How are we different from a UPS

Q: Isn't a UPS a power conditioner? Doesn't it protect me?

A: An Uninterruptible Power Supply is just that: it is a power availability device. Nowhere in its name does it say it protects or conditions power because it doesn't. A UPS passes electrical power events such as surges right through itself to the loads it powers. A UPS is in itself a load with electronics that require protection just to operate satisfactorily. Most UPS systems use a circuit known as a transfer switch, which is in charge of determining when supply voltage is no longer available or with an expected range. This switch will engage the AC inverter to supply power to the load from the battery. Transients, surges, brownouts, in-rush current, and wave shape faults, which are all short-duration events, can cause the transfer switch to engage the batteries. This constant switching on and off of the batteries to produce power shortens the lifespan of the battery overall, and reduces the run-time available from the battery. Leveler technology in our products placed before a UPS in most cases eliminates the triggering of the transfer switch for power events that are short-lived, like transients and surges and wave shape faults. Furthermore, the downstream devices, such as your PC, are better protected than anything offered by a surge strip or other device.

Problems & Solutions Bi-Directional Hi-Frequency Filtering

Allows the DPPS systems to filter both the incoming power from the outlet and from the system back to the outlet.

Why is this important? It filters High Frequency generated by the system and High Frequency carried from the outside power source to the systems.

Allows the DPPS products to positively remove any signals generated by systems i.e. (Computers, Registers, Kiosks, and Point of Sale devices) from being introduced on the ground line of the building, which supplies the power.

Why is this important? Eliminates the ability to intercept data from electronic systems, which are protected by DPPS technology. Critical data is protected from interference.

Problems & Solutions Bi Directional Harmonic Filtering – Harmonics create heat, and heat is the cause of significant system failure. By filtering the harmonics generated by the incoming power source as well as the harmonics generated by each individual system you are reducing the overall heat signature of each system utilizing DPPS technology.

◦ By reducing the heat of each individual system you can reduce the ambient temperature in the operating environment by as much as 14%. This effectively reduces energy cost associated with cooling that environment.

◦ Additionally it will reduce the overall amount of distortion associated with harmonics.

The end result is a cooler environment, less energy required to keep mission critical infrastructure cool, and better clarity of the equipment, monitoring equipment and system monitors.

Problems & Solutions Power Conditioning and Power Factor Correction – This provides for a consistent pure level of power provided to your systems all the time, period!

◦ So how does this assist in system performance?

The platform or system(s), which utilizes the DPPS technology will operate consistently at its optimal level because it does not need to counter-act the effects of less than pure power. Additionally it can increase the effective range of radio platforms by increase the power quality that is introduced into that platform.

Problems & Solutions Spike, Transient and EMP protection – The DPPS technology prevents, the transmission of electrical spikes (including solar flares) and transients from both facility power and system introduced transients.

◦ Each time a transformer turns on, the cooling fan for a CPU, the cooling fan for the laptop, desktop or server, or a printer warms up, it creates a transient on the ground line. Those transients eat away at anything with a microprocessor, circuit board, RAM, and hard-drives.

◦ The DPPS technology removes all transients from your systems.

◦ Results – By eliminating transients you are effectively increasing the life cycle of any system that uses DPPS technology. You are reducing system down time in case of complete power loss. You are reducing maintenance and troubleshooting hours looking for repairing systems that do not recover.

Glossary of Electrical TermsEnergy – Energy consists of two elements: voltage and current.

Leveler’s electrical power solutions focus on both elements equally

Harmonics – A Harmonic is a whole-number multiple of the main (fundamental) frequency of electricity being delivered. For example, if 60Hz is the main frequency being delivered, then harmonics can exist at 120Hz, 180Hz, 240Hz, and son on. When energy potential of flow is sent out of phase, it remains on the distribution system as unusable energy that negatively affects the further delivery of usable energy. Equipment sensitive to current must deal with harmonics, usually releasing them either as heat or magnetism.

Phase – A phase is one cycle of electricity relative to another cycle. Phases are used to put more then one supply of 60Hz electricity on the same wire to improve the efficiency of electrical distribution.

Transient – It’s a fast-moving energy (measured in microseconds up to 1 millisecond) that results from sudden load changes or lightning. Typically, transients are disruptive, rather than destructive, because they tend to cause data corruption or interruption.

Surge – Similar to a transient but lasting much longer (measured in milliseconds). Surges carry catastrophic energy (voltage and current) that can destroy electronics.

Distortion – An unexpected change of a waveform or shape for the voltage and/ or current signals is distortion. Distortion is typically undesirable as it limits capacity or decreases performance

Power Factor – The ratio of True Power (Watts) to Apparent Power (Volt Amps). When the current and voltage are in sync, the Power Factor is 1.0. Power Factor has a potential range of 0 to 1, but is usually expressed in tenths (0.57, 0.70, etc). Most electronic devices have a Power Factor below 0.60.

Destructive Units – Volts x Amps x Seconds, used to accurately represent total energy in a surge event
