“The Pride of West Virginia” Woodwind and Brass Audition Information 2021 Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the 2021 Mountaineer Marching Band. Membership is open, by audition, to any student duly enrolled in the WVU’s Morgantown campus. The band accepts performers on the following instruments: Piccolo Clarinet Alto Saxophone Tenor Saxophone Trumpet Mellophone Trombone Baritone Sousaphone Audition Requirements: Scales: 1. Play your B-flat, E-flat, F, and C major scales ascending and descending from memory. The audition may perform one or two octaves as skill permits. 2. Play the chromatic scale ascending and descending within the comfort of the performer’s range. Prepared Music: 3. Perform “Fight Mountaineers,” Hail West Virginia,” and “Brooklyn” Marching: 4. Perform the following visual techniques. (1) Attention (2) Mark time (4), forward march (8) using 8-to-5 size steps while playing a one-octave ascending B-flat major scale. Sustain the final note until your feet come together on the 9th count. Quarter note = 84bpm. (3) Mark time (4), forward march (16) using 16-to-5 size steps while playing an ascending and descending one-octave A-flat major scale in eighth notes (ending on a quarter note). The performer should sustain the remaining (9) counts (which includes the halt) on the starting A-flat. Quarter note = 120bpm.
