NUrsEs COrNEr: WasH, WasH, WasH yOUr HaNds!

Did you know one of the most important things you can do to keep from getting sick is to wash your hands? During flu season it is even more important to wash your hands to prevent the spread of germs that would result in sickness. Common illnesses that can be prevented through washing hands includes: colds, influenza, food poisoning, Hepatitis A, illness that causes liver inflammation and gastrointestinal upset, and Rotavirus, among many other things. Wash them after going to the bathroom, helping a sick person, blowing your nose, handling uncooked meat and poultry, touching animals or anything in their enviroment, coughing or sneezing. There is also a “right” way to wash them. After applying water and soap, rub them together to work up a lather, for 15-20 seconds, or long enough to sing the Happy Birthday song two times. Wash under your fingernails, palms, and the back of your hands! Rinse under running water. Dry them with a clean towel, paper towel, or an air dryer. If these are not possible, you can let them air dry. If at all possible, use the paper towel to turn off the faucet and to open the door.
