2006 Annual ReportEnsuring the health of raptors and the world we share

  • Thank you! Benefactors and friends of The Raptor Center, your commitment of time and money make this organization possible. The fruits of your generosity are evident everyday through:

    • Continuing advancements in raptor medicine and the care of over 800 birds annually

    • Training programs for the next generation of avian medical professionals

    • Educational outreach to over 240,000 people, especially children

    • Public engagement through the hands-on involvement of over 300 volunteers

New horizons have evolved through collaborations in and out of the University that expand the scope of our efforts to ensure the health of raptors and the environment. Your support makes all of this possible. Thank you for believing in and supporting our mission – the caring for raptors and the world we share!

    Sincerely,Patrick T. Redig, D.V.M., Ph.D.Director

Dear Friends, The Raptor Center continues to amaze me. Its leadership in raptor research, medicine, and surgery is universal. Its progress addressing crucial conservation issues attracts students worldwide. Its combined clinical work and outreach programs are changing perceptions locally and globally.

Yet The Raptor Center’s grass-roots work is also thriving. Today many future leaders come of age detached from nature. The Center’s programs connecting children with the environment help bridge this chasm.

Strong partners build strong organizations. At The Raptor Center, the partnership includes staff as well as generous volunteers and benefactors. Thank you for your support and encouragement—and for making it possible for The Raptor Center to soar into the future.

Sincerely, Jeffrey Klausner, D.V.M.Dean College of Veterinary Medicine

Singular EducationAs the fi nest center of its kind worldwide, our staff and advanced facilities handle the most complex cases while continuing to evolve diagnostic and treatment practices in avian medicine. The Center draws veterinarians and veterinary students worldwide. In 2006 our professional educational programs included:

    • Avian Emergency and Critical Care drew 20 veterinary technicians to the day-long workshop, earning CE credits.

    • Raptors in Captivity: A Guide to Care and Management was adopted by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2005 as their standard on captive raptor management. In 2006 two workshops for raptor professionals were held based on the book content.

    • Professional presentations were made by The Raptor Center faculty and staff in the United States and abroad.

Breakthrough ResearchFrom the deadly West Nile virus, to lead poisoning in eagles, to aspergillosis, a leading killer of captive birds, the Center’s research continues to advance our knowledge of the avian world. Today the Center’s work is helping protect wild populations as well as endangered birds in captive breeding programs around the globe. Initiatives include:

    • Proposals relating to avian infl uenza submitted to the National Institutes of Health and the Morris Animal Foundation.

    • Reported fi rst encounter of a malaria-causing parasite in a screech owl.

    • Published fi ndings of goshawks and great horned owls infected with West Nile virus.

    • Full-length chapters for international textbooks.

Reaching OutOur rehabilitation work, through which we treat approximately 800 birds each year, is the heart of our outreach activities. In 2006:

    • Education programs featuring our non-releasable eagles, hawks, owls, and falcons touched more than 240,000 people.

    • Classroom, Internet, and science education programs allowed us to connect with 400,000 people.

“The Raptor Center is a forerunner in avian medicine, and so much of its work is transferable to other fi elds, including human ones,” says Joyce Kelly, Minnesota alumnus and past president and founder of the Wildlife Habitat Council. Joyce has included in her will a major bequest to The Raptor Center.

In 2006, The Raptor Center admitted 646 wild

birds and conducted 1,314 education programs.

A Holistic VisionAt The Raptor Center, we ensure the health of raptors and the world we share through teaching, research, and service.

  • The current range of the California Condor is signifi cantly restricted compared to its historical range, and there has never been one in Minnesota – until last November. An unfortunate accident led to the exciting arrival of an historic visitor at The Raptor Center.

Medical Expertise and Commitment California Condor #350, a wild-hatched bird from the north rim of the Grand Canyon, suffered a broken wing in a traumatic accident. While the cause remains a mystery, what is known is where the fi eld biologists sent him for treatment—The Raptor Center. Their decision was based on the Center’s expertise in avian orthopedics as well as Dr. Redig’s longtime involvement with the California Condor Recovery Team.

A Precarious SurvivorAt the time of the accident, Condor #350 was one of only four surviving condors to be wild-hatched since the reintroduction program was begun in 1992. Two of the birds were new chicks not yet through the dangerous time of fl edging—both have since fl edged successfully. Compounding the urgency was the fact that the other fl ighted wild-hatched bird was missing at the same time. Getting Condor #350 back to fl ight status became crucial.

Medical and Behavioral ChallengesOur mission was complicated. Medical management was only one part of the problem. Equally challenging was managing the condor’s affi nity for humans. Condors familiarize to humans very easily. If Condor #350 became habituated to humans at The Raptor Center, all efforts would be partially in vain. The bird would still be available for future breeding, but could not be released into the wild.

As the avian veterinarians considered the best course of treatment, the clinic staff worked on condor management issues. A private room was secured—move the eagles! Diet was debated—what would this Arizona carrion feeder eat? Volunteers were briefed—no noise near the condor condo.

Successful Team EffortStaff and volunteers worked as a single team. The commitment to keeping this bird isolated was unanimous. But treating him still meant human contact. This dilemma was solved by having two people enter the condor condo in the dark. Once the bird became controlled, they covered his head and whisked him into treatment.

The Minnesota Odyssey of California Condor #350One of only 127 condors living in the wild, Condor #350 was particularly special. He was one of the few living condors to be wild-hatched since the introduction of the captive breeding and restoration program.

Many people—including the media—saw this magnifi cent bird as he was under anesthesia and being treated. All respected the need to disappear when the bird began waking up. Only three weeks after admission, Condor #350 was recovering and receiving physical therapy 2-3 times per week.

Soaring across Arizona SkiesAll combined efforts came to fruition on January 19, 2006, when Condor #350 was released and began soaring into his future in the skies above the Grand Canyon.

California Condor 101Scientifi c name: Gymnogyps californianusSize: 20 pounds with a nine to nine and a half foot wingspanCurrent Range: California’s Los Padres National Forest, Ventana Wilderness Sanctuary near Big Sur, and Arizona’s Grand CanyonHabitat: requires large areas for foraging with old-growth treesNests: caves and crevices on steep cliffsFood: carrion eater of large mammalsCurrent wild population: 127

“He had absolutely no hesitation, taking only one leap before fl apping powerfully back into the wild…seeming no different than any other bird in the area. Thank you for making this happen.” Chris Parish of The Peregrine Fund

  • Going Global For some it’s just a catchphrase, but at The Raptor Center “going global” means the intensive training in medicine, research, and conservation that international veterinarians and students take back to their countries. In 2006, the Center welcomed nine professionals from Costa Rica, France, the Netherlands, Canada, Brazil, India, and Israel. The program participants receive much of their training by Raptor Center intern and Costa Rica native Luis Cruz-Martinez, D.V.M., who is well-versed in the medical and environmental challenges impacting raptors and other species abroad. “In Costa Rica,” he says, “we have a great deal of biodiversity, but without a good environment, our work will not progress.”

Nexus of Environment and CultureInternational veterinarians and students participate in four-to-six week externships. While most come to learn the basic principles of avian medicine and surgery, primarily orthopedics, an environmental and cultural problem intrigued Israel’s Ariela Rosenzweig. As part of her externship, the senior veterinary student presented a paper on the issue of Diclofenac poisoning decimating vulture populations in India. A non-steroidal anti-infl ammatory drug, Diclofenac is used to ease arthritis pain in aging cattle, which the culture holds in high esteem. Toxic to birds, the drug was being ingested by vultures as they scavenged cattle.

During her externship at the Center, Ariela developed medical skills to care for injured and sick raptors and also opened new communication channels to support her work with threatened species back home. “It is important,” says Dr. Cruz-Martinez, “that we all learn to address the cultural, as well as the medical, issues being faced by raptors around the world.”

“The Raptor Center is recognized worldwide as the place for avian medicine.” Dr. Luis Cruz-Martinez, D.V.M.

Raptors, like humans, are top-of-the-food chain predators. Habit and environmental degradation threatening raptors also imperils humans.

The Kids ConnectionAs our culture becomes more urban, our connection with the natural world may seem more distant. For the second year at The Raptor Center, AmeriCorps Promise Fellows found that introducing raptors to disadvantaged children helped them rediscover the world around them. A Minnesota program, AmeriCorps Promise Fellows works to close the achievement gap by educating students in need of alternative learning experiences. In 2006 our AmeriCorps Promise Fellows, Micah Scholer and Jill Determan, conducted 308 programs reaching 34,884 youth and introduced a new youth initiative, the Youth Raptor Corps.

Fridley Middle School For sixth graders at Fridley Middle School, a Raptor Center program sparked an interest in reading. Students were introduced to birds of prey and then received individual instruction with a focus on raptors. The program inspired the students to create two raptor ABC books for the school’s fi rst graders. Plus, they took on the role of instructor, reading their books to the younger students. The experience not only boosted their confi dence, but also developed their individual reading and writing skills.

Bryn Mawr ElementaryAt Bryn Mawr Elementary in Minneapolis, an AmeriCorps eight-month enrichment program helped third grade students write a script about an injured raptor and create the props and sets. At the program’s conclusion, the third graders presented the play to 350 schoolmates.

Youth Raptor CorpsThe Youth Raptor Corps, a new youth initiative introduced in 2006, provides service learning opportunities for young people ages 13- 17. At Youth Raptor Corps meetings, young people see live raptors, learn about the birds’ environments, natural history, and ways of positively impacting them. The free program lets students connect with the raptors by making tail sheaths, raptor leashes, and kestrel nesting boxes.

“You did an amazing job of keeping the kids interested while sneaking in the learning. The kids were hanging on the edge of their seats the entire time.” Bob, Minneapolis third-grade teacher

“I learned how important raptors are to people and how we need to protect them because they help us in so many ways.” 7th grader from St. Paul

  • A Strong Financial Base Fiscal Year July 1, 2005 – June 30, 2006

Like most non-profi t organizations, maintaining a strong fi nancial position at The Raptor Center is essential. The Raptor Center fi nished this fi scal year modestly increasing its reserves. Our strong and stable operations in 2006 enabled us to use every fi nancial resource to its utmost capacity. Revenue drivers include:

    • Education program sales• Enhanced development program • New friend and donor fundraiser,

Hope is the Thing with Feathers• New community fundraiser,

the Xcel Energy Raptor Bowl• New grants from 3M Foundation and the

    Solid Waste Management Board

Board PerspectiveIn 2006, The Raptor Center Advisory Board was strengthened. Working with the Center’s leadership team, we completed a strategic planning process that looked at stabilizing infrastructure. We also evaluated the Center’s relationship to the University and ultimately determined that keeping the Center within the University of Minnesota is the best model.

In addition, the Board of Advisors launched a new community fundraising event – Xcel Energy Raptor Bowl. This event contributed to the fi nancial health of the Center by:

    • Securing corporate sponsorships for the Raptor Bowl event from Skyline Exhibits, SRI, Target Corporation, Wells Fargo, and Xcel Energy.

    • Establishing partnerships with Brit’s Pub, KARE 11, and WCCO Radio.

We look forward to working with a new executive director and continuing to fi nd new ways to support The Raptor Center’s worldwide efforts to ensure raptor health through teaching, research, and service. This is an exciting time for the organization and we are eager to help The Raptor Center soar into the future.

A Tribute to Dr. DukeVisionary, co-founder, conservationist, and owl lover

In August we lost a legend in the fi eld of avian physiology and raptor rehabilitation, Dr. Gary Duke. A co-founder of The Raptor Center and a dedicated conservationist, Dr. Duke succumbed to early onset Alzheimer’s disease at age 68.

Dr. Duke joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota as an avian gastrointestinal physiologist in 1967, after receiving his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. In 1970, a veterinary student brought him four baby great horned owls, sparking his lifelong interest in the birds. He subsequently teamed up with Pat Redig, a veterinary student who offered to help him care for the owls. Working out of animal holding rooms in a research area, the pair launched the program that later became The Raptor Center.

State-of-the-Art Center From the start, Dr. Duke worked to create a state-of-the-art raptor rehabilitation center with a strong emphasis on conservation and education. “I will always be grateful for all his work in establishing the program and forging relationships with many friends, donors, and scientifi c professionals,” said Dr. Redig.

A prolifi c author, Dr. Duke wrote over 100 research papers, chapters in 9 books, and 26 symposium papers. His contributions were recognized by the:

    • ASPCA Award for Humane Excellence• American Motors Conservation Award• National Wildlife Rehabilitators’ Award for

Lifetime Achievement• Merck Award for Achievement in Poultry

    Science

International Birder and RunnerAn ardent birdwatcher, Dr. Duke led birding trips to Arizona, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Newfoundland, Mexico, Kenya, Tanzania, and Botswana. He was also an avid runner, logging 20,000 miles across fi ve continents.

A gift to The Raptor Center is a wonderful way to honor this gentle scientist, researcher, and conservationist. Dr. Duke was truly a giant in avian medicine to whom we all owe an immense debt of gratitude. For your convenience, we have enclosed a gift envelope. Please consider a gift to honor Dr. Gary Duke’s legacy to The Raptor Center. Or give online at www.TheRaptorCenter.org

Special EventsThe Raptor Center hosts a variety of special events that allow individuals and organizations to make a difference in the world we share with raptors. There is a special event and giving level for everyone. We extend a sincere thank you to all those who sponsored, planned, and participated in our very successful 2006 events.

The Xcel Energy Raptor BowlNew for 2006 was the Xcel Energy Raptor Bowl, which garnered nearly $43,000. Organized by the Raptor Center Advisory Board, the lawn bowling fundraiser was held at Brit’s Pub in downtown Minneapolis. Teams and players hailed from Xcel Energy, Target, Wells Fargo, Skyline Exhibits, Brit’s Pub, WCCO Radio, Hollstadt & Associates, Minnesota Wild, Ameriprise, Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly LLP, Analysts International, SRI-YWCA, Gray Plant Mooty, Grant Thornton, and Brookfi eld. Plans are underway for a repeat performance on July 11, 2007. For more information call 612-624-3431.

Hope is the Thing with FeathersThe fi rst annual luncheon was held March 30, 2006, at The Raptor Center. At the event, our 76 guest donors, volunteers, friends, and supporters heard about the Center’s positive infl uence on humans as well as raptors. In addition to awareness, the event raised over $53,000 in one hour. We welcome your attendance at this event on May 2, 2007; please call 612-624-6146 for more information.

Spring Open HouseA favorite tradition, The Raptor Center’s Spring Open House opened its doors to friends, neighbors, and donors on Sunday, April 2, 2006. The event provided close encounters with eagles, hawks, owls, and falcons, as well as hands-on activities and educational displays for kids of all ages.

Fall and Spring Raptor Release EventsTwice each year, The Raptor Center releases birds back to the wild at public events. This year we held releases September 24, 2006, at Lake Rebecca Park Reserve and May 6, 2006, at Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center. The bi-annual fall and spring events feature the release of rehabilitated birds of prey, with raptors on exhibit, educational displays, and children’s activities throughout the day. Again this year, 3M Foundation sponsored the Spring Raptor Release.
