21st LWML Kansas District PresidentPlanting + Water = God Gives the Growth!

Greetings, LWML Sisters-in-Christ!

We have a family tradition of growing amaryllis bulbs to bloom at Christmas. My grandma used to grow these, and now my mother gives all of us a bulb to plant in time for blooms at Christmas. They are simple to grow and are readily available at many different stores. I have continued the tradition in my classrooms, usually getting 4-5 plants for each grade to have “their own”. You plant the bulb in the soil and pot that comes with it, water it, and voila, in about six weeks you have an amazingly beautiful flower, often with four blooms on one stem.

At Christmas 2015, we had 12 bulbs between my schools and our family. But only three bloomed! That had never happened before. What went wrong? They were all planted at the same time and received the same amounts of water and sunshine. The students were disappointed, and I was puzzled. Occasionally, I had ONE not bloom, but have 75% not flower? That was unheard of! Still, I kept watering them off and on because the green leaves brought color to my classroom. But guess what happened? FOUR more of those bulbs are almost ready to bloom—approximately 16 MONTHS after they were “supposed” to! My students are thrilled they have amaryllis flowers this spring! This was a HUGE lesson in patience and a reminder to me of Paul’s words to the early Christians as told in 1 Corinthians 3:6: “God gave the growth.”I teach eleven second through sixth grade students in Fusion/Midweek class. Four are LCMS members, and the rest have backgrounds from other denominations or are unchurched. They are at all stages of their Bible knowledge and in their faith walk. I can plant seeds of knowledge through teaching Bible stories and introducing Christian music. Their faith is watered through learning Bible verses and other memory work and by our prayers for them. But GOD gives the growth of their faith. ONLY GOD. The same is true in our LWML groups. We can plant seeds of faith and service by inviting new members and through uplifting and encouraging each other. We can water that

It has been a brutal few weeks with raging wildfires across several states. Lives have been lost. The total loss in grass, structures, fences, livestock and wildlife is almost impossible to count. Many of us know people who have been directly affected. Our Pastor’s Lenten sermons come from the Old Testament book of Job reminding us that we are not the only ones who endure trials, that God is in control, and that through all things—ALL THINGS—we are to proclaim, “Blessed be the name of the LORD.” Along with others in the holy Christian church, we pray for sunshine and rain for the grass to be restored so that life of livestock and wildlife can be sustained. Let us not be impatient, but let us also pray that God will grant growth in the faith of those affected, in our own faith, and in opportunities to witness through these adversities.

“The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” There are times where good desires don’t work out into worthy actions. Here is a great example from the past:

It is so easy for us to mistake good thoughts for good deeds. God want us to have pure minds, and He wants us to “bring forth fruits of repentance.” (Matthew 3:8) Jesus told His disciples to “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:16-20) God’s expectations exceed our ability. To exceed the righteousness of the teachers of the law was to be morally pure in every way. Our heavenly Father wants us to be so perfect that there are no faults within us. We are found guilty, unless Christ Jesus is our righteousness. The Savior was perfect in intentions, perfect in speech, and perfect in his deeds. He offers His righteousness to all who will look to Him. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.” Jesus said. Then He continued, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Through this season of Lent, we often think about how we should live, but let us not forget that Christ lived for us, and how He wants to live within us.

Winston Churchill hailed a cab in the west end and told the cabbie to hurry to the BBC studios. The Prime Minister was scheduled to make a speech to the world. “Sorry, sir,” said the cab driver. “You’ll have to get another cab. I can’t go that far.” Mr. Churchill was surprised and asked the driver why his operations were so limited. “They hain’t hordinarily sir,” he apologized, “But ye see sir, Mr. Churchill is to broadcast in an hour, and I want to get ’ome to ’ear ’im.” Churchill was so pleased that he handed the man a pound note. The man was so delighted that he exclaimed, “’Op in sir! To blazes with Churchill!”

Spring fever!!! Do you have it? The smell is in the air. Trees are budding. Birds are singing. Flowers are blooming. Spring is a miraculous experience in the great outdoors. Nature comes alive after a cold winter, in which it seemed that everything was dead. Little did we know that beneath the cold hard ground, the plants and trees were preparing for another growing season. Spring gives us hope for new growth in our own lives as well. Spring is a time to renew that excitement for life that lives inside all of us. During the Lenten and Easter seasons, we are reminded of the new life that Christ gave us through His death and resurrection! And through His Word and sacraments, we have the reassurance that Christ is that Life within us, and because of the Good News of salvation, we can walk with Jesus, enjoy our life, and serve Him with gladness.

The Communication Committee continues to serve the LWML Kansas District in many ways, so during this spring season, take the time to review the tools that the LWML offers to keep informed of district events and important news. Share these tools with fellow society members or prospective new members, as well as all the women in your church, especially young women.

P: Publications – the LWML has a great magazine, Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly, full of great articles, pictures, and Bible studies; share your copy with friends and make this publication available to all women in your church.

Bylaws Don’t Need to be Complicated

Robert’s Rules of Order indicates that bylaws define the primary characteristics of the organization and how it operates. Bylaws contain rules that are so important they can’t be changed without previous notice and the consent of a specified majority.

When revising and reviewing zone and society bylaws, it’s easy to get caught up in details, such as defining all of the responsibilities of each officer or each committee. Rather, strive to have bylaws that describe the basic structure and method for doing business (the rules by which your group functions). LWML (on the national level) has some basic requirements that societies and zones are to follow. Society bylaws must conform to national LWML articles on object, membership and parliamentary authority. Zone articles and sections on name, object, membership, representation at LWML conventions, and parliamentary authority are to be in conformity with national’s bylaws.

Specific details and rules related to the administration (as opposed to parliamentary procedure) can beincluded in Standing Rules or in a Procedures Manual, and do not need approval from the voting members. Reviewing bylaws every four to five years is an important step to determine that your group is operating efficiently and in conformity with district and national guidelilnes. It can be found by clicking on Gospel Outreach and going to the 2017-2018 Student Financial Aid Application box on the far right. The deadline to receive the application is JUNE 1, 2017.

Mission Project grants are funded from Mite Box and other designated offerings. The following projects were selected by the delegates at the 2016 LWML Kansas District Convention. The Mission Project funds are awarded through the biennium as donations allow. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. The Special Focus Ministries Committee would like to introduce the three Young Woman Representatives who will be attending the national LWML convention in Albuquerque this summer.

Paige EdgingtonMy name is Paige Edgington and I grew up in Wichita, Kansas. I attended Concordia University, Nebraska as a student in the Director of Christian Education program. From there, my husband of 6 years, Cooper, and I lived in Phoenix, Arizona and Santa Maria, California before landing back in our hometown of Wichita, Kansas. I now serve as the Director of Campus Outreach at the Lutheran Student Center near Wichita State University. I am a part of leading a major undertaking at the Lutheran Student Center to launch a coffee house outreach ministry called Fairmount Coffee Co., which will open in late Summer of this year. I also serve part time in my church, Risen Savior inWichita. I am looking forward to the national LWML Convention and hope to connect with other young women to gain insight of how to inspire our young sisters in the Church to be involved and take part in all LWML has to offer!

Jeanie TuttleMy name is Jeanie Tuttle. I am an Air Force brat. I’ve traveled all over the US (mostly with work) and outside of the country to Canada, France and Guatemala. In May I will be going back down to Guatemala with family and friends for my niece’s wedding (my sister-in-law is Guatemalan). I graduated from the University of Kansas (RCJHGoKU) and am currently pursuing my MBA there. Right now my hobbies feel neglected with all my attention going to school and work. I love attending Bible Study, Eve Circle (a young women’s LWML group with former YWRs Amanda Williams and Tiffany Harkins), hanging with family and friends, hiking, roller blading (yep, I still do that), biking, and generally getting outdoors, weather permitting. I am really looking forward to a weekend of praise, worship, service, and education with like-minded women.

Katelyn HiltMy name is Katelyn Hilt. I have made 27 trips around the sun, and I have called Kansas City home for most of my life. I just recently moved a whole 15 miles south into the Shawnee, KS area. I was born and raised at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in KC. I even attended preschool there and returned to help my preschool teacher and one of my heroes, Mrs. Donna, as a volunteer in my early 20’s. I’ve made beautiful friendships from my home church and continue to daily. I work full time at Family Tree Nursery as horticulturist and designer. My love for the outdoors and plants came from my upbringing and my lively parents. I am enrolled at Johnson County Community College and am in the process of finishing up my Gen Eds to continue into Social Work. I spend a lot of my free time staying active in the community and hanging with my family. I love everything outdoors, with camping, hiking, fishing, gardening, and playing Frisbee, making the top of the list. I love traveling; most of my early traveling years were spent exploring the U.S., New Zealand, and Mexico with family and church groups. I love seeing the world that God created. I love seeing it even more with the people I love. My parents, sisters, brother-in-law, nephew, and boyfriend have been some of my most favorite travel buddies. I look forward to being at the convention in New Mexico, meeting new friends, worshipping the God who teaches me how to love, and learning more about the goodness He created.

Jesus El Buen Pastor Lutheran Church received the Mission Project # 5 check for $3,000 for support for the food pantry to help feed the low-income Spanish- speaking community in Kansas City. It was delivered by Financial Secretary Ella Schempp to Pastor Frank Eberhart, Deacon Tom Eckard, Deb Hartje and Vicar Juan Buien. Harvesters and other area churches also support Jesus El Buen Pastor Lutheran Church with food and household goods. “Thank you for your support to help feed our community.”

Ladies, we have been so blessed! We have just paid Mission Project #5. I had the pleasure to deliver the check to Jesus El Buen Pastor Lutheran Church. The Lord is working through our mites! As of February 28, 2017, we have collected $57,279.89 for mites. What a joy to see where these monies are going and the sharing of God’s word!

I do not like spring cleaning as a rule—well, I really don’t like any kind of cleaning as a rule—but during this year’s spring cleaning, I found an email (I could not find the author of the piece) I would like to share with you because reading it again reminded me what a blessing all of you are to me, some of the “sisters” in my life.

A young wife sat on a sofa on a hot humid day, drinking iced tea and visiting with her mother. As they talked about life, about marriage, about the responsibilities of life and the obligations of adulthood, the mother clinked the ice cubes in her glass thoughtfully and turned a clear, sober glance upon her daughter. “Don’t forget your sisters,” she advised, swirling the tea leaves to the bottom of her glass. “They’ll be more important as you get older. No matter how much you love your husband, no matter how much you love the children you may have, you are still going to need sisters. Remember to go places with them now and then; do things with them. Remember that ‘sisters’ means ALL women . . your girlfriends, your daughters, and all your other women relatives too. You’ll need other women. Women always do.” “What a funny piece of advice”, the young woman thought. “Haven’t I just gotten married? Haven’t I just joined the couple-world? I’m now a married woman, for goodness sake! A grown-up! Surely my husband and the family we may start will be all I need to make my life worthwhile.” But she listened to her mother. She kept contact with her sisters and made more women friends each year. As the years tumbled by, one after another, she gradually came to understand that her mom really knew what she was talking about. As time and nature work their changes and their mysteries upon a woman, sisters are the mainstays of her life. After more than fifty years of living in this world, here is what I’ve learned: Time passes. Life happens. Distance separates. Children grow up. Jobs come and go. Love waxes and wanes. Men don’t do what they’re supposed to do. Hearts break. Parents die. Colleagues forget favors. Careers end. BUT. . . Sisters are there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between you. A girlfriend is never farther away than needing her can reach. When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you have to walk it by yourself, the women in your life will be on the valley’s rim, cheering you on, praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the valley’s end. Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk beside you. Or come in and carry you out.Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters, daughters-in-law, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, nieces, cousins, and extended family, all bless our life! When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we would need each other. Every day, we need each other still.

Just click on “Gifts from the Heart.” Items include new twin-sized sheet sets, quilts, new baby kits, school kits, health kits, children’s underwear, and some specific gift cards. Check the website for details.

Why not give all in your congregation an opportunity to contribute! If you or someone you know is driving to the convention, she may have room to take the donations. Jesus tells us that what we do for others in His name, we are doing for Him. See Matthew 25:40.

The Eve Circle in the KC metro area is willing to make the felt sunflower pins that we Kansans wear at the LWML convention. Purple cowbells will be available for sale at the Kansas Caucus at the national convention in Albuquerque in June, for $2.00 each. Deaf People and the Gospel

The heart language of the Deaf community in the United States is American Sign Language (ASL). ASL is the language of worship for Deaf people. The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod has had indigenous deaf churches that communicate the Gospel in ASL since 1894.

In 1994, it was estimated that approximately ninety percent of Deaf people in the United States did not attend church. This was, in part, due to the limited number of indigenous deaf churches. In 2009, the estimate has risen to ninety-eight percent.

In 1994, we had sixty-one indigenous deaf churches in the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, and a number of in-terpreted ministries. The number of full-time pastors serving indigenous deaf churches has decreased since 1994.

ZONE AND SOCIETY NEWS The Kansas City CrossRoads Zone Fall Event was held Saturday, October 8 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Olathe, KS with Pastor Joel Schultz leading our devotion based on Matthew 25: 31-45. Our program themed “Hospitality” was presented by guest speaker Dave Mereske of Hollis Renewal Center located in Bonner Springs, KS. Dave enlightened us with a power point filled with beautiful pictures and information about the Center and how it is used. Hollis is 153 acres of secluded wooded land located about 20 minutes west of downtown Kansas City with facilities for retreats, workshops, meeting and outdoor activities. He stressed that Hollis provides “a time and place apart” forindividuals, small groups and organizations to pause and reflect on their mission and embodies hospitality, providing a place for prayer, reflection and renewal.

Zone President Tiffany Harkins introduced Jeanie Tuttle, Emily Gibson, and Alaina Booth (who was not in attendance) as our Young Woman Representatives to the 2016 District Convention. Jeanie and Emily shared their experiences to the group and read a summary from Alaina. All enjoyed their time spent serving and being served by others at the convention.

Following our meeting all enjoyed being fed a lunch of hot turkey sandwiches prepared by Beautiful Savior LWML husbands and salads and desserts provided by each society along with fellowship time.

She was the Church Organist for over 65 years, as well as typing the bulletins every Sunday and all other worship services for MANY YEARS. Luella was a FAITHFUL member of Guild-LWML as well as a member of the Bible Study groups. We are so THANKFUL for her love of First Lutheran, and for her God-given talents she shared with us. Luella went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 17, 2016. Her First Lutheran Family misses her DEARLY.
