EMBARKING IN ECUADOR ISSUE 3 | August 2013 The Quito Times Quito Mennonite Church Youth The youth, David and Alyssa during a June event. In June and July, David and I were able to plan/implement activities for the youth at Quito Mennonite Church. In early July at the congregational meeting, it was agreed that David and I work as a cohort to better serve the youth at the church. With David’s heavy load of the Colombian Refugee Project, and the success we had in planning our first activity together, the church families agreed it would be best to have us work as a co-team in these efforts. Please pray that we can reach the youth and work to break barriers that are evident within this very diverse group of youth – diversity in age, ethnicity, educational background, economic status, availability, etc. Youth Venture During the days of July 11-28, David and helped to guide and coordinate the schedule for a Youth Venture group. The group consisted of two North American leaders from Kansas and a youth group from Des Moines, IA (Christ Community Church). What a treat to be able to share with fellow Iowans/Centra l Plains Mennonite Conference members! Over the two and a half- week period, we traveled to five different cities/small towns surrounding Quito. We experienced worship in Quito, Riobamba, and at two indigenous churches. We were reminded that in these types of trips, we always receive more than we are able to give. David and I could not have been blessed with a better group of young people to share the experience with – they were open to the new culture, their homestays that varied in lifestyles (some families wealthy, some living in very marginal areas), the new food (they even tried guinea pig!), etc. It was inspiring to learn alongside them about this place God has sent me to; and, to see such young people, some out of the country for their first time to receive hospitality so openly. Surely the visit will impact their lives for years to come, just like my first visit to Ecuador did.

Quito Mennonite Church Youth

The  youth,  David  and  Alyssa  during  a  June  event.

Please pray that we can reach the youth and work to break barriers that

are evident within this very diverse group of youth – diversity in age, ethnicity, educational background, economic status, availability, etc.

Youth Venture During the days of July 11-28, David and helped to guide and coordinate the schedule for a Youth Venture group. The group consisted of two North American leaders from Kansas and a youth group from Des Moines, IA (Christ Community Church). What a treat to be able to share with fellow Iowans/Central Plains Mennonite Conference members! Over the two and a half-week period, we traveled to five different cities/small towns surrounding Quito. We experienced worship in Quito, Riobamba, and at two indigenous churches. We were reminded that in these types of trips, we always receive more than we are able to give. David and I could not have been blessed with a better group of young people to share the experience with – they were open to

Jardines del Inca

Pastor  Moya  at  the  Jardines  Del  Inca  church  plant  inauguration,  7/28/13.

On Sunday, July 28 a new church plant in the neighborhood where Alyssa lives was inaugurated. The church is located beside Alyssa’s apartment. In the above picture you can see Pastor Cesar Moya expressing the need for a church in our neighborhood. But, if you could see a picture from the outside of the building it would be evident – residents sat across the street purchasing/drinking beer during our 9a.m. service. During the service Alba (the Quito Mennonite church secretary), Oswaldo (Alba’s brother-in-law) and I were appointed to make-up the new church’s council so this will mean lots more work added to my repertoire. I am grateful for the challenges it will bring – and the step towards testing the waters of Pastoral work God has led me in. This week, I will bring the message – your prayers are appreciated! Please also pray for the challenge this new ministry and the Vida Juvenil ministry carry with them in a predominantly Catholic neighborhood. Because of the strong Catholic (baptized) presence in the neighborhood, it is often difficult to be received ecumenically as Christian Mennonites trying to do God’s work in Jardines del Inca.

Pray For…

ü Alyssa as she has recently had some challenges in adapting to the culture here. Pray that she can respect differences and be comforted in times when she feels alone.

ü The Vida Juvenil team of youth that supports Alyssa’s development of the new project! Pray for the upcoming inaugural workshop they will offer at the end of August to Jardines del Inca youth.

ü Praise God for the support Alyssa does have—in the Pastors, in her former host family and her neighbors/fellow church members in the Jardines del Inca neighborhood

ü Alyssa, Alba and Oswaldo in their new roles as church council members in Jardines del Inca. Pray for the new congregation and the constant challenges it will face in its development.

ü Pray for the Quito Mennonite Church as it faces a pastoral transition. Pray for Cesar and Patricia – their health and their future as they have decided to depart from Ecuador within the coming year.
