Forget Basketball: Try Melbourne Social Netball for a Different Athletic Challenge

Basketball is a game that’s been around for as long as anyone

can remember. As soon as a child is able to grip a basketball in

his two small hands, the primary instinct is always to eitherthrow the ball towards something at a respectable distance or to

drop it to the ground and attempt a crude dribble to keep it

moving. When the child is old enough to be able to perform the

rudimentary skills required by the game, all it takes is a ball and

a hoop installed in the backyard to start his after-school rituals

of throwing a few hoops.

In the 1890s, however, women seeking to play the game took

steps to modify the rules to allow them to comfortably engage inthe sport (while wearing the allowed attire at the time, which

translated to long dresses with long sleeves). Melbourne social

netball is the present form of this sport, which has travelled from the United States to England and

to the rest of the countries in the British Empire. It is now a popular athletic activity among young

people and adults alike all over Australia.

Players already used to performing basketball drills will already have a basic idea of the skills

needed for the sport — running or sprinting, suddenly making changes in direction, marking

opponents, passing the ball to a teammate, and attacking and defending the team goal are the

essential moves and can be practised on common level grounds.

Compared to basketball, netball is less strenuous for its players. Most of the players will be restricted

to their specific position’s assigned one thirds of the pitch. Generally, players in the goal shooter and

goal attack positions are the only ones allowed to score goals. A goal means shooting the ball

through a hoop attached to a pole standing 3.1 metres.

Melbourne social netball provides a good leg and cardiovascular workout with all the running and

sprinting involved in a standard court that is 100 feet long and 50 feet wide. Shooting and leaping for

the ball develops the upper body, while making quick changes in direction improves agility and

overall flexibility on the court.

While the sport was originally designed for girls and women, there are now plenty of mixed teams

that include men and boys, especially in the indoor arena. Interested individuals can visit their local

sports centres to sign up for a team or a competition that they can join with a team made up of their

friends. Netball is a healthy and productive team activity that offers plenty of physical and social

benefits, so why not give it a try with your mates? Challenge yourself with a new sport and get into

the team spirit.

Circuit Training for Improved Melbourne Social Netball Skills

Anyone seeking to join an athletic team and play a sport needs

to make the appropriate preparations. Even serious runners, for

example, cannot say that they can start running anytime they

please. A certain level of physical fitness is required in any

sport, and there are several strengthening and conditioning

exercises that can help an individual achieve general fitness

and perform better at a specific sport.

Likewise, people wanting to play netball will need to undergo

specific training to help them play the game better. Circuit

training is one of the best ways a player can physically prepare

himself for a game of Melbourne social netball. A player would

need to go through eight to ten stations featuring different types

of exercise; he would have to work at each station for a

specified amount of time followed by a short period of rest

before moving on to the next. The stations may feature either a

variety of fitness exercises or drills for movements specific tothe sport.

As in any sport, training exercises help improve a person’s overall physical fitness and hone the

specific skills needed in their particular sport and playing position. After experiencing regular

workouts, Melbourne social netball players will feel themselves getting stronger, faster, and sharper

for the game.

For general fitness, players can work through stations of sit-ups, push-ups, footwork practice, and

running on mats. Circuit training, on the other hand, can improve sprint agility and anaerobic

endurance, two important skills which are valuable to netball players. The game involves runningaround a court that measures 50 by 100 feet, making quick changes in direction, and sprinting short

distances, so leg strength, flexibility, and agility must be developed to help players move without

difficulty.

Passing the ball is an important feature of netball; players are not allowed to dribble the ball, like in

basketball, so passes must be made by simply throwing the ball over to a fellow team member.

Netball passes include the chest pass, high pass, and bounce pass, and all these can be included in

a player’s training to help develop arm and upper body strength.

Basic Rules Applied in Melbourne Social Netball Games

Netball is a sport played between two teams composed of seven players per team. It began in

England in the 1890s and emerged from the early versions of basketball. To give way to

international competition, playing rules have been standardized in 1960. Netball has restricted

movement as compared to basketball that is why even in the early days of the sport it was socially

appropriate for women (wearing dresses) to play it.

Melbourne social netball  is a fast and thrilling game. It is similar to basketball but uses an official

netball that is smaller and lighter. The goal of a netball team is to score more goals than your

opponents by shooting the ball through a ring that is attached to a post. Unlike basketball, netball

has no backboard behind the hoop and players are not allowed to dribble. You need to have great

skill in passing the ball so that you can make a goal. The team with the most number of goals is

declared the winner. The game is played on the hard court and each game has four quarters,

lasting for fifteen minutes each.

The court is divided into areas and players are assigned specific positions. Their positions identify

their roles within the team and limit their movement in certain areas of the court. To distinguish the

player’s position, a two letter abbreviation is written on the bib which is worn by the players. The

positions are: the goal shooter, wing attack, goal attack, goal defense, wing defense, center and the

goal keeper. The game allows only two positions in the defensive shooting circle; their role is to

prevent the opponent from making a goal.

At the start of every quarter or when a team scores, play commences with a player in the center

position and passes the ball from the center of the court. The umpire blows the whistle to restart a

play each team will have four players in the center third to receive the pass. As a rule, a player can

only hold the ball for three seconds before making an attempt on the goal or passing it to a

teammate.

The game can be played outdoors or in a covered stadium and balls used in this game come in

various colors and sizes. The social netball can be played among family, friends, co-workers and

any group who are interested in the game. You can play the sport with people who are close to you

and you will definitely have a great time bonding with them.

Get Fit in Melbourne: Social Netball Health Benefits

Adopting a healthy lifestyle has become the goal of many people

across the globe, primarily due to an increased awareness of the

many diseases and medical conditions that one can easily get

simply by neglecting one’s health habits. While eating the right

foods, drinking enough water, and practising moderation are

essential to a healthy life, these practises have been proven to be

only half the battle. A person would also need to get enough

exercise, either by having a regular workout routine, participating

in team sports, or accomplishing other high-energy activities thatcan sufficiently burn calories and keep the body fit and toned.

For both men and women seeking a sports challenge different

from the more common team activities available, they can try their

hand at playing netball. In Melbourne, social netball has become

a popular team sport that both men and women can try. The sport

evolved as a variation of the more traditional men’s basketball —

instead of running and dribbling the ball (which women in earlier decades found difficult to

accomplish on a grassy field with their long skirts and sleeves), players pass the ball among

themselves by simply throwing the ball. Australia’s youth and adults alike have grown to love signing

up for women’s and mixed netball teams and getting fit through the many skills the sport develops in

a player.

Netball is a fast-paced and very intense game that can actually provide a total body workout. Each

game lasts sixty minutes and the players are required to continually make short, sharp passes and

sprints. The usual actions that can be seen in this game are running around the pitch, sprinting in

Page 7: The Real Challenge in Melbourne Social Netball Game

short distances, leaping to pass or catch the ball and making sharp changes of direction. All those

activities can develop better leg strength and agility plus it also gives good cardiovascular workout.

Passing the ball from one player to another and aiming to shoot the ball into the net are additional

actions that develop the hand-to-eye coordination necessary for the game. Using key arm muscles

helps to improve upper body strength. In an average game, a player can burn up to 1,883 kilojoules

or 450 calories, and over time, the regular cardiovascular activity burns a significant amount of

calories and lowers body fat, which improves the player’s overall physical fitness.

Improved strength and stamina, increased flexibility and nimbleness, better coordination, and a

healthier cardiovascular system — with all of these benefits, what’s stopping anyone from getting

involved in one of the more popular team sports in Melbourne? Social netball  is a fun and healthy

activity that anyone can try by simply visiting their local sports centres where they can join a team, or

by forming one with a group of friends. Get active and enjoy the health benefits of playing netball

today.

How Melbourne Social Netball Helps Develop Psychological Skills Among Players

It’s a well-known fact that during a child’s early years, the toys and games that he plays with

essentially begin to teach the important skills that he would be utilising for most of their life. They

may not know it yet, but putting building blocks together to form basic structures, grouping similarlyshaped or coloured objects together, and fitting puzzle pieces into the right spaces all help to

develop mental and physical processes in a young child. Outwardly, a child may simply be moving

toys around with his hands, but inwardly, he is building the foundation of his motor and intellectual

skills.

Page 8: The Real Challenge in Melbourne Social Netball Game

8

As children and teens continue to grow, they become involved in a wider range of activities that

present more opportunities for learning. One of the more fun and interesting ways to enhance both

physical and mental skills is to play a team sport. Melbourne social netball is an example of a team

activity that provides young players with physical and mental challenges that greatly benefit their

overall development and well-being. It has a variation of men’s basketball but it will not require youto dribble the ball. But the players can experience better leg, upper body and cardiovascular strength

from sprinting and stopping activities. Agility in quick changing of directions and overall flexibility on

the court are the other benefits you can also get from this sport.

On a more psychological side, on the other hand, netball players can develop mental strength from

regularly playing the sport. The group dynamic of the game encourages an atmosphere of teamwork

wherein each player takes note of the current play in motion and determines the best way he can

contribute or assist another team member. Being subjected to pressure enables young players to

manage their own thought processes and focus on their tasks at hand, and the self-discipline

necessary to keep themselves in line regarding their diet and training requirements develops their

ability to be responsible for their habits and practices.

An athlete’s psychological strength does not merely involve developing a mind-set for winning a

game, as many younger children believe to be the primary or even only goal of the entire activity.

Sports psychologists believe that mental strength or toughness can be developed by a player by fully

understanding his personal motivations to succeed. Melbourne social netball  can be an excellent

tool in teaching young players to handle stress and pressure by themselves and to see a game

through despite any present distractions — these are habits that can be applied to many other

practical situations that they will encounter throughout their lives.

Games and sports, aside from being fun ways to get exercise and to bond with friends, are also

excellent tools for learning essential life skills. The discipline that comes with playing a team sport

like netball can help prepare a child for the challenges he will face in the future.

Melbourne Social Netball: A Great Way To Improve Life

Health is a very important aspect of human life. Total well-being enables a person to perform hisduties properly, relates with other people well and manages the daily stresses of life with a positive

outlook. If a person is not in good health other activities will be disturbed and he cannot optimize his

life. With the increase in sedentary form of life today, people overlook the importance of physical

activity in keeping the body healthy. Regular physical exercise will increase energy level, control

weight, reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, reduce the risk of diabetes and cancers, improve

mental health, increase your chances of living longer and many more benefits.

There are many physical activities that you can do such as

walking, running, swimming, aerobics and you can also play

sports like badminton or join unique sporting opportunity like the

Melbourne social netball. This sport is an extremely popular

sport in Australia and New Zealand and is gaining popularityaround the world. It is a game derived from basketball and is

originally played by women. It has certain features that appeal

to the interests of sports enthusiast including the fast pace

movement of players.

One objective of playing netball is to strengthen the body as the

sport requires running, jumping and sprinting. The process of

passing, catching and gripping a ball will strengthen and tone

the arms while the high frequency of vertical jumping as well as the short and fast runs builds up leg

muscle and stamina. Continuous ball passing and shooting is necessary for the game so you will

need a sharp hand-eye-coordination.

Aside from the physical benefits of netball, it also has mental health advantages. It is a great way to

manage stress as you play with your opponents to make a goal on the hoop. This team sport takes

away your focus on the things that burdens you and gives you an outlet without having to hurt

someone’s feelings. The physical activity gives you enough time to think more clearly on the

challenges of life that you have to face. Some people claim the women who play sports perform

better in their academic studies due to improved memory, learning and concentration.

Netball offers social benefits because it enables team building among the members. As the team

members gather for a game, they have every opportunity to interact with one another and establish

lasting relationships. Belonging to a team makes it easier to stick to a fitness regime. Netball allows

you to meet other people and learn about their experiences and celebrate achievements (whether

you win or lose!) as a team making you more sociable and happy person.

Melbourne is the capital of Victoria, Australia,

but besides that, it is also known for its culture

and the immense popularity of sports among its

inhabitants. In fact, in 2010, the city was given

the title of “World’s Ultimate Sports City” for thethird time by international sports association

SportAccord and Sportbusiness, the world’s

leading provider of information in the sports

industry. Melbourne was given the award

based on criteria that include the number of

annual sports held, major events held or

hosting rights secured from 2006 to 2014, numbers of federations hosted, facilities, venues,

transport, accommodation, and government support, among others.

While the city is more popularly known for hosting annual tennis and Formula One tournaments, it is

also home to lesser known sports. If you are an avid sports enthusiast, visiting Melbourne and taking

one of the numerous sports tours around the city will enlighten you on the various athletic diversions

engaged in by the people of this city.

One of these sports is netball, a game that is similar to basketball in many respects. In fact, the

game was derived from basketball, and was introduced in 1893 by Martina Bergman-Österberg to

her female students at the Physical Training College in Hampstead, London. While basketball was

an indoor game that was predominantly played by men, netball was played outside on grass by

women. The game was continually modified by various sports governing bodies until standardisedrules were created, producing the game that people enjoy today.

The International Federation of Netball Associations reports that there are more than 20 million

people in more than 80 countries playing netball today. It is most popular in the Commonwealth

nations, countries that used to be part of the British Empire. Transnational competitions include the

Netball Superleague in Great Britain and the ANZ Championship in Australia and New Zealand.

International competitions, on the other hand, include the quadrennial World Netball Championships,

the Commonwealth Games, and the annual World Netball Series. Netball was officially recognised

by the International Olympic Committee in 1995.

Netball is played by two teams of seven members, each with a specific role in the game. The

players’ roles also determine their locations and the areas where they are allowed on the netball

court. Over a period of four 15-minute quarters, teams take turns passing balls among members and

shooting goals within assigned shooting circles. The team with the most goals wins.

In the State Netball Victoria Body rules, netball teams are traditionally comprised of members with

similar playing skill levels. However, there are various sports clubs that allow players of different

skills to form teams, encouraging mingling among members and focusing on forging relationships in

addition to friendly competition. This kind of game is called social netball.

In your tour across the city, you will find numerous sports clubs in Melbourne. Social netball is

offered in these clubs, as well as further coaching and instruction to help you improve in the game.

Those who want to become umpires for netball can also avail of umpire training in these clubs. You

can sign up with friends in these clubs as a team, or you can join as an individual and be assigned to

a team. You can also register as an umpire.

If you are intrigued by this sport, you can visit Melbourne netball clubs and participate in the games.

With social netball, you can indulge in your athletic endeavours and at the same time meet new

people and make new friends. If you happen to travel to Melbourne, social netball is one of the local

sports that will make your trip to the city memorable.

Melbourne Social Netball: The History of the Game

With an estimated one million players nationwide, netball is the most popular social sport in Australia. That doesn’t mean, however, that the sport is exclusive to women; 20 years mixed

netball has been going for in both new Zealand and Australia. The game is a refreshing change

from the more commonly played basketball and soccer games and offers a welcome challengeto individuals looking for a different athletic experience.

So what exactly is Melbourne social netball? It’s a game played by two teams each consisting of

seven players. In contrast to basketball where dribbling is involved, netball is more focused onthrowing and catching. Goals must be scored by throwing a ball into a ring attached to a postthat stands 3.05 metres or 10 feet within a defined area.

Melbourne social netball came about in the 1900s, thanks to women in England who wanted toplay basketball, which was then recently invented by Canadian immigrant James Naismith. Theinitial version of the game played by women then involved using wet paper bags for the baskets, while broomsticks were used as the posts. The game was also played on grass, not in an indoorvenue. The game proved to be difficult to play, however, since women were commonly attired in

clothes with long skirts and nipped waists and they wore button-up shoes, making running in afield of grass quite hard. The long leg-of-mutton sleeves their clothes had also prevented themfrom dribbling and making successful passes. It was only logical for the women to begin thinkingof ways to make the game easier for them.

After the first set of rules was established in England in 1901, different countries began adoptingthe game and developing their own methods of playing it. The game soon reached Australia andNew Zealand before 1901 and was called Women’s Basketball until the name was changed tonetball in both countries in 1970.

In August 1927, the All Australia Women’s Basketball Association was formed. Melbourne

hosted the first official National Championships the following year. Australia was able tocompete internationally for the first time in 1938 against New Zealand—Australia won thematch, defeating New Zealand 40-11.

The first World Tournament for netball was held in England in 1963. Since then, the tournamenthas been held every four years. The World Championship title has been won by Australia ninetimes out of twelve. Their most notable win would be against New Zealand (42-38) during theWorld Netball Championship games in Auckland in 2007.

Melbourne social netball  has become an extremely popular athletic activity for men, women, and children alike. The sport has provided players with an enjoyable and challenging way to

exercise the mind and body, socialise with fellow athletes and sport enthusiasts, and create asense of community among the playing population. Local sports centres can accommodateanyone looking to join a team to get started in playing the well-loved sport.

Melbourne Social Netball Fosters a Sense of Community Among Team Members

Nothing strengthens the bond within a group of young people like an afternoon spent running

around, passing and fighting for a ball, and getting up to run again with a sheepish grin on yourface as you brush yourself off and getting back into the ball game. Sure, youngsters (especiallyyoung girls) can choose to spend their quality weekend or after-school time chatting with friendsover lattes, playing video games at home, or shopping and going to the movies, but there’s

something about playing a sport and working towards a common goal that helps team membersconnect in more ways than one.

In Melbourne, social netball is one of the more fun and productive ways to establish a bond anddevelop camaraderie among players, both within their own teams and with the opposing playersas well. Team sports like netball have always had obvious physical and psychological healthbenefits, but sports coaches, educators, and psychologists all agree that being part of a team

develops essential social skills that can be valuable throughout a person’s life. Netball is a variation of men’s basketball; the marked difference between the two sports is the

absence of dribbling. In 1895, women in the United States who wanted to play basketball foundthat dribbling and running around the field was quite difficult if you were wearing frocks with longsleeves, and so the game was modified to allow players to pass the ball to teammates by simplythrowing the ball without dribbling.

Players can experience increased leg, upper body, and cardiovascular strength from sprintingand stopping. Agility is also developed from making quick changes in direction, while sharperhand-to-eye-coordination is gained from passing the ball among teammates. But aside from

these physical benefits, netball also provides young people with a productive and healthfulactivity that keeps them from getting involved in less favourable projects. The regular trainingand competition schedules help to forge close friendships among the players, thus creating asafe and protected venue for socialising and meeting new people.

Netball competitions and other events organised by local sports centres also encouragecommunity involvement. Young people who have found the team sport to be a worthwhile andenjoyable activity often take it among themselves to encourage more support and participation

Page 14: The Real Challenge in Melbourne Social Netball Game

from other youth within the area; they also volunteer to promote the benefits of physical activityand help cultivate a spirit of community among members of their locality.

Family relationships can also be enriched by a son or a daughter’s involvement in sports.

Melbourne social netball clubs often find parents and other relatives of players activelyparticipating as coaches or umpires, and in some cases parents and their children can be seenplaying alongside each other in a single team. How’s that for quality family bonding time?

Being part of a netball team gives a young player a sense of belongingness, a discipline forresponsibly keeping oneself fit for playing the game, and a sense of involvement in communityevents and objectives. There’s no better way to get into a healthy and actively social lifestyle

than working towards shared goals both on and off a playing court.

Basketball was originallyplayed indoors by men, with teams of nine shooting a ball into a closed-ended peach basket.Netball, on the other hand, was introduced as an outdoor game for women, where teams ofseven players are tasked with shooting balls into a net-lined ring.

The game is played on a court that is divided into three major areas, two goal defence thirdsand one centre third, in addition to the goal circles where the goal post containing the net-linedring is located. Each player is assigned a specific position that determines the location of theplayer in the court and the areas where the player is allowed to set foot on. For example, the

Goal Keeper is tasked with defending the team’s goal third, as well as work closely with theGoal Defence in protecting the goal circle. Goal keepers cannot set foot on the court’s centre

third, which is guarded by the Goal Defence and the Wing Defence. There are various otherroles in the game, each of which has a specific court position. Current rules for netball calls fortwo teams of seven to shoot goals into the opponent’s hoop, with the team that scores the most

goals winning the match.

Netball teams are traditionally formed based on players’ skill levels, in accordance with the
