For the next few weeks I was extra anxious for the mail boy to arrive.

Finally one day I got there just in time, the mail boy handed me the letter

and whispered “I’m sorry mam.” Then as fast as lightning made his way

down the dusty gravel road leaving me with a cloud of smoke and a

letter with the words in plain black print, that said

I fell to my knees, unable to weep or even to let out a single tear. I

felt like I had been frozen. I managed to get myself back together and

stumble over my own feet back to the house, where Liam lay sleeping I

curled next to him, and lay thinking. I’m not even sure what about, just

….thinking.

OPINION: Refugees. By Ian McKissack

At some stage in our life we all think

about what we want to happen when we

die. Some of us want to be buried, some

of us prefer cremation. One thing many

of us have in common is that we haven’t

told anybody about our preferences.

Planning a funeral is not an easy thing to deal with, so whatever we can do to make things easier for the people we leave behind will be greatly appreciated. There are many choices to be made when planning a funeral and often even the small decisions can be hard to deal with when grieving. So what can you do to ease the load on those left behind?Matthew Sadlier of Seddon Park Funeral

Home has several practical solutions. For !"#$%&#'&($&)"#&*+,& -!&,-'*.(/!& !#& !0/1&02#(!&the subject he suggests leaving instructions. “Over the years we have learnt the common questions people have trouble answering when organising a funeral. So we created a quick questionnaire designed to get you thinking about the important things. We suggest downloading the questions from our website, (www.seddonpark.co.nz) or picking a copy up '3#4&#(3&#'*.%5&6+.%&7#(&0+$)%3&!"%48&1%%9&them somewhere safe, maybe with your will. We can even hold a copy on record if you wish”.A n o t h e r

helpful approach Matthew suggests is to talk about your preferences when the opportunity arises. “Sometimes it is easier to talk about things as they arise, for example, if you attend a funeral it may be a good

idea to talk about what you did or didn’t like – in the very least it allows you to share some of your preferences” says Matthew. Likewise, he suggests this is a good way of starting the .#+:%3$0!-#+&)"%+&7#(&03%&"#9-+;&!#&*+,&#(!&about the wishes of your loved ones.

It may not be necessary to create a detailed step by step plan of what you want, but covering some of the big things like where you would like your funeral, where you would like to be buried or whether you would prefer to be cremated can be a big help. “It can be hugely comforting to your family to know they are '(/*//-+;& 7#(3& )-$"%$& 30!"%3& !"0+& ;(%$$-+;<&Matthew explains.

Seddon Park Funeral home is one of Hamilton’s longest operating funeral homes. Matthew and his team have a wealth of experience and see their roles as a calling to serve the community as opposed to a ‘job’. If you would like advice on planning a funeral drop in and see the team on Seddon Road, call them on (07) 846 1585 or alternatively you can visit their website;

.#+!-+(0//7&*+,-+;&)07$&!#&$!%4&!"%&=#)&#'&-//%;0/&-44-;30+!$&because of its proximity to Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Southern Europe has a similar problem with refugees from Africa crossing the Mediterranean, often with tragedies occurring in the process. These hot spots of the illegal refugee problem have developed various detention methods to check

the validity of the refugee’s case and decide whether to grant residence.

New Zealand’s distance from other lands makes an attempt at mass illegal entry a hazardous business. Recent new rules have seen us join the detention regimes though there has only been one attempt at such illegal immigration, by a Chinese group in a yacht. They were persuaded to stay in Australia. We have an internationally agreed quota of 750 screened legal refugees every year. It is not always met and has not been

exceeded for many years.

This area is one of the many areas of life where NZ, like many other developed countries, is possibly overprotective of its privileged status. We make a gesture, no more. As a personal #9-+-#+& >& )#(/,& "0:%& !"#(;"!& -'& -//%;0/& -44-;30+!$& ,-,& *+,&a way to NZ by sea we should welcome them. Making that passage would in itself be a strong indication of courage and resourcefulness. Such people could be more likely do to well than many legal immigrants.

Ever thought about what you want at your own funeral? Thank goodness for some decent

weather lately as we say goodbye

to another summer, one which

was disappointing for so long but

ended well. During the 4 months

of December to March the Club

income was consistently well

above last year when we manned

the Clubhouse with volunteers,

showing the need to have a

Manager on site for collection of

green fees, to sell golf accessories,

organise memberships, and

supply the aftergolf necessities

Mitch has worked well on our

behalf to achieve this excellent

result.

Mitch will continue to be employed at the usual hours until the end of May, that is 5 days a week with Monday and Tuesday off. For the month of June Mitch will work on the weekends only, and at times when his help is required. He returns to the U.K. in early July, and intends to return for the next summer period, commencing in late October. We offer our thanks for his help during his stay here, and envy his ability to avoid the upcoming winter months. The Club has been undertaking

a number of projects over the late summer and into autumn. The main drains on the 2nd and 7th holes have been cleared and rejuvenated to improve the drainage around those areas. We thank Peter Iti for donating extra work with trucking away the spoil. Also the top part of the course has been fertilised, a project well due after some years since the last application. Extra storage for *3%)##,&-$&(+,%3)07&0+,&?/%@&0+,&Frank Lorenzen are to be thanked for their continuing work on these projects. Now work has started to paint the Clubhouse interior to improve and freshen up the decor.

We have hosted weddings and family functions recently and will hopefully attract even more of these events. All of these projects have been made possible by good income from green fees and course / Clubhouse usage. Raglan Golf Club update

Waikato Regional Council is

reminding boaties using the region’s

waterways that failure to display the

right lights at night endangers their

lives and those of other water users.

The warning comes with the arrival of winter, bringing with it shorter daylight hours and the increased likelihood of fog. There were a series of near misses on the region’s waterways at night last winter and this has resulted in increased ad campaigns to educate water users.

“If you’re out at night, you must show a light. Failure to do so risks the

lives of those on board, as well as people on other vessels,” said navigation safety programme manager Nicole Botherway.

“Lights must be switched on from sunset to sunrise and during times of poor visibility, such as in rain or fog.”

Mrs Botherway said the rules applied to all of the region’s waterways, including rivers and lakes.

It’s illegal to use a vessel at night without the correct lights shining and skippers risk being issued an instant $200 *+%&'#3&'0-/-+;&!#&0,"%3%&!#&!"%&3(/%$5

Waikaretu – about halfway between Te Akau and Port Waikato – is a big ask for a social bike rider but we were motivated by more than just the challenge. Nikau Cave & Café awaited alluringly in the distance, three to four hours on, the promise of a cold beer and chips on the horizon.Meanwhile hubby and I pedalled our hardest, fearing falling

too far behind the six ‘real’ cyclists from Raglan Mountain Bike Club who we’d joined on their weekend outing. The Te Akau !"#$%&'"#(&)#$&(*+",(&"-&%'#-.!/&%0*&+,*)$&"-&1,2*$%"3*&!"43%'5&with snatches of azure ocean often awesome, the hills just plain formidable.I lagged on the climbs, breathed sighs of relief on the fast

downhill sections – but didn’t get too cocky for fear of sliding out and making a spectacle of myself. Parts of the road were teethjudderingly bumpy. But after three long hours our weariness turned to elation

when we came to a sign directing us to the Nikau Cave & Café just 1.4 kilometres ahead. Our oasis in the desert lay just a few twists in the road away. If someone had played an April Fools joke and changed the sign to read 10.4kms I think I would’ve died! Not many Raglanites seem to know about Nikau Cave

& Café, a true gem in the middle of nowhere. The allnatural kilometrelong cave’s been there, less than

an hour’s drive from Raglan, damn near forever of course – silently growing its impressive display of stalactites and stalagmites at the rate of one centimetre per 100 years. But it was opened up to the public only 16 years ago when owners Philip and Anne Woodward decided to diversify their 580acre sheep and cattle farm.6-%*'& 3*#'15& %)"& (*!#(*$& 7',38,38& 49& %0*,'& .+*& !0,1('*3/&

working the land and facing “too many farming crises”, says Anne, desperation forced them to share their bestkept secret with the world and market the cathedrallike cave that Philip had known like the back of his hand since he was a teenager.

But more was needed to grow the business, adds Anne. So four years ago the enterprising family went all out and opened a café with accommodation on the side. They were turned down by three banks before the Southland Building Society came to the party. The couple’s ambitious business plan became a reality within a year and now there’s no looking back.NIkau Café sits solid and rustic amid spectacular limestone

outcrops, like pancakes, reminiscent of a Peter Jackson movie set. In fact not far north, up Port Waikato way, is Weathertop Hollow from ‘Lord of the Rings’.And for weary cyclists, an afternoon spell in the sun on the

café’s expansive deck was true idyll. We gazed appreciatively at the stunning surrounds bordered

on three sides by a river and took in the lower decking – with its builtin barbecue and paella pit – running on to a large lawn where concerts are staged. We marvelled from inside the café at the huge picture window

in three panels which all but brings the outside in, inspiring a kind of reverence, and at the beautifully crafted macrocarpa slab tables milled from an elderly neighbour’s property. The café took on more of an

intimate lodgelike atmosphere that night with the woodburner warming us to the soul as we enjoyed Anne’s hospitality and excellent cooking. The others were booked in

to the onsite accommodation but we’d taken a separate cabin across the road so we could sample the full touristy thing. It would be nice to be able to say then that we’d headed up to our

wee cabin, ‘The Whitehouse’, to experience the outdoor baths by night. But sleep and only sleep was on my mind after, for us, $4!0&#&1"38&7,:*&',(*;&&<0*&=-"'%5>.+*&2,34%*$&#3(&%0'**&1"#($&"-&pinecones/wood” to heat the bath, as the instructions read, were a road too far.For we’d also toured the cave that day with Philip, who kidded

us real live kiwis had left their wee imprints in the silty surface – when it was only water dripping from above that created the effect. The hourlong trip through the black glowworm cave by %"'!01,80%&)#$&%'415&#)*>,3$9,',38&),%0&8,#3%&9,11#'$/&.3*&$%'#)$&#3(&?"),38&$0#)1$&#11&),%0,3&%#3%#1,$,38&'*#!0;But touching the fragile formations is a nono, to preserve

them in their natural state. Philip and family take up to four cave tours a day during

summer, about four a week the rest of the year. The cave – which has a stream running through it – not only gives Waitomo a run for its money but is arguably one of the best in the world for its limestone formations, accessibility and allnatural state. There’s not so much as a handrail to hold onto as we journey

through the underworld. In fact, for 10 metres after niftily squeezing between two rocks, we’re crawling in water on our 0#3($&#3(&:3**$&#1"38&%0*&!#+*&?""';&This is the real McCoy.The whole experience is exhilarating, as much for its

informality as its beauty. And it’s virtually right on Raglan’s back doorstep.

We biked back the next day, the 40 kilometres this time proving less exhausting than we’d expected. Somehow the hills seemed less daunting on the return trip. Jubilantly we arrived back at Te Akau Wharf to be ferried across to the jetty downtown in Raglan courtesy of local skipper Ian Hardy and his familiar bluecanopied boat. He’d also crossed us and our bikes over in two trips the day before. For the less energetic, the charms of Nikau Cave & Café can

be enjoyed by driving to Waikaretu, taking the road to Waingaro but then turning left at the Tjunction just before the hot pools. The Nikau Cave & Café website has three sets of clear directions, so you can’t go wrong whether you’re coming from Raglan, Hamilton or Auckland. The whole venture can be caught on TV One’s ‘Country

Calendar’ in a fortnight when the farm – now run by Anne and Philip’s daughter Emily Welch, a champion shearer – is in the spotlight for its very successful sheep stud.
