Student Attendance Our Premier has emphasised that while schools are open and able to supervise student learning, wherever possible students should be kept at home. Whether they are at school or at home, their access to the above online learning opportunities will be exactly the same. HSC 2020 The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is going ahead in 2020, and NESA has three important messages for HSC students: We know you are worried. While we recognise we are facing an unprecedented situation, we want to assure you that you will be able to get a HSC certificate this year, and that the certificate will facilitate access to university, further education and employment, as it has for students over the past 50 years. Keep learning, do your assessments as advised by your school, make progress on your major projects where you can and, most importantly, look after yourself, whether you are at school or at home. Reach out to family, friends and your teachers if you need to. If you get sick, your school and NESA have provisions to ensure you are not disadvantaged. The NESA COVID-19 Response Committee is aware of and will urgently provide advice on the following is-sues:

• work placements for VET students • students working on a group drama, dance or music performance • students completing projects and major works. Student Assessment and Reporting We plan to provide our school community with a revised assessment schedule for all Years 11 and 12 courses for the remainder of the year and let you know any changes for planned assessments for years 7 -10. Year 12 Major Works Year 12 teachers will coordinate suitable times for students to come to school and, working within social distancing guidelines, continue developing their major projects. We are waiting on specific advice from NESA regarding group based major works (e.g. Drama). Flexible Working Arrangements for Staff We have moved to a 30/70 ratio of staff working at school/home. On any given school day, there will be enough teachers to supervise students at school who are accessing online learning. The remainder of teachers, on a rostered, rotational basis, will be working from home to:

• Continue preparing and uploading learning material on Google Classroom. • Engaging with their classes through other platforms where possible. • Contacting every student in the school in a ‘check in’ phone call. These calls will commence

from Monday 30 March. • Engaging with the wide range of professional learning around online platforms • Revising assessment tasks and assessment programs

Other things happening at MHS On a much brighter note, apart from these changes to way we teach and learn, there are many other things happening at MHS:

• Classrooms and external spaces are being painted, new colourful noticeboards and new floor covering being installed

• Safety padding being installed into the hall for safer sporting activities • All learning and other internal spaces being cleaned and sterilized ready for our students to

return to an immaculate school • Some new machinery been ordered to be installed in our TAS workshops • Cooler classrooms due to commence • Bus shelters being constructed in the holidays • Gardens being further enhanced • Canteen shelter being renovated • Recycling bins being ordered to be installed around the playground

Thank You I would like to thank all parents and cares for your patience as we move to a new way of teaching and learning. We are a face to face school and we pride ourselves on our quality teaching and learning at MHS. Please know however, that we working extremely hard and highly committed to ensure all students can continue their learning remotely. Kind regards, Greg Armstrong, Principal

INDONESIAN

It’s been a busy term for Languages students this term in Indonesian. As well as having a plethora of new and exciting learning opportunities at our fingertips due to our school being part of our iPad Pilot Program, students have been exploring contemporary Indonesian culture, learning about themselves and their own intracultural identity, and connecting with teenagers from our Sister School, SMAN 5 Mataram, in Lombok (Indonesia). Mullumbimby High School (MHS) is proud of the partnership that exists under the Australia-Asia Bridge School Partnerships Program, and in late 2019 the facilitating teachers from each school involved in the program, Bu Mount and Pak Endang, were successful in obtaining a $15,000 grant over three years to further strengthen our partnership. The grant has already been put to good use with SMAN 5 purchasing their first ever Interactive Whiteboard, and hosting professional learning run by Australian representatives of the BRIDGE program for teachers in their region. At MHS, we plan on using the grant to help support students to further engage with their friends in Indonesia by supporting school exchange programs, and more. This term, we have been building new friendships by exchanging emails and Video Blogs (Vlogs) with the students in Lombok (the photos are of our awesome Year 9 Indonesian students filming their class introductory video). Through these experiences, our Languages students are able to put their Indonesian to practical use, deepen their understanding of Indonesian culture and connect with teenagers who live a very different life from their own. We have watched an Indonesian movie that was recommended by our Indonesian friends, and reported back with our own reviews and suggestions of Australian films to watch. As we move towards an online learning platform during these uncertain times, I encourage all parents and students to be regularly accessing our Google Classroom and Sentral Parent Portal. If a parent would like to be added to our Google Classroom as a guardian and receive either daily or weekly updates of what is happening in the Classroom, please contact me via the portal or email ([email protected]) with your preferred email address and I will organise this. I really look forward to staying connected with you all, and to an action-packed Term 2 - tetap aman dan tetap bersikap positif!

- Ms Sophie Mount, Indonesian Teacher

P&C Notes The P&C Executive team are working with the school and the Federation of P&C Association to see how we might support our school community and families in these unprecedented times of change.

The P&C Federation are constantly adding links and information relating to COVID-19. You can find infor-mation, links and resources on their website www.pandc.org.au, and on their social media platform. We are really thankful to our principal Greg Armstrong and the staff at MHS for also keeping the school community informed and up to date with the latest information and directives from the government in regards to COVID-19. Former Mullumbimby High School student Kirra Prendergast has much a wealth of information and handy hits for supporting parents to understand the Information Technology that many of our children confidently roam. You can click on Kirra’s website on www.safeonsocialtoolkit.com This week Kirra shares information about the second coming of an app called “HouseParty”. And just to finish with some positive news: We have been successful with a Community Building Partnership grant from the State Government. This will fund the installation of another Chubbler at the school. Thank you Laurel Cohn for all your work in securing this grant. MATHEMATICS THIS TERM AND BEYOND The Mathematics staff have been working hard to ensure all students have access to work during this period of uncertainty. The main access point for all work will be through google classroom. From here, students will be provided work through variety of new and fun online platforms such as:

• Education Perfect - An online learning program for all topics. Schools have been provided free access to the program until May. It is a helpful and fun way of learning Mathematics as simple explanation of each topic are provided before final questions.

• Quizizz - Online Quiz program that links straight to google classroom. Teachers will prepare multiple choice questions that students answer. When students answer a question correctly they attain ‘power ups’ which can be used to help answer further questions.

• Khan Academy - an online Mathematics tutorial program that has excellent explanation of mathematical concepts.

• Zoom - Online conferencing website. Teachers in the Mathematics departments are aiming to have one Zoom conference with each class every week from next week.

Helpful at home learning tips for Mathematics:

Make yourself a clean and tidy workspace you can use everyday If working from the textbook, read the explanations at the start of the textbook and go

through the worked examples. Check your answers to see if you have been working out correctly. Make a schedule of work (this could be similar to your school timetable) If you do not have a scientific calculator at home, download the app ‘Ncalc’ on your phone

instead of using phone calculators

A very confusing time for everyone. Let's work together and keep learning!

International Women’s Day—Celebrating 21 years of recognising inspirational youth leaders with an amazing line-up of guest speakers and panellists including:

Dr. Emilia Dauway is an American trained surgical oncologist and oncoplastic breast surgeon with 20 years of experience treating breast cancer. She was rec-ognised as Inspirational Woman of the Year 2019 for her unique holistic ap-proach to surgery incorporating yoga and mindfulness into patient care. Help-ing those who have experienced breast cancer live a quality life after treatment through mindful living. She believes in removing cancer, but also in restoring the entire patient physically and mentally. She is the author of the book, “Live Fearlessly: Liberating Your Life After Breast Cancer”. Dr. Dauway identified a need to educate regional women regarding breast cancer treatment options, especially breast preservation and reconstruction after mastectomy. She founded Restore More, a non-profit, that raises awareness and provides fund-ing for reconstructive surgery for regionally disadvantaged women. Emilia will share her story of becoming a “surgical yogi” and will inspire you to have the courage to stand in truth and authenticity.

Robyn Valmadre Throughout my career, I have made it my purpose to understand both my customers and colleagues, to a level that allows me to tailor services that exceed their expecta-tions. The same empathy and emotional connection that came naturally in my nursing role later translated into property sales and marketing in a way that allowed me to build lasting relationships. Relationships that have been the foundations of my success. In my past 25 years in property development, project marketing and sales, I have learned that success comes from delivering a customer centric journey all the way from brand discovery to final handover, focusing on the ideal end-to-end buying experience. Tips for parents to help gamers play - from our P&C Page Former Mullumbimby High School student Kirra Prendergast has kindly offered us the following tips for parents in regards to our children accessing online gaming: While we might be cooped up and isolated for a while any day now, plenty of gamers are going to see this as a free for all, which is concerning. The other side of the coin is that this is a way to connect with others when they can't do it in real life because of self-isolation. Here are some tips parents can use to help their gamers play a little more intelligently while we are isolating.

1. Parents, try to invest some time into their gaming, either as a cheerleader / fan, or a play-er. The benefits of being coached in their favourite game are very important. One reason is understanding the information on the screen, and another reason would be connecting with your kid. The tone of the conversation changes when they see you as a teammate and not an opponent.

2. Try to promote quality over quantity. In this case, suggest that they prioritise real life friends rather than their online friends for the next little while. Don't worry, they'll know how to connect with friends from school online.

3. Try to take a couple of days off gaming per week where you spend a little more time as a family being productive or planning something that can be done when you're out. In this case, even if it's watching movies on another screen, it's a different activity.

4. Help them understand that overplaying will take them beyond the benefits they think they are going to get from playing. Expect more frustration, less concentration and ulti-mately less fun.

Check out the intelligent gaming guide here: www.gameaware.com.au/gamers Limit gaming sessions based on these criteria:

A 3-hour session is plenty and beyond that they will start to feel the effects of overplaying. Stick to 3 hours as a max, take a day or 2 off, and they will find themselves enjoying their gaming time a lot more than if they were to over indulge during this tough time. GameAware offers an online family weekend workshop you can find details here: http://www.gameaware.com.au/online-group-workshop/ GameAware is offering a discount for online professional learning using the code "sosgameaware" see below for details.
