The Business of FirstLight Energy LimitedFirstLight Energy Limited focuses on the utilisation of renewable and sustainable energy technologies, to

provide clients in the public and private sector, with solutions that are designed to reduce both energy cost and consumption and to support the client in the achievement of their environmental

responsibilities.

FLE design, install and maintain systems encompassing the following technologies:-

Solar ThermalThermal Energy StoresUrban Wind TurbinesVoltage Regulators

Air De-stratification SystemsHybrid Lighting

FLE is also committed to a number of R&D projects to advance technologies to provide leading edge solutions to clients needs, whilst at the same time developing a strong IP base.

These include:-

Advanced heat stores using phase change materialsLight transmission - hybrid technology for the bio fuels industry

Wind turbines design to counter wind turbulence

The company is currently negotiating a distribution deal for inter - seasonal heat storage technology and an advanced air to air heat pump.

Phase Change Materials

SunStream Energy Stores

UtilizingPhase

Page 6: The Power Behind Renewables - Trefor Evans (First Light Energy)

By creatingan effective method of

utilising the phase change of materials it is possible to store

largerquantities of energy

thanusing water.

Typically up to 4 times for

equivalent volume of water

when used in conjunction

with the insulated jacket

Why SunStream Energy Stores

Page 7: The Power Behind Renewables - Trefor Evans (First Light Energy)

Benefits 1Acting as a storage buffer

Reducing the number of times a boiler starts and stops we can improve its

efficiency.

Running the boiler longer helps reduce carbon deposits as the flue temperature

reaches its peak efficiency.

Up to 25% energy reduction

Page 8: The Power Behind Renewables - Trefor Evans (First Light Energy)

Boiler on/off cycles no power tanks

Typically 30- 40,000 cycles /season

Boiler on/off cycles with power tanks

Typically 4 - 5000 cycles per season

Impact on boilers

Benefit 2Impact on Solar Thermal

Greater energy storage will enable better usage of available thermal energy and provides for the option

of increasing the size of the solar array to provide more free energy and to compensate

for the lower winter sun

We can achieve an increase in energy storage of 25%

The future:-

We are working with :

•Ciba Chemicals•Nottingham University•South East England Development Agency•PERA

In the development of new types of PCM thermal storage.

Page 14: The Power Behind Renewables - Trefor Evans (First Light Energy)

The Future is here now

In January 2009 we will be launching a new concept in PCM storage allowing us :

•Faster heat transfer rates•Lower installation costs

•Modular units•Direct replacement of hot water cylinder

•Low temperature PCM for cooling systems

All at a lower price!!

Hybrid Lighting

Page 16: The Power Behind Renewables - Trefor Evans (First Light Energy)

To capture sunlight and distribute it, using optical fibres, into the interior of a

building to provide premium quality, controllable lighting capable of reducing energy

consumption.

Hybrid LightingSystem Objective

Page 17: The Power Behind Renewables - Trefor Evans (First Light Energy)

Hybrid Lighting

The Solar Collector

The solar collector consists of a two-axis tracking mechanism that supports a 1.2 metre diameter plastic primary mirror, a smaller secondary mirror, and a fibre optic receiver unit.

The collector tracks the sun using a microprocessor-based controller that accurately calculates the position of the sun given the local GPS co-ordinates and the local time.

Page 18: The Power Behind Renewables - Trefor Evans (First Light Energy)

BenefitsBrings natural sun light into buildings

Improves productivityReduces downtime

Reduces the effect of SADReduces building costs in achieving light regulations

Reduces energy consumption

Hybrid LightingThe Hybrid Luminaires

A "hybrid" luminaire is a lighting fixture that contains both electric illuminants (such as fluorescent lamps or incandescent bulbs) as well as fibre optic illuminants. Often the fibre optic illuminant is a dispersing element that converts the highly directional fibre optic light into a more desirable distribution. Hybrid luminaires are available for both directional lighting and area lighting. A daylight harvesting sensor is used to maintain a constant amount of combined illumination resulting from the hybrid luminaire. When sky conditions result in a reduction in available sunlight, the hybrid luminaire can instantly respond by increasing the amount of corresponding electric light.

Algae FarmingOpen Ponds or Bio-Reactors

Requirements for Efficient Growth

CO2 / Nutrients / Light

Benefits of AlgaeUses 6% more CO2 in growth phase than in burning

Produces solid or liquid fuel Can be used as food

Can be used as nutrientsDoes not require land for food production

Can use sea water or dirty waterCan be produced at point of use

Theoretically can produce more output than any other bio-crop
