apartment every Friday night for "lone soldiers " as the youngmen and women who travel from foreign countries to serve in theIsraeli army are known.

Typically, 20 or 30 of the soldiers join the Johnsons f or atraditional meal and wine and to join in a rousing rendition of "Shalom Aleichem ," an old Hebrew song sung to greet theSabbath day of rest. The Johnsons, however, are not Jewish . They are evangelicalChristians who live in Israel full-time, operating a U.S.-based 501c(3) nonprofit , the Ser vants to Christ Corp.

Servants to Christ is one of scores of evangelical Christianorga nizations working in Israel on a variety of charitablemissions . And its presence is just one example of the increasingly tight embrace of the Jewish state by both the leadership of American evangelical churches and organizations and their grass-roots sup porters .

Pro-Israel rhetoric fueled in part by increasing tensions in the Middle East over Iran's nuclear program and the threat itmight pose to the Je wish state is a staple of many U.S.evangelical leaders ' speeches and sermons.

It has likewise become a popular refrain among GOP presidentialcandidates looking to shore up their support with the party'sconservative religious wing .

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich , for example,recently made comments calling the Palestinians an"invented people" and has said he would support Israel if itdecided to attack Iran .

Israel asks US for arms that could aid Iran strike

Richard Land , president of the Southern Baptist Convention 'sEthics and Religious Liberty Commission, said such staunchsupport for Israel is fundamental to the evangelical movement .

" American evangelicals have it in their DNA: God blesses those who bless the Jews and curses whoever curses the Jews ," hesaid. "We want God to bless America and if America doesn'tsupport Israel we don't have his blessing. It doesn't mean Israel isalways right, it doesn't mean we don't remonstrate Israel , but weare going to have their back ." ~ Richard Land

War for American hearts and minds rages over Islam

That broad backing for Israel is in part grounded in a widely held evangelical belief that the existence of a Jewish state is aprerequisite for the sec ond coming of Jesus.

Many evangelicals believe that when Jesus returns, it will be toIsrael. The purpose of his Second Coming will be to destroy itsenemies and r eturn to heaven with his followers in what is variously called the Rapture or the End Times .

'Islamaphobic'

Under this interpreta tion of the Book of Revelation, the Rapture can't happen if there is no Jewish state in the Holy Land.

But critics including some within the evangelical movementitself say that such devout allegiance to Israel is also beingdriven by a more worldly concern: fear of Islam .

"We definitely believe they ( U.S. evangelical leaders ) areIslamaphobic and that is hindering them from having the right approach toward Islam ," said Munther Isaac, an instructor atBethlehem Bible College who describes himself on his blog as aPalestinian evangelical Christian.

Obama accuses GOP critics of 'beating the drums of war'in Mideast

Isaac is a co-organizer of a five-day conference that beganMonday in Bethlehem titled " Christ at the Checkpoint ." The goalof the event, which is expected to draw up to 600 people, is "toequip the global church to understand Scripture as it relates to thePalestinian context , and to discuss the theological importance of Peace and Justice in an evangelical context ." Among the lectureson the agenda is one titled " Loving the Muslim ."

Isaac, 32 , said many evangelicals and politicians who court themoften make no distinction between radical Islam and the religion'smainstream: "The more we demonize Islam in our talks, in our books, in our sermons, the more we polarize them it's likefeeding the enemy and empowering the more radical voice, and we shouldn't do that."

But Land, of the Southern Baptist Convention, criticized what hereferred to as "replacement theologians" within the evangelicalmovement who do not see the creation of the state of Israel as anact of divine intervention .

"Unfortunately, many people in the replacement theology crowd seem to give moral equivalence to Israel and her enemies and wedo not see moral equivalence ," Land said.

He also rejected the notion that Islamaphobia plays any role inevangelical support for Israel , ticking off numerous deadly attacks perpetrated by Muslim extremists against Americans and others,including the 2009 Fort Hood shooting in Texas and the Sept. 11terrorist attacks .

American Muslims come of age in post-9/11 era

"There is a dangerous cult loose within Islam called Wahhabism,and it's cal led Jihadism," he said . "It needs to be confronted for what it is and it needs to be defeated. When people are trying tokill you it's not Islamaphobic, it's reality ."

Others are more direct in their criticism of Isaac and otherorganizers of the Christ at the Checkpoint conference.

"We think our support for Israel is a positive response from theheart , not out of a diagnosed or supposed phobia ," said DavidParsons, a spokesman for the International Christian Embassy inJerusalem , a nonprofit evangelical ministry . He called t he Christat the Checkpoint organizers " misguided " and " dishonest ."

"They've not been honest about why the wall and the checkpoints are there, and they downplay the terrorists ' threats to Israel , andthey downplay the persecution of Palestinian Christians by theirMuslim neighbors," Parsons said.

Mistrust of Islam and its ad herents within the evangelicalmovement is well documented . A survey published last year by the Pew Center Forum on Public Life indicated that 67 percent of more than 2,200 evangelical leaders surveyed expressed anunfavorable view of Islam and that 47 percent considered Islam to be a " major threat " to Christianity.

But many evangelical Christian Zionists point to the curre ntescalation of tensions between Israel and Iran , which Israel says istrying to develop nuclear weapons, as well as the political tumultand violence in the Middle East arising from the continuing ArabSpring uprisings, as legitimate reasons to be concerned.

Muslim-Americans: Good riddance to bin Laden

Rebecca Brimmer, chief executive and president of Bridges forPeace, a Jerusalem-based evangelical group that operates thelargest food drive in the country, said: "I don't hate any people orgroup. But , it's like with ( Iranian President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad saying hateful things if I quote what Ahmadinejad says, does that mean I am Islamaphobic ? Or does itmean I am a realist that says this is what this man is saying and we should pay attention." Ahmadinejad has been quoted as callingfor the destruction of Israel .

That sentiment has spilled over into broader forums.Conservative American political commentator Glenn Beck last year organized a gathering of more than 3,000 people in theancient Israeli city of Ceasaria for what he called a "RestoringCourage" tour intended to highlight concerns that pro- Islamist governments were springing up throughout the Middle East andnorth Africa in the wake of last year's "Arab Spring" revolts. WhileBeck is Mormon, the event drew a heavily evangelical crowd andfeatured evangelical pastor John C. Hagee as a keynote speaker .

Republicans could give Obama green light on Iran

Hagee , a Texas minister and the founder of Christians United forIsrael , re vved up the cro wd with these words: "People of Israel , wehave come from America and the nations of the world as people of faith. God is with you. Fifty million evangelicals in America are with you. This time in history you are not alone. ... Your enemiesare our enemies, and y our fight is our fight. We are united, and we will prevail ."

The belief that a military conflict between Israel and Iran iscoming e xplains why many evange lical Christians , like theJohnsons , are also b ig supporters of the Friends of the IDF (the Israeli Defense Forces , a charit able organization providingassistance to Israeli soldiers .

Pizza in the trenches

Scott Johnson , who calls himself an ardent " Christian Zionist ,"says he is not ashamed to take sides . During the Lebanon war in2006, the Johnsons to ok a van an d w ent to Ramban Hospital i nHaifa to pick up wounded s oldiers and return the m to theirhomes. They also went to the Lebanon border and delivered pizza,falafel and shawarma to Israeli soldiers in the trenches. And onseveral occasions they have hosted barbecues on their terrace forentire units of the IDF .

"I believe Islam is a threat to the world . It's a threat to decent,moral human beings . Not 100 percent of them, but the ones incontr ol," Scott Johnson said.

Observers say evangelical support for Israel gained momentumafter Israel 's Six Day War in 1967 against Syria, Jordan an d Egypt.

Many evangelicals viewed Israel 's victory against its Soviet-backed Arab neighbors with admiration, reminiscent of the biblical story of David , the future king of Israel , defeating gigantic Philistine warrior Goliath.

Atheist billboard hits snag in Jewish neighborhood

In 1980 , after the international community condemned Israel fordeclaring Jerusalem the "eternal and indivisible capital" of theJewish state and 13 nations shifted their embassies to Tel Aviv,Christian Zionists established the International ChristianEmbassy in Jerusalem, to show their support for the Jewish state .

During the 1980s, the Israeli government began to organize all-expen ses-paid "famili arization" tours of the Holy Land forevangelical pastors in an effort to cement su ch support.

Evangelical Christian Mission trips and humanitarian tourscontinue today, giving the country not only moral support but alsoa nice economic boost . During the Jewish holiday of Sukkot , forexample, roughly 5,000 evangelicals visit Israel as part of theChristian celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles , and 60 percentof Israel 's 2.8 million tourists last year were Christian pilgrims,according to the Ministry of Tourism.

Historically, some Israelis have been suspicious of Christiangroups inside the country, worrying that their aim is to convertJews to Christianity. But given their staunch political support forIsrael in recent years, most Israeli politicians now welcome them.

Those false teachers St. Paul is speaking of (above) had been visiting the newChristian churches in Galatia; churches St. Paul himself had recently founded, havingbrought the gospel (the good news) to the peoples of Galatia (to Jews, first; then toGentiles). Those false teachers had brought a very deceptive teaching into the youngchurches; a poisonous doctrinal mixture of the LIBERATING Gospel of Grace, whichcomes to us (Jews and Gentiles) only through G ods own Son: Jesus Christ, which hadbeen (deceptively) mixed together with the CONDEMNING Law of Moses, which nullifiedfor them t he gospel of gr ace, mercy, and forgiveness.

St. Paul had proclaimed the good news of love, mercy, hope, and forgiveness to theJews at the synagogues in Galatia and many of them had believed in Jesus Christ, who,as St Paul proclaimed, was the promised and long-awaited Messiah of God, which wasspoken of by Moses and the Prophets, and was, in fact, the fulfillment of the Law andthe Prophets: Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I havenot come to abolish them but to fulfill them (Matthew. 5:17).

Those false teachers, who were so eager to win the favor of the (new) Christian Jewsin Galatia, had followed on hot-on-the-heals of St. Paul, once he had left Galatia. Afterhaving established new Christian churches there, teaching in the Jewish synagogues, StPaul moved on to take the Gospel into other places. Those false teachers, once St.Paul had left Galatia, moved in with their false teachings of keeping the Law of Moses,

in every minute detail, seeking to establish their own righteousness, commingling withthe Gospel of Grace, which was not-at-all the same, liberating good news St Paul hadproclaimed to the Jews in Galatia. It was, in fact: a perversion of the gospel .

I am astonished that you [Galatians] are so quickly deserting him [God] who called youin the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospelnot that there is anotherone, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. Buteven if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the onewe preach ed to you, let him be acc ursed. As we have said before, so now I say again:If anyone i s preaching to you a gos pel con trary to the one you received, let him beaccursed (Galatians 1: 6-9).

This different gos pel, which S t Pau l was spea king of (abo ve) is not a gospel (i.e., goodnews), was a dist ortion of the gospel of Christ, and St P aul proclaime d a curse upon

those false teacher s, who had crept into th e syna gogues of Gala tia and were puttingGod to the test by placing a yoke upon the necks of the new Jewish Christian s, whichneither their fathers nor they were able to bear. This, as St. Paul told them, is contraryto the message he had proclaimed to them: that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus (see also: Acts 15:1-21).

Those false teachers were (and are, today, in America) known as Judaizers (Greek:Ioudaizo, meaning: to adopt Jewish customs ; see: Galatians 2:14) and were a party of Jewish Christians in the Early Church, who taught that circumcision and theobservance of the Mosaic Law were necessary for salvation and in consequence wishedto impose them on the Gentile converts, or who at least considered them as stillobligatory on the Jewish Christians (see: here) .

St. Paul wrote to the Jewish Christians in Galatia (which is why we have his letter)today, in order to explain to them the error of those false teachers who wereattempting to place the old yoke of the Law of Moses upon these new Christians, notlong after St. Paul had left Galatia, explaining to them: We ourselves are Jews by birthand not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a perso n is not justified by works of the law

but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law noone will be justified. (Galatians 2:15-16).

By works of the law no one will be justified. THIS was St. Pauls gospel message,concerning the Law of Moses to the Jewish Christians in Galatia. Those false teachers,the Judaizers, were teaching the Galatians they were justified, or made right with God,by the works of the Law of Moses, and not by faith in Jesus Christ.

Althou gh many might imagine the false teachings of the Judaizers of St. Pauls day longdead and forgotten, this is not at all the case. Those fal se teachers and their falseteach ings, which are contrary to God and the Gospel of Grace in Jesus Christ, are aliveand w ell today in the form of what is known as Judaized Christianity , or: Christian Zionism.

This post is dedicated to my fellow American veterans, active duty, National Guard, andreserve members of the US armed forces who have been wounded, killed, and aremissing in action, because they heeded the call of duty. They have made the ultimatesacrifices, so that we might live free. Let us never allow their sacrifices, and those of their families and friends, to be in vain, but rather let us follow their example. May theyfind peace and rest in the eternal embrace of Gods unfathomable love. Andrew Adler, the owner of local publication the Atlanta Jewish Times, hasapologized after suggesting that assassinating President Barack Obama is anoption that should be considered by the Israeli government.

As reported by Gawker, Adlers article, written earlier this month, describes the urgencyin protecting the Israeli people from threats such as Hamas and Hezbollah and argues

that there are essentially only three options available to Israel: 1. attack Hezbollah andHamas; 2. order the destruction of Irans nuclear facilities at all costs; 3. assassinateObama.

Clancy-type scenario, dont you think that this almost unfathomable idea hasbeen discussed in Israels most inner circles?

Another way of putt ing three in perspective goes something like this: Howfar would you go to save a nation comprised of seven million lives Jews,Christians and Arabs alike?

You have got to believe, like I do, that all options are on the table.

In a subsequent interview with Gawker, Adler seemed hesitant to stand by his words,saying he had written them just to see what kind of reaction I would get fromreaders.
