Population and Labor Force

Davao Oriental has approximately 486,104 people (as of 2007 census) with an average population growth rate of 1.19%.  Population density is computed at 94 people per square kilometer.  The province’s labor participation rate is 72.70% while employment rate is at 94.70%.

Davao Oriental is the home of native Davaoenos as well as people and tribes from various places in Mindanao, Visayas and Luzon areas living and blending well in harmony and peace.  Dialects and languages spoken are Davaoneo, Cebuano, Filipino and English.

With literacy rate of 96%, the province has sufficient number of competent skilled workers and professionals who can be tapped by potential industries.

The remaining 17.05 km2 are covered by creeks, braided river beds, lakes and quarries.

Rice IndustryNationwide, the province is rated as one of the top producer of rice of different varieties and of good quality. The famous “Banay-banay 7-tonner Rice” is produced in this province. Rice is the major staple food of the province. About 70% of the populace is rice eaters and only 30% are corn-eaters.

Coconut IndustryDavao Oriental is the leading coconut producer in the Philippines. It produces an average of one billion nuts annually covering a total crop area of 156,837 hectares. The major products exported by the province through the International Copra Export Corporation are crude oil and copra pellets. Records show that export of 816,863 metric tons of crude oil and pellets from 1997 to 2001 is valued at $ 185.7 million. With the province’s advantages in terms of volume and area in coconut production, it can still explore of new opportunities offered by the industry both in the domestic and export markets.

Banana IndustryThe banana industry specifically the cardava variety is one of the priority industries of Davao Oriental due to its high growth potential. Based on projections, cardava banana chips export performance will grow at an average of 10% per year; local market for cardava in urban centers is growing as alternative healthy snack food such as banana cue, fried banana, turon, etc.; and, domestic demand for lakatan and latundan (both table bananas) is expected to increase at an average of at least 3% per year.
