A cockade is a hat decoration. Have you ever seen a woodpecker wear a dressy hat?

It does have a black cap. The male even has a bright red dot on the both sides of its head, and these are its fancy cockades. It also has black and white stripes on its back, and a white belly. The stripes can be described as barred. You can really identify it by its large round white cheeks. It is about 7inches long and has a wing span of 15 inches. You can compare it to a cardinal. It has a beak, feet with toes, and is covered with feathers.
