Your Feedback, Views and Opinions

Emma’s DeskA note from

I have to say, the Waiuku Business and Development Association have outdone themselves again. What a spectacular event Blast to the Past was. The number of peo-ple and stall holders that filled the streets was huge, and even more lined the Tamakae Re-serve to watch the fireworks display.

These type of communi-ty events are hugely benefi-cial for our smaller towns. Not only do they allow us to show-case what we have to offer, but they also make for a great fam-ily day out.

With fireworks going on sale this week, I am also a firm be-liever that they should be kept to these type of public displays only.

Growing up, we were only allowed to let fireworks off in the back paddock of the farm, and we had to make sure our neighbours knew to enable them to move stock if neces-sary.

Now that I live in town, I cer-tainly don’t mind when they are let off over Guy Fawkes weekend, however, there are always several residents that seem to ruin it for others.

Last year, it seemed that eve-ry night of November, there

was someone letting them off at a ridiculous hour. Letting them off from 12 midnight onwards, and on a weekday, is just plain rude. Shortly after the sale of fireworks finished, we had a group of unfavour-ables go around the Tuakau Township and let off fireworks to mask the sound of glass breaking as they smashed in-to cars.

Public displays also allow people, and animals, who don’t enjoy fireworks so much, to prepare themselves for these events. Having owned pets all my life, including hors-es, and I feel incredibly lucky to have such relaxed animals that don’t give a fuss about the noise. It must be a real prob-lem for owners who have pets that are anxious, especial-ly when they have to tolerate the noise well past the fire-works weekend.

Fireworks in a controlled environment and profession-ally handled are a lot of fun and I do see public displays, like Blast to the Past, becom-ing a more popular way to en-joy this festivity in the future.

Emma

I was wondering when the law against using mobile phones whilst driving was rescinded? This must surely be the case as the only expla-nation for what I saw on Tuesday morning. I was walking my dog to-wards Waiuku, on the Waiuku-Otaua Road (after Cemetery Road) at about 9:30am and was passed by a tractor, followed by a police car, fol-lowed by a ute. The driver of the ute was holding a phone with his right hand against his left ear, talking. Now I can’t see how the driver of the police car would not have noticed that and pulled over the ute driv-er, but that didn’t happen. So I must assume that the law no longer ap-plies, is that right? When the benediction is pronounced, all should still be quiet, as if fearful of losing the peace of Christ. Let all pass out without jostling or loud talking, feeling that they are in the presence of God, that His eye is resting upon them, and that they must act as in His visible presence.

Let there be no stopping in the aisles to visit or gossip, thus blocking them up so that others cannot pass out. The precincts of the church should be invested with a sacred reverence. It should not be made a place to meet old friends and visit and introduce common thoughts and worldly business transactions. These should be left outside the church. God and angels have been dishonoured by the careless, noisy laughing and shuffling of feet heard in some places. {CCh 251}

Concerns over Grease performance review

Regarding your review on ‘Grease’ at Harrington Theatre, I find it ap-palling that the director’s name was not mentioned in the article. As a writer who has been working in community theatre’s for the past twenty years I am shocked that an article reviewing any production would omit the name of the director, and worse still, attribute the suc-cess of the production to that of the production manager. The role of a production manager is vital, but takes place mainly back-stage – fixing the budget for the production and ensuring that the set construction crew and other backstage crew all know what they are supposed to be doing. The cast, who in your article were referred to as ‘her cast’ (the production manager’s) are chosen by the director whom they work with for several months in preparation for the show. Though the article painted a positive picture of the production and its success-ful run, this is due to the hard work put in by the director and should be credited as such. Taryn Dryfhout

Editorial team response: Thank you for bringing the above to our attention, it was never our intention to undermine any members of the production. We will keep your feedback in mind for future reviews.

Not only was Sarah awarded Esme Tomble-son Award for the Person with Multiple Sclerosis of the Year at the beginning of October, she also took out Brightstar Emerging Speaker of the Year award from the National Speak-ers Association of New Zealand three weeks later.

The Emerging Speak-er Award was presented to Sarah on her birthday, at the annual Gala Din-ner which was held at the Auckland Yacht Club.

“I was completely blown away, as I was up against top competition. It certainly was a great way to celebrate my birthday.”

The Brightstar Emerg-ing Speaker of the Year award isn’t given to just anyone. It is judged in Australia, and if the judges feel that the nominees are not of the right calibre, it isn’t awarded.

Sarah believes both awards have helped authenti-cate her goals and ambitions.

“It feels like I am on the right track. When I was first diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, I didn’t want people to know. We then moved to the country for a better life,

which I believe has been instrumental for healing.”

Due to fatigue and the other problematic symp-toms, it didn’t seem like re-turning to the workplace would be possible. Sarah began a garden, with the aim of providing her fam-ily with fresh food.

As a result, Sarah now has a successful writing career and has authored two books about garden-ing. One documents the journey from city slick-er to country bumpkin, while the other encour-ages people to create gardens of their own and grow fresh food together. Sarah also regularly writes articles for the NZ Her-ald, Bite and Plus supple-ments once a season, has a monthly column on the

Go Gardening website and also contributes to their paper magazine. Sarah also speaks to various groups about the benefits of growing food, which has seen her take to the TV screen.

“I always wanted to be accepted for being an ac-complished gardener, who has MS, not the other way round. After a very busy year, both awards have been incredibly rewarding.”

FROM starting off as making decommissioned road sign clocks for their NCEA school requirements, the Waiuku College Year 13 Business Studies company, RAD Roadsigns, has grown rapidly, with the young entrepreneurs taking out South Auckland Regional Company of the Year.

llThe students were part of 3000 students from 136 schools around New Zealand participating in the annual Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme. They were selected from over 630 companies that were formed by each participating school.

The Regional awards, which were held at Villa Maria on Thursday, October 22, saw the students not only take out Regional Company of the Year, but won Social En-terprise award and have been honoured with a National Excellence Award, which will be presented to them in Wellington at the National Competition awards in early December.

“It has been a phenomenal achievement for us, as we never expected our business to come this far, let alone be named Regional Company of the Year,” says CEO, Sam Yelchich.

The Waiuku College students came up with the idea to use decommissioned road signs as clocks to provide a new and unique look for living decor, as the signs being used cannot be recycled due to their reflective surfaces.

From developing the idea, the team then had to fur-ther make, market and sell their signs. From Facebook to market days, and using local shop walls for advertis-ing space, the team used every avenue possible to pro-mote RAD Roadsigns. The hard work has since paid off, and the students have created a successful and unique

“We are so lucky to have had our community, fam-ily and friends support us through the whole process. Without them, and the support from the Lion’s Young Enterprise Scheme, it wouldn’t have been possible, let alone achievable to get anywhere near this far,” ex-plained Brooke.

“We are a little bit nervous but incredibly excited to see what our National Excellence Award is for.”

The fourth of the local quartet is made up by Super Black Racing’s Andre Heimgartner. The youngest driver in the field at just 20, both he and his team are in their first full time campaign and are not expected to win any of their three races. However he has cut plenty of laps at the circuit, having competed in the almost identical NZ Supertourer class in recent years. He could be capable of springing a surprise result.

Of the 21 Australian drivers that make up the balance of the entries, Mark Win-terbottom heads the list. The Pepsi Max Ford driver has a commanding champi-onship lead and has the pace runs on the board to justify favouritism. And while ‘Frosty’ is searching for the final nails to drive into the coffin, the man standing in his way is Craig Lowndes. A popular and gregarious figure, the Red Bull rac-

er has outshone his more fancied team mate Jamie Whincup so far this season. Oddly, despite a record 101 career race wins, he is yet to break his 14 year hoo-doo with the Pukekohe track. But with recent wins under his belt, including a famous effort at Bathurst, this could well be the year the duck is broken.

Others of interest to watch out for are the resurgent Holden Racing Team duo of Garth Tander and James Courtney, plus Cameron Waters, who makes his solo debut this weekend subbing into the second Pepsi Max car for the injured Chaz Mostert.

So will we see just the second Kiwi driver after Greg Murphy to win the Pukekohe leg of the Championship? It is very possible. It is time to get your back-side to the trackside and cheer them on to that chequered flag.

James Moffat, Driver for Nissan Motorsport

What are the first words you think of when I say ‘New Zealand’?“Choice hey bro”

You have raced here both domestical-ly and at V8 supercar level, have you got a favourite part of the Pukekohe circuit? I really enjoy the whole circuit, but my favourite part would be the final turn. It is a fast and bumpy fifth gear corner that rewards commitment.

Your father Allan Moffat is a legend of the sport, is there one particular piece of advice he has passed on to you?He would say that preparation is the key to success on and off the track.

Which other sports did you play as a child. And were you any good at them? I played the typical Aussie sports —Cricket in summer and AFL in the winter. I was handy at cricket and made the first XI team at school. I still enjoy playing golf.

Your fiancé Leah is a qualified nurse. Have you ever had to call upon her services?Having a nurse as a partner certainly has its benefits at times, especially at a race meeting. Thankfully I haven’t had to call on her too many times but she does take good care of me.

Who would you say is the biggest pest in the series?Well that really depends if you are talk-ing on the track or off (laughs).

Does your team mate and boss Rick Kelly have long hairy monkey arms?Yes. They are certainly long and he does have a bit of foliage on them too!

Have you got any guilty pleasures on your iPod that you would like to share with us?Can’t say I’ve got anything embar-rassing. Nothing but quality music on there (winks).

If I said you could become any age for the whole of next week, which age would you choose to be?That is probably the weirdest question that I have ever been asked! I think I need more time to think about that one.

Finally, if you could invite any three celebrities (dead or alive) for a BBQ at your place, who would they be?Who has a BBQ for only three people!

Lawson wins first championship racePukekohe teenager, Liam Lawson, won his first championship race at Taupo over the weekend.

In just his second-ever New Zealand championship car race meeting, Liam won the third and final race to follow up a third-place finish earlier in the day.

Liam, who is 13 years old, won the an-nual SpeedSport Scholarship young driver program earlier this year and apart from being the leading rookie driver, is now ly-ing fourth overall in the Hi-Q New Zealand Formula First championship.

“Liam’s first race win was no fluke.” said scholarship co-founder and driving coach, Dennis Martin. “That was a very mature drive. He simply out-drove his opposition.”

It was the first time Liam had raced at the Taupo circuit and his results have giv-en him an extra confidence boost leading into the next round at his home track at Pukekohe in December.

In his debut motor racing season, the former top karter is racing a Formula First car under the banner of the SpeedSport Scholarship Charitable Trust, currently

operating without a sponsor, as he continues to seek contributions via ‘Give A Little’ to help fund his season.

So let us explore together this very interesting concept of “Christian Perfection.” We get told so often by “well meaning people” that Perfection is for “Eternity” so in the meantime, we just fall short. Well this sort of got me going so I entered “Perfect” into my computer Bible search engine and here is what I found. Apart from a great list of verses, some here listed, I discovered that “In Christ” as St Paul always alluded to, is my only safety, and my Perfection before Father God, so here we go.

Matthew 5:48 “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Philippians 3:15 “Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in anything ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.” James 1:4 “But let patience have [her] perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” Genesis 6:9 “These [are] the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man [and] perfect in his generations, [and] Noah walked with God.”

Genesis 17:1 “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I [am] the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.” Deuteronomy 18:13 “Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.” 2 Samuel 22:33 “God [is] my strength [and] power: And he maketh my way perfect.” 1 Kings 8:61 “Let your heart therefore be perfect with the LORD our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.” 2 Kings 20:3 “I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done [that which is] good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.” 2 Chronicles 15:17 “But the high places were not taken away out of Israel: nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect all his days.” 2 Chronicles 16:9 “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of [them] whose heart [is] perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.” Job 1:1

“There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name [was] Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.” Job 8:20 “Behold, God will not cast away a perfect [man], neither will he help the evil doers:” Psalm 37:37 “Mark the perfect [man], and behold the upright: for the end of [that] man [is] peace.” Proverbs 2:21 “For the upright shall dwell in the land,

and the perfect shall remain in it.” Proverbs 11:5 “The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.” Luke 6:40 “The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.” Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:6 “Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:” 2 Corinthians 13:11 “Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.” Ephesians 4:13 “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:” Colossians 1:28 “Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:” 2 Timothy 3:17 “That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” Hebrews 13:21 “Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom [be] glory for ever and ever. Amen.” James 1:4 “But let patience have [her] perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” James 3:2 “For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same [is] a perfect man, [and] able also to bridle the whole body.”

That sure is an amazing long list of Bible Characters who all were recorded in Scripture as “Perfect” and some even had the title of being this way all their life, but even King David has an amazing track record of perfection and 1 Kings 15:5 records his only failure, but Scripture also records his confession, repentance and forgiveness. From what is listed above, it is very clear to me that as long as we are “In Christ” and have genuine repentance for all past sins, and then put away all these evil deeds and activities that we therefore now walk in the light as he is in the light in the “Love of God.”

One point that stuck with me is the number of times that Father God was speaking to a Human and advised them to walk perfectly before his God. We often hear of walking; “With God,” “Beside God,” “Hand in Hand with God,” but rarely this concept of “Before God.” It is like God tells us that he has given us the “Instruction Manual,” (Bible) so we pick it up, follow its instructions, and forge our path forwards, in a sort of “Military Advance,” with Father God behind us calling out any special instructions on our advance.

Perfection found in Nature, is a growth/growing process; a baby lamb will not remain that way for the next ten years, as much as a bean shoot will look that same way in two years. Continual growth is what makes perfection in Nature; a growing and blossoming sprouting and fruiting, new leaves, new branches, new growth thus we have perfection. 2 Peter 3:18 “But grow in grace, and [in] the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and for ever.” Dear Reader; let us each resolve to be now and ever to remain, “Perfect – in Christ.”

Be Ye Perfect

We find strength and truth in His Word, His Word Alone...

The Pollok Arts and Crafts Co-operative held their annual Labour Weekend art competition and exhibition opening evening on Friday, 23rd October, at their gallery on the Awhitu Peninsula.

The weather behaved for once, and the balmy evening allowed patrons the luxury of wandering inside or outside the gallery. The theme for this year was,‘The Seven Deadly Sins’, and true to tradition, there was no shortage of creativity on display.

Guest judge for the competition was Sue Suther-land, Fine Arts graduate, and senior lecturer at Auckland University. She was amazed by the di-versity and originality of the works entered, and was especially drawn to the number of entries which invited some sort of engagement from the viewer. Promotion of local art has always been a central tenet of the Co-op’s philosophy, so it was great to hear this affirmative testimony. As usual there was a huge mixture of media presented, so judging was always going to be a difficult task. Sue awarded quite a number of Highly Commended certificates firstly. These went to:

Anna Whyte (photographic art ; ‘Mankind’s Ul-timate Sin’, and ‘Temptation’), Phil Jordan (mixed media; ‘Sins by Suggestion’), Doug Fisher (photo-graphic art; ‘Jezebel’), Tracey Majurey (mixed me-dia; ‘An Interview with God…please leave those things at the gate’), Marietta Pasley (ink drawing; ‘Seven Deadly Sins’), Lois Templeton (mixed me-dia; ‘The Tree of Vices’), and Kerry Collins (fabric art; ‘Seven Bowls of Sin’).

Seven Deadly Sins find artistic home on the Peninsula

First prize of $500.00 went to Deborah Illingworth for her painting, ‘The Collectors’; a work which referenced a local historical issue, and her take on the ‘sin’ which col-oured some of the dealings associated with it.

Visitors and art lovers are invited to come and see the display for themselves. The exhibition will run for three weeks, and there will be a ‘Viewer’s Choice’ prize awarded at the end.

Another Centurion Locomotive at GVRA venerable lady turned 100 at the Glenbrook vintage Railway last weekend.

Written by David Black

ll The locomotive, Ww644, was built at Hillside rail-way workshops in Dunedin and entered service in October 1915. The designer was Chief Draughtsman Reginald Pye-Smith to the specifications of chief me-chanical engineer A.L. Beattie. Pye Smith’s success with design eventually resulted in a total of 50 Ww class en-gines being produced until 1919.

Neil Carey - Founding member of GVR cutting the cake

They were predominantly used in the North Island, on suburban trains in Auckland and Wellington as well as branch lines and became famous for their versatil-ity and performance under load. Pye-Smith’s triumph as the engines rolled out of Hillside must have been tinged with sadness at the loss of his son Harold who was killed at Gallipoli on August 27th 1915, only weeks before Ww644 entered service.

Two Ww engines hauled the long train which opened the Waiuku Branch in May 1922. GVR also owns sister engine Ww480. Both have boilers over 60 years old, well over their design life and now causing a need for frequent repairs. GVR is in the process of build-ing modern replacement boilers for both engines and has also had a replacement cylinder casting made for 644 which will also be fitted during a major overhaul scheduled in the near future.

Both of the Wws have an assured future on GVR, they remain as nimble, versatile and powerful as Pye-Smith intended them to be. In this centennial year of both the engine and Gallipoli, we honour the memory of the great engineer, his draughtsman and his fallen son. They have given us the perfect engines for the Glen-brook Vintage Railway which could still be running in another 100 years.

letter to the editor regarding ww644:

In 1968 when my father was Assistant Railway Sta-tion master in Picton he told me to come down to the station to see an old steam locomotive that was arriv-ing under its own power. It had steamed all the way from Westport to Picton via Chruchchurch. Dad got me onto the foot plate as it ran to the old ash pit in the railway yard where it stopped so the engine could cool overnight to be shunted onto the Cook Strait ferry the next day to Wellington. From there it was to steam to Auckland to be resorted by a group of enthusiasts. Many years later I moved to Waiuku to begin my teach-ing career and on my first visit to Glenbrook Vintage Railway what did I see in storage? . . . You guessed it.

W H AT started 30 years ago as a rowing camping trip for New Lynn Sea Scouts, increased over Labour weekend to their largest fleet to make the trip down the Waikato River.

On Wednesday October 28, Italia, a Canteen worker, came to Waiuku College to accept a cheque for $11,000, which was raised by the students.

ll Shane Burns, a Year 13 Prefect, spoke to both the senior and junior school about his contribution to-wards the $11,000. He alone raised $2500 through quiz nights, and do-nations for shaving his hair on the day of the Canteen Carnival. This however wasn’t his only contribu-tion to the money made, as he was nominated for the ASB Good as Gold award run through Newstalk ZB by a family friend.

They were so impressed by the fun-draising effort he had made, that they decided to match the $2500 he raised himself, thus increasing his total con-tribution to $5000.

Amber-Lee Lawrie, a current Year 12 student at Waiuku College, and a Canteen member herself, then spoke to the students about the difference

their money would make to teens liv-ing with cancer.

She spoke of the difference Can-teen has made in her life, from ar-ranging to have pizza once a week (which was a welcome change from hospital food), providing activities and crafts to do during the long days spent in hospital, to hosting nation-al and regional camps for all types of Canteen members.

Amber-Lee was very excited to have Italia present at the assembly, as she has been Amber’s Canteen support member since she was di-agnosed in 2011.

The Carnival organisers would like to say a big thanks to everyone who supported the event in any way, from individual donations, to those who shaved their hair, or brought an item from the stalls run by Year 11 Business Studies students who donated 40 per-cent of their profits for Canteen.

They would also like to thank those who attended and supported Fight for Life, as some of their profits also

Also, a huge thank you to Leonie Cook is in order. She, along with Tracey Kingi, was instrumental in the organisation of both the Canteen Carnival, and the Fight for Life .

The fleet, comprising of twenty seven 5.2 meter standard cutters, 30 kayaks, two paddleboards, and eight powered safety craft safely carried their crews all the way from Taupiri to Tuakau.

Three hundred Sea Scouts and two crews of Scouts completed the three day voyage, which saw two overnight stops, where they camped in tents. The planning of the event and the associated documentation for both the Waikato Regional Council and Scouts New Zealand had to be undertaken weeks in advance to ensure the safety of all partici-

pants and compliance with bylaws and risk management policies. The assistance received from Toby Kemp, the Waikato Regional

Council’s Harbourmaster for the area of the river in which the event was held, was appreciated by the organisers.

Apart from the camaraderie and teamwork that this kind of activ-ity develops, it also develops new skills in navigating the ever chang-ing river depth and hazards, which includes the many floating logs both large and small.

Jason has been a part of the team at Southern Po-diatry for the last nine months, after spending three years at AUT, studying podiatry.

His passion for the industry began after he suf-fered injuries from running and needed to see a po-diatrist himself.

Jason hopes to specialise in sports podiatry in the future, and thoroughly enjoys surgeries which more than often include ingrown toenails.

Growing better business in HunuaHorticulture New Zealand’s leadership programme —part of which was held in Wellington recently is set to benefit Hunua-grown produce and businesses

Local MP, Andrew Bayly, says vegetable growth is a strong and long-standing fea-ture of the local economy.

“Fresh vegetable growth has been part of the landscape for years.

“The future for employers and employees growing qual-ity local produce is bright.

“It’s courses like Horticul-ture New Zealand’s leader-ship programme that are only going to build momentum for Hunua businesses,” Mr Bayly says.

Merry Christmas — Why it’s not too soonI know, I know, it’s barely been Halloween yet Christmas stuff is appearing everywhere. Look out we’ll see the Easter eggs next!

It comes quicker and quicker each year and you wonder ‘is it to the point the stuff might as well be out all year round?’

Love it or hate it, you can’t deny it, this marketing is still bringing in the sales. It is making customers and potential customers think that Christmas and the bills are coming. It also has the advantage of helping cus-tomers spread the spending; had you ever thought of that?

If you can get them to spend with you now, you might be able to give them an offer that keeps them spending with you, not your competitors all season. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Do you want to know how?Well retailers, how about a promotion and voucher

that says spend $50 now and get a $5 voucher to spend on your next purchase next month? Brand them, date them and give this offer out each month during Octo-ber, November and December. It gets them spending in November, December and January and includes the original purchase in October.

Service providers - there is no reason why you can-not offer the same.

Get creative everyone, spend $xx now and get $xx off a specific product or service in the following month.

You market your offer - “Have you seen this month’s special?” “Shop now limited offer” ten days to go, five days to go, three days to go. Create limited time offers to entice and create demand. Help your customers see that they only have a short time to act or they may miss out on this fantastic deal.

“Shop now and help spread the Christmas bills.” Now you are really helping your cus-tomer, this isn’t a sales ploy, you are really thinking about your customers budget –which is the perception you should be try-ing to create for them.

If you are trying to create a market-ing database then promote the offer around the sign up requirement to your database.

If you are trying to get people to purchase from a website, then offer them the discount off their next spend, next month, direct from your website.

In other words, shop now for Christmas because we are too soon off to the beach and out of shop-ping mode. Ask your cus-tomers to do something, so they know what the promotion and offer is. (Remember CALL TO ACTION). Use the promotion and of-fer to drive cus-tomers to alter-nate sales por-tals for you or alternate prod-ucts.

B e c a u s e N O W i s t h e time to start cre-ating sales to en-sure you make the most of the spending season.

New Zealanders are a diverse group of people who trace their origins from a wide range of countries and cultures.

Fred Graham

In migrating to Aotearoa, they hoped to find the silver, which lines the long white cloud. For me this dream is expressed by the silver fern.

The whole fern leaf is made up of a series of smaller leaves, each representing an ethnic group who have come to this place of birds, formed a new nation and called themselves kiwis.

Symbols: STARS; Stars appear on many flags, and in each case, they signify a special meaning. The stars of the Southern Cross on a flag usually indicate that country’s position on the globe. For example: the Southern Hemisphere.

BIRDS, ANIMALS & PLANTS: These

items do not appear on many flags, with the exception being Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Lebanon and Canada. Note, they do appear in some kind of heraldic form in others.

NZ SYMBOLS: Looking at the flag designs already submitted, the favourite symbols seem to be:

The Koru – in all of its various forms the Southern Cross, and the Silver Fern. I could be wrong, but I feel that the general public regard the Koru purely as a Maori symbol and an Air New Zealand symbol. The Southern Cross is also an iconic symbol of other nations in the Pacific, or on the Pacific Rim. Stars are very much part of Maori Mythology.

The Silver Fern, even though it began life as a symbol for rugby, is popularly regarded as the New Zealand symbol.

So the New Zealand Flag should be made up of —1: dark blue background to represent the Pacific Ocean. 2: the Silver Fern to represent the people. 3: Stars, not the Southern Cross, but just three, as mentioned in our National Anthem – ‘Guard Pacifics’ Triple Star’.

Michaelene Nu’u was officially welcomed as the new Principal of Aka Aka School last Friday, with students and teachers performing a hair raising powhiri for her and her family.

Emma Sharplin llAfter 15 years of teaching at Rongomai School, Otara, Whaea Michaelene decided she would like a change of scenery and thought teaching in a rural school would be a great shift.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Rongomai School. I started there as a beginning teacher and learnt so much through my different roles. As an Associate Principal, I oversaw the curricu-lum programmes and implemented the Reg-gio Emilia Philosophy, where teaching is lead by the students’ interests.”

Whaea Michaelene ex-

plained that the hands-on concept worked in-credibly well and that she is looking forward to introducing the philoso-phy into Aka Aka School in the near future.

“The environment will be a keen aspect focus for the way we teach, as we are incredibly lucky to have so many interest-ing places surrounding the school.”

After seeing a reliev-ing Principal position become available at the school, Whaea Micha-lene thought it would be a great opportunity to see if a permanent role was for her. “I just loved it, and was thrilled when offered the role.” Whaea Michae-lene says the communi-ty has been incredibly supportive and that staff have worked equally hard to ease her into the role.

“I am really excited to start the New Year. We have had a few physical changes in the school by de-cluttering classrooms and giving the Pukeko

Powhiri for new Principal

Charlotte Cooper, Sandy Muir, Whaea Michaelene, Cameron and Jayden Grey enjoy the aspects of their County School, which includes hut building.

Playgroup a decent over-haul. We will also look at ways to help build our roll and how we can move forward as a team. We will also be investigating our IT capabilities in the near future.” For now, Whaea

Michaelene is looking forward to meeting and getting to know the com-munity more and en-joying the activities that take place at rural school, which includes building huts and tree climbing.

The great flag debate

‘The best fireworks show Waiuku has ever seen’ has been one of the resound-ing comments on the Blast to the Past event, held last Sunday evening.

Thousands lined the streets to enjoy the fan-tastic entertainment and great variety of market stalls before watching the colourful display on the Tamakae Reserve by York Distributors (Bad Boy Fireworks).

This year, the Waiuku Business & Development Association were very lucky to also have the ser-vices of Duncan Fleming who is a level three pyro-technic accredited.

“He was kind enough to oversee the firework setup and check all safety

procedures to ensure the display was as safe as pos-sible for the public,” says Town Manager, Sharlene Druyven. The attendance was believed to be well up on last year, and Shar-lene commented that the number of non-residents attracted to this year’s show was a real bonus. She hopes they will see what a special commu-nity Waiuku is. “We are happy to report that the Waiuku Scouts, through their bucket shaking, managed to raise $1059.30 for the Waiuku Mudlarks. This will go towards the replacement and main-tenance of their tools. A huge thank you is needed to those who contributed to this very worthy cause.”

The best Blast to the Past ever

The WB&DA would like to say a huge thank you to The Franklin Local Board, Raewyn & Neil McCormick from Waiuku New World and Blue Sky

Community Trust for sponsoring the Waiuku Blast to the Past. We would also like to thank the Waiuku Lions, Waiuku Scouts, Waiuku

Maori Wardens and the other volunteers who all worked tirelessly to make this event such a success.

Thank you to the Waiuku community and businesses for their support for this event, we have been overwhelmed at the huge amount of positive

feedback received.

Thank you

The Mudlarks, a group of voluntary fellows, who have put in untold hours getting rid of all the mangroves on the western side of the Waiuku Estuary, have suffered once again at the hands of thieves. Sometime over the Labour Weekend, their dingy was taken. Ian Scobie, Chair-man of the Mudlarks group, commented that the theft was done us-ing a knife to cut the moorings. “All that was left of the craft was a short piece of rope,” he said. This boat was the personal property of one of the Mudlarks, and he had made it available for this project. “All we want is our boat back, and we will be so grateful for help for its recovery.” This boat has the distinctive numbering of PH 18040 made by drillings in the foredeck, and is easily recognisable. The Police have been notified and for those who have any further information on the whereabouts of the dinghy, please contact Ian Scobie by email [email protected] or phone 09 235 2246 or 027 616 4407.

Join in and be part of the 2015Mudlarks Community Seedling Pulling Day

Saturday 7th November. Meet at 9.30am at Hartmann House, Tamakae Reserve.

The Mudlarks need your help!

• Wear old clothes • Strong closed footwear • Leather or sturdy gardening gloves

Scenes from last years seed pulling day which was a huge success.

Last Thursday the Waiuku Business and Develop-ment Association handed over a cheque to Mudlarks from donations raised at Blast to the Past.

Colin Siebert, Treasurer for the Mudlarks, was there to receive the cheque, which was presented by Waiuku Scout, Dylan Brightwell, who was one of the volunteer team that helped collect the donations.

“Jo Brightwell of the Waiuku Scouts organised her group to be our collectors, which was a massive help,” says Sharlene Druyven, Town Manager.

Colin was incredibly appreciative, and said a thank you was needed to the wider Franklin community. “We are very thankful for the generous donation, which will help with the running and capital costs of what we do.”

Over $1000 collected for Mudlarks

Gardening

with Ruth

Summer SaladsIn your patch, sow dwarf beans, sugar snap peas, lettuce, radish, herbs, toma-toes and cucumber for summer salads. Add plenty of compost to your soil and a touch of blood and bone or good general vegetable fertiliser and work in well with a fork. Salad greens planted now will be ready to start harvesting in early

While reading a gardening magazine the other day, I spotted an article about radishes.

ll The first sentence ‘radishes are unfussy, easy to grow and can be sown all year round’ made me grimace a bit. If this is so, then why do mine bolt to seed and never form a bulb?

Maybe the position I

have chosen, full sun in the summer, is too hot. It can’t be lack of water as I water every morning in the dry months.

Perhaps it is the soil not being rich enough. What-ever is the cause, I just cannot grow the easiest vegetable on the planet!

This year I have saved seed and I am going to try that. Let’s hope it works as I love the peppery lit-tle mouthful of goodness that is a radish.

On the other hand I have tried an experiment in the hydroponic trays in the glasshouse. I planted cauliflower and they are doing very well. I will be harvesting one in the next couple of weeks. Al-so silverbeet, lettuce and celery are thriving in the glasshouse pipe system. The fennel is loving grow-ing in pots in there as well.

November by the moon:• 1-6 Prepare ground and maintain existing

crops, Do not plant.• 7-8 Sow root crops • 9-14 Cultivate and fertilise in preparation to

plant.• 15-23 Plant all crops that produce their edible

parts above the ground.• 24-28 Cultivate only Full moon November 26• 29-30 Sow root crops

December, and should still be OK up until Christmas. Remember to continue planting seedlings every three weeks to keep a steady supply all summer.Tomatoes need a little extra work but the reward is worth it. No matter what variety you choose, add a good tomato specific ma-nure into the soil. Then once a month drench the plants with a liquid seaweed fertiliser. Wa-ter regularly, a cousin who grew tomatoes commercially said “always water before 10am as the plants do not take up as much water during the heat of the day.”Stake your plants well with a pyramid style form or a solid straight stake. This is because the central stem is not strong enough to grow upright on its own. Break off any laterals as they appear. The smaller the lateral, the easier it is to break out, this will encourage the plant to produce more fruit.

Above: Celery and lettuce in the pipe hydroponic system Bee Aware

Now is the time to plant swan plants to feed the monarch butterfly caterpillars. They take up little space so four to five plants is ideal. Also plant flowers that they and the bees can feed on. Such as hebes, lavender, marigold, salvia and any flowers with a perfume work well. Bees love blue so try some blue flowering varieties.

Savoury cabbageThis is great with a roast or steak and my grand daughters love it!In a saucepan, place a knob of butter (or a splash of oil if you are dairy intolerant) a good pinch of salt and a generous grind of fresh black pepper. Thinly slice cabbage (quantity you need) and put in on top of butter, add a couple of tablespoons of water. Put over high heat and cook quickly stirring often. Do not overcook, leave a slight crunch on the cab-bage. Takes about 3 minutes once it is boiling.

Concern on the Waikato River

Talk Back

Community

Whilst down on the Waikato River in the Tuakau area last Monday, I was amazed at the number of river users who were around and on the river be-fore the start of summer, and it led me to be concerned about various things that I observed during my day afloat.

There were three waka ama crews practicing their paces in a build up to the National Championships in January 2016, they looked great and all the crews I saw were wearing lifejackets.

A large flotilla of about 5metre long large rowing craft accompanied by pow-er boats as escorts started to arrive from up river and I was later informed that they had rowed for three days and had camped at pre-arranged locations for two nights. I observed that their crews comprised of young boys and girls and again that they all were wearing life-jackets.

White baiters were seen both on the river and at the boat ramp sorting out their nets and associated gear, and fi-nally there were water skiers and jet boat operators.

One concern was the numerous logs floating down the river, some the size of large trees. There were parts that were submerged possibly due to their water logged condition and more were lodged against the up river side of the bridge

supports. I was very concerned about one jet skier on a black jet ski who was seen by many bystanders to be exceed-ing the five knot speed limit within 30 metres of the shore and, in particular, in the area close to other vessels.

Upon discussing this with a colleague afterwards I was informed that there is a five knot speed limit clearly displayed on large signs at the ramps and in two other locations clearly visible, and an-other sign shows the areas set aside for specific activities like jet skiing. Non compliance can result in a $200 fine, which can be imposed by the Waika-to Regional Council officers who have photographic evidence of these irre-sponsible people who put others at risk by their actions.

As this was the start of the boating season it has not got off to a good start and could result in more injury ac-cidents on this stretch of river (there have been two injury accidents in re-cent years, involving power craft in the area west of the Tuakau Bridge).

Hopefully the Waikato Regional Council will have staff in this area over the summer months to ensure that the bylaws are enforced, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.

Concerned river user(Name withheld)

Last week I talked about Lions Lake, and the disgust-ing state of the water therein. I finished with a com-ment the area should be renamed to accurately reflect its true heritage.

The stream that comes into Lions Lake from the south past the Cosmopolitan Club in the last bastion of the very historical Awaroa portage.

In the 1860s and 70s Maori and European trades trod and rowed that “Great South Road” of the time with their produce.

Huge quantities of veg-etables, flax and other supplies from the Waika-to were carted via the por-tage to a developing Auck-land – the new capital of New Zealand, as decreed by Governor William Hob-son after signing the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.

In the photograph is seen, the last portion of the arm of the harbour that came up under the the familiar profile of the former Holy Trinity Angli-can Church.

Waikato District Council has organised the following days for residents to drop off their inorganic refuse. The cost is $15 per trailer load. Payment on the day (no eftpos - cash only). Port Waikato - Maraetai Bay Reserve - Sat, 31 Oct,

8.30am to 12pm.Pokeno - Truck stop - Great South Rd - Sat 7 Nov, 8.30am to 12pm. Tuakau - Tuakau Saleyards - Sat 28 Nov, 8.30am to 12pm. Onewhero/Pukekawa - One-whero Rugby Club, Sat 5 Dec, 8.30am to 12pm.

Inorganic refuse days - Port Waikato, Pokeno, Tuakau and Onewhero

This waterway extended to approximately where the old supermarket building is sited, soon to become a vehicle museum.

During the time of the portage the ridge to the right of this photo, behind where the Bank of New Zealand and ANZ Bank are now, was know as Te Pahi and was lined with Maori living whare.

My recommendation is that this name “Te Pahi” should be applied to the lake and then perhaps Auck-land Council may show a greater degree of respect and keep it clean.

‘D’ - Decision MakingTry these suggestions to help you make decisions, they are your steps towards becoming a more decisive person.

* Stay calm - if you’re not in the right frame of mind, come back to it later* Write everything down - draw up an action plan, including a list of all your options* Brainstorm - write anything and everything you can think of around your decision, include possible outcomes* Be Clear - what exactly do you want? Be clear about the detail of your decision* Research - research

your decision. This may sound like a lot of work, but the more you know, the easier your decision becomes

The ability to be decisive not only makes life easier in general, but it also improves your overall level of confidence. Confidence in yourself soon spills over into others gaining more confidence in you and your ability to handle important situations. From a personal point of view, knowing that you are able to make the correct choice gives you a feeling of security and improved self - esteem.

Students, from two south Auckland schools, started the joint project after a coroner linked the death of a two-year-old girl to her damp state home.

ll Landcare Research, which helped analyse the samples from the homes of 22 students, did not expect some of the results.

The key results from the project - • 18 out of 22 homes were mouldy; • the mould was in a form that was likely to cause harm; • three different yeasts described as “emerging human pathogens” were found; • some of bacteria recovered was resistant to antibiotics; and Landcare Research says the homes with the yeasts and the antibiotic-resistant bacteria will need further inves-

tigation. Landcare Research plant pathologist Stanley Bellgard helped the students with their project, and gave them swabs and a tool to measure temperature and humidity.

“In the houses, the [mould] spores were actively in the air and these are the things that we inhale.

“Mostly it’s not an issue because we are healthy and our wellbeing is intact and these moulds generally don’t have an impact on us.

“But if we are stressed, physiologically stressed, malnourished or suffering dehydration, or have some predisposition to disease then these moulds... can cre-ate this downward spiral of health,” he said. There is a growing call for rental homes to be subjected to a War-rant of Fitness program.

M o u l d found in south Auckland homes by students who submitted test done on their own homes.

Patumahoe Community Church have opened their doors and created a Quiet Room, where members of the community can escape the demands that life tends to throw at you and just relax for an hour or two.

ll The Quiet Room is opened every Friday, from 10am to mid-day, and is located in the heat of the church.

Organiser, Mary McCleary, says that sometimes you need space to just be.

“The quiet of the church is something special, and we would like to offer that experience to people who need some space or a breather in their hectic life. They can talk to us if they like, however, we will just let them be.”

Guests will be offered tea or coffee, and soft music will be playing to help alleviate the relaxed feel of the church.

School project uncovers health risksFat FactsFirstborn women

are more likely to be overweight or obese than their second-born sisters, accord-ing to the largest study of its kind in women. The study led by New Zealand’s Liggins Institute, in collaboration with Swedish scientists, is published online today in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health. “We found that first-borns were nearly 30 per cent more likely to be overweight, and 40 per cent more likely to be obese than their second-born sisters,” says the senior in-vestigator, Professor Wayne Cutfield of the Liggins Institute at the University of Auck-land.

He says the study of 13,406 pairs of adult Swedish sisters backs up the findings of three earlier studies by his team – in first-born adult men and in children of both sexes. “Collectively, these studies show that both men and women who are born first are at greater risk of being overweight or obese,” Professor Cut-field says. “The steady decrease in family size over the last century has created a higher proportion of first-borns. That may be a contributing factor to the steady increase we are seeing in the adult body mass in-dex or BMI around the globe.” Professor Cutfield says the find-ings may add to our understanding of the obesity epidemic.

Putting your ‘Best Foot Forward’

Helen Wright BSc(Hons) Ost(UK);CMIOSH (UK);

PGDip(Hlth Erg)NZ/ACC/UK Registered Osteopath

Human Factors/Ergonomics Consultant

To put your “best foot forward’’ means to ‘try as hard as you can’. The problem from an osteopathic perspective is:1. You can try too hard and push

yourself beyond your safe limit.

2. You can literally always put your best foot forward and find that you overload one foot or side of the body and create an imbalance (one side strong, one side weak).

Keeping within your own capabili-ties and boundaries and making sure that you don’t favour one side more than the other are both important in maintaining good musculoskeletal and ‘whole body’ health. Our bod-ies, inside and out, depend upon a strong balanced framework. Next

time you stand, walk, run, sit have a think about whether your weight is evenly distributed through the left and right sides. Next time you ‘try as hard as you can’ have a think about how you feel during the activity and how long it takes you to recover. At Osteopathy Pukekohe we have 3 qualified osteopaths to help you achieve your goals and live life to the full in a manner which doesn’t overstrain the body. Let us help you put your ‘Best Foot Forward’ with our ‘whole body’, gentle approach that is suitable for all ages. For more information or an appoint-ment please call the Way of Life Health Shop where at least one os-teopath is on site 6 days a week or visit our website/Facebook page via www.osteopathypukekohe.com

The Homeopathic approach to Warts

Andy Ma, BSc(Chinese Meteria Medica), Cert (Chinese Massage). From 2002 I started to be involved in traditional Chinese medicine and Tui Na/Chinese Massage. Tui Na/Chinese Massage is an Oriental Bodywork Therapy that has been used in China for 4000 years.

A typical session of Tui Na/Chinese Massage may vary from thirty minutes to an hour. The session timings may vary depending on the patient’s needs and condition. The best part of the therapy is that it relaxes as well as energizes the person. Because Tui Na/Chinese Massage does not simply work on the muscles, bones, and joints. It works with the energy of the body at a deeper level. As the practitioner senses the client’s body with his/her hands, he/she is able to assess the distribution of energy and affect its flow.

The main benefit of Tui Na/Chinese Massage is that it focuses on the specific problem, whether it is an

acute or a chronic pain associated with the muscles, joints or a skeletal system. This technique is very beneficial in reducing the pain of neck, shoulders, hips, back, arms, thighs, legs and ankle disorders. It is a very effective therapy for arthritis, pain, sciatica and muscle spasms. Other benefits of this therapy include alleviation of the stress related disorders like anxiety, depression, headaches (incl. migraines), insomnia, constipation and other disorders related to digestive, respiratory and reproductive systems.

As with other styles of Oriental bodywork, Tui Na/Chinese Massage is designed to prevent problems, not just correct them. By keeping the body’s energy in balance, health is maintained. This is true not just for physical health, but for mental and

Warts are caused by viruses which invade the skin and cause the cells to multiply rapidly, forming raised lumps. Unable to kill the viruses, the body walls them off. In susceptible individuals, warts are contagious; touching warts can quite easily transfer viruses to new sites, and new warts. Common warts are small horns, flesh-coloured or whitish, and most commonly occur on hands, on soles of feet (veruccas). Two other types of wart, most common in children, are plane warts (which usually occur in groups, and look like tiny, brownish fleshy blisters) and molluscum contagiosum. Persistent warts are conventionally treated with wart paint, or they can be burnt or frozen off; or dug out.

Homeopathic medicine offers a number of specific remedies for warts, but if there is no improvement within a month or so, consult your homeopath as constitutional treatment is often necessary to tackle the underlying problem.

Specific remedies Soft, fleshy, cauliflower-like warts - chiefly on

back of head - which ooze and bleed easily Thuja; Many warts, chiefly on face, eyelids, and fingertips, also painful verrucas Causticum; Cauliflower-like warts which itch and sting, and sometimes ooze and bleed, or become large and jagged-edged, upper lip most affected Nitric ac. Any small, horny warts which itch, sting, weep, and bleed Calcarea; Horny warts associated with a callus Antimonium; Hard, smooth, fleshy warts, chiefly on back of hands Dulcamara; Warts on palms of hands, tendency to sweaty palms Natrum mur.; Large black warts with hairs in them Sepia; Hard warts which burn and throb Sulphur;

Self-help: Apply Thuja mother tincture twice daily and cover with a plaster, but never on facial warts; apply them to the wart only, not to the surrounding skin, and be careful not to get them in your eves.

Franklin Baptist Church in Pukekohe was a hive of activity last week as members of the church prepared for their annual Pumpkin Party.

From candy floss, horizontal bungy and chocolate fishing to minion mania & an inflat-able obstacle course, the volunteers presented a fabulous selection of activities for their more than 800 hundred young guests.

Christina van de Worp, co-ordinator of the event told The Post, “We aim to offer a safe set-ting for families to experience a carnival-type at-mosphere as an alternative to Halloween. Fancy dress is encouraged and our only request is there are no witches or wizards.”

Rapunzel, Elsa, Superman and numerous other colourful characters joined in the fun and at 8pm the 2015 Pumpkin Party came to an end and tired, but happy little people headed home to bed.

Sports Star of the weekWho: Ivana Rowland Age: 17 Years School: Tuakau College Profession: Netball Position: Goal Shoot/Goal Attack

The year 13 student has just been selected for the National U21 Development Netball Squad, which is a huge achieve-ment for the humble player who is playing well out of her age group. The teenager has been playing netball for eight years, with Ivana receiving her first break after being selected for the U19 Representative team through Pukekohe Netball. At the end of the year, Ivana will be taking part in a training camp, which will determine her position within the team who will be travelling to the Cook Islands to compete.Ivana has also been selected for the ANZ Transition Squad, in the hope to be selected for the Northern League team which will see them travel with the Mystics. While most of her free time is taken up with trainings, Ivana is currently studying for her final NCEA Level Three exams and says that she has good balance with her social life. The young netball star was also part of the winning team for Maramarua, who came out top of the table at Pukekohe Netball Centre this year. Ivana is certainly one to watch for the future.

There was gnashing of teeth and flexing of muscles last week at Bombay School as 380 students donned on black clothing, painted black stripes on their faces and rolled out their supporters’ gear. Bombay went ALL BLACK to support the National Team as they wanted the boy in black to know that everyone supported them leading up to their win of the Rugby World Cup.

There were 23 riders representing Sunset Coast BMX Club as they compet-ed in the North Island Ti-tles in Taupo over Labour weekend and came away with some excellent results.

After heavy rain during practice early on Satur-day morning, the first day of racing gradually cleared and the track dried out for the heats of day one. Rid-ers had four heats each and carried points over to Sun-day. After two more heats Sunday morning, finals placings were calculated.

The larger classes started with quarter finals, where the top four progressed to the semi final, and the top two from each semi to the main final.

There were some great performances on a chal-lenging track, such as DJ Douglas, making it as far as the semi finals in the six year old boys’ class, at his first North Island Titles.

Su n s e t C o a s t B M X achieved two podium fin-ishes, and six other final-ists, with Paiton Taylor be-coming back to back North Island Champion in seven year old girls, adding to the National Number one title she won in Christchurch at Easter this year.

Bevan Brown almost bagged the double too, but had to settle for second in the 35-39 Cruiser class fi-nal, after coming from be-hind to take the lead, he slipped up just short of the finish line, finishing only centimetres behind New Zealand’s number one, Ste-ve Schimanski of Hawera.

Sunset Coast BMX Club is looking forward to host-ing the Auckland Champi-onships over Auckland An-niversary weekend 2016, followed by the BMX NZ National Championships at Easter 2016, where over 1000 entries are to be ex-pected.

Koi Carp Classic this weekendt h i s weekend is the 26th Annual World Koi Carp Classic, which will be held at Lake Puketirini near Huntly.

Organised by the New Zealand Bowhunters Society, the annual event is a bowfishing only tournament, and is only opened to the members of the society.

ll Beginning at daylight on Saturday and Sunday, competitors can hunt carp anywhere in the Waikato River and lake systems, with weigh-in times at the end of each day.

Koi carp are a pest fish that were ille-gally introduced into the Waikato area in the early eighties. They have spread to every stream, river and lake with ac-

Awhitu Golf Open DayAwhitu Golf Club had their open day last Sunday, which proved to be a very good

day for golf as shown by the scores. Julia Kuggeleijn made the best nett score of 60. Brett Wilson had the best gross of 76. Alan Finlayson was the best of the division 2 players with 67 nett. Julie Duncan was the next best 64 nett. Barry Cochrane and Tony Thorne also scored 40 points. Next month’s open day will be on Sunday, No-vember 29. All golfers are welcome.

Round Four for Counties Manukau Softball

Counties Manukau Softball kick started all grades last Sat-urday at Prince Edward Park, Papakura, with over 500 partic-ipants enjoying their first day of softball for the summer season.

The Premier games started at 12 noon with a double header in the women’s with Ardmore Marist and Takanini winning one game each against each other with representative up-coming pitcher, Jackie Clay, playing a big role for Takanini. The win gives Ardmore Marist their first of the season. A home run to Redhill Rockettez cap-tain, Rahera Dickson, guaran-teed them a convincing win over last season’s runners up, Weymouth Bombaz.

The win gives them a slight advantage over the rest as it was for double points but the com-petition remains even with eve-ry team now with a win under their belt.

In the men’s section, Wey-mouth Bombaz continue to lead with two wins although they had to dig deep in both games, winning in tie break-er against Southern Pioneers and coming from behind to win against Mana Majors who were leading 5-0 in the fourth innings. Ardy Tapiki had a good game for Mana Majors and with new recruit, Jason Matthews, back from baseball duties, they are finding some good form.

Adam Chwesik pitched well for Bombaz to hold Mana Ma-jors out for the 9-6 win. Redhill Rocketz also had two wins to add to their tally, with Saan Tuoro earning a player of the day performance with domi-nance on the mound and in the batter’s box. Jamie Tanielu also collected five hits for the Rock-etz.

Don’t miss out the opportu-nity to watching this Saturday’s games at the Colin Laurie Park in Pukekohe as the Pukekohe Rangers and Redhill Rocketz compete against each other. Games begin from 12 noon.

Premier Men Results: Re-dhill Rocketz (6) – Manurewa Mets (0); Weymouth Bombaz (7) – Southern Pioneers (6); Weymouth Bombaz (9) - Mana Majors (6); Redhill Rocketz (7) – Southern Pioneers (0). Pre-mier Women Results: Takanini (10) - Ardmore Marist (9); Re-dhill Rockettez (9) – Weymouth Bombaz (3); Ardmore Marist (1) – Takanini (5).

cess to the Waikato River, from the Lake Karapiro dam to Port Waikato. The New Zealand Bowhunters Society have held an annual carp hunt since 1990 and in that time have removed 28,749 koi carp – that is a total of 69 tonnes from the wa-terways.

The winning team at last year’s event was Ruben Hastings and Ben Passau from Waiuku, with Ruben taking out the prize for the most carp by shooting a to-tal of 148 fish over the weekend.

The public are invited to attend the weigh-in, where there will be a tractor-driven mincer that can turn the koi carp into burley, which is available for free. While they are not allowed to sell the koi or the burley, the NZBS invite those who attend to make a donation to the Huntly Rotary Club as they organise the event.

Weigh in times are Saturday 5pm to 7pm and Sunday 2pm to 4pm.

Pictured from left, Graeme Warrender, New Zealand Bowhunters Society Presi-dent, last year’s winners Ruben Hastings, Ben Passau and Jack de Thierry, Depart-ment of Conservation.

The recent announcement that Auck-land Transport is investigating if the new electric trains can be converted to run on batteries for services to Pukekohe, has to be read with bemusement.

The present Spanish built electric trains which are run with conventional well established technology have had a number of issues which are still being ironed out.

Now new unproven technology is be-ing proposed. The issues and likely relia-bility issues for long suffering Pukekohe rail commuters bear not thinking about.

Even if this folly of battery powered trains does get the go ahead, there will still need to be considerable expendi-ture on upgrading the signalling sys-tem between Papakura and Pukekohe which the electric trains require to op-erate with.

This same computer controlled sys-tem is also one of the main causes of problems for the new electric trains, resulting in them operating slower in

some instances than the older diesels that they have replaced.

The seats in the new electric trains are hard and uncomfortable and cramped compared to the seats in the older die-sel trains. The thought of an even longer painful journey makes using a car more attractive, even with sitting in traffic.

I have even been told by some of the train crew that many of the drivers don’t like the new electric trains and find them similarly uncomfortable to drive.

Unless full electrification is supplied and the problems with the electric trains are sorted, money would be bet-ter spent on improving the ADL diesel units, which have given a more reliable service since their recent introduction.

Having a fleet of refurbished diesel trains, there is also more likelihood of rail services being extended to Tuakau and Pokeno and possibly Waiuku which would be of more benefit to many more people.
