureaus every month. Howev-er, there is some lag time when it actu-ally hits the live credit report. So, if the consumer takes on the task of clearing up their reports, it could take about 60 days before the credit report is actual-ly updated. In addition, many lenders have the capacity to do what Hodges refers to as “rapid rescores.” This pro-prietary product allows lenders and/or mortgage companies the ability to get credit corrected and then rescored in as little as 72 hours or three busi-ness days. Furthermore, the Fair Credit Reporting Act governs how mortgage professionals work with inaccuracies in credit reports, ensuring that they are not structuring a loan or doing credit repair, but rather clearing up errone-ous information on the report.

You Deserve HomeownershipStarting your journey to homeown-

ership begins with improving your credit score. And how you accom-plish this can take some planning to achieve. Remember that a low cred-it score is not the end of the world. There are many loan options for every consumer. With a little patience, con-sistency, and time your credit score will improve and homeownership will become a true reality. n
