1 The Rashi school

This past year has been a spectacular one by any measure. Rashi’s reputation continued to grow and the school has achieved significant milestones. Our admissions season was the strongest ever and as a result, we started the 2014-2015 school year with a record-breaking 332 students. This represents a 17% increase over our low enrollment of 284 in 2007. Wait lists for Kindergarten are becoming a regular occurrence and this year was no exception. In addition to the increased level of interest in the school, the applicant pool represented a strong match with the school’s mission and values.

Fundraising has also been a highlight. The Annual Campaign raised over $1.26 million: the highest in school history. Of course, completing the $30 million Campaign for Rashi was the ultimate achievement of the year—the result of an immense amount of hard work and belief in our school’s mission spanning more than a decade.

On the educational front, among many initiatives, we introduced a new math curriculum, ThinkMath!, and have been thrilled with the initial results. We continued to integrate leading-edge technology into instruction through our “Connected Learning Initiative” and the introduction of a one-to-one iPad program in the Fifth Grade. We also continued to

Matt King

use the AIMSweb assessment instruments to make decisions and provide individualized instruction in reading and mathematics.

Last year, we said farewell to Rabbi Ellen Pildis, who retired after serving Rashi with great distinction for ten years, and we welcomed Rabbi Jodi Seewald Smith, who comes to us after a highly successful tenure at Temple Chayai Shalom in Easton, MA.

As you know, Rashi has been the fortunate recipient of the $10 million Peerless Excellence Grant, which since September of 2006, has allowed us to strengthen our educational programming and marketing efforts. With our increased enrollment and successful fundraising, we have been able to successfully supplant many Peerless expenses with operating funds. As Peerless winds down this year, we move our focus to replacing all these vital funds to ensure Rashi’s long-term sustainability. We are beginning the planning for our next Capital Campaign so that we can sustain excellence beyond the Peerless Excellence Grant.

As I enter into my final year as Head of School, I am pleased to report that Rashi is in excellent shape with a superb Board, leadership team, faculty, and staff. I will be working closely with the Board to ensure a smooth transition to the next Head of School, Mallory Rome, this coming year and into the future. Rashi has become a permanent part of me and I look forward with great enthusiasm to the school’s ongoing success.

thanK you for giving Me the opportunity to be part of this vibrant and unique

coMMunity.

It was love at fi rst sight when Jessica and I took our tour of Rashi in the old location in Dedham. That was fi fteen years ago. Rashi became and remains a centerpiece of our family and our community. While I may have kidded at times about counting the days until my term was over, the truth is that I have loved every minute of my time as Board President and will remember this time among the best periods of my life.

I am awestruck by the quality and commitment demonstrated by faculty, staff, and the Board members of our institution. This includes not just those among us now, but those who came before us—those who had the vision and audacity to set the foundation for our community and began the process that we have inherited.

My fi rst experience of serving Rashi was leading the last Head of School Search Committee. Without it, I never would have known the pleasure of serving Rashi. Since the conclusion of that search, Matt King has been a mentor, partner, and friend. Working with him has opened my eyes and helped me understand what it takes to build and nurture high-performing teams. The outstanding team we have in place at Rashi will help sustain our world-class institution. Matt has strengthened our school enormously and we owe him a great debt of gratitude. I know that when he departs this coming June, Mallory Rome will serve as a strong leader who will build on his legacy.

During the past eight school years, we have been the benefi ciaries of an exceptional grant—the

Peerless Excellence Grant—which provided vital resources to enhance so many facets of our school including academics, professional development, marketing, and several others. This grant will be expended by the end of the 2014-2015 school year. As we move into the future, nourishing the excellence made possible, in part, by the Peerless Grant will be paramount as we work to strengthen Rashi’s fi nancial position. Having successfully completed our fi rst-ever capital campaign this past spring, we built a foundation (literally!) by funding the creation of our permanent home. Now, the task before us is to ensure that Rashi will be here for our children’s children and their children. To do so will require more hard work and, of course, more funding to create an organizational endowment and the capital necessary to position Rashi as a strong, vibrant educational leader for generations to come.

On the topic of leaders, they say the mark of a great manager is hiring better than oneself. If this is the case, then I may be a better manager than I imagined as I proudly hand over the Rashi gavel to Kathy Cohen as the next President of the Board. I know I am leaving the Board in great hands and am eager to support Kathy as she takes us to even greater heights.

I won’t be leaving the Board entirely until I complete my term in two years, and I am looking forward to assisting with the challenges that lie ahead. As I step down, I am humbled by your trust in me during these last two years and I am excited for our next act.

financiaL accessibiLity

During the 2013-2014 school year, Rashi granted fi nancial aid awards totaling approximately $1.6 million—representing 18% of gross tuition—to its families. Our fi nancial aid budget has allowed us to attract and maintain an economically diverse student body: approximately 30% of Rashi students received fi nancial aid this past year. In comparison, only 23% of the student bodies of Rashi’s Boston area peer independent elementary schools receive fi nancial aid.*

In addition to Rashi’s fi nancial aid, a number of families new to Rashi benefi ted from CJP’s Discover Day School Grant, which Rashi matches for a second eligible child.

The Tikkun Alum Award recognizes Rashi alumni who have demonstrated a strong commitment to social justice and tikkun olam (repairing the world) in their post-Rashi education and beyond. This spring, we proudly announced the 2014 Tikkun Alums: Becki Steinberg and Emily Steinberg. Below are selections from their remarks from the Annual Dinner.

Becki steinberg:“I founded RALLY: Raquet and Literacy League for Youth, a non-profit summer camp that teaches tennis and reading to inner-city children, free of charge, when our family moved to Hartford, CT two years after my graduation from Rashi.

“Guided by the value of tikkun olam that I had learned here, I hoped to channel my passions for tennis and reading into something that would ultimately help to shape the world around me.

“Rashi’s core values: Ruach, Kavod, Kehillah, Tzedek, and Limud - not only helped me understand that repairing the world was intrinsically tied to being a Jew, but they were also the values I hoped to share with other children at RALLY.”

emily steinberg:“For the past six years, I have had the privilege of helping lead and expand RALLY and I’ve loved seeing children shaped by their camp experience each summer. My years at Rashi have similarly shaped me into the person I have become today.

“For me, Rashi was a joyful community that inspired me to learn with passion, treat others with respect, and take initiative to repair the world around me. I create a similar environment for the children at RALLY; I hope their experiences will lead them to one day give back to their communities.

“I am so grateful to Rashi for helping me to view the world through a Jewish lens and for not only teaching me that I have a responsibility to repair the world, but also empowering me to believe that I could do it.”

sociaL Justice

Our social justice program centers around four spheres of learning: classroom curriculum, community partnerships, Tzedakah Heroes, and all-school projects. Social Justice Coordinator

Stephanie Rotsky teaches that the world is made of many pieces—some whole, and some broken. Below is just a sampling of the many ways our students helped to repair broken pieces of the world this year.

The many individual initiatives taken by students are not listed here.

Rashi is proud to instill a deep love for Israel in

its students. “We, as a people, have a spiritual

connection with Israel,” explains Rabbi Ellen Pildis,

“and we want our students to see and walk and

feel in this land what they learn here at Rashi.”

Our curriculum combines modern conversational

Hebrew and Israeli culture, history, and geography

to encourage a love for our homeland and provide

the opportunity to create connections with the

Israeli people. Through Rashi’s many Israeli teachers,

students learn to understand Israeli culture, explore

what living in Israel is like, and how Jewish holidays

are celebrated from an Israeli perspective.

“As part of the Grade 1 curriculum,” explains Social

Justice Coordinator Stephanie Rotsky, “they think

about what it means to love Israel and what they

wish for the country. Based on their responses, we

compose a prayer for Israel that they recite during

t’fi llah in Grade 2.”

Kesem, our Israeli dance troupe, participates in the

Boston Israeli Folkdance Festival each year. This

year, Kesem was featured at the festival and Ellen

Berkowitz, our Israeli Dance instructor and proud

Rashi parent, was honored for her many years of

contribution to the Israeli Dance community.

school celebration of Israel with special projects and

activities for each grade.

The culmination of our Israel curriculum is our

exchange program with the Leo Baeck School in

Haifa. Each winter, 8th Graders from Leo Baeck

visit Rashi and spend a week with our own 8th

Graders as well as time with students in each

grade. In the spring, our 8th Graders travel to

Israel to reunite with their friends from Haifa and

to tour the country. In Israel, students see their

education come to life. “The Leo Baeck exchange

program challenges our students to think about

Jewish values and ethics. They explore issues of

Jewish identity in the United States and in Israel,”

explains Rabbi Sharon Clevenger. This year, our

students had the wonderful opportunity to visit

Nirim, an organization serving extreme high-risk

youth that the school supported during the 2014

Rashi Purim Tamchui project.

Along with instilling a great love for Israel in our

students, our goal is for Rashi students to form

lasting relationships with Israeli families. “We’ve

been very successful,” says Rabbi Ellen Pildis.

“Many times I’ve been in Israel and bumped into

Rashi students who are visiting their friends

there. You can’t hope for a stronger, unsolicited

endorsement for our program.”

“May all the light of Israel shine as brightly as it ever has in 66 years. From 1948, it has

grown from a small torch into a beacon, the light welcoming all those who seek safety. A country for the Jews, we have prevailed through all hardships to create

the ultimate home for everyone.” - Jason Bussgang, Class of 2014

While our 8th Graders were in Haifa this March, our friends from the Leo Baeck School took them out for the evening.

Jewish Life

At Rashi, we offer countless opportunities for students to interact with Torah. Above: A student found and kissed a portion in the Torah during the Kindergarten Family Education program about the Shema.Below: A student presented the Torah before reading in Minyan.

In the 5774 school year, teachers incorporated texts from Pirkei Avot, the Wisdom of the Ancestors, into their classes. Each grade focused on a different passage.

The eighth grade studied following text:

Pirkei Avot, 2:5

Don’t separate yourself from the community. Don’t be overconfi dent until the day of your death. Don’t judge your fellow human being until you have reached that person’s place. Don’t say anything that is unintelligible with hope that it will be understood. And don’t say, ‘When I have leisure, I will study’—perhaps, you never will have that leisure.

As students considered the fi rst clause, “Don’t separate yourself from the community,” they spoke of what it means to be a “senior” at Rashi

and how they could both be completely engaged in their fi nal year as Rashi students as well as focus on their next steps, both academically and socially.

A group of seventh and eighth graders studied this text:

Pirkei Avot, 1:14

If I am not for myself who will be for me? And, if I am for myself alone, then what am I? And if not now, when?

This excerpt became the foundation text for Rashi’s new Facing History partnership with the Epiphany School, an Episcopal tuition-free independent school for children of economically disadvantaged families in Dorchester, MA. Students used this text to explore the importance of taking care of both self and other and knowing when to take action. When leadership at the Epiphany School wrote about our partnership with “Schools That Can,” they quoted Hillel, too.

הלל אומר, אל תפרוש מן הציבור, ואל תאמין בעצמך עד יום מותך, ואל תדוןאת חברך עד שתגיע למקומו, ואל תאמר דבר שאי אפשר לשמוע וסופו

להישמע. ואל תאמר לכשאפנה אשנה, שמא לא תפנה.הוא היה אומר, אם אין אני לי, מי לי; וכשאני לעצמי, מה אני;

ואם לא, עכשיו, אימתי.

As NewBridge on the Charles celebrates its fi fth year, our partnership continues to deepen and grow. In an increasingly age-segregated world, Rashi and NewBridge’s programming represents a unique opportunity for cross-generational relationship building that allows each generation to learn from the other.

Rashi has a constant stream of NewBridge volunteers in the building: seniors support early readers, act as math tutors, and assist in the art room and the library. This year, the roles reversed as Rashi students had the opportunity to become the tutors and NewBridge residents the pupils. As part of a new technology initiative, the students assisted residents with their iPads. The program, which was initially conceived as a single engagement, proved enormously popular and is now an ongoing activity at NewBridge.

The Grade 3 Immigration Unit came to life thanks to our friends at NewBridge. After learning about immigration in the classroom, our Third Graders interviewed fi rst-generation Americans living or working on the multigenerational campus about their experiences. The program proved benefi cial to everyone involved. “No one had ever asked me about my immigration story before,” said one NewBridge resident.

As part of their Life Cycles Unit, Grade 2 planted vegetables which are now growing in their own plot in the NewBridge garden. Much to the surprise of these little gardeners, one generous resident offered some radish seeds—which turned out to be the best-growing plant in the plot—when he noticed them at their work. “I’ll be sure to stop by and water them,” the resident promised before returning to his own plot, already rich with wildfl owers and his own array of vegetables.

Our Mitzvah Makers program, coming up on its 20th year, continues to celebrate joy and friendship with the residents at Hebrew SeniorLife. The Mitzvah Makers’ incredible group of students in Grades 2-5 plan theme-based programs for their monthly visits to NewBridge. This program continues into middle school through the Making Memories program which focuses on interaction with residents in the Memory Support units of Assisted Living and the Health Care Center at NewBridge. “This transition is a central piece of our program,” explains Lynda Bussgang, Manager of the Multigenerational Program. “It really speaks to the breadth and depth of our collaboration.”

We are proud of our meaningful program with NewBridge on the Charles and we look forward to many more years of this partnership which enriches the lives of residents and students alike.

We love your visits every month because you

It is with great pleasure that we announce that the 2014 Annual Campaign has achieved a record level of $1,262,492. We extend a heartfelt “thank you” to the many generous parents, grandparents, alumni parents, alumni, staff, faculty, current and former Board members, and friends of The Rashi School who helped to achieve this milestone.

The cornerstone of Rashi’s fundraising efforts is the Annual Campaign, which raises funds through personal solicitations, fundraising appeals, and special events. These events include the Limud Award Celebration, our annual fall fundraiser that celebrates Limud (learning), one of our core values, and Rashi’s Annual Dinner, a gala event held in the spring and attended by the Rashi and broader Jewish community.

Annual Campaign gifts are typically unrestricted and help to cover the school’s operating expenses, enabling Rashi to bridge the gap between tuition income and the school’s actual expenses. This support is vital to sustain strong academics and Jewish studies, recruit and retain the best faculty and staff, make a Jewish education financially accessible, and shape our future leaders in the Jewish community and the world.

Thank you to all those who generously supported Rashi’s fundraising efforts. Rashi is only as financially sound as the community that supports it and I am pleased to say that Rashi is strong as a result of your investment.

TODAH RABAH and best wishes for a happy and heaLthy 5775!

The 2013-2014 Annual Campaign closed this June at $1.26M, continuing the upward trend we have seen for the past three fiscal years. Along with this monetary increase, we have also seen an increase in parent participation, as illustrated in the graph on page 19.

Each fall, nearly 300 visitors join us for Generations Day. The event celebrates Grandparents and Special Friends who help to shape and reinforce the values and commitment to Judaism that Rashi parents have, themselves, made to provide a strong Jewish education for their children.

We have made every effort to ensure accuracy. Please accept our sincere apology for any omissions or errors and report them to the Development Offi ce.

This is not the end. This is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. To me, this means that Rashi

was just a prologue; a taste of the future that we all advance toward.

Rashi has done so much for all of us. I will always remember my time here as a source of help. Rashi has been a place where I have learned

the value of partnership. This value extends not only between students, but it is a link that binds students to teachers, as well.

Eitan Green, Class of 2014

One would think that as a teenager, I would perhaps be a bit shy and self-conscious about how I looked or how people

looked at me. However, this was never the case. As I refl ect on this, I have only one possible answer: Rashi has provided me with 9 years of comfort, care, and support throughout the good moments and the bad. I realize now what a gift

it has been to be in a place where I could view myself with confi dence and self-assurance.

Melanie Rosenbloom, Class of 2014

23 The Rashi school

After years of being “wandering Jews,” housed in six different locations, the Campaign for Rashi was established to realize the dream of a permanent home. We are proud and excited that in April 2014, after more than thirteen years of work, the historic $30 million campaign was successfully completed!

Barry Shrage, President of Combined Jewish Philanthropies, noted that “the completion of Rashi’s permanent home represents the work of many hands. It’s the achievement of the very best hopes and dreams of our community and our people. Those who led the Campaign to accomplish this dream are among the most important leaders of Boston’s Jewish community and their deep commitment to philanthropy, to Jewish education, and to a shared vision of Jewish Renaissance extends far beyond the school. They are responsible for transforming our community’s future. The Rashi School, the “values bubble” it created, the wonderful children it produces (many of whom are already professional leaders at CJP), its inerodible leaders, and the amazing building they built have created a cultural tipping point that has and will forever change our Jewish community and our Jewish lives.”

As we conclude our fourth year in our home in Dedham, the Rashi community continues to inspire our students to grow and learn. Each day, students take advantage of myriad opportunities that this unique learning environment offers: the interactive technology in the classrooms, the multigenerational programming with our NewBridge neighbors, the wonderful sports fields, state-of-the-art theater, and our beautiful sanctuary, the Beit Midrash.

“We offer our sincere thanks to the many generous campaign supporters who contributed to this historic success. Each of you joined together to make an investment in education—and in our Jewish community—that will bring the rewards of lifelong learning and Jewish values to generations of students,” noted Rashi parent Lisa Wallack, Campaign Co-chair who served throughout the entire Campaign. “The return on this investment will be a future bright with Rashi graduates who are tomorrow’s leaders—leaders with critical minds and compassionate hearts.”

a Job weLL doneKol HaKavod to Dena Rashes, Jon Sandler, Jill Goldenberg and Lisa Wallack, Campaign for Rashi Co-chairs during the term of this effort. Achieving this dream would not have been possible without their unwavering commitment, tireless work, and faithful dedication which enabled us to build our permanent home—the foundation so vital to sustaining Rashi. In appreciation of their outstanding work, Rashi has installed a new sculpture in the front lobby, dedicated in their honor.

Thank you to all of our Campaign for Rashi donors and supporters for helping to complete this extraordinary effort!
