What’s Happening Around Town?Big Brothers Big Sisters Night at the Charlottesville TomSox

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Cen-tral Blue Ridge (BBBS) invites the com-munity to come out and celebrate the perfect Triple—BBBS, the TomSox and Father’s Day! On Sunday, June 21, 2015, the TomSox will take on the New Mar-ket Rebels at 7pm with festivities begin-ning at 5pm at the Charlottesville High School baseball field. Food will be avail-able for purchase from local food trucks and participants will enjoy musical en-tertainment by Rob Cheatham. Bigs (mentors), Littles (youth) and their fam-ilies will be treated to a special VIP expe-rience, including dinner, under the VIP Tent and reserved seating to “root, root, root for the home team”. One lucky Big and Little will even get to throw out the first pitch! Community tickets start at $2 per person and can be purchased online at www.tomsox.com. A small portion of the night’s proceeds will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In 2014, 100% of the children en-rolled in the BBBS program reported improved scholastic competence, 100% progressed to the next grade level on-time, and 94% reported a greater confi-dence to achieve their goals despite the barriers they face.

Moving Beyond Ordinary Wellness: A New Paradigm for Full-Spectrum Living

What is wellness? The word “well-ness” is used by many people and orga-nizations, especially since the sharp rise in healthcare costs, diabetes and obe-sity during the past decade. Wellness has a history of being defined within a disease framework, meaning reducing health risks and preventing disease. Those are good goals, but they’re based on an outdated vision. A new vision was articulated by a few innovators, in-cluding Wellness Inventory creator, Dr. John W. Travis, MD. Dr. Travis is one of the keynote speakers at a two-day event entitled, “Moving Beyond Or-dinary Wellness: A New Paradigm for Full-Spectrum Living,” held at Unity of Charlottesville, 2825 Hydraulic Cir-cle, on Friday, June 26 from 7-9 p.m., and Saturday, June 27 from 10:00—4:30 p.m. It is for both helping professionals and anyone interested in personal well-being.

The event is sponsored by Hy-geia Health Services, UVA Compas-sionate Care Initiative and Unity of Charlottesville, with support from Re-becca’s Natural food and Maya Restau-rant. Joining Dr. JW Travis are Jim Dykes, MD, Duke-trained Integrative Health Coach; Susanna Williams, PhD, researcher and faculty member of the UVA Mindfulness Center, and Rev. Pa-tricia Gulino Lansky, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, therapist and co-minis-ter of Unity.

“The health sciences recognize that wellness is not just about prevention and healing symptoms; optimum health is also possible, “said Cynthia Moore, director of Hygeia Health Ser-vices and one of the event organizers. “We continue to gain a deeper under-standing of the efficient flow of energy within us, and with each other, that is essential for full-spectrum living- and that includes all areas of life and all as-pects of a person’s mind, body, spirit, emotions and environment.”

Dr. Travis was a resident in preven-tive medicine at Johns Hopkins and serving in the US Public Health Ser-vice when he chose to dedicate his life to “teaching people to be well” rather than to treating patients. Recognized as one of the founders of the modern wellness movement, he opened the first wellness center in the U.S. in 1975, and co-authored the Wellness Workbook, recognized as a classic text in the well-ness field.

Experts at the “Beyond Ordinary Wellness” seminar will explore topics such as: The 12 Dimensions of Well-ness; The Role of Mindfulness and its Connection to Health and Wellbeing; Ending the Epidemic of Disappearing Dads—the Impact on Public Health; Embracing Life Fully through the End of Life; and Personal Wellbeing Strat-egies. There will also be experiential breakout sessions. The price for both days is $60 per person with scholarship benefits for UVA nursing students. Fri-day evening only is $15 per person.

Golf courses also add an aesthet-ic element to a community. Devils Knob, the highest course in Virginia. Not only is it much (12 to 18 degrees) cooler up there in July and August, but it has what he called “amazing views.” He suggests even if you aren’t a great golfer, bring your clubs and enjoy the view while you play. Devils Knob is a private 18-hole course open to property owners and their guests, or to guests of the Winter-green resort.

Chase explained that as part of the Wintergreen lifestyle there is also a “highly regarded” tennis center that reviewers have given “top marks.” In 2010, Tennis Magazine called it “the #1 resort for families.” This quality of amenity brings even more people to the area, some of whom may eventually become second homeowners or decide to enjoy Wintergreen full time.

Old Trail is also home to swimming pools, great restaurants, a salon, walking trails, ponds, dentist and doctor offices, the Lodge at Old Trail (serving a wide range of needs), retail shops, ACAC, a Club House and in the very near fu-ture, a new hotel.”

Old Trail is also where golf pro Kan-di Comer has her popular academy that offers instruction to all ages start-ing with very young children. Named one of the top five teachers in the state of Virginia by Golf Digest, Comer offers a range of instruction from individu-al coaching to golf clinics, after school programs and team golf. Guthrie ex-plained that since she is affiliated with a public course like Old Trail, a golf pro like Comer will attract lots of new people who may then ultimately be-come homeowners there

Another notable golf course com-munity in our area is Spring Creek at Zion Crossroads, which regularly wins recognition as one of the top courses in the country. Most recently Golf Digest rated it #55 on its 2015 list of Ameri-ca’s greatest public courses. A recent addition to the lifestyle there is a club house with a restaurant that is open to the public and offers what Dan Gi-rouard with Spring Creek Realty calls “great specials,” including prime rib every Friday night and Sunday brunch. Of course this community also has a

list of other amenities such as walking trails, a fitness facility, and tennis.

Golf Course Lots Bring a Premium

While there are many reasons to live in a home adjacent to a golf course, do they have sufficient appeal to translate into a higher price on your home?

Most agents say the answer is yes, and this is supported by research. For example, a 2007 study of 305 trans-actions in a neighborhood in College Station, Texas found homes on golf course lots sold for almost 26 percent more than other homes in the subdivi-sion and the price decreased with dis-tance from the country club.

Local agents are in agreement that these lots are more valuable. “There is definitely a premium on golf course lots because there is no one behind you and you don’t have the maintenance,” Guthrie said. He did offer the advice that non-golfers should take a golfing friend with them when they shop for homes right on the course. The golfers will recognize the areas where there are likely to be a lot of errant balls that could damage your siding. On the oth-er hand, just 150 feet more or less to either side could be very safe. He also cautioned that if you like quiet, you would be advised not to buy near a tee box, the starting point for each hole, where “laughing and talking are pretty much the norm.”

buyers to the area, explained Bo Newell with Mountain Area Realty in Nellys-ford. Golfers add an extra measure of demand for housing there that helps maintain property values. He believes golf course lots may have a premium of as much as 25 percent, which is right in line with the findings of the Texas study. Add to that a spectacular view such as you find on the mountain in Wintergreen and that premium could well be much higher.

The availability of public courses such as the ones at Stoney Creek or Old Trail can also impact values in neighborhoods outside of the subdivi-sion where they are located since golf-ers don’t have to live in the communi-ty to play there. In other words, the course becomes an asset for the whole area, not just the neighborhood where it is located.

The Market in Golf Course Communities

Golf course communities are re-bounding like other parts of the real estate market. Girouard reported that in Spring Creek homes are selling more quickly with fewer days on the market than a year ago. The active resale mar-ket also means inventory is limited. The other good news is that new con-

struction has picked up with several new builders hard at work there.

Kent reports that “we have been happy to sell out the vast majority of homes we have offered that back up to Old Trail’s golf course, which is a testa-ment to the draw of living near such a nice course in a beautiful setting.”

Recently there have been major re-pairs to Lake Monticello’s semi-pri-vate course that sustained damage due to extreme heat five years ago and, Guthrie said, “It is back in nice shape.” Thanks to these renovations, the Faul-coner Invitational Golf Tournament returned there after a brief hiatus due to the damage. Over the next several years the renovated course should at-tract buyers, which in turn could bring appreciation in the property values when some of them decide to move in, Guthrie explained.

In a recent report conducted by the National Association of REALTORS®, green homes are popular among recent home buyers. What does this have to do with green kitchen counter-tops? Plenty, if you’re a home-owner in the process of upgrad-ing your kitchen design in the hopes of selling your property

in the near future. According to the report, Millennials comprised the larg-est share of home buyers at 32 percent, larger than baby boomers combined – and 68 percent of them were first-time home buyers. Whether you’re in the planning stages of building a new home - or just giving an existing one a new facelift, here are three eco-friendly choices you should consider for your kitchen design.

Recycled Paper It might seem strange to consider

using paper for a kitchen countertop. Greenamerica.org states that using re-cycled paper is better for the environ-ment because it reduces solid waste; it preserves forests and reduces demand for wood, and it conserves resources and generates less pollution during manufacturing. When the fiber from paper is bound with resin, it makes a surface that is durable and easy to care for. PaperStone® is a Forest Steward-

ship Council (FSC©) certified brand made from 100 percent post-consum-er recycled paper and non-petroleum resin. This material has the strength of steel and is produced in a socially responsible manner. One major ben-efit of using recycled paper is that it reduces the number of trees cut down to make paper, thereby decreasing the overall demand for wood. Because of its durability, using recycled paper pro-vides peace of mind for the environ-mentally conscious homeowner.

Recycled GlassAccording to the Glass Packaging

Institute (GPI), glass is 100 percent re-cyclable and can be recycled endlessly without any loss in purity or quality. In addition, GPI claims that over a ton

of natural resources are saved for every ton of glass recycled. Because recycled glass can be substituted for up to 95 percent of raw materials, it’s an ideal green choice for designing or remodel-ing kitchen countertops. The brand Ve-trazzo® makes countertops that are 85 percent recycled glass, and composed of a proprietary formula that com-bines recycled glass with a binder of cement, additives, pigments and other recycled materials. The great benefit of using recycled glass is that it’s equal in durability, strength, thermal resis-tance, scratch resistance, and care and maintenance to granite or other natu-ral stone surfaces used, making it one of the most environmentally- friendly materials on the market.

Reclaimed WoodFor homeowners seeking a more

rustic, historical or traditional charac-ter for their kitchen, reclaimed wood is a popular design choice. It’s lumber with a past life used for a new purpose. Reclaimed wood can be purchased through a local salvage supplier or through a manufacturer that uses re-claimed materials. It’s not uncommon to learn that your new kitchen coun-tertop was once an old barn, factory, warehouse, commercial building, or even a storage crate. Unfortunately, many dealers make false claims about how their products are sourced, which is why you should purchase from deal-ers who are certified through the For-est Stewardship Council (FSC©) or the Rainforest Alliance. Endurawood is one product that meets this stan-dard. In fact, their wood countertops are made from reclaimed fir trees be-longing to the pine family and oak, in addition to old wine vats (containers). If you decide to use fashion wood for a kitchen countertop, keep in mind that it’s prone to water damage, will need occasional re-sealing, and probably shouldn’t be installed directly next to a sink or dishwasher. If you’re going for an aged-looking kitchen design, using reclaimed wood is a better eco-friendly choice.

Remodeling your kitchen counter-tops can be a worthwhile undertaking, and going green is the smarter option. Nowadays, sustainable green materials are just as durable and attractive as tradi-tional countertops like quartz or granite. Frankly, with the emerging demand for green and energy efficient homes, choos-ing eco-friendly materials when remod-eling or building your new home is one way to make sure that you’re contribut-ing to sustaining resources, and protect-ing the environment n
