The precast concrete industry and its concrete solutions

The precast concrete industry is the collective noun given to all enterprises that manufacture

precast concrete products at specially equipped plants with a permanent location. The

products are delivered to the construction sector ready to be put in place at building and road

construction sites, civil engineering works etc.

The industry does not deliver concrete, but provides finished products with specific

    applications.

    Precast concrete products

Three main categories of products can be identified, following their intended use:

    A. Building products Bricks and blocks Floor and roofing elements Faade and wall elements Beams and columns Other structural elements Structural openings Other building products

    B. Civil engineering

    Street products

Paving units Slabs and flags Other paving elements Kerbs Other linear street elements Noise barriers Ancillaries

    1. Precast concrete is COMFORTABLE

The material has intrinsic properties ofthermal inertia

(allowing a more constant temperature both in cold and hot regions) and acoustic insulation.

    2. Precast concrete is SAFE

Everybody knows that concrete does not burn!

Not only is the structural stability maintained for longer periods, but

    concrete construction

prevents the spread of the fire from one building to another.

It is sufficiently strong to resist impacts, blasts and natural catastrophes like earthquakes,

    tornadoes and floods.

    3. Precast concrete is VERSATILE

Factory production allows a wide choice ofsurface finishing, colour

range and special shapes. Precast concrete has another advantage: its

mouldability which entails designers to copy classical details like

keystones and capitals or match the finish of materials like weathered

stones. The precast concrete industry can source a wide range of aggregates locally and offer

a tremendous variety of colours and visual effects.

    4. Precast concrete is HEALTHY

Indoor air quality is a concern for all of us.

Precast concrete is stable throughout its life and does not

need chemical treatment to protect it against rot and insect

attack: this means that there are no emissions in the

    internal environment.

    5. Precast concrete is OPTIMISED

Advanced technologies used in the precasting plants create

an improved quality product (i.e. reduced tolerances,

thinner sections, engineered solutions) compared with

cast-on-site concrete. Additionally this quality can be checked before a unit is inserted into

    the structure or site work!

    6. Precast concrete is DURABLE

    Concrete lasts for years.

Egyptian and Chinese people used an ancient form of

concrete for buildings and structures that still exist today.

Concrete is used where the structural stability has to be

maintained for long periods. Effective design detailing helps to lengthen the life of a concrete

building; precast manufacturers can offer guidance on designing for durability.

    7. Precast concrete is ECOLOGICAL

Made of natural raw materials (stones, gravels, sand,

cement), locally available almost everywhere and in an

enormous quantity, precast concrete minimises the

whole life cycle impact on the environmentwhencompared with other construction materials.

Precast concrete units can entirely be re-used or recycled (almost 100% of a concrete building

can be recycled, no matter how heavily reinforced).

when the foundations have not yet started. But the project requirements of a modern

construction prefer a just-in-time delivery! On-site construction using precast concrete is

not only faster, but also safer as secure working platforms are quickly established.

    9. Precast concrete is AFFORDABLE

Precast concrete combines the excellent quality of factory production

with a relatively inexpensive material. The costs to repair and maintain

a concrete structures are highly limited. There is therefore no need to

compromise on quality to reduce costs, simply choose the best way

    to use locally available resources.

    What is concrete?

Concrete is an essential material. With a worldwide estimated consumption of between 21

and 31 billion tonnes of concrete in 2006, concrete is the second most consumed substance on

Earth after water*! A world without concrete is almost inconceivable!

Concrete is a mixture of sand, gravel and/or other aggregates (the matrix), bound together by

a water-based binder, cement. Admixtures (modifying agents) and additives (fine mineral

powders) are sometimes introduced to improve the characteristics of the fresh concrete, of the

mixing process and/or of the final hardened material.

*World Business Council on Sustainable Development, Concrete Recycling - A contributionto Sustainability, 2008.

What is a precast concrete product?

A precast concrete product is a factory-made piece

manufactured with concrete and which, later, together with

other pieces, will become part of a larger structure. Precast

concrete elements are prepared, cast and hardened at

specially equipped plants with a permanent location.

Once a precast concrete product is produced and all the undertaken quality controls

satisfactory, the unit is stored until delivery. It is then transported for use at another site.

The main advantages of such a process are:

    the intrinsic quality of an industrial product, manufactured in a controlledenvironment and with accurate methods;

advanced quality control, which goes far beyond the checking of the fresh concrete, can be introduced. Dimensional accuracy, properties of the hardened concrete and

position of reinforcement can all be checked before inclusion of an element in the

    final work;

factory-made products are independent of weather conditions and can be proceededseparately from construction work on site.

    Traditional material, modern construction

Precast concrete is a reliable combination of a traditional material

    with constant innovation.

The advantages of a traditional material are the well-known

characteristics and behaviour (for example, fire resistance, thermal mass, acoustics

properties) that have been proved by years of in-use experience.

But this material undergoes constant improvement both in its composition and in theproduction process.

    By ESCOFET, Spain

Precast concrete has the prime advantage of being economical in the four main phases of a

    products life:

Production: raw materials are easily available and economical; Construction: reduced on-site construction time; Use: durable material; Disposal: concrete can be 100% recycled.

India has become the global pipe manufacturing hub especially of SAW pipes primarily due to its

lower cost, high quality and geographical advantages. Additionally, Indian companies have acquired

global accreditations and certifications which make them preferred suppliers to most of the worlds

top oil and gas companies in the Middle East, North America and Europe. CARE Research believes

that once the global economy returns to sustained growth, the domestic pipe industry is expected to

    accelerate into high growth trajectory.

As per CARE Research, Indian pipe manufacturers will be greatly benefited when Exploration &

Production (E&P) projects for oil and gas companies which were previously stalled or revoked

because of the global financial crisis recommence their operations. This new spurt in demand will be

    positive for future growth.

CARE Researchs report on Indian Pipe Industry gives valuable insight of the industry on global and

domestic capacities, demand-supply gap analysis of domestic market, export market for domesticcompanies, replacement demand, competition and commentary on top industry players. We have

reported demand break-up within each segment of steel pipes like SAW, ERW and Seamless pipes.

For SAW pipes, our demand forecasting is derived from several upcoming pipeline projects expected

in India and globally coupled with the replacement demand. For ERW pipes, which are primarily used

for City Gas Distribution network, we have calculated our demand based on several ongoing natural

gas pipeline projects in India. For Seamless pipes which are extensively used for E&P projects; our

demand is based on onshore and offshore metreage drilled. Additionally, we have detailed analysis

on PVC and HDPE pipes which have become preferred material in the construction industry and

several government projects. The cost analysis and pricing information presented in the report will

help the reader identify the critical cost items and their trends. The company overview section in the

report provides detailed profiles of the top seven players in the industry, including their financial and

operational data and product range. The report also provides manufacturing process and technical

aspects in the industry overview section.

The report provides CARE Researchs outlook and challenges on Indian pipe industry for the next 3-5

years along with a detailed demand break-up within each sub-segment of steel pipes. CARE Research

has developed a robust methodology for forecasting domestic demand. It takes into account several

initiatives taken by the Indian government to provide basic water supply and sanitation and also

emphasizes on oil and gas sector which serves as a backbone to the pipe industry as a whole.
