I was reminded how much beauty there is to be found in our own country while driving off the beaten track recently.

Here in New Zealand and in our district, we are privileged to live surrounded by places that visitors from overseas are blown away by – which is why New Zealand is on the ‘to visit’ destination wish list for so many international tourists.

I’m often so busy trying to get to my destination that as I drive, I miss the amazing sights around me, as I’m sure is true for many Kiwis.

So my wife and I decided that while we had a few days’ holiday, with no timetable to follow, we would enjoy our travel between destinations. We made the time to pull off the road and to stop and enjoy the scenery and magic around us instead of just passing it by.

Our journeys probably took twice as long as they would have during a working week, but by slowing down we gained double the pleasure.

This got me thinking about all the wonderful things there are to do and see in our district, many of which are free to enjoy and already hugely popular with visitors, but are sometimes taken for granted by us locals.

Hamilton and Waikato Tourism recently launched the ‘Explore Your Own Backyard’ campaign which aims to encourage us all to get out and explore what the Waikato has to offer – what a good idea.

I will be getting out more and exploring my own backyard, visiting places that maybe I have not been to for a few years, or that I remember from childhood.

These are a few places and attractions close to home that I will be spending time at over the next few weeks. The stunning Bridal Veil Falls, near Raglan, the Kauri Loop walk in the Hakarimata ranges and our west coast beaches - you can’t beat them on a good day.

I will not be venturing overseas for a holiday anytime soon, as what we have to offer here in New Zealand is unparalleled.

Raglan was described this week by Waikato Regional Council as a “quite weedy little town” – but the local community board has made clear it doesn’t see getting rid of one particular plant as a burning issue.

Councillor’s Column One of the good things about passing the shortest day of the year is you know that a long, wet winter is over and summer is on its way. Living in a great little coastal town like Raglan makes summer extra special. We are lucky people.Council recently opened the new wharf buildings after repair of the foundations. This has been a very long process. The foundation upgrade was scheduled for a few year’s time but had to be undertaken sooner GXHWRWKHLPSDFWRIWKH¿UH)XQGLQJIRUUHSDLUVand the new building came from insurance and the Harbour Board account (which is income from Council-leased properties) plus a loan. The new building marks the start of a new era at the wharf and I look forward to what develops at this attractive new area. I have received a lot of comments from friends and colleagues in Hamilton who are planning a visit to Raglan to look at our new attractions of the foot-bridge and the wharf. As stated in my last column, Council has completed the representation review of ward boundaries and has extended the Raglan Ward boundary to include Cogswell Road, Waitetuna to Glentui Lane, in the north Ohautira Road, and in the South to the Otorohanga District Council boundary. Council has decided not to extend the Community Board boundary as far as the Ward boundary but following consultation has extended it to include parts of Ruapuke, Te Mata and Te Uku. The Raglan Community Board has traditionally been focused on the needs of the town. The Waikato Enterprise Agency who run our Information Centre report that visitor numbers are XSHYHQLQWKHVHGLI¿FXOWWLPHVSHRSOHKDYHvisited the Centre in the last twelve months and in WKHODVWHLJKWPRQWKVYLVLWHGWKHQHZPXVHXPIt is hoped that the new exhibitions planned for the coming months will attract even more visitors. Well done to everyone involved in these vital facilities in our town. Thanks very much to those people who have given me feedback on local government reforms. I attended a conference on this topical issue at .DUDSLURRQWK$XJXVWDQGWKHUHZHUHVRPHJUHDWinformative speakers including Peter McKinlay from AUT, Rod Oram, a well-known commentator on economic and political issues, plus Bob Harvey, the Chairman of Auckland Waterfront Development. Details of the conference are on the Waikato Regional Council’s website. It is my view that a new structure of local government in our region will happen and I support that. I believe it will not necessarily duplicate the Auckland model but there will be similarities. An interesting observation that cannot be disregarded is that there is one council in Auckland for a third of New Zealand’s population and seventy-plus councils for the other two-thirds.Remember that all Council agendas and minutes are on the Waikato District Council website – www.waikatodistrict.co.nz,I\RXZRXOGOLNHWRGLVFXVVDVSHFL¿F&RXQFLOLVVXHwith me please contact me on:&RXQFLORI¿FH0RELOHEmail [email protected]

Worsps’ nest quickly has adventure-seekers buzzingTake pristine caves and unspoilt native bush, a waterfall, swamp and an old woolshed, spread it over 100-odd acres of a sheep and beef farm across the harbour at Te Akau, add a bit of innovation and passion for outdoor education – and you have the memorable Adventure Waikato experience.

Simon and Rosie Worsp’s bold

venture on their 700-acre farm – their

home for 35 years – has evolved over

time and supports a rural livelihood in

a way they could never have imagined

when raising their three young

children back in the ‘80s.

youth and corporate groups, many

of whom return regularly to play and

often stay.

“We’ve had some great years,”

says a youthful-looking Simon,

who’s not far off 60 but has barely a

thought for retirement. He’s too busy

dreaming up ever-better adventures.

The catalyst for development of

the farm’s natural resources came in

KH H[SODLQVZKHQ%URRNODQGVCountry Estate up the road was

With a network of more than two

get a laugh from teams staying at the

Then there’s the popular Jurassic

setting.

Simon’s now keen to see more

use of the great outdoors sanctioned

by Health and Safety NZ which he

believes is “running scared” of risk-

taking in our environment. Managed

risk is what it’s all about, he says, to

take advantage of the country’s huge

variety of geography and topography

in a condensed area.

“I see some wonderful acts of

courage (here),” he told the Chronicle.

The outdoors creates such a good

“melting pot” for people, crossing

economic and ethnic boundaries, age

and gender.

He points out there are kids living

in Auckland who’ve never even been

to the beach let alone the bush. “It’s

ridiculous!”

The enterprising Worsps have

interests too back across the harbour

in Raglan where Rosie has put her

revamped a few holiday houses over

the years but was also instrumental in

the art deco-style repaint of Raglan

And the recent wharf project has

been more than a passing interest for

Rosie who is delighted now at the

Waitetuna School boy Ronan Thompson dreams of becoming a “real good” snowboarder – and he’s well on the way after winning third place recently in the boys’ under 16 event in the Nitro Elan Jib Nationals at Turoa VNL¿HOGV

Now he’s set his sights on the Cardrona Grom Prix in October where the country’s best young

skiers and riders battle it out at the alpine resort for the SUHVWLJLRXV-XQLRU1DWLRQDOVWLWOHWKH¿QDOLQDVHULHVof comps run by Snow Sports NZ.

The 12-year-old – now into his second season of competitive snowboarding after placing third in last year’s boarder-X event – was up against 15 or so mostly older rivals in the jib competition, which involved two hours of tricks on rails, boxes and up a wall.

“It’s a bit like skateboarding but in the snow,” explains Ronan’s mother Lindsey Turner who takes turns with partner Andrew Thompson in driving Ronan GRZQWRWKHVNL¿HOGVZKHUHKHWUDLQVHYHU\ZHHNHQGwith Mt Ruapehu Snow Sports Freestyle Team.

Lindsey’s a “big skier” but Andrew’s had to learn to snowboard to keep up with his son‘s progress on the slopes.

While Lindsey’s “stoked” to see Ronan having fun and aspiring to the bigtime Winter Olympics someday, she concedes it’s an expensive sport and he could well do with a local sponsor.

As it is he’s had to save up and buy himself a decent snowboard, she says, from pocket money and winnings as the axe-wielding Once-ler chasing the Truffula Tree across-stage at Raglan’s Art to Wear show back in June.

Ronan’s lucky to have been able to compete this year, adds Lindsey, given he’s sporting a plaster cast to protect a cracked wristbone from a fall at the start of the season.

Postponement of the jib nationals by a fortnight played in his favour. Now it’s the slopestyle and boarder-X events to look forward to before the South Island’s Cardrona nationals, described as the pinnacle age event and covering all the disciplines.

With whitebait season starting on Wednesday 15 August, the Ministry for Primary Industries is reminding whitebaiters to Check, Clean and Dry their equipment between waterways to avoid the spread of unwanted freshwater pests that can clog nets and choke waterways, including whitebait habitats.

“Unwanted freshwater pests such as didymo and lagarosiphon pose a serious threat to our rivers, streams and lakes. Once in a waterway they can disperse rapidly and destroy the environmental, recreational and aesthetic values of our waterways,” says John Sanson, National Coordination Team Manager.

“Restricting your whitebaiting to one catchment only is the best way to stop the spread of unwanted pests. However, if you are going to be moving between waterways we ask you to Check, Clean, Dry any equipment that has come into contact with river or lake water – particularly nets and waders.”

“Some freshwater pests, like didymo, are often invisible to the naked eye and can be spread by a single drop of water. Treat every waterway as though it is infected – even if you can’t see the danger you could be spreading it.”

Mr Sanson says before leaving a waterway, people should check items and leave any plant debris they ¿QGLQWKHLUHTXLSPHQWDWWKHZDWHUZD\

To be or not to be, a vegetarian. Or even a vegan, though I’m not sure if that is a purer form of vegetarianism or a visitor from Vega but the star is a long way away so that’s unlikely. It is easy to dismiss vegetarians as cranks. After all, evolution is a series of life forms getting better and better at catching and eating each other. +XPDQV KDYH RQO\ EHFRPH SUROL¿F EHFDXVHnothing has evolved that can reliably use us as prey. That is except each other, and we seem to have banned that. Our compost piles are steaming thanks to your gorgeous green waste drop offs and the fantastic food scraps coming into the Recycling Centre from the food waste collection trial in Raglan West. Xtreme Waste staff are perfecting their hot composting methods using the collected food waste mixed with the mulched garden waste to produce a better type of soil conditioner.

We need lots of garden waste to run the trials so we are offering free green waste drop off at Xtreme Waste for the month of August. To take advantage of this great VSULQJRIIHUSHRSOHQHHGWR¿UVWFKHFNWKHLUORDGVLQZLWKWKH;WUHPH:DVWH\DUGVWDIIDWthe service area for measuring and they can then proceed to the newly made over green waste drop off area. We are really proud of our newly expanded green waste area, its so much easier for the public to use.

We are three weeks into our food waste collection trials in Raglan West and things are going well. Residents of Uenuku, Taipare, Nihinihi and Pokohui are putting their food scraps into biodegradable corn starch bags and putting them out weekly in lockable kerbside bins on Mondays for Xtreme Waste to pick up in the miniskip truck.

Xtreme Waste encourages all the people in Raglan West who received the bins for the trials to give the service a go. We can take foodstuffs you may not put in a compost, such as meat, citrus and coffee grounds. It’s a user friendly system, ask your neighbours, you can save money on rubbish bags and reduce the smelly stuff in your bags.

This research project will run for six months and is funded by the Waste Minimisation Fund (administered by the Ministry for the Environment), Waikato District Council and Xtreme Waste. If things go well Xtreme Waste and Waikato District Council may be able to offer this service across the whole of Raglan in the near future.
