The music was smooth and flowing. Underneath the bow, the strings vibrated each at a different speed

but together the resonance sounded beautiful. I wish I could be up on stage playing a violin too.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a violin and if I had one and was up there,

no one else would remain in the building as even the walls would

probably quiver and tremble at the sound.

Paul, in Romans 12:3-8, compares the church to the human body. Each of us as

members of Christ’s church has been given different abilities...similar to a

violin’s different strings. In I Cor 3:5-11, Paul lets us know that as we sharpen

and utilize our individual abilities (think tuning of individual violin strings), it still is not about us. Only

God can bless our work thus making it acceptable and fruitful.

Max Lucado in his book, Just like Jesus, gives some good advice, “Be aware of your strengths. When

you teach, do people listen? When you lead, do people follow? When you administer, do things get

better? When are you most productive? Identify your strengths and then…major in them. Failing to

focus on our strengths may prevent us from accomplishing the unique task God has called us to do.”

As an Emmaus Pilgrim, what strengths do you have? Consider the responses you have received from

your interaction with others; in what areas have they encouraged you? These strengths will help define

the various tasks which you have a potential to be successful in.

The fall season is kicking off and many churches are starting new programs. Each program requires

people with different skills. Talk to your church leadership and find out how you can be a blessing to

your fellow church members and at the same time enjoy the unique task God has called you to do.

Take that step of faith now. You are but one violin string in the orchestra, but a very important string to

the musician, to the orchestra’s conductor and…to God.

May you abound with His blessings this year during your adventure in God’s kingdom.

Lay Director Thoughts — Walk #208

Together the Assistant Lay Director Jeff Klein and I are in full preparations of PSWTE208, which will be held on October 11-14,

2012 at Christ Lutheran Church in Lakewood, WA. We are excited at what the Lord will bring for this weekend. We know our

best preparations are fully dependant on his Grace and Mercy. We thank Him for the many blessings He has bestowed on each of

us and our families during this time and give our praise and thanks for the team assembled thus far.

The theme for PSWTE 208 will be" Prepare the Way for the Lord!" after Isaiah 40:3-5.

A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our

God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rug-

ged places a plain. And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the

LORD has spoken.” – Isaiah 40:3-5 (NIV)

This passage is especially important to me as it has helped me through some very tough times of trial. My family has had several

interesting years recently, and with each reading, this passage reminded me that it is not about "me" or the trial at hand. Rather

it’s about God's call for each of us - to be there for the others in our life no matter of our life circumstances. We “Prepare the

Way for the Lord” through our many daily interactions by acting, listening, praying and serving others whether they are family,

friends, co-workers or strangers. Jesus certainly exemplified this during his times of “trial,” and as a Christian who seems to

continually falls short of attempting to model one’s life after our Lord and Savior. It is nice to be reminded - For there is hope!

And someday His Glory will be Revealed.

At first glance you might wonder how this logo relates to the message in Isaiah... well, here's my best attempt of an explana-

tion: The Trees/Forest represent life's dark spaces; the Crooked Path is the journey we are on leading to the Cross; the desert tan

Hill is a symbol of the desert (or desolate) place we travel through in order to arrive at the Cross; the Mountain top is the High

Point we strive for after we kneel and acknowledge the Cross before us; the Sun shines Light or goodness down on all of crea-

tion... And we are the guides in the wilderness (or world around us), preparing the way for the Lord, so His Glory may be re-

vealed in the life of others and ourselves!

The theme song for Men’s PSWTE 208 will be "Glory Revealed" by Candi Pearson-Shelton, which is essentially Isaiah 40:3-5

paired with music.

With less than a month left to go, there are still some open spots on the PSWTE 208 team (God’s Team). It seems as if filling

teams is getting tougher these days with the need to balance the enthusiasm of experienced servants and allowing opportunities

for fostering new leadership. Whether you are a seasoned Emmaus veteran or perhaps you have never served, Jeff and I encour-

age anyone interested in serving on this weekend to visit the PSWTE website and submit an On-line Service Request to complete

the team, and assist in preparing the way for the new pilgrims.

Many blessings to all, and may you go forth “Preparing the Way” in support of the upcoming Emmaus weekends! May the

Peace and Grace of God be with you all! DeColores, Kevin Dragon

Lay Director Thoughts — Walk #209

I am honored and excited to serve as Lay Director of Walk 209. I made my walk back in October of 2000, here at Christ Lutheran, my home church with my dear friend Karen Claussen, who is my ALD. What an awesome pilgrim-age we have had together on our 4

th Day these past 12 years. Karen and I taught together at the time but we did not

know each other that well. She is now the Godmother to my 2 children and surrogate Grandma. At Closura on our Walk I was so totally overwhelmed with emotion and love I was not able to speak at Closing. The thought of going to the podium at the time was totally out of the question. I NEVER imagined I would one day be in a place in my life where I could speak from the podium, let alone be a Lay Director.

I have had a lot of over the top wonderful experiences in my life and I have also had some devastating soul searching tragedies but I know that through each and every one, God has taken each and every piece (the good and the bad) and he has been designing a one of a kind masterpiece. And through each and every experience He has been de-veloping fruits of the spirit in me.

I now feel that I am at a place that God has equipped me to share my story, and to hopefully inspire others that we can do anything through HIM, and that “He is Not Finished with Me Yet”, so until the day he calls me home I will con-tinue to proclaim Him as my Lord, my Strength and my Hope. After hearing my story, a dear friend, Paula Dana, drew up my logo for me. I absolutely LOVE it and it captures my vision as Lay Director for this Walk.

Here is one verse from my song that sums up the theme of my weekend: “I can take even your greatest mistake, Every scar every tear every break, And I can turn it in to something more beautiful than you have ever seen, So lift them up to Me.”

I would ask that you would lift Karen and I and our team as we finalize all the little details in the next month. He’s Not Finished with Me Yet! -- Lyndi Reed

PSWTE Supply Trailer Update

Each person should give what they have decided in their

heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for

God loves a cheerful giver. II Cor: 9:17

As Gary mentioned in the last Gazette, following a careful review

of the costs of our current method of storing and transporting walk supplies, the Board approved the pur-

chase of a supply trailer. A special “trailer fund” has been established for community donations towards

the purchase of the trailer and its related expenses. The initial cost of the trailer is substantial, but as of

the end of August we have a good start with cash/check donations and committed payroll deductions for

a total amount of $2900. The amounts of Individual donations have ranged from fairly small to quite

large. Any amount helps and is greatly appreciated; many donors giving a small amount, a few giving a

lot, or a combination of both will get us to our goal.

The financial investment of the trailer will help the PSWTE community steward our financial resources

wisely by saving money on rental and storage costs far into the future. Please prayerfully consider mak-

ing a gift to the trailer fund now, or as you contemplate your year-end giving. One caveat - please give

to the trailer fund in addition to, not instead of, your regular support of the PSWTE general fund and

your local church community. And remember, as a 501(C3) non-profit organization, donations to the

Puget Sound Walk to Emmaus are tax deductible.

To God be the Glory,

Cheryl Goodwin, PSWTE Treasurer

*Would you like to be part of the PSWTE Board?* Several committee opportunities are available now or will be in the near future:

Facilities Chair North,

Kitchen Chair, and

Historian (maintain the master data base; must know Access and Excel);

We are looking for people to be a part of the Supply Committee to help load/unload supplies. If you are

interested or for more information, please contact Carol Decker (Cell (360) 969-1685,

Home (360) 679 7623, Email: [email protected].

Board Meeting Highlights Did you know? Request to Serve applications are now used for only for

the Walk you requested and are not passed to the next Lay

Director. The Board requests that you complete a new electronic

Request to Serve application for each walk you desire to serve

on. The application can be found under the Fourth Day tab on our

PSWTE website. Due to the difficulty in managing paper copies of

the application, we have discontinued accepting paper copies and only

the electronic version of the Request to Serve form is accepted.

Reminder: the recommendation is to serve on one Walk per year.

A motion was given, seconded and passed to move the Puget Sound

WTE banking from Chase Bank to Boeing Credit Union. This action

will save $15/month or $200/year.

In addition to General Fund donations, donations are also being accepted

for the purchase of the supply trailer, including its associated costs such

as taxes, license and insurance. Contact Treasurer Cheryl Goodwin.

The Fourth Day packet materials have been modified and most of the

materials are now available under the Fourth Day tab on our website.

The Board needs volunteers for several committees both as helpers and

committee chairs. Community members should contact Carol Decker or

Gary Buma if interested in helping out.

South Sound Ultreya Group

My name is Lee Chaffee-Birnbaum. I made my

walk in August 2010, Walk # 195, at Christ

Lutheran Church in Lakewood, WA. After

completing the Walk, I wanted to continue to

have the fellowship that I experienced during

that weekend spent with Jesus and my fellow

Pilgrims. I met with my two sponsors to ask

them where I could find an Ultreya group. I was

told there was not one in the area. That was

when GOD decided that Kristi Roy and I were

going to start a group in the area. I am sure

you all know that once God decides you are

going to do something He does not give up

until you have completed the task He has

asked you to do. The first meeting was held on

October 17, 2010.

We meet each month to give others the

support and encouragement that they may

need to grow in the likeness of Christ, and

reach out to lead others to the life of grace. We

enjoy His presence in fellowship as we share in

prayers, music, laughter, and service.

At any meeting we might: assemble Palanca for

a walk, listen to a speaker that wants to

practice their talk, support a Palanca boss

needing our help or others in need of help in

the community. As Jesus said, “Follow me-

feed my sheep.”

The meetings are held once a month on the

3rd Sunday at 2:00 PM at Christ Lutheran

Church, 8211 112th Street SW, Lakewood, WA.

98498. All that have been on a Walk to

Emmaus or Cursillo are invited to come and

share in fellowship, prayer and sharing the light

of Christ with others.

I would like to extend a special invitation to

the people who have walked years ago to

please come and share your time and talent

with the new pilgrims who have the need to

become more involved with the church and do

not know how to join into a ministry. This

might be an opportunity for you to extend

your hand to someone to offer their time and

talent to your ministry.

Please let us know if you have questions or

need more information. . You may contact

Lee at 253-651-8023 or e-mail

[email protected]. We look forward to

sharing in this 4th Day Celebration with you!
