The Quest for the Missing Duck
This is done so that it is easier to find information in one place, rather than running all over the library to find several sources of information. Every book has a label with its call number written on the spine of the book.
When searching a library catalogue you can use an author’s name, the book title or key words if you are looking for a specific subject
KEY WORD:A key word is a significant word used in an index or in a catalogue
Remember toalways check the catalogue or ask a Librarian before you run off to find your information
What can we do? There is so much information we
need to find!
We could ask these students to help us?
Hi students we need your help to find Dewey (our brother not the Librarian). We have worked out
what the clues mean but we need you to find the information or we
will never be able to get our brother back safely!
There are 10 clues, come on you can see them on the
next slide!
According to the dictionary a cryptid is a creature that has not officially been discovered, you find Lochs in Scotland where Uncle Scrooge comes from. It could be the Loch Ness Monster – but when was the road past it built? you can possibly find information under strange phenomena in General Knowledge.
Tyrant Lizard King? I know that there was a dinosaur called Tyrannosaurus Rex! So we need to find out when they were alive.
We could not find “lover of wisdom” in any book or encyclopaedia so I tried the internet and it said that it is a Philosopher. So we need to find books on Philosophy and Philosophers then try to find information on a Cave and who had that idea and when they lived!
Who was Goliath, what did he do and when? Maybe if we found a book about the Bible it would have information?
What is ‘Bedlam’ and what does the word mean? It could be a clue – we need to find out what the word means and then find out when it was founded!
I have no idea what “Enfermé dans le sous-sol de la Bastille au début de la révolution” - means could it be a foreign language? So we need to find books on languages to translate it
What does ‘cosmonaut’ mean and ‘void’? Well cosmos is another word for space and ‘cosmonaut’ sounds similar to ‘astronaut’, so maybe we should search for space exploration to find out who the first cosmonaut was and when they went into space?
We had no idea what the Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq was so we did a quick search on the internet which told me that there is a painting now called the Night Watch featuring the Captain. It was painted by a Dutch artist called Rembrandt – but in what year?
You will need to find out who the Brontes were and who their brother was and what relationship he had with the Robinsons!
We learned in history that there was an English King who had his powers limited by the Magna Carta – when did that happen (and where) You should be able to find out when that happened with a book on the History of England.
Wow that was quick! Let us see what
information they found! Come on it is this way!
There was a road built along the side of Loch Ness in 1933; soon after this happened there were a number of sightings of the Loch Ness Monster.
The idea of “the cave” was developed by a Philosopher named Plato, he lived between 423 & 328 BC
Goliath was a soldier of Gath who fought against the Israelite army and was slain by David – the future King of Israel.
Bethlehem Royal Hospital, also known as “Bedlam” was founded in 1247
The Tyrannosaurus Rex lived in the upper Cretaceous Period, 67 to 66 million years ago
The French Revolution began in 1789
The Dutch artist Rembrandt painted The Night Watch in 1642
On the 12th April 1961, Yuri Gagarin was the first cosmonaut to go into space
The Magna Carta was signed in Runnymede on the 15 June 1215
The Bronte sisters had a brother named Branwell, who, in January 1843 took up a position as tutor for the Robinson family
So we have found out where in time and space he is but how will we get him back to here and now?
Do not worry! I have called a doctor who makes house calls
Well back again! Sorry we are a bit late – ran into a spot of bother but all is well!
