Patrick Eaken Press Sports Editor [email protected] Two coaches with roots in the com- munity have returned to take over foot- ball programs at Clay and Lake. New Clay coach Mike Lee is the brother of Jeff Lee, who coached for eight seasons, resigning in 2006. Mike now as- sumes the same position that Jeff once held. But many local prep football aficio- nados remember Mike Lee for his role as Woodmore’s coach from 1992-98. But Lee has to fill the shoes of a coach who never really gave himself a chance on the field. It was originally announced last January that Mike Vicars, who led both Delta and Genoa to state playoffs and semifinal appearances, would be ac- cepting the assistant principal and head coaching positions. In April, before any- thing was solidified, he changed his mind and declined the positions. At Clay, Vicars was supposed to re- place Mike Donnelly, a Clay alumnus who stepped away from his role as grid- iron coach but remains athletic director. Vicars since has been hired as a middle school principal in the Pike-Delta-York school district as well as Delta’s football coach. The good news for Clay fans — the return of quarterback Josh Pennington (2,025 passing yards, 53.9 percent pass- ing efficiency) and 106 showed up to play football this year, including 20 seniors, 22 juniors, 27 sophomores, and 37 fresh- man. New Lake coach Mark Emans, a 1980 Eastwood graduate, knows Wood County and knows the school district he is now coaching at. It’s right up the road from the Luckey home he grew up in. “The Lake (coaching) job always in- trigued me – their facilities, the school’s size,” Emans said. “Being an old Wood County guy, I remember Lake always had tough, physical kids when they played in the Northern Lakes League back in the day.” Emans, 51, was hired to lead the Flyers on April 20. He is replacing Bob Olwin, who resigned after leading the Flyers to a 4-6 record (3-4 in the Northern Coaches Emans, Lee return Buckeye Conference) in his only season in 2012. They are not the only new coaches on the block — Brian Wical comes to Cardinal Stritch Catholic from his role as an assistant at Lima Central Catholic, a school that is feared by other Northwest Ohio athletic programs. Wical says that no one should expect him to turn Stritch into an LCC overnight, but he believes that success is on the ho- rizon — maybe this year. “We are young and that will prob- ably hurt us at times,” Wical said. “We probably have an advantage on our oppo- nents because they have no expectations for us. Because of that, I think we may be able to sneak up on some teams.” Otherwise, it’s the same two teams, Genoa and Northwood, which are picked to defend their respective conference championships. Genoa is now led by sec- ond-year coach Tim Spiess, a long time assistant under Vicars, and Northwood is under the auspices of veteran Ken James, although the Rangers are expecting a chal- lenge from Gibsonburg and other Toledo Area Athletic Conference teams. In the NBC, the Comets’ “bowl them over” offense is always a force, but their defense will have to deal with passing attacks from veteran quarterbacks Jared Rettig of Lake (2,838 passing yards) and Jake Matwiejczyk of Woodmore (2,112), who combined threw for nearly 5,000 yards and 55 touchdowns last year. Both are high efficiency, too, as Rettig completed 176 of 278 passes (63.3 per- cent) and Matwiejczyk completed 190 of 347 (54.8) and will be under the watch- ful of state media and college scouts. The same goes for Clay’s Pennington, who started his schooling in the Lake district before transferring. Waite coach Gardner Howard has witnessed about 60 players show up to play football as the Indians feel they have a chance to win the school’s first Toledo City League championship in about five decades. Meanwhile, Mike May is also look- ing for his first Sandusky Bay Conference title ever since showing up at Oak Harbor from St. Mary’s, Ohio, and May believes his Rockets have the athleticism to do it.

Coach: Brian Wical, fi rst seasonLast year: 1-9 (0-7, TAAC)Forecast: Cardinal Stritch’s philosphy on offense this season under fi rst-year coach Brian Wical is to keep the defense guess-ing.

Wical, the offensive coordinator at Lima Central Catholic the past fi ve years, said the Cardinals will run a lot of split back formations and a lot of motion in 2013.

“We actually have two keys that will make us successful on offense,” Wical said. “The fi rst is whether or not we can get con-sistent and effective reads from our quarter-back, both in the run game and in the pass game. The second key will be how well

our offensive line can stay on blocks.”

Directing the offense will be either junior Joe Sinay, the starter last year, or junior Chris Blazevich. Sinay com-pleted just 29.5 percent (23 of 78) of his passes last year, for

315 yards and two touchdowns.“Joe brings size and athleticism to

the position and is decent at running the football,” Wical said. “Joe has never been taught to properly read pass coverage, and this leads to bad throws occasionally. He is improving each day.”

Wical said Blazevich is “probably the smartest football player on our team in terms of pure football IQ. He is a student of the game and has great command of our offensive system and philosophy.”

The Cardinals’s top two running backs are juniors Austin Wlodarz and Ricky Pratt. Wlodarz rushed for 170 yards on 35 carries a year ago, while Pratt was a two-year start-er at guard.

“Austin brings a decent combination of speed and power to the position and is extremely smart,” Wical said. “He picked up all of our offensive philosophies quick-ly, which has allowed him to separate him-self as one of the top running backs on the team.

“We felt Ricky would benefi t us more in the backfi eld running with the football and in pass protection than he would on the line,” Wical added. “He runs with great power that makes him tough to tackle.”

opportunities.“Grant is a tough kid who will be asked

to do it all on offense,” Wical said. “He must block, carry the football and run pass routes. He is versatile and will defi nitely be an impact player for us offensively.”

Wical said junior newcomer Bobby Romstadt, who ran cross country last fall, has been impressive at split end.

“Bobby is a tremendous athlete,” Wical said. “He possesses the right amount of speed and athleticism that will make him a dangerous perimeter threat for us. There is no doubt our opponents will need to ac-count for his whereabouts.”

Three starters — Michael Outland, Ste-phen Materni and Cesar Baara — return on the offensive line.

“If they can propel us up front,” Wical said, “I think we have the horses to put some points on the scoreboard.”

Wical said Stritch’s 3-5-3 defense will focus on putting pressure on the quarter-back. The key to the defense, he said, is how well the Cardinals defend against the pass.

“We will pressure the opponent’s quar-terback a lot,” Wical said, “which puts a lot

of pressure on our secondary to cover their receivers.”

Sinay is the Cardinals’ lone returning all-conference performer on defense, earn-ing second-team All-TAAC honors as an end a year ago. Sinay, however, has been moved to linebacker.

“We moved him to where we feel like we will be able to take full advantage of his athleticism,” Wical said, adding that many of the offensive starters will also have to play defense.

“We have a few playmakers on de-fense,” he said. “Our front eight defenders are very solid and will provide us with a good defense, especially against the more run-oriented teams.”

Wlodarz, Curavo and Pratt return at linebacker after earning All-TAAC honor-able mention honors last season. Eddie Uher, a 6-3 junior, will start at defensive back.

“Our strength is defi nitely our line-backing corps,” Wical said. “All three of those kids aren’t afraid of anything, and they are tough kids.”

This year’s squad has 33 players, in-cluding 14 sophomores and 11 juniors.

Coach: Mike Lee, fi rst seasonLast year: 5-5 (3-4, TRAC)Forecast: The good news for the Eagles last season was that their offense scored 28 points a game. The bad news? The Eagles allowed more than 29 points a game.

Clay has a new coach in Mike Lee, who had great success years ago at Woodmore, but fellow TRAC coaches aren’t convinced he will have the Eagles competing for a conference title this season. The coaches picked the Eagles to fi nish fi fth.

“That will be determined at a later date,” Lee said of Clay’s level of competi-tiveness in the conference. “How much later? We’ll see. These kids are working to

be the best they can be, but I will continue to push them past their comfort zone. We do have high ex-pectations around here.”

Clay returns fi ve players who garnered All-

TRAC honors a year ago. Jarred Lutz was a fi rst-team lineman and receiver Kyle Row (43 catches, 723 yards), made the second team along with lineman Dillon Twining. Quarterback Josh Pennington and receiver Anthony Ramirez (38 catches, 411 yards) earned honorable mention honors.

The Eagles will use a spread offense and stack defense, according to Lee. Pen-nington returns for his second season as a full-time starter after completing 131 of 243 passes (54 percent) for 2,025 yards and 15 touchdowns last season.

“He started a few games as a sopho-more, and there is no battle (for the start-ing job),” Lee said. “We have a host of (fi ve) players working for the No. 2 spot.”

Competing for playing time at run-ning back are seniors Logan Davies, Keegan Mowrer, Michael Lee and Nick Stencel, ju-niors Ryan Fournier and Aaron Seymour, and sophomores Matt Stencel, Noah Baden-hop, Jarrett Witt and Alec Kulwicki.

“Fournier, Seymour and Witt can all play receiver,” Lee said. “They are running backs, but if I want to go empty (backfi eld) they can go to receiver as well. We’re still evaluating kids.”

Row and Ramirez, both seniors, return at receiver and will be joined in the mix along with fellow seniors Jadea Robinson, Jay Smith, Carlos Saenz and Curtis Hairabe-

dian; juniors Izaac Bonilla, Logan Chancey, Dalton Dudley and Tyler Mildenberger; and sophomore Lorenzo Levally. The tight ends are junior Blaze Okey and sophomore Eric Kovacs.

“They’re just working very hard to un-derstand the concepts and different routes,” Lee said. “They’re doing a heck of a job just trying to grasp everything. I’ve been throw-ing a boatload of things at them. We are optimistic about both offense and defense. The offense is new, so there will be growing pains, and the defense must get better. They gave up too many big plays last year.”

The Eagles’ top linebackers are Davies, Michael Lee, Nick Stencel and Mowrer.“Davies and Michael Lee are aggressive and read well,” coach Lee said. “Nick Stencel has a nose for the ball, and Mowrer reads well.”

Row, Ramirez and Robinson all bring back experience as defensive backs, and the list of defensive linemen include seniors Lutz, Twining, Tyler Dunbar, Joe Staudinger, Jake Woodrum, Antonio Zapata, Chris Hat-fi eld and Nate Durkovic; juniors Jacob Davis and Tyler Koester; and sophomores Trenton

Gast, Austin Kochanski and Sean Pecina.Lee said there is still a lot of work to be done before the season opener against Northview, especially developing team chemistry.

“We are still working to bring this team together as one,” Lee said. “These kids have been through so much over the past year, and our staff has put in a lot of time and effort to help make this transition easy for them. I like that they are believing and trusting in our coaching staff. These players have a great desire to win and they are learning what it takes to be winners. It doesn’t come easy.”

Coach: Jerry Rutherford, 32nd year, 196-127Last year: 5-5 (5-2, NBC)Forecast: The Eagles featured a young squad a year ago, but now eight full- or part-time starters return on offense and defense from that team, giving Rutherford good reason to be optimistic.

“We lettered eight sophomores last year, and that’s the most we’ve played since 1999,” Rutherford said. “Now they’re juniors and they’re all pretty skilled. These are guys who have played a lot of sports at Eastwood. We’re not real deep. We have 24-25 juniors and seniors, and if we’re playing those guys we’re going to be pretty good. We have a good sophomore class, but they’re still sophomores. If we have to play those

guys like we did last year, we’re going to struggle.”

The Eagles’ offense will again be under the direction of senior quar-terback Jake Schmeltz, a

three-year starter who threw for more than 650 yards and six touchdowns last year. Schmeltz, however, only attempted 60 passes all season, completing 34, with four interceptions. Schmeltz also ran for 217 yards on 49 carries with one touchdown.

“We’re going to need to be able to throw the ball a little more to be success-ful,” Rutherford said. “The last few years, we’ve strictly been running. Jake is a good athlete. He’s a point guard and a good base-ball player, and he’s a smart athlete. With our skill kids we have this year, we’re going to need to throw the ball.”

Eastwood’s running backs are senior Brent Schlumbohm and juniors Devin Snowden, Brennan Seifert and Grant Geiser. Schlumbohm was the Eagles’ sec-ond-leading rusher last year, gaining 678 yards on 117 carries, with eight touch-downs, and was a second-team All-NBC selection. The speedy Snowden ran for 406 yards on 69 carries (5.9 per carry) and eight touchdowns and he fi nished the year with 54 points.

“In our three-back offense, three of those four guys are going to be running backs,” Rutherford said. “They all are track guys and have great speed and played a lot of football for us on either side of the ball. They all have game experience and are pretty tough kids. None of them are very

big, but they are guys we can build our of-fense around.”

The receivers are seniors Michael Flipse and Jordon Faykosh, and senior tight end Grant Peters.

“Flipse got hurt after two games last year and is back and is a solid kid,” Ruther-ford said. “Faykosh is a basketball kid who came out for the fi rst time, and I think he can help us.”

The Eagles’ line returns two starters, both seniors, in center Jacob Rahe and sec-ond-team all-conference guard Shane Van-Vorce.

Defensively, Eastwood features a pair of returning second-team all-conference linebackers in senior Ryan Mang and ju-nior Grant Geiser, who led the team with 89 tackles including 11 for loss. Mang was second on the team with 88 tackles.

“They know the defense and they know how to play linebacker,” Rutherford said. “We’re pretty excited about them. They give us a good start.”

Junior tackle Caleb Tussing started all 10 games last year, and ends Michael Glaze, a senior, and junior Tyler McCrory both let-

tered last year. In the backfi eld, Snowden returns at free safety while Seifert and Schmeltz return at safety and cornerback, respectively. Flipse will also play strong safety and linebacker.

“I think we can have a pretty solid defense,” Rutherford said. “Our kids can run and they’re not afraid of contact. I will be disappointed if our defense isn’t pretty good. Last year we had six sophomores on the fi eld at the same time. Our kids have worked hard and they’ve got to be better.”

Rutherford said “I think so” when asked if this year’s team has a chip on its shoulder after failing to fi nish above .500 last season.

“For us, that’s pretty disappointing to go 5-5,” he said. “We opened with three losses and won fi ve straight. Our (young) guys played a lot, and right now we are so much better than we were this time last year. We need to continue to improve and get better and see what happens.”

Seifert also returns in his role as the Eagles‘ punter, where he earned Alan Mill-er Jewelers All-Press second team honors as a sophomore.

Coach: Tim Spiess, second year, 11-1 Last year: 11-1 (7-0, NBC)Forecast: The Kyle Nutter Era is over at Ge-noa, but second-year coach Tim Spiess isn’t pushing any panic buttons.

“This is one of the better teams I have had the privilege to coach during my 30-year career,” Spiess said. “I believe we have one of the most physical and fastest teams I have coached. As coaches, we need to continue to mold and shape this team. We have really stepped up our conditioning this year, and that says a lot.”

Nutter, an All-Ohio running back who had 230 carries for 2,058 yards (8.9 average) and 34 touchdowns last season, has moved

on to the University of Cincinnati. Nutter, the school’s all-time career rushing leader, helped the Comets outscore opponents

by a 525-113 margin last year and reach the second round of the Division IV playoffs.

Nutter’s replacement in the backfi eld will be a combination of his brother, David, Ryan Espinoza and Jake Wojciechowski, who combined for more than 1,700 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns in 2012. The only issue with David Nutter is that he was injured in a scrimmage with Tiffi n Colum-bian last week and may miss some time.

Genoa also returns both quarterbacks in Logan Scott and Kyle Edwards. Scott started six games before an ACL injury end-ed his season, and Edwards started the fi nal six games. The duo combined for more than 800 yards passing and nine touchdowns through the air.

“Both are excellent fi eld generals and both do an outstanding job in the class-room,” Spiess said. “Logan will be our start-er in week one, but Kyle will see signifi cant time as well. All audibles and much of our play calling will fall on their shoulders.”

Leading the way up front will be fi rst-team All-NBC lineman Michael Deiter, who in the offseason gave Wisconsin a verbal agreement to play for the Badgers in 2014. Deiter was also a second-team All-Ohio pick on the defensive line. Cole Beck and Nick Herrick also return on the offensive line.

Returning receivers Casey Gose and Quentin Spiess, a second-team all-confer-ence tight end, averaged more than 30 yards

per catch and nine touchdowns last year.“Casey, Quentin and Alex Hayes will

give us an outstanding group of receivers to throw to,” coach Spiess said. “Alex’s 2012 season was cut short due to a knee injury in week one, but he has a great deal of speed. Casey is the top return specialist in the area and the best I’ve had in my career. Quentin presents matchup problems because of his size (6-1, 195) and speed.”

David Nutter returns at linebacker after earning fi rst-team All-NBC honors a year ago, as do all-conference defensive backs Gose and Edwards. Kicker Cody Pickard, who had 57 extra points and 12 fi eld goals last year en route to earning fi rst-team All-Ohio honors, returns to handle the kicking duties.

“Genoa has had the top-ranked scor-ing defense in the SLL (2007-2010) and the NBC (2011, ‘12) since we arrived,” Spiess said. “That will be a strength once again.”The defensive line will consist of Deiter, Ty-ler Rozek and Blake Traver, but nose guard Max Reeder is injured and is not scheduled to return until early October. Espinoza will join David Nutter at linebacker, and the

secondary returns three starters in Gose, Edwards and Pickard. Quentin Spiess, who led the team with three defensive touch-downs last season, will start at either strong safety or defensive end.

“We have plenty of depth,” coach Spiess said, “with juniors Jay Nino, Tyler Baird, Blake Traver and Nick Wolfe ready to take their turn. We have high expecta-tions, and with this senior class there will be a lot of ‘good pressure’ placed on their shoulders. The most diffi cult thing is trying to replace the 2012 seniors, because they were such a great group of leaders.”

Coach: Steve Reser, fourth year, 9-21Last year: 4-6 (4-3, TAAC)Forecast: Just three years ago, Gibsonburg struggled to an 0-10 record. Since then, the Bears have gone 5-5 and 4-6, respectively, in their fi rst two seasons in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference, an indication that things are heading in the right direction for Reser and his program.

The key will be whether or not Gibson-burg can take the next step and establish itself with the elite teams in the conference. Competing in the TAAC with the likes of Northwood, Ottawa Hills and Edon, not to mention a non-conference slate that in-

cludes Fremont St. Jo-seph Central Catholic, presents plenty of chal-lenges for the Bears.

Thus far, Reser, a Tif-fi n Calvert graduate who played collegiately at Heidelberg University, is

pleased with how things have gone during the offseason and is optimist about the di-rection of the program.

Reser has eight starters returning on each side of the ball, and in close voting, TAAC coaches picked Gibsonburg to fi nish second behind Northwood.

“The kids have been working hard in the weight room,” Reser said. “The seniors have been with us since I got here. We only have six seniors and 42 guys (total); we have 11, 13 and 12 players in the lower three grades – that’s nice to see. Since I’ve been here, they’ve been working to get better and I think they’ll be the best team we’ve had. I think we’ll be able to put a competitive team on the fi eld, compete for four quarters and give (ourselves) a chance.”

Offensively, junior quarterback Matt Tille, a two-year starter and honorable men-tion selection on the Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press football team, leads the way. Tille, a dual threat, has given defenses fi ts in each of the past two seasons with his running and throwing abilities while consistently operating out of four-wide receiver sets. He gained statewide recognition by scoring seven touchdowns in last year’s TAAC vic-tory over Cardinal Stritch Catholic.

Last year, Tille completed 73 of 179 passes for 951 yards and 12 touchdowns, plus he ran for 878 yards on 197 carries

with 13 touchdowns. In all, he led the Golden Bears in scoring 80 points.

Among the receiving corps, Jordan Jahna is gone, but Isiah Arriaga, Derek An-gelone and Adam Copley all return. The other receiving spot will likely go to Sam Kohler or Alex Vargas.

Angelone caught 31 passes for 410 yards (13.2 per catch) and four touchdowns and the speedy Arriaga caught 16 passes for 304 yards (19 per catch) and seven touch-downs. Angelone and Arriaga were both honorable mention All-Press picks at slot back and split end last year.

The offensive line will likely include tackles Tyler Hovis, Jacob Auld and a num-ber of other players competing for the fi nal three spots, among them Matt Lutzmann, Alex Garcia, Skylar Shidely and Bob Kel-ley. Hovis and Auld are both returning hon-orable mention All-Press picks,

“We’ve had the same offense for a few years now and the guys have been working together,” Reser said. “We think they can do some good things for us this year.”

But the real key to Gibsonburg’s suc-cess this season will likely come down to

the performance of its defense. The Bears employ a 4-2-5 format that sometimes re-sembles a 4-4-3 depending on the look of the opponent’s offense.

The defensive line will rotate in a num-ber of players, among them Garcia, Shively, Jacob Auld, Brandon Campbell, Bryce Wright, Julian Arriaga, and Zack Hawkins. Auld fi nished with 50 tackles last year, in-cluding 19 for a loss.

Hovis and Josh Dyer are the team’s two returning linebackers, and the secondary, which includes the likes of Adam Papley, Isiah Arriaga, Kohler, and Angelone, will feature some players that play something of a hybrid between defensive back and linebacker. Dyer had 112 tackles last year, only two behind Press Defensive Player of the Year Nick Whitmore (114) from North-wood, plus Dyer had 16 tackles for a loss. Tille was also a force on defense, garnering 63 tackles, while Angelone had six tackles for a loss and 53 total.

Reser is excited about the return of two of his defensive assistants, Steve Hankish and Ron Bencivengo, and believes their in-put is key to helping the unit improve.

Coach: Mark Emans, fi rst yearLast year: 4-6 (3-4, NBC)Forecast: As far as Lake coach Mark Emans is concerned, the 2013 season is all about defense. The Flyers allowed 45 points a game last season and gave up 70 against Northwood.

“For us to have success this year, we have to become more physical on defense, more aggressive on defense, more disci-plined on defense and tackle better on defense,” Emans said. “Last year was very poor defensively. We will be better this year in that area. Dave Rymers, our defen-sive coordianator, and Greg Wilker, a past defensive coordinator here at Lake, have

done a outstanding job of getting our kids to play sound defense again. I am very happy with what they have done with our kids so far.”

Emans is an Eastwood graduate who had a successful career at Bowling Green State University and a brief stint with the Green Bay Packers. He comes to Lake after a successful stint at Wauseon, where one of his teams won a state cham-pionship.

He won’t have to fi nd a new quarter-back at Lake, with the return of second-team All-Northern Buckeye Conference signal caller Jared Rettig, an Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press fi rst team selection. The junior threw for 2,838 yards and 32 touch-downs a year ago, completing 63 percent (176 for 278) of his passes. Rettig also ran for 263 yards and fi ve touchdowns.

“Jared has great arm strength and has improved his footwork over the past few months,” Emans said. “He understands our new offense and has looked good leading our team. He is a leader, which is a must for the position. The other kids on this team look to Jared for his leadership, on and off the fi eld.”

Emans said he wants the Flyers to have more balance on offense this season.

“The success of our offense is going to be determined on how we run the ball,” he said. “Our passing numbers might not be as good as last year, but I believe we can be better offensively. Keys to our offense are someone stepping up at the running back position, and being physical on the line of

Lake Flyers (Photo courtesy of Innovations Portrait Studio)

scrimmage.”Running back candidates include se-

nior Nick Walsh, junior Marcel Bryan and sophomore Branden Short.

“Lake played all last season without a running back,” Emans said, “so they are still developing as we go along.”

The receivers are juniors Todd Walters, Zak Greenlese and Collin Lloyd, and soph-omore Adam Duncan. The tight end can-didates are seniors Joel Densic and Storm Lutz.

“While I know we have a very fi ne quar-terback and some quality receivers, I have always wanted to control the line of scrim-mage and control the tempo of the game,” Emans said. “I believe that running the ball effectively will help us achieve that.”

The Flyers return two All-NBC defen-sive players in Walsh (fi rst team) at line-backer and senior lineman Tyler Harp (hon-orable mention).

“Nick Walsh is our best returning de-fensive player,” Emans said. “He has a great motor and does not shy away from contact. He is what you look for in a linebacker. Lu-cas Lombardo and Tyler Scott have looked

extremely good so far on the defensive line. They were not Friday night players last year very much, but are we are looking for nice things from them this year.”

Emans said he believes the Flyers will have to learn how to grind out wins if they hope to become NBC contenders.

“Genoa grinds on people on both sides of the ball,” he said. “Eastwood grinds on people on both sides of the ball. Those two teams have won the league championship for a long time now doing exactly that, grinding on people. Our challenge is to do the same.”

Coach: Ken James, 28th year, 151-128 Last year: 10-1 (7-0, TAAC)Forecast: Coach Ken James’ Rangers have enjoyed a great deal of success the past three seasons.

James, however, will have to replace not only a two-year starting quarterback in Nick Russell but 18 other seniors who were instrumental in helping the Rangers go from 7-3 in 2010 to 9-1 in 2011 to 10-0 in 2012. It was just the third time in school history that Northwood fi nished 10-0 dur-ing the regular season.

Last year’s team, despite earning a No. 2 seed and a home playoff game for the sec-ond straight year, fell to Patrick Henry, 20-

19, in the opening round of the Division V playoffs. The Patriots also beat the Rang-ers, who have eight playoff appearances, in 2011.

“After losing 19 seniors from last year’s team, we will fi eld a young, inexperienced

squad this season,” said James, whose pro-gram has won or shared nine Toledo Area Athletic Conference titles in the past 12 years. “We have great chemistry, but it re-mains to be seen how we will respond to adversity. It will be crucial for us to run the ball effectively and stop the run on de-fense.”

Russell, who last season threw for 1,085 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 530 yards and two scores, directed Northwood’s wishbone offense to 47.4 points a game as a senior. He will be replaced at quarterback by either sophomore Mike Vallejo, junior Ja-cob Zieroff or senior Jake Davenport.

“All of them run the option effective-ly,” James said, “but they must improve on managing the offense, checking plays and protecting the football.”

Dominik Bermejo, a fi rst-team All-TAAC selection and second team Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press pick at running back and safety last season, is the Rang-ers’ top returning rusher. He gained 351 yards on 57 carries (6.2 average) and scored nine touchdowns a year ago. Bermejo had seven interceptions last year and was sec-ond in the area in scoring both offensively and defensively, totaling 104 points on 15 touchdowns. As a receiver last year, Berme-jo caught 13 passes for 328 yards for 25.2

Rangers seek to reload after 19 seniors depart

yards per carry, and scored on pass recep-tions four times.

Northwood’s top returning receiver is Jake Davenport, who hauled in 19 catch-es for 365 yards (19.2 average) and three touchdowns last fall. Davenport, a fi rst-team all-conference and second team All-Press receiver, will play running back and safety this season, according to James.

“Dominik and Jake are very fast and have the ability to make people miss in the open fi eld,” James said. “We expect them both to make big plays for us on offense, but they also can be difference makers as kick returners.”

Travis Whitmore, a second-team all-conference guard last year who stands 6-foot-1, 225 pounds, anchors the offensive line at his guard position.

Also graduated is All-Press Defensive Player of the Year and fi rst team selection Nick Whitmore, a 6-0, 243 pound lineback-er. Whitmore led the 10 schools in the Press area with 114 tackles, plus he had 14 tack-les for a loss.

Defensive end Kyle Corbitt, a fi rst-team All-TAAC performer and second team All-

Press pick, and linebacker Myles Habel are two of the Rangers’ top returning defensive players. They helped Northwood limit op-ponents to 80 points all of last season. On defense,

“Kyle and Myles have good size and good speed,” James said. “Bermejo and Davenport will also help anchor our sec-ondary.”

James, whose squad opens the season Aug. 30 against Green Meadows Conference school Ayersville, said with youth comes inconsistency. That will be something the Rangers will have to overcome early in the season.

“The big thing is that this group of guys seems pretty eager to be good,” James said. “That started back in the winter, in the weight room. We only have six seniors, so we’ve got a lot of underclassmen. A lot of times those guys aren’t that physically ready to play. They’ve done a good job get-ting physically ready, and that has helped us a bunch. They want to put their own stamp on the program. They seem pretty eager to get their day in the sun and get their chance to perform.”

Coach: Mike May, sixth year, 26-24Last year: 7-3 (5-2 SBC)Forecast: Despite having lost a number of key players from last season, including all-time leading rusher Mark Konieczny, the Oak Harbor Rockets expect to pick up right where they left off in 2012.

The team has just eight returning start-ers, four on both offense and defense, but those players are skilled. Ben Genzman, who moves over from fullback to tailback, will see the bulk of the carries this season as he looks to replace the production lost from the graduation of Konieczny. Gen-zman, who also plays linebacker, will team with fullback Cobi Brough in the backfi eld,

though Brough’s most known for playing line-backer, where he earned All-Ohio honors last sea-son for his performance. The other two returning starters, WR/LB Cliff Big-

gert and WR/DB Cole Weirich, bring with them experience and big-play capabilities.

“We lost a good senior class,” Coach Mike May said. “We lost our all-time lead-ing rusher, our top receiver and four of our fi ve offensive linemen, but I feel like the guys stepping in are doing a nice job. I like the offensive line — they’ve put the work in and they’re ready to go. Ben Genzman moves over and will play tailback for us and Cobi Brough will be our starting full-back. We also have Cliff Biggert and Cole Weirich back at receiver.”

Despite replacing four starters on the of-fensive line, May is confi dent in his bunch. The only returning starter, left tackle Aaron Hopkins (6-3, 240), will be accompanied by fellow tackle T.J. Lawrence (6-2, 265), guards Alex Heintz (6-2, 190) and Vince Szabo (275) and either Matt Laughlin (5-9, 195) or Josh Beckhusen (5-9, 185). Senior Josh Sarahman will play tight end.

Offensively, the Rockets will look to establish the run and hit some big plays over the top with the pass when the oppor-tunity presents itself. Oak Harbor has long been known for its rushing attack and this year will be no different.

The X-factor in all of this may be quar-terback Andre Ramsey. Ramsey, a junior, is athletic and could provide some problems for defenses with his running abilities.

Oak Harbor Rockets. (Photo courtesy of Woodard Photographic by Lifetouch)

“(Andre) is coming along well,” May said. “He’s probably the most coachable kid on the team. He went to some camps over the summer and he’s been throwing on his own. He’s put a lot of work in.”

In each of the last three seasons, the Rockets have gone a combined 20-10 and fi nished 5-2 in the SBC each time, just missing out on a league title and a spot in the playoffs in 2010 and ‘12. In the team’s three losses last year, the Rockets gave up an average of 50 points. In their seven wins, they yielded just 15.3. Oak Harbor, which runs a 4-4 defense, focuses, above all, on limiting big plays from their opponents.

The defensive line has size in the mid-dle with Lawrence, Szabo and Hopkins at the tackles and Dillon Glass, Brandon Hy-more and Josh Beckhusen at the ends. And the linebacking core of Biggert, Brough, Genzman and junior Jonathan Frederick has some big-play potential as well. Finally, the secondary has Sarahman patrolling things as the safety with Weirich at one of the cor-ners and Adam Swope and Kalob Vargas battling for the other cornerback spot.

“We’re pretty much a bend but don’t

break defense,” May said. “The strength of our defense this year could be our lineback-ers, which hasn’t been the case in the past. There is a lot of potential there.”

Things are never easy for the Rockets. Playing in the Sandusky Bay Conference, a league that features the likes of Perkins, Clyde and Huron, and having a non-con-ference slate that includes Genoa and East-wood, makes things challenging.

“We just talk about winning the day,” May said. “With our schedule, you can’t look ahead or behind. You just have to focus on each team you’re playing that week.”

Rockets’ athletic quarterback could be X-factor

Coach: Gardner Howard, fi fth season, 13-27Last season: 2-8 (2-3, TCL)Forecast: With three of its best players from last year’s squad gone and only seven se-niors on the team, the Waite Indians have their work cut out them.

Gone from last year are quarterback Johnny Douanglee, running back Cyrron Barringer and wide receiver Charles Smith, all of whom earned fi rst-team City League honors for their efforts last season, as well as Will Jensen, one of the key offensive lineman.

Barringer received Alan Miller Jew-elers All-Press second team accolades at defensive back last year, while Douanglee completed 120 of 219 passes (52.8 per-

cent) for 1,476 yards and eight touchdowns, plus he ran for 438 yards and four touchdowns out of the spread offense. They led an offense that scored 202 points last year.

In all, the Indians have 14 returning starters, seven on both sides of the ball. The team has roughly 60 players, including 35 freshman as a result of freshman football being added to the City League’s list of ex-tracurricular activities.

At quarterback, senior Tony Smith, a second-team CL selection at linebacker last season, will split time with Jeremy Pratt, a transfer from St. Francis. On defense, Smith had 83 tackles last year, including 11 for a loss, and at six foot, 185 pounds, he will return at linebacker.

Returning to a spread offense that features four wide receivers and just one running back, the starting back will be sophomore Anthony Ashford. A quintet of receivers in Tyler Slawski, Danny Powell, Diondre Irish, Alex Heslet and Kevontae King will be the team’s primary receivers in an offense that passes the ball roughly 80 percent of the time. Slawski, a 5-11, 160 senior, caught 21 passes for 251 yards (12.1 per catch) and one touchdown last year.

The offensive line, while young, is ex-perienced and sizable. Aside from center Nick Jensen (5-foot-8, 155), the other line-men all weigh at least 235 pounds, among them the guards, Jesus Benavidez (6-0, 255) and Noah Paprocki (5-10, 240) and the tackles, Javon Sanson (6-1, 235) and Darnae

Waite Indians. (Press photo by Pat Eaken)

Higgs (6-1, 295).“We have chemistry — the kids have

worked well together all summer during weightlifting,” said Head of Football Oper-ations Shane Kokensparger. “We have posi-tive attitudes and our attitude is a plus. Our weakness, though, is our depth.”

The base defense, which is a 3-4, has a lot of players who also play offense. Elias Moreno anchors the line at nose guard while the rest of the defensive line and the linebackers will be led by committee. Along with Smith, Ashford, Javon Sanson, Jeremy Zervas, Darnae Higgs and Brett Brumfi eld all will see action.

In the secondary, King and Juan Ro-man will play corner with Pratt, Irish and Powell seeing time at safety.

“Things have looked good,” Ko-kenspager said. “It’s a learning curve with such a young team. They’re staying moti-vated, they’re showing up everyday; atten-dance has increased. It’s a matter of prepar-ing the kids — we’re trying to teach self respect and character to the kids, positive infl uence versus all the Xs and Os. We’ve brought some new coaches on board this

year to help out.”The non-conference schedule, which

is fi ve games, is quite challenging. Waite opens on the road against Genoa and also plays Bellevue, the Division III state run-ner-up last season, as well as east side rival Clay in the Oil Barrel Trophy game at Ted Federici Field, Clay Memorial Stadium. On top of that, the Indians must make a three-hour trip to Dover for a non-league game. As Waite and Scott high schools are both close to celebrating 100 years, they will pair off in their historic football game at Mollenkopf Stadium on October 25.

Coach: Britton Devier, fi fth yearLast year: 4-6 (2-5, NBC)Forecast: Fifth-year coach Britton Devier is banking on experience playing a key role in the Wildcats’ success in 2013.

“Many of the seniors are three-year starters and have gone through the hard knocks,” Devier said. “They make up the core of the closest team we have had in our four years at Woodmore. Top to bottom, we are a Wildcat football family.”

The Wildcats have a manageable ear-ly-season schedule this year, with games against Port Clinton and Cardinal Stritch Catholic, but it gets much more diffi cult after that. Woodmore faces Tiffi n Calvert,

which has reached the state playoffs the last two years, in week three be-fore taking on Eastwood, Lake, Elmwood and Ross-ford to begin NBC play.

Last year’s Wild-cats scored 27.6 points a

game but allowed 34.7 a game, and just two All-Northern Buckeye Conference players return in senior quarterback Jake Matwiejc-zyk and senior cornerback/receiver Evan Ulinski.

Matwiejczyk completed 190 of 347 (54.8 percent) passes for 2,112 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior, and he rushed for 910 yards and 11 touchdowns on 185 carries in the Wildcats’ spread offense, plus he scored 67 points. He was an honorable mention All-Press pick behind then-Lake sophomore Jared Rettig and Northwood se-nior Nick Russell in a season that saw fi ve local signal callers throw for over 1,000 yards. This will be Matwiejczyk’s chance to get to the top of that list.

“Jake is a second-year starter and is a dual threat,” Devier said. “He is good at run-ning our quick (passing) game and also run-ning the football, but he needs to improve his down-the-fi eld throws. Our offense must get fi rst downs and we must limit turnovers and run the ball more effectively.”

Ulinski is not only a stout defender, he is also Woodmore’s top returning pass catcher. He caught 43 passes for 534 yards and nine touchdowns a year ago and fi n-ished with Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press second team accolades. Devier said Ulinski and sophomore Zach Sandwisch will make

things diffi cult for opposing secondaries this season.

“Evan runs excellent routes and has good hands,” Devier said. “Zach Sandwisch will be playing full time on offense this year after spotting time last season. He is big, strong and fast and has good hands.”

Senior Tony Rozzi returns at running back after rushing for 225 yards on 51 car-ries with two touchdowns, plus he caught 23 passes for 167 yards (7.3 per catch) and three touchdowns.

For Woodmore to be competitive this season, Devier said the Wildcats’ defense must be able to stop the run. Helping in that department will be senior outside linebacker Brad Bringman (5-11, 180), in-side linebackers Tony Rozzi (5-10, 170), a senior, and Sandwisch, and senior corner-back Dan Sprinski. Ulinski returns after garnering second team All-Press honors at conerback last year, where he got 41 tack-les, including 5.5 for a loss, while Rozzi had 9.5 tackles for a loss. As a freshman last year, the 6-2, 205 Sandwisch had 52.5 tackles, including 11 for a loss.

“Bringman worked hard in the weight

room to fi ght for the position,” Devier said. “Rozzi is a hard-nosed player who never quits and is someone who always rallies the team. Zach is a rising sophomore who will be a major contributor again this year. Sprinski is a shutdown corner who helps anchor the back end of our defense.

“Our defense will be improved over last year. We return several starters and will be playing 8-9 seniors.”

Returning at kicker and receiver is se-nior Malachi Brown, who also starred on the soccer team last year. He was a second team All-Press place kicker last year.

The Wildcats have added a local con-nection in playing Toledo Area Athletic Conference member Stritch in a non-league game at Ted Federici Field, Clay Memorial Stadium, on September 6. The 'Cats NBC contest hosting Lake on September 27 will be telecast by Toledo Sports Radio, which will air the game the following afternoon on Channel 13-2. That contest will also air live on internet radio station WRSCsports.com. The game will showcase both Rettig and Matwiejczyk in a promised two-way air attack.
