I know that there has been follow-up from those in our area with each of the two speakers since the meetings took place to further pursue each technology. I am encouraged by this and expect it to continue with future meetings.I am excited as we embark on the next four monthly meetings as they will contain a wealth of information to further train our local industry on critical topics that I feel there is either a lack of understanding and/or use of currently. TeCHnICAL RePoRT Value of Retrofitting A Machine With A Robot

Most business leaders in manufacturing will agree that the eco-nomic recovery has been in progress for many months. Proposal activity is surging and orders are beginning to roll in again for the strong companies that have survived.

Fulfilling these new orders is not as straightforward as it once was. The context of the manufacturing business in the U.S. has changed. Global competitive pressure has been present for a long time now, but the economic downturn has forced companies to become very lean, both with equipment and manpower. With the prospect of new business that requires growth, we must rethink old assumptions and ask if there is a way to become more efficient and competitive in the world marketplace. How can a company do more with existing equipment and manpower?

Robotic automation is one of the solutions that can improve ef-ficiency of manufacturing. As production requirements increase, robots can be used to efficiently tend existing machines for medium and large lifetime production volumes. Companies that currently produce parts with machine tools, injection molding, die casting or other machine-oriented processes should consider retrofitting with robotics for machine tending.

Why consider automation instead of just adding machine or per-sonnel capacity? Robotics can act as a “force multiplier” for existing production resources. Once the robotic application is set up, the cost of running a production operation 8, 16, or 24 hours does not change much. Adding an extra shift of personnel requires effort of hiring, training, supervision, wages and all the associated overhead. After the robotic process is set up, the quality and repeatability of the process is very reliable.

As the economy heats up, production planning is not easily pre-dicted by you or your customers. In an environment of wildly varying manufacturing volumes, automation makes even more sense. Fol-low-up production runs require only that the robot needs to be load-ed with the tooling and program for the product; then the run starts.

SeT-up: Setting up automation does not happen instantly. It requires planning, design and programming. Waiting until the big order comes in before thinking about the automation is a mis-take. Instead, consider the type of production you do and create a

strategy of how robotics can be utilized in a general way for these products.

SeleCTion: Choosing a robot with a PC-based controller can provide the flexibility for future expansion as your busi-ness needs change. Consider the details of tooling design and robotic programming as part of your proposal process. Docu-ment set-up procedures for easy replication in future runs. Be smart and plan ahead so when the order arrives, you are pre-pared to move fast.

MAChine ReTRofiT: Retrofitting an existing machine can be simple or complex, depending on the goal. The robot will need to communicate with the machine in order to coordinate actions. For a simple process, it may need only a start-and-stop signal. More complicated processes will need signals passed to the machine and response signals received back.

Find out what capability your machine has for interfacing with a robot. It may be necessary to upgrade the machine with an external control option. Injection molding machines typical-ly use an industry standard SPI interface. Machine tools are less standardized. They may require control signals like Start Cycle, Stop, Open Door, Close Door, Open Jig, Close Jig and Error Codes. Planning and upgrading the controls interface is an important preparation task that could be done in advance of the projects that require automation.

plAnning: Starting automation planning early is important. Part of the process is building the skills of your team. In-depth training can help change the corporate culture from thinking “robotics is frightening” to “robotics is our way to stay a strong competitor”. Designating an automation champion within your organization can facilitate training and knowledge transfer.

Management needs to leave behind the old short-term thinking and adopt a long-term strategy for success. Instead of asking “How can I maximize profit from this opportunity?” think “How can I position my company to be more scalable and effi-cient for the future and profit from every opportunity?” Becom-ing more efficient is the best way to ensure long-term survival.

The NWPA SPE Board of Directors Meeting was held on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Plastikos. The meeting was called to order at 5.41 p.m. with eleven members present: Shelly Czulewicz, Mark DeHaven, Lucy Lenhardt, Denny Sanders, Brian Young, Mason Myers, Rob Cooney, Lynzie Collard, Jason Williams, David St. George, Trevor Thorwart. The 2010 - 2011 Section President, Rob Cooney, started the meeting by introducing the Board.

Secretary’s Report – Previous minutes submitted for review and subsequent approval. Brian motioned to accept, motion seconded by Mason. Approved without changes. Lucy received a check from Rhetech Color for newsletter ads and gave it to Dennis.Treasurer’s Report – Dennis reported on the success of the golf outing fundraiser. Gross income was $14723, Expenses were $7899, leaving a Net of $6824; with a few minor transactions still outstanding. Dennis motioned that we again donate three, $1000 Penn State student scholarships in December. Rob seconded, ayes have it and motion passed. Lucy will distribute scholarship applications. We may add Past President’s night back into the coming schedule. We are also looking at the possibility of making a permanently endowed NWPA SPE student scholarship. Taxes need to be filed this month but National did not send the forms. Dennis will follow up and get those done. Gift card sale at Scott Enterprises is in November – buy one get one half off. This is a 25% savings when we use them at Quaker Steak and Lube to pay for our dinner meeting. Dennis was approved to purchase cards at the sale, up to $500, to be used in the coming program year. The subject came up about moving the golf outing back to Culbertson Hills. The Riverside is very nice, but we have had issues with the dinner catering. Do we want to move the outing? Mark made a motion to approve the move if that is what Dennis decides is best. Shelly seconded, ayes have it and motion passed. It was agreed that the Board will go along with whatever decision Dennis makes regarding location of the 2011 golf outing. Dennis asked for input from the plastics alum after they have their golf outing next week at Culbertson Hills. Upcoming budget items include Council trip.Newsletter Report – Changes were made to the front cover of the newsletter, as well as some interior redesign. There will be monthly student reports and we will be highlighting companies with a business profile section. Any company that is interested in be featured, has a technical article or would like to see a particular technical subject, please see Rob Cooney. Also, if anyone comes across an article that they feel would be a good one to reprint in the newsletter, let Rob know. The newsletter needs to go out earlier, so be sure to get your information in by the first of the month deadline. EESC – membership has been paid for this year.Council Report – Minutes from the last Council meeting have been sent to Cathy. The next meeting is in Connecticut and Brian will attempt to attend that meeting via remote. This is something new that National is trying. At the last meeting SPE was looking at different models of operation, including changes of responsibility and resources to the local sections.Publicity Report – pictures were sent in to the newsletter.Membership Report – we reviewed the survey results, but not all data was in, so we may need to have the results re-tabulated and go over them again.Special Events – we covered the golf outing information already in the Treasurer’s report. One other note was that some of the signs were blowing in the wind and all of them will need

foamboard backer. Next year we will need to purchase additional foamboard for the signage. If anyone has ideas for the Christmas Dinner, please let Jason know and he will book a place.Program Report – September meeting is scheduled at Behrend with a presentation on liquid silicone rubber followed by a lab demonstration. October meeting is two shot molding. November meeting is waiting on speaker confirmation. Some topics for upcoming meetings are medical molding, PMDI (Cleveland 2010), BPA and phlatates, statistical processing, part or product design and business and marketing of your company.Advertising Report – no report, but the golf outing did very well.Student Chapter Report – Jon said the Penn State plastics student chapter will have a representative at the Board meetings and will be writing a student chapter article for the newsletter.Awards Chair – Member of the year committee is soliciting nomineesOld Business – none New Business – We discussed offering a scholarship for eligible children of section members. This would be a new member benefit, modeled after similar ones offered by other sections (Palisades….). Rob motioned to approve the new scholarship, Mark seconded the motion, ayes have it and motion passed. Lucy will follow up with a preliminary application for this. More information will come in the newsletter. Brian motioned to adjourn, motion seconded by Mark. Meeting adjourned at 7.16 pm.

The Northwestern Pennsylvania Section S12 of the Society of Plastics Engineers is pleased to announce the formation of a new scholarship. This scholarship is intended to reward outstanding high school students with a one-time monetary donation up to $1000 to be used to further their education. This Award is available only to NWPA SPE member’s children who are currently high school seniors. The application deadline is MAY 1, 2011. If you, or an SPE member you know, has a high school senior who is planning to attend college in the coming year, we encourage you to apply.
