Prior to Macondo & Montara
Shipping was implicitly acknowledged to be our
primary concern in respect of oil spills
From the Amoco Cadiz through Valdez to Erica
and Prestige industry had been on a journey to
reduce the volume and frequency of oil spills
from shipping
And it has been successful....

PREVENTION IS
THE PRIORITY
AND SAFETY IS
PARAMOUNT
Response capability is
fundamental to obtaining
a licence to operate
Ineffective response is
not an option
Public expectations are
high and growing
Regulators are increasing

Surveillance, Modelling
and Visualisation Knowing where spilled oil is, and
understanding what condition it is in
following a spill, is critically important
The GIRG analysis recognized not only
the emergence of new technologies, but
also the fragmentation between groups
who facilitate the technology and the
responders who ultimately use it
SMV is being addressed through seven
work packages
WP1 - In-Water Surveillance (Metocean)
WP2 - Surface Surveillance (Geomatics)
WP3 - Modelling & Prediction (Metocean)
WP4 - Metocean Databases (Metocean)
WP5 - GIS / Common Operating Picture –
COP (Geomatics)
WP6 - Regulatory Issues (Environmental)
WP7 - Report Deliverable (CG)
