97.5%
…is salt water
![Page 7: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
2.5%
… is fresh water
![Page 8: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Earth has 9.25 million trillion
gallons of fresh water.
9,250,000,000,000,000,000 (quintillion)
![Page 9: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
…but 69.6% is
Frozen

Globally, 1 out of 8 people
lack access to clean water.
![Page 14: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Annually, 3.3 million
people die from water related
health problems.
![Page 15: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
46% of the population does not have water piped to their
homes.
![Page 16: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
3.7 Miles
Women in developing
countries walk an average of 3.7
miles a day to get water.
![Page 17: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
The high cost of water.
![Page 18: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Getting the salt out.
![Page 19: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
16 billion gallons of water are desalinated daily.
![Page 20: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
300 million people get water from
desalination.
More than twice the number than a decade ago.
![Page 21: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Worldwide, there are 14,450
desalination plants.
![Page 22: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Why aren’t there more plants?
![Page 23: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
It’s VERY
Expensive
![Page 24: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
But… new technology has driven down the cost of desalination.
Researchers are now developing three new technologies that require less energy!
![Page 25: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
But, there are side effects
Desalination waste, a triple concentrated brine solution, is toxic to sea plants, small sea creatures that other sea animals and species are dependent on.
![Page 26: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Worldwide, dam projects have displaced up to
80 million people.
![Page 27: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
The weight of China’s 3-Gorges Reservoir, will tilt the earth’s axis by nearly an inch.
![Page 28: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Annually, more than 265 billion gallons of raw sewage were dumped into the Yangtze River and flushed downstream into the ocean.
![Page 29: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
The sewage is now backed up in the reservoir by the Three Gorges Dam.
![Page 30: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
More than 1,600 factories and abandoned mines are now submerged by the Three Gorges Dam.
![Page 31: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Environmentalists predict that toxins associated with these factories and mines will create a hazard for the animals and people who depend on the river for survival.
![Page 32: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
The Itaipu Dam in South America cost
$18 billion and took 17 years to build.
![Page 33: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Western states, especially California, are under increasing
pressure to find new and reliable sources of fresh water.
![Page 34: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
California’s pumps, canals,
pipes, dams, and tunnels serve
two-thirds of the population.
![Page 35: The Problem with Water](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110109/53ef1ed58d7f723c378b7082/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
